However,syntactic changes are not necessary for the occurrence of lexicalization. The differences between syntactically relevant lexicalization and syntactically irrelevant lexicalization are also discussed.

Abstract:Lexicalization is a very common kind of language change that is worth exploring. In this paper, we summarize the contributions of studies on lexicalization. First of all, studies on lexicalization can reveal regularities of language change. Secondly it can provide explanations to some synchronic issues. Thirdly, it can benefit the compilation of historical dictionaries. We explain some critical issues in studies on lexicalization, including the following questions: (1)Is the change of becoming a functional word lexicalization or grammaticalization? (2) Are coordinating disyllabic words the result of lexicalization or word formation? (3) What are the differences between lexicalization due to citation and lexicalization occurred naturally in language change? (4) What are the differences between lexicalization and word formation? There are a lot of achievements in previous studies on lexicalization, but there are also some shortcomings. Most importantly, some studies are merely case study without any discussion in theory. There are also some problems in the details of the studies. Currently, there are few studies combining lexicalization with other issues in language, which are highly needed. We put forward some new research projects in the field of lexicalization. For example, semantic change during the process of lexicalization and the typological differences in diachronic lexicalization.

Abstract:The study of Chinese syntax began with the advent of Chinese grammar. Syntactic classifications have hitherto been carried out in the light of different grammatical theories and systems, giving birth to diverse and even mutually exclusive sentence patterns. It is suggested in this essay that, in the study of Chinese syntax, priority be given to the establishment of a whole system of scientifically defined, general, concise, and practical sentence patterns in consistency with Chinese grammatical rules.

Abstract:The syntactic structure of sentences in which a new word appears may provide listeners with cues to that new word’s form class. In English, for example, a noun tends to follow a determiner ( a/ an/ the), while a verb precedes the morphological inflection [ing]. The presence of these markers may assist children in identifying a word’s form class and thus glean some information about its meaning. This study examined whether Mandarin, a language that has a relatively impoverished morphosyntactic system, offers reliable morphosyntactic cues to the noun–verb distinction in child-directed speech (CDS). Using the CHILDES Beijing corpora, Study 1 found that Mandarin CDS has reliable morphosyntactic markers to the noun–verb distinction. Study 2 examined the relationship between mothers’ use of a set of early-acquired nouns and verbs in the Beijing corpora and the age of acquisition (AoA) of these words. Results showed that the occurrence of the form class markers is a reliable predictor of the AoA for the early-acquired nouns and verbs.

Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:Language is a complex adaptive system, but how does it change? For investigating this process, four diachronic Chinese word co-occurrence networks have been built based on texts that were written during the last 2,000 years. By comparing the network indicators that are associated with the hierarchical features in language networks, we learn that the hierarchy of Chinese lexical networks has indeed evolved over time at three different levels. The connections of words at the micro level are continually weakening; the number of words in the meso-level communities has increased significantly; and the network is expanding at the macro level. This means that more and more words tend to be connected to medium-central words and form different communities. Meanwhile, fewer high-central words link these communities into a highly efficient small-world network. Understanding this process may be crucial for understanding the increasing structural complexity of the language system.

Abstract:This paper analyzes two discourse markers in Chinese: Shuí zhīdào(谁知道) and Bié shuō(别说). These two discourse markers are the result of lexicalization. During the process of acquiring the function of discourse marker, Shuí zhīdào and Bié shuō experienced similar syntactic and semantic changes. Syntactically, they all started as free phrase and became single word-like unit. Semantically, they all underwent conventionalization and semanticization of utterance meaning. Many Chinese discourse markers originated from verbal constructions, appearing either in the front position or in the final position of a clause. They do not tend to be cliticized as some other functional categories, and they can have variants in form. The analysis of discourse markers can throw some light on the relationship between lexicalization and grammaticalization: The two processes can lead to the same kind of result, i.e. both of them can give birth to functional categories, and the two processes can apply to the same form successively.

Abstract:The synergetic lexical model provides a unique framework for exploration of the interrelationships between the lexical properties of languages. Previous studies concerning several properties of this lexical model have yielded many successful fittings results, but very few studies have investigated synonymy, a major property of this model. The present study uses 825 Chinese and 848 English tokens retrieved from Chinese and English corpora, dictionaries, and thesaurus to conduct a contrastive study on the interrelations between four major properties of this lexical model: word length, word frequency, polysemy, and synonymy. The successful fittings of both languages demonstrate the cross-linguistic validity of the synergetic lexical model, though English belongs to the Germanic language family, while Chinese, a highly analytical language, is of the Sino-Tibetan language family. Moreover, our analysis of the parameters of the fitting results shows that, compared to English, Chinese possesses a greater resistance to shortening word length and a quicker response to semantic change.
A Study on the Evolution of the Verbal Syntactic Valence Based on Corpus

Abstract:The paper aims at studying the evolution process of the syntactic valence of verbs. In the study, three corpuses, i.e. the corpus of ancient classical Chinese,the corpus of ancient vernacular and the corpus of modern vernacular, are constructed. We selected ten main verbs as the objects of the research, and suggested some methods of sample sentence selecting and analyzing. The complements and modifications of the verbs are analyzed in this paper. It reveals that Chinese grammer changes gradually. The ancient classical Chinese and the ancient vernacular are more similar in sentence structures. After the transformation from the ancient vernacular to the modern vernacular, the complexity of Chinese sentences is increased sharply, indicating that Chinese sentence structures have changed greatly after the transformation from ancient vernacular to modern vernacular.
On the Property of Resultative Construction: From the Perspective of Lexicalization

Abstract:There exists a long time controversy with regard to the nature of resultative construction in Chinese. Some scholars think that this kind of construction is syntactical and some others think that it is lexical. This paper argues that the resultative construction was diachronically the result of lexicalization and finally became a morphological pattern synchronically. Thus, it is lexical in nature. The origin of resultative construction did not create a new position between verb and its object. It only changed the way of expressing causativity, that is, from expressing causativity within one syllable through inflection to expressing it by compounding. Evidences support identifying resultative construction as lexical, and the reasons mentioned in the literature that support identifying the resultative construction as syntactical can be explained another way.
Predicting Syntactic Choice in Mandarin Chinese: a Corpus-Based Analysis of Ba Sentences and SVO Sentences

Abstract:Abstract This paper investigates the effects of 10 factors on the choice between alternative ba sentences and SVO sentences in Mandarin Chinese. These factors are givenness, definiteness, animacy and pronominality of NP2s, NP2 length, VP length, verb sense, syntactic parallelism, dependency distance, and surprisal. Using corpus data and mixed-effects logistic regression modeling, we find that on the one hand, givenness, syntactic parallelism, and the log-transformed ratio of NP2 length and VP length are significant predictors of the choice between ba sentences and SVO sentences. A new NP2, a large length ratio and a parallel construction predict an SVO sentence rather than a ba sentence. On the other hand, dependency distance and surprisal estimated by the trigram model are effective in predicting the choice between naturally occurring ba/SVO sentences and their alternatives. Naturally occurring sentences are more likely to have shorter dependency distances and smaller surprisal values than the converted sentences. The effects of these five factors on syntactic choice are congruent with results of previous studies, which suggests that some determinants of syntactic choice are shared among languages.

Abstract:This study quantitatively investigated word frequencies in parallel Chinese texts at three different periods, namely, Classical Chinese (1855), Beijing Mandarin (1908) and Modern Mandarin (2010), attempting to shed some light on the evolution of the Chinese language over the last 150 years. With the evolution of Chinese: both the types and tokens increased diachronically, and sharp changes can be found in the high-frequency function words, vocabulary richness, and the distribution of word classes. The syntactic structure has also become increasingly complex. In addition, although the length of words (measured in character) has increased diachronically, disyllabic words have not always been preponderant in Chinese after the opium war of 1840–1842. The results show that the complication is a crucial trend in the evolution process of Chinese.

Abstract:With social and technological developments, the contents and means of human communication have undergone tremendous changes, which, in turn, lead to the evolution of word forms and their meanings in human language. In literature, much scholarship has been devoted to the semantic dynamics of words from the perspective of usage frequency, yet this frequency-based method cannot explain clearly the lexical-semantic change due to its failure to cover word senses. In this paper, a large-scale Chinese newspaper text corpus is employed and the distributed representations of some words and their senses are elicited in order to observe the diachronic evolvement of word semantics. The semantic change of the words in the timeline suggests that the distributional method proposed in this paper is effective for the exploration of lexical semantic dynamics. The implication of this study is that the corpus-based distributional method can become a useful tool for studies in other fi elds, such as language evolution, sociolinguistics and language planning.
The Structural Complexity of Chinese Words and Its Relationship with Word Frequency.

Abstract:The morphological synergetic model has yet to be fully tested in typical analytic languages. The quantification of Chinese morphology and its relationship with word frequency can help construct and test the morphological synergetic model in Chinese. Based on the Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin Chinese, this study proposes a quantitative method for the structural complexity of Chinese words by Kolmogorov complexity, further examining the interrelation between the structural complexity of words (SCW) and word frequency. Results show that the SCW of words formed by combining morphemes in multiple assembling ways is generally higher than that in a single assembling way among the seven structural types of Chinese words, but derivational affixes impact SCW significantly. The higher SCW, the lower the word frequency. Given the combined effects of morpheme properties, y=Ax(-b)e(-cx) is more suitable to describe the inverse relationship than y=Ax(-b). Additionally, the higher the word frequency, the lower SCW. The delayed negative feedback causes small-scale fluctuations, but y=Ax(-b)e(-cx) can effectively describe the overall interactions between the two. From the internal mechanism, word frequency changes first, thus causing changes in word structure; In turn, for communication effectiveness, the structure of words becomes more complex to carry more meaning, thus influencing word frequency.
Lexicalization typology of motion events in Chinese: A critical survey

Abstract:This paper presents a review of recent studies of lexicalization typology of motion events (Talmy 1985, 1991, 2000) in Chinese. The following trends have emerged: (1) discriminating between semantic head and syntactic head while clarifying the typology of Chinese; (2) considering lexicalization typology from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives; (3) taking into consideration from both language structure and language use/discourse structure, since lexicalization typology has both syntactic and pragmatic properties. It is found that languages grouped within the same pattern may show various syntactic behaviors.

Abstract:Abstract The Chinese language has encouraged the paradigm shift in linguistics away from Chomsky-style sentence-internal rules toward usage-based discourse. Analysts have debated two possibilities: is Chinese an allegedly ‘inferior’ and ambiguous language because it rests on the ‘three zeros’: zero subjects, zero anaphora, and zero tense? Or does Chinese use ‘hidden complexity’ ( Bisang 2009 ) to make reference clear by discourse marking? Chinese pressure points on linguistic theory center on these ‘three zeros’. Zero subjects have influenced a broader research category of topic-centered languages. Zero anaphora influenced reference tracking beyond the sentence. Zero tense expanded understanding of time and aspect. The process of the shift comes from international networks of multilingual scholars of Chinese. They have collaborated to form a critical mass of explicitly comparative, empirical research. Chinese interdisciplinary research has been especially influential in typology, child language, cross-cultural communications, translation and artificial intelligence. Fifty years ago, mainstream conferences, textbooks, books, and journals almost never featured Chinese. Now they routinely do.
Can Familiarity Lessen the Effect of Locality? A Case Study of Mandarin Chinese Subjects and the Following Adverbials

Abstract:This paper explores the relation between familiarity of Chinese subjects and the syntactic distance. We propose two hypotheses: (1) contextually given Mandarin Chinese subjects are more likely to be used with long intervening adverbials than contextually new subjects; and (2) subjects with higher word frequency are more likely to be followed by long adverbials than those with lower word frequency. The data from two Mandarin Chinese treebanks provide supportive evidence for the first hypothesis, but not the second. Cognitively, this is probably due to the possibility that contextual givenness, which reflects familiarity, may lessen the effect of locality by increasing the activation level (the accessibility) of the subject and rendering these subjects less susceptible to the memory decay caused by the adverbials intervening between them and the predicate verbs. Subjects are usually the starting point of a sentence, which has a default given-new information structure. Therefore, when organizing a sentence, we are dominantly concerned with the information status (contextual givenness) relative to previous context when choosing the subjects, which may partly accounts for the observed irrelevance between word frequency and the use of adverbials. A sentence is structured on the basis of the information status of the subjects, not their word frequency.

Abstract:Lexicalization is connected with synthetic expressions and analytic expressions.Through the contrastive study of 5 means of wordformation and lexicalization,the paper finds that synthetic expressions are more often used in English than in Chinese.The discovery helps explain the overuse of the "make + object + complement","verb + adverb" or other analytic expressions in Chinese students' compositions.It suggests that in College English teaching more attention be drawn to synthetic expressions to improve their writing.
Markedness reversal:The iconicity of prosody and syntax in Chinese

Abstract:Markedness reversal is defined in this paper as a reversal of a particular feature between a category and a subcategory under that category.In Mandarin Chinese the mono-vs.di-syllable distinction and the related [2+1] vs.[1+2] distinction in syllable alignment determines to a large degree the differentiation of two major syntactic relations,attributive-noun and verb-object.This kind of prosodic distinction is actually a morpho-syntactic means characteristic of the Chinese language which lacks inflectional morphology of the Indo-European languages.The fact is explained by markedness reversal,motivated by the iconicity of tightness and quantity between prosodic structures and syntactic relations,because in Chinese verbs constitute a subcategory in the noun category and adjectives a subcategory in the verb category.The related markedness reversal also sheds light on the characteristics of Chinese in its word class system.Typologically,in addition to the fact that Chinese adjectives behave more like verbs,more importantly,the primary distinction of word classes in Chinese is between depictives and non-depictives,the former includ～ing reduplicative forms of nouns,verbs and adjectives.
A Syntactic Analysis of Chinese Locative Preposition Phrases from a Cross-Linguistic Perspective

Abstract:Within the framework of labeling theory of generative grammar and Distributed Morphology, this article provides a syntactic analysis of Chinese locative preposition phrases, and argues that both monosyllabic and disyllabic locative words are lexical words which share the same root. Monosyllabic and disyllabic locative preposition phrases share the same syntactic structure. In the derivation, the root of the locative word merges with the category-assigning morpheme n providing the label n, and n merges with the DP indicating the ground providing the label nP, and then the nP merges with the preposition p providing the label pP. Monosyllabic locative forms are divided into locative suffixes and locative nouns. Monosyllabic locative nouns cannot occur independently in some environments due to a phonological rule for SOME (not all) Modern Chinese words, such as wa ‘sock’, shi ‘stone’, bei ‘quilt’, etc. In the same vein, double preposition adjacency phrases in English, e.g., from above the dam are analyzed. This article also presents syntactic structures of locative preposition phrases in English and Japanese. All the structures proposed in this article do not contain ad hoc conditions and unnecessary movements and have strong explanatory power.
