Abstract:Nanometre-sized inorganic dots, wires and belts have a wide range of electrical and optical properties, and variable mechanical stability and phase-transition mechanisms that show a sensitive dependency on size, shape and structure. The optical properties of the semiconductor ZnS in wurtzite structures are considerably enhanced, but the lack of structural stability limits technological applications. Here, we demonstrate that morphology-tuned wurtzite ZnS nanobelts show a particular low-energy surface structure dominated by the surface facets. Experiments and calculations show that the morphology of ZnS nanobelts leads to a very high mechanical stability to ∼6.8 GPa, and also results in an explosive mechanism for the wurtzite-to-sphalerite phase transformation together with in situ fracture of the nanobelts. ZnS wurtzite nanobelts provide a model that is useful not only for understanding the morphology-tuned stability and transformation mechanism, but also for improving synthesis of metastable nanobelts with quantum effects for electronic and optical devices.

Abstract:Large scale ZnS nanobelts have been successfully synthesized on Zn foil with/without gold coating by a thermal treatments method under H2S/N2 mixed atmosphere for the first time. Morphological, crystallized and optical properties on the ZnS nanobelts are systematically investigated. The results indicate that the presence of Au film plays a key role in the formation of nanobelts. The nanobelts have width in the range of 400nm–5μm and length of nearly a few hundred micrometers, which are much larger than that of reported in the literature. Besides, all of the nanobelts are crystallized in a single crystal with a wurtzite structure and grow along the (100) direction. The growth mechanisms of ZnS nanobelts in width and length are explored based on our experiments.

Abstract:Large-scale ZnO nanobelts in aligned fashion have been prepared via a simply conducted low temperature evaporation route using the oxidization of metallic zinc plates at 450±10 °C under ambient pressure. The produced nanobelt array has been structurally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microscope images show that the nanobelts are about 120-micron long, ranging on average from 80 to 160 micron, with about 30 nm in thickness. In addition to XRD, high-resolution TEM images and electron-diffraction patterns show that the nanobelts are single crystalline with wurtzite structure and mostly grow along the [0001] direction. The photoluminescence spectra of the single nanobelts show that the nanobelts have a dominant near-band-edge emission at about 388 nm with a very weak defect emission band centered at about 514 nm.

Abstract:The facile synthesis of one-dimensional II–VI semiconductor hollow nanostructures with sharp tips is of particular interest for their applications in novel nanodevices. In this study, by employing ZnO nanoneedles with lower symmetry structures as self-sacrificed templates, ZnS hollow nanoneedles with homogeneous thickness have been synthesized by a low temperature hydrothermal route through in situ chemical conversion manner and the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. The hollow needlelike structures obtained in the present study can be used as starting materials to create fantastic nanoarchitectures and may have important applications in optoelectronic nanodevices.

Abstract:High-quality morphology-tunable CdxZn1-xS nanostructures were synthesized through a one-step thermal evaporation process. They are in the forms of nanoswords, super-long nanowires, cubic nanopillars, heterogeneous nanobelts, branched nanorods, and nanocombs. The morphology and composition of the as-prepared CdxZn1-xS nanomaterials were regulated by controlling (i) distance between source materials, (ii) deposition temperature, and (iii) flow of protecting gas. The hexagonal wurtzite phase of the CdxZn1-xS nanostructures was verified by XRD, and the single crystallinity was confirmed by SAED analysis. In the photoluminescence (PL) study, the emission bands ranged from 448 to 474 nm, which indicates the formation of ZnxCd1-xS nanocrystals rather than CdS, ZnS, or core-shell structured nanocrystals. The result of the cathodoluminescence (CL) investigation reveals that the nanoswords are thick at the middle and thin at the two edges, just as the name "nanoswords" indicates. It is worth pointing out that the low-cost, environment-friendly approach adopted in the present study can be applied to synthesize nanostructures of other compounds such as ternary MgxZn1-xS, CuxCd1-xS and quaternary CuCdMgS semiconductors.

Abstract:This paper reports the preparation in large quantity of bifilar helix-like nanobelts of single crystalline Zn2SnO4, a face-centered cubic spinet and transparent semiconductor that possesses wide applications in photovoltaic devices and sensors for humidity and combustible gases, by using a unique approach that combines chemical vapor deposition, aluminothermal reaction, vapor-liquid-solid growth, mergence of polar plane, and kinetic control by steady-state turbulent flow. The bifilar helix-like nanobelt was formed by the twisting and merging of two independent Zn2SnO4 nanobelts, as analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. It had a periodicity along the axial direction and hence, is actually a super-lattice material. The photoluminescence measurements showed a strong light emission at 326.1 nm from the as-prepared sample with a line width of about 1.5 nm. The combined approach used in this study, in particular its aluminothermal reaction and steady-state turbulent gas flow perturbation steps, may be helpful in preparing other similar materials.

Abstract:One-dimensional metal nanowires (NWs) with high aspect ratios are highly desirable for a wide range of critical applications due to their unique electrical and mechanical characteristics. Unfortunately, such nanomaterials are challenging and expensive to synthesize, and their production is difficult to scale up. Here, we report a rather straightforward strategy to directly convert binary zinc (Zn) alloys into Zn NWs under ambient temperature and pressure conditions without using any catalyst, template, or costly/toxic chemical. The formation of NWs follows the mechanism based on minimization of strain energy at the boundary of a chemical reaction front. We show that micrometer-sized Zn–Li grains gradually evolve and transform into hybrid Zn and zinc-alkoxide NWs during a dealloying reaction. Such NW mixtures can be eventually converted into pure Zn metal NWs after thermal reduction in a H<sub>2</sub>–Ar atmosphere. We investigate the effect of Zn–Li alloy composition, dealloying, and annealing temperature on the diameter and length of the formed Zn NWs. Abstract:A simple mild solution method is developed to synthesize a novel nanoribbon multicomponent precursor. A new 1-D nanostructure, porous structured nanoribbons which are self-assembled by textured ZnO nanoparticles, was found upon removal of ligand molecules from the ribbonlike precursor. The structure combines 1-dimensional geometry with nanoparticle morphology and displays porous structure because there are gaps/pores between the particles. The orientation textured structure of the ZnO nanoparticles can be formed by controlling the annealing time. The ZnO nanoparticle nanoribbons exhibit a long geometrical shape, uniformity. a high aspect ratio, and different optical activities with different nanostuctures. These findings demonstrate a convenient, simple technique for production of the novel one-dimensional semiconductor nanostructure suitable for subsequent processing into nanostructures, materials, and devices.

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanostructured Zn1-xMnxS, a diluted magnetic semiconductor, was achieved via a simple vapour phase deposition on silicon substrates. Morphology, structure, and composition of the nanostructured Zn1-xMnxS were studied by using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The nanostructured Zn1-xMnxS is composed of nanowires and nanobelts, which are quite flexible and free of defects. Both of them have smooth and straight surfaces with lengths over 10 mu m. They possess cubic structure with a principal axis [111] along their axes. The nanostructured Zn1-xMnxS exhibits paramagnetic behaviour. Photoluminescence study shows a blue band and a yellow band, which are due to the surface states and the transitions of Mn2+ (T-4(1)(G)(-6)A(1)( S)), respectively. The growth of the nanostructured Zn1-xMnxS could be explained by a self-catalyst growth mechanism.

Abstract:Novel ZnO nanoladders have been synthesized by a simple chemical vapor deposition. Transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that one ZnO nanoladder consists of two nanobelts whose growth directions are different to each other. The grain boundary in the middle of the junctions between the two nanobelts is clearly observed. A two-step growth model is speculated to interpret the growth of ZnO nanoladder based on the detailed structure analyses. The super-saturation of the Zn vapor and the Coulomb repulsion between the two nanobelts are the dominating factors for the growth of ZnO nanoladders.

This method can be easily controlled and is expected to extend to fabricate other metal oxide or chalcogenide ID nanomaterials.

Abstract:Novel hierarchical ZnO nanostructures, porous ZnO nanobelts, and nanoparticle chains are prepared from a precursor of synthetic bilayered basic zinc acetate (BLBZA) nanobelts. BLBZA nanobelts are obtained by a simple synthetic route under mild conditions. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis are used to characterize the BLBZA nanobelts and ZnO nanostructures. The obtained BLBZA precursor consists of a lamellar structure with two interlayer distances of 1.33 and 2.03 nm, exhibits a beltlike morphology, and has widths of 200 to 600 nm, thicknesses of 10 to 50 nm, and lengths of up to 50 mu m. Refluxing an aqueous dispersion of BLBZA nanobelts at 120 degrees C for 12 h leads to the formation of well-defined hierarchical ZnO nanostructures. The time-dependent shape-evolution process suggests that spindlelike ZnO particles form first, and then the ringlike nanosheets grow heterogeneously on the backbone of these spindles. In addition, calcination in air can remove ligand molecules and intercalated water molecules from BLBZA nanobelts, resulting in the formation of porous ZnO nanobelts and nanoparticle chains. The BLBZA nanobelts serve as templates during the transformation to form ZnO beltlike nanoparticle chains without morphological deformation. Photoluminescence results show that both the as-synthesized hierarchical ZnO nanostructures and porous ZnO nanobelts show a narrow and sharp UV emission at 390 nm and a broad blue-green emission at above 466 nm when excited by UV light.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we report the first successful epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires on ZnS nanobelts via the metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. The compositional and structural analyses show that the product consists of wurtzite-structured ZnS/ZnO nanobelt/nanowire heterostructures, which have an epitaxial relationship with identical orientation along the (100) and (002) planes, respectively. Single crystallinity, the same orientation between the ZnS and ZnO, and a short growth time make the new epitaxial growth method with the pre-prepared nanostructures as substrates appropriate for the construction and investigation of one-dimensional heterostructures.

Abstract:Single-crystalline wurtzite ZnS nanobelts are synthesized by the vapor phase transport (VPT) process. When oxidized, a single-crystalline ZnS nanobelt turns into a ZnO nanotwin belt containing two twinning parts with a sharp and clear edge, which is a (0001) twinning plane parallel to and running through the length direction. The two twinning parts in a ZnO nanotwin belt have the same crystalline direction, [0001], along their width, and the [011̄0] and [112̄0] crystalline directions along the length direction. On some ZnO nanobelts, nanovoids appear along the twinning planes and when those nanovoids connect with each other, one original ZnS nanobelt can divide into two single-crystalline ZnO nanobelts with quite clear edges.

Abstract:Uniform, flexible, wurtzite-type ZnS nanobelts decorated with a ZnS–diethylenetriamine (DETA) hybrid intermediate can be prepared by a mild solvothermal reaction in a solvent mixture consisting of DETA and water (see figure). The volume ratio of DETA to water has a significant influence on the structure, composition, shape, and phase evolution of the product. This approach may provide a general route to prepare other semiconductor nanoarchitectures with tunable optical properties. Abstract:Heterostructures of side-to-side biaxial ZnS/Zn2SnO4 (ZTO) nanowires have been fabricated via a simple one-step thermal evaporation process. Structural characterization by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction indicates that both the face-centered cubic spinel ZTO subsection and the wurtzite ZnS subsection of the heterostructure are well crystallized with a distinct interface along the heterostructure axial direction. Based on detailed analysis of the growth process of biaxial ZnS/ZTO nanowire heterostructures, there are two dominating stages: a vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) controlled growth of ZTO sub-nanowire and a self-assembly growth of ZnS sub-nanowire onto the preformed ZTO base nanowire. A growth model of the heterostructures is proposed. The presented method would be flexible and feasible for the synthesis of other nano-heterostructures with non-oxide/oxide interface to meet the growing demands of nanoscale science and technology.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) Zn-doped In2O3−SnO2 superlattice nanostructures have been fabricated on single-crystal silicon substrates by the layer-by-layer growth mode via the thermal chemical vapor transport and condensation with Au catalysts. The morphology, structure, and composition of the as-synthesized 1D superlattice were analyzed in detail. To exploit the potential applications of the fabricated nanostructures, the field emission properties of samples were characterized. The growth mechanism of the 1D Zn-doped In2O3−SnO2 superlattice nanostructures was discussed on the basis of the vapor−liquid−solid process.
