Inborn Nature and Moral Transformation——Xunzi on"Transforming the Inborn Nature and Developing the Acquired Nature"(Hua Xing Qi Wei)

Abstract:Xunzi insists that human nature is evil.According to Xunzi,the meanings of emo-tion(Qing,情),nature(Xing,性)and desire(Yu,欲)are generally similar.They all manifest as a love of profit and the desire to obtain it.Therefore,a person cannot love morality intrinsical-ly if following his inborn nature.However,the inborn nature(or desire)can be shaped and transformed according to Xunzi.Through this transformation of inborn nature,a person can cre-ate the motivation to pursue morality and ritual principles."T ransforming the inborn nature and developing the acquired nature"(Hua xing qi wei,化性起伪)is a way to realize this moral trans-formation."Transforming the inborn nature"(Hua xing,化性)could modify manifestation pat-terns of inborn nature and desires of a person."Developing the acquired nature"(Qi wei,起伪), which contains changes of one's cognition,deliberation,evaluation,believes and so on,is a fur-ther step after"Transforming the inborn nature"(Hua xing,化性).Because of the influence of this process,one would question himself on his desires and the objects of desires,such as"why to pursue","how to pursue","whether to pursue".And therefore,it then makes creation of new motivation and transformation to moral life possible.
