Abstract:As a social carrier, a city is a place of human activities, and human activities also shape and influence the city through its dynamic demand. The in-depth understanding of urban functions is important for urban planning, and the full utilization of the spatial–temporal variation of human activities can be more effective in the identification of land functions. However, the complete extraction of time series features is one of the difficulties. To solve the above problems, the paper explores the identification of land use types based on human activity feature extraction, by taking Beijing as an example. Firstly, this paper constructs a time series that characterizing the change of passenger flow in the metro station area with AFC data, and realizes the feature extraction and type clustering of the time series. Secondly, this paper forms an index system for land use type identification by introducing POI-based indicators, which achieves a comprehensive representation of population activity data. Finally, this paper constructs a land use type identification model based on multi-source human activity data by using GBDT classifier. The results show that the model has high recognition accuracy. It is found that the fusion application of AFC and POI improves the land use recognition accuracy in the case of "Consistent change in time series but different types of demand", and the different POI triggers the seemingly overall stable but random activity demand within the city. The research results promote the innovative application of open-source big data in the field of urban planning.

Abstract:Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, Ahead of Print. Cultural scenes are essential units and value collections within consumer spaces, and metro scenes in large cities are a new perspective for cultural scene research. Based on scene theory, we isolated distinct urban metro scenes through the perspective of slow travelling, through which we identified the dimensions of Shanghai's metro cultural scenes. Furthermore, we identified five patterns of metro cultural scenes through factor analysis and cluster analysis of scene dimensions, namely, mechanically modern, charming and expressive, local and down-to-earth, public welfare and rationality, and ordinary scenes. We found that the names of metro stations could influence scene formation by influencing the category of amenities around the station, while the convenience of the metro stations could significantly promote the formation of some scene dimensions. In addition, urban planning and crowd distribution also have an impact on the metro culture scene. Our study reveals the characteristics and patterns of metro scenes in Shanghai and proposes a pathway by which metro scenes are formed, providing a new direction for urban scene research.

Abstract:The identification of the metro’s centrality advantage stations and regions is of great significance for in-depth understanding of the centrality layout of existing urban areas. This study selects all stations of the Hangzhou Metro Planning (2005-2022) as research cases. Based on the centrality of the complex network, it will study the spatial distribution characteristics of centrality advantage stations. The study found that: subway stations at each stage can be classified into four types of centrality advantages, and there are significant differences between these types, with a significance of 0.000; at the same time, the Type 1 and Type 2 of stations establish the core framework of the centrality advantages area; the gathering hot spot roughly establishes the range of the centrality advantage area distribution, which defines the boundary of the high advantage area. The transportation network advantage of the centrality advantage stations will be transformed into the TOD development advantage and potential of its surrounding area.

Abstract:The metro station ridership features are associated significantly with the built environment factors of the pedestrian catchment area surrounding metro stations. The existing studies have focused on the impact on total ridership at metro stations, ignoring the impact on varying patterns of metro station ridership. Therefore, the reasonable identification of metro station categories and built environment factors affecting the varying patterns of ridership in different categories of stations is very important for metro construction. In this study, we developed a data-driven framework to examine the relationship between varying patterns of metro station ridership and built environment factors in these areas. By leveraging smart card data, we extracted the dynamic characteristics of ridership and utilized hierarchical clustering and K-means clustering to identify diverse patterns of metro station ridership, and we finally identified six main ridership patterns. We then developed a newly built environment measurement framework and adopted multinomial logistic regression analysis to explore the association between ridership patterns and built environment factors. (1) The clustering analysis results revealed that six station types were classified based on varying patterns of passenger flow, representing distinct functional characteristics. (2) The regression analysis indicated that diversity, density, and location factors were significantly associated with most station function types, while destination accessibility was only positively associated with employment-oriented type stations, and centrality was only associated with employment-oriented hybrid type station. The research results could inform the spatial planning and design around metro stations and the planning and design of metro systems. The built environment of pedestrian catchment areas surrounding metro stations can be enhanced through rational land use planning and the appropriate allocation of urban infrastructure and public service facilities.

Abstract:To study the topological complexity of urban rail transit (URT) networks with the multi-line transfer stations from different perspectives, Shenzhen Metro (SZM) is taken as an example and Space L & Space P models are established in this study. Then, based on multiple evaluation parameters and key nodes ranking, the differences of network topological complexity in two models are deeply explored and compared quantitatively. Some meaningful results have been obtained: (i) The characteristics of scale-free networks in Space L and Space P are proved through the eigenvector centrality distribution and truncated power-law distribution of cumulative degree. Scale-free networks show both robustness against random faults and vulnerability against deliberate attacks. The daily safety management at 16.87% of hub stations in Space P and 17.47% of hub stations in Space L should be taken seriously by metro managers in case of emergency events. (ii) Since the WS small-world effect in Space P model is more evident than that in Space L model, the connections among stations and OD accessibility of passenger are enhanced in Space P network. (iii) The important and risk nodes are concentrated in Space L and are more decentralized in Space P. P model has the stronger overall anti-attack capability than L model, which is more beneficial to the resilience of network. This study can realize the deeper understanding of URT system with different models and it can provide theoretical support for complex network analysis of URT system. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Topology Vulnerability Analysis of several Urban Metro Networks.

Abstract:In modern cities, urban metro systems gradually become an important transportation tool. The failure of metro may influence citizens' travel and cause economic losses. It is a focal problem that assessing the vulnerability of metro networks at home and abroad. Several metro networks are modeled by a modified Space L, in which metro interchange and travel time are involved. The properties of these metro networks are calculated at first, showing that at the same size, the average degree is larger, the network efficiency is better. Then the vulnerabilities of metro networks under random attack and three malicious attacks are studied and discussed. It is discovered that the metro networks are vulnerable to the biggest travel-time-efficiency node-based attack(EA) and the highest betweenness node-based attack(BA), and robust against random attack. The four attacks harm Tokyo metro network least, which has a big size, the max average degree and clustering coefficient of the seven metro networks. Finally, the top ten stations in order under EA and BA are respectively listed as a case study of Shanghai metro.

Abstract:This paper selects 12 typical urban rail transit networks at home and abroad to analyze the network topology, and the macro characteristics of the networks are studied from three aspects of development level, network form and structure efficiency. Four indicators, namely complexity and connectivity, extensibility and directness, are selected as characterization indicators. The research results show that: Hangzhou and Zhengzhou belong to the regional access network, which is in the initial stage, and the development level and structural efficiency of the network are low; Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Wuhan, Chengdu and Chongqing belong to the central coverage network, which is encrypted on the basis of regional access, but because of the large range of urban rail transit services, there is still room for encryption; Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and Paris are integrated networks, and the development level and structure efficiency of the network are relatively mature, and there are two strategies of "priority access" and "priority coverage". At the same time of urban rail transit planning and construction, we should consider the different functions of urban (suburban) railway, intercity railway and trunk railway, establish a perfect rail transit system based on the spatial scale, promote the "four networks integration" and support the development of metropolitan area, metropolitan area and urban agglomeration.

Abstract:Rail transit plays a crucial role in improving urban sustainability and livability. In many Chinese cities, the planning of rail transit routes and stations is focused on facilitating new developments rather than revitalizing existing built-up areas. This approach reflects the local governments' expectations of substantial growth to reshape the urban structure. However, existing research on transit-oriented development (TOD) rarely explores the spatial interactions between individual transit stations and investigates how they can be integrated to achieve synergistic effects and balanced development. This study proposes that rail transit systems impact urban structure through two "forces": the provision of additional and reliable carrying capacity and the reduction of travel time between locations. Metro passenger flow is used as a proxy for these forces, and community detection techniques are employed to identify the actual and optimal spatial clusters in Wuhan, China. The results reveal that the planned sub-centers align reasonably well with the optimal spatial clusters in terms of spatial configuration. However, the actual spatial clusters tend to have longer internal travel times compared to the optimal clusters. Further exploration suggests the need for equalizing land use density within planned spatial clusters served by the metro system. Additionally, promoting concentrated, differentiated, and mixed functional arrangements in metro station areas with low passenger flows within the planned clusters could be beneficial. This paper presents a new framework for investigating urban spatial clusters influenced by a metro system.

Abstract:Urban rail transit systems significantly influence land use patterns in newly developed areas, yet their impact on spatial organization and functional characteristics remains understudied. This research examines Wuhan Metro Line 11, analyzing land use within an 800 m radius of stations using Point of Interest data, ArcGIS spatial analysis, and locational entropy methods. The study reveals three station types, i.e., single-function, mixed-function, and underdeveloped, each exhibiting distinct spatial differentiation patterns. On this basis, a novel "core-diffusion" model emerges, with the highest density of functional elements observed at approximately 600 m from station centers, challenging conventional proximity assumptions. Three spatial organization modes are identified: single-core independent in two-level axis, single-core continuous in single-level axis, and double-core continuous in two-level axis. These findings contribute to the Transit-Oriented Development literature, offering sustainable insights into optimizing land use around metro stations in rapidly urbanizing contexts. This study also provides a methodological framework applicable to similar urban environments, enhancing the understanding of the complex relationships between metro development and surrounding land use patterns. These results have significant implications for urban planning and policy-making, particularly in emerging economies seeking to balance transit efficiency with sustainable urban growth.

Abstract:Real-world infrastructures modeled as complex networks have been popular topics in recent decades. As these infrastructures develop, becoming critical to support millions of people, their resilience in the face of disasters and attacks becomes an increasing concern to the engineers and stakeholders. Using a graph theory and complex network approach, we conducted an empirical study on the resilience of five metro, or subway systems selected globally. A multi-phase resilience framework was implemented from the resilience cycle concept, including preparedness, robustness, recovery, and adaptation. It also incorporated the historical flow data into the resilience analysis to account for user behavior impacts. The paper demonstrates a systematic comparison of five metro networks and explores trends in each resilience phase. Generally, diverse performances were observed among the five metro networks, with the Singapore metro showing the best resilience. It is robust to both random disruption and targeted attacks. Analysis suggests its advantage may come from both its moderate heterogeneous topology and the flow pattern, exhibiting the smallest average travel distance. Besides, the result highlights the significance of commuters’ relocation behavior between neighboring stations in the recovery stage. For the adaptation from a long-term perspective, we developed a screening tool to investigate the impact of the network expansion on the existing part of network by mapping its relationship with the characteristics of the newly connected nodes. In general, the observation of the networks’ different behaviors in flow-weighted analysis symbolizes that flow is necessary for consideration in the resilience design of real-world transportation systems.

Abstract:Understanding differentiated services is pivotal for enhancing the appeal and diversity of the metro system, yet this facet has received relatively scant attention in existing literature. To bridge this research gap, our analysis delves into the business-class services offered by the metro and compares them with the common-class offerings. First, we illustrate the spatial and temporal patterns of business- and common-class ridership across stations and hours. Second, we construct two-stage geographically weighted regression models to identify key determinants and their spatiotemporally heterogeneous effects, focusing on land-use patterns, demographic considerations, and intermodal transfer modes. Leveraging one-week smart card data collected in Shenzhen from May 13th to 17th, 2019, our findings underscore the following aspects: (1) Spatial and temporal variations in business-class ridership across stations are linked to diverse land-use configurations. (2) Bus-metro transfers, business establishments, medical facilities, and the proportion of young commuters contribute significantly to the business-class ridership. (3) The emergence of business-class trip is weakly associated with bike-sharing activities but has a strong correlation with bus transfers. (4) Business establishments and medical facilities exhibit nuanced impacts on business-class travel, with excessive aggregation leading to unintended consequences. These insights offer valuable policy implications for fostering the development of business-class services in the metro systems of other Chinese cities.

Abstract:A metro map is usually optimized for the readability of connections and transportation networks structure. In order to assure good readability and meet aesthetic considerations, a set of principles for good metro map layout are proposed. According to these principles, a new methodology based on dynamic segmentation is presented to produce the metro maps automatically. Firstly, routes are constructed according to the line attribute similarity and geometry continuity. Then a set of cartographic generalization methods about the shape, angle, length, and topology are presented for these routes. This method is validated by Beijing metro plan map. From the experiment results, it can be concluded that this new method is more effective than the static segmentation method to produce metro maps with better readability for route plans.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urban rail transit, it is more and more necessary to study its complex network structure. Taking Chengdu which is an important city in the west as an example, calculating its static statistic index under the complex network. The network structure has 136 nodes, 146 lines under the space L model, and the average degree is 2.147, the average path length is 13.1465, network number is 0.091, network connectivity is 0.0159, network efficiency is 0.1237. The overall network is a tree-like structure with small-world characteristics. The index of network number, efficiency and connectivity is not very important, which shows that the utilization ratio is not enough, the connection between the nodes is not open, and there is a certain waste on the topology structure, which provides the development and progress space for the planning of the future lines.

Abstract:The most common mass transit modes in metropolitan cities include buses, subways, and taxicabs, each of which contribute to an interconnected complex network that delivers urban dwellers to their destinations. Understanding the intertwined usages of these three transit modes at different places and time allows for better sensing of urban mobility and the built environment. In this article, we leverage a comprehensive data collection of bus, metro, and taxicab ridership from Shenzhen, China to unveil the spatio-temporal interplay between different mass transit modes. To achieve this goal, we develop a novel spectral clustering framework that imposes spatio-temporal similarities between mass transit mode usage in urban space and differentiates urban spaces associated with distinct ridership patterns of mass transit modes. Five resulting categories of urban spaces are identified and interpreted with auxiliary knowledge of the city's metro network and land-use functionality. In general, different categorized urban spaces are associated with different accessibility levels (such as high-, medium-, and low-ranked) and different urban functionalities (such as residential, commercial, leisure-dominant, and home-work balanced). The results indicate that different mass transit modes cooperate or compete based on demographic and socioeconomic attributes of the underlying urban environments. Our proposed analytical framework provides a novel and effective way to explore the mass transit system and the functional heterogeneity in cities. It demonstrates great potential for assisting policymakers and municipal managers in optimizing public transportation facility allocation and city-wide daily commuting distribution.

Abstract:<p>The number of metro lines increases every year, with most new projects being located in developing countries. Metro construction costs a huge amount of money, and it is, therefore, worthwhile to consider if the decisions related to and direction of metro construction are justified. Adopting a historical perspective, this paper selects nine global cities that constructed metro systems prior to 1913. It considers the economic and social background at their time of opening and summarizes the optimal conditions for their opening. It compares and analyzes the location, form and length of the lines in the first year, and, taking Berlin, London, New York and Paris as examples, looks into the relationship between the urban land and the expansion of the metro network. This provides insights into the key characteristics of early line networks that will help other cities to reconsider the construction of their own metros and in the future, this will help to prevent blind development.</p>

Abstract:The Metropolitan Seoul Subway system, consisting of 380 stations, provides the major transportation mode in the metropolitan Seoul area. Focusing on the network structure, we analyze statistical properties and topological consequences of the subway system. We further study the passenger flows on the system, and find that the flow weight distribution exhibits a power-law behavior. In addition, the degree distribution of the spanning tree of the flows also follows a power law.

Abstract:The traffic situation in Chinese urban areas is continuing to deteriorate. To make a better planning and designing of the public transport system, it is necessary to make profound research on the structure of urban public transport networks (PTNs). We investigate 97 large-and medium-sized cities' PTNs in China, construct three types of network models bus stop network, bus transit network and bus line network, then analyze the structural characteristics of them. It is revealed that bus stop network is small-world and scale-free, bus transit network and bus line network are both small-world. Betweenness centrality of each city's PTN shows similar distribution pattern, although these networks' size is various. When classifying cities according to the characteristics of PTNs or economic development level, the results are similar. It means that the development of cities' economy and transport network has a strong correlation, PTN expands in a certain model with the development of economy.
