Abstract:Many functional areas have been formed in the development of the city, and the gathering of taxis can basically reflect the travel situation of the crowd. Combining urban functional areas and taxi GPS data to analyze crowd travel conditions can provide decision support for the construction of smart cities. Therefore, this paper analyzed the travel situation of crowd in Changsha urban area based on multi-source data. First, this paper clusters the distribution of public transit stations in Changsha, and then imports the geographic location information of the cluster centers into the Voronoi diagram in ArcGis to divide the urban area of Changsha. Then the divided areas and Point of interest (POI) data are counted and analyzed to obtain the functionality of each area. Finally, the taxi GPS data is clustered according to the time period, and the cluster center is mapped to the urban functional area, to analyzed the crowd clustering situation of each functional area in Changsha in different time periods.

Abstract:With the continuous development of science and technology, the amount of data generated in life is increasing, and big data technology has now penetrated into all walks of life. This paper focuses on the application of big data technology in urban rail transit. Firstly, the related concepts of big data technology and urban rail transit are introduced in detail. Secondly, it emphasizes the necessity of using big data technology in urban rail transit; Finally, this paper expounds the examples of the application of big data technology in urban rail transit, including key applications such as operation and maintenance, accessibility analysis and passenger flow monitoring. Taking passenger flow monitoring as an example, based on the passenger flow data of Tianjin big data technology, the stations are classified by K-Means clustering algorithm. Big data technology can help urban rail transit improve its operational efficiency in many aspects, promote its intelligent development and accelerate the process of urbanization. Faced with the abundance and complexity of data in the era of science and technology, it will become an inevitable trend to assist management decision-making through big data technology.

Abstract:A cluster-based hierarchical location model for the selection of the proper locations and scales of urban transit hubs was developed with the objective of minimizing the demand-weighted total travel time. As an improvement to previous work, the proposed model has the following unique features: (a) it incorporates a hierarchical hub network topology that uses the concept of hub hierarchy establishment, route categorization, and service zone clustering to capture the critical operational issues for the transit network in an efficient manner and (b) it extends the previous nonhierarchical model to account for the impacts of hubs with various hierarchies as well as their interactions with lane use restrictions. Ail enhanced set of formulations along with the linearization approach was used to reduce significantly the number of variables and the computing time required to achieve the global optimum. The results of a case study in Suzhou Industrial Park in China revealed that the proposed model and solution method are quite promising for use in the planning of hub locations for the transit network. Sensitivity analysis of the performance of the system was also done to assist planners with the selection of the hierarchical structure and the design of transit routes.
Cluster Analysis on Urban Rail Transit Ticket Types

Abstract:In order to overcome and optimize the casualness of the traditional urban rail transit ticket type settings. First of all rail transit tickets will be divided into fundamental type and extended type, and on the base of it, the affecting factors of ticket type settings will be discussed; then four clustering variables are selected which include carfare frame consistency, passenger attractiveness, urban traffic coordination and city characteristic consistency, analyze ticket type settings qualitatively, establish the model in accordance with actual survey data of the forthcoming operating rail transit. The example showed that the cluster analysis is a good tools for ticket type classification, and the urban rail transit tickets decision-making model established by cluster analysis method is feasible and effective, which can be set up for the operational decisions such as the ticketing system to provide relevant information.

Abstract:Public transit services carry the majority travel demand of urban residents. There is an urgent need for transit authorities to make a better understanding of the travel characteristics of transit riders. Recently, data from smart cards have become a new source of travel survey data, providing more comprehensive spatial-temporal information about urban public transport trips. In this paper, a methodology considering travel patterns and periodicity is developed to analyze the travel characteristics of residents. The individual trip information is firstly obtained based on smart card data and transit riders'trip chains are identified. The DBSCAN clustering algorithm is applied to examine transit riders'historical travel patterns. And a methodology is then proposed for analyzing the travel periodicity based on travel patterns. Finally K-means++ algorithm is applied to cluster and evaluate the travel regularities of transit riders. In case study, focused on the transit riders of Guangzhou City, the analysis of travel characteristics are conducted. The results proved the effectiveness of the proposed method. The information mined through the method is of great significant for improving transit service strategies.

Abstract:Fuzzy cluster analysis, which divides swatches into several groups through different indexes, is a method of multitude statistical analysis. The method can be applied to every phase in transportation planning. This paper takes as an example the traffic investigation to explain the application of fuzzy cluster analysis to the process of transportation planning, and analyzes its application to other fields in transportation planning. In traffic investigation, traffic sub-areas are classified by fuzzy cluster analysis through such uses as industry, residence, construction and road green plaza. The research work can be cut down in the similar traffic sub-areas.

Abstract:Trip mode split is the result of interrelated and mutually independent factors, such as city scale, urban form, economic level, trip distance, and travel time. In order to analyze the formation of traffic structure, it is necessary to make a comprehensive study on the mechanism of these factors and obtain the basic causal relationship of them. Based on this, by using the hierarchical structure model in system engineering, this paper firstly clarifies the logical relationship of different factors. Then, the existing trip survey data of several cities is used to establish the mathematical relationship of various factors of the structure model. Finally, the mode choice forecasting method is proposed based on the structure model of influencing factors. The case study result of six cities shows small bias, indicating that the proposed method is of great practical value. Policy makers can use the results to discover the trip structure feature and grasp the direction of transportation development policy.

Abstract:Rail transit plays a crucial role in improving urban sustainability and livability. In many Chinese cities, the planning of rail transit routes and stations is focused on facilitating new developments rather than revitalizing existing built-up areas. This approach reflects the local governments' expectations of substantial growth to reshape the urban structure. However, existing research on transit-oriented development (TOD) rarely explores the spatial interactions between individual transit stations and investigates how they can be integrated to achieve synergistic effects and balanced development. This study proposes that rail transit systems impact urban structure through two "forces": the provision of additional and reliable carrying capacity and the reduction of travel time between locations. Metro passenger flow is used as a proxy for these forces, and community detection techniques are employed to identify the actual and optimal spatial clusters in Wuhan, China. The results reveal that the planned sub-centers align reasonably well with the optimal spatial clusters in terms of spatial configuration. However, the actual spatial clusters tend to have longer internal travel times compared to the optimal clusters. Further exploration suggests the need for equalizing land use density within planned spatial clusters served by the metro system. Additionally, promoting concentrated, differentiated, and mixed functional arrangements in metro station areas with low passenger flows within the planned clusters could be beneficial. This paper presents a new framework for investigating urban spatial clusters influenced by a metro system.

Abstract:Traffic zone is an advantageous tool for analyzing complex transport network of urban.It has similar traffic character- istics and strong traffic relationship within one traffic zone.Thus,it can simplify the complexity of the network.But it still rests on application about this research around the world presently.Based on analyzing concept and properties of traffic zone,a method of spatial statistic analysis is proposed to research automated division of traffic zone.Model of spatial clustering analysis algorithm is offered,and parameters models are built,such as spatial relational matrix,traffic correlation.The flow and algorithm are designed for traffic zone division.Finally,combined with floating car data and actual transport network in Shanghai,the automated division of traffic zone is realized and it is concluded.

Abstract:With the advancement of urban modernization, more and more residents are flocking to large cities, leading to problems such as severe traffic congestion, uneven distribution of spatial resources, and deterioration of the urban environment. These challenges pose a serious threat to the coordinated development of cities. In order to better understand the travel behavior of metropolitan residents and provide valuable insights for urban planning, this study utilizes taxi trajectory data from the central areas of Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Wuhan. First, the relationship between daytime taxi drop-off points and urban amenities is explored using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). Subsequently, Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) techniques were applied to identify spatial differences in these urban drivers. The results show that commonalities emerge across the four cities in the interaction between external transport stops and commercial areas. In addition, the average daily travel patterns of residents in these four cities show a trend of "three peaks and three valleys", indicating the commonality of travel behavior. In summary, this study explores the travel characteristics of urban residents, which can help urban planners understand travel patterns more effectively. This is crucial for the strategic allocation of transport resources across regions, the promotion of sustainable urban transport, and the reduction in carbon emissions.

Abstract:This paper first studies the definition and connotation of transportation efficiency. From the viewpoint of different groups participating in urban transportation systems, this paper analyzes different system functions and targets required by each group. Then the corresponding system targets and evaluation rules required by the administrator are mainly studied. Four primary aspects which have great impacts on urban transportation efficiency are proposed and the corresponding evaluation index framework and method are studied. Finally, Us paper evaluates and compares the urban transportation efficiency of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, 3 most important metropolitan areas in China. The main impact factors of urban transportation efficiency of each city are summarized.

Abstract:In view of merits of the spatial distance model, including intuition, entirety and easy operation, this model was proposed to be applied to the comprehensive evaluation of urban public transit routes. A comprehensive evaluation index system of public transit routes was established based on service level, operation level and technical level, and AHP-Delphi method was used to determine the index weight. The characteristics and meanings of the spatial division of spatial distance model in the comprehensive evaluation for urban public transportation routs were clarified, and the calculation process of spatial distance model was described in detail. The method was applied in 5 public transit routes in Zhuzhou city. The research results show that the comprehensive evaluation method of urban public transit routes based on spatial distance model is very practical and useful.

Abstract:In order to study the scale of subway network, complexity rate and coverage rate indicators are proposed from topological perspective. Scale of 52 subway network samples are compared and analyzed based on hierarchy cluster. The 52 subway networks are classified into four category according to the complexity rate and coverage rate indicators. Shanghai subway is in the highest stage and Beijing subway is in the following stage. The methodology and results can be used by planner and manager to make strategies; the vulnerability of subway network can be preliminary estimated after the relationship between network scale and scale free, small world, and vulnerability characters explored.

Abstract:The design of urban clusters has played an important role in urban planning, but realizing the construction of these urban plans is quite a long process. Hence, how the progress is evaluated is significant for urban managers in the process of urban construction. Traditional methods for detecting urban clusters are inaccurate since the raw data is generally collected from small sample questionnaires of resident trips rather than large-scale studies. Spatiotemporal big data provides a new lens for understanding urban clusters in a natural and fine-grained way. In this article, we propose a novel method for Detecting and Evaluating Urban Clusters (DEUC) with taxi trajectories and Sina Weibo check-in data. Firstly, DEUC applies an agglomerative hierarchical clustering method to detect urban clusters based on the similarities in the daily travel space of urban residents. Secondly, DEUC infers resident demands for land-use functions using a naïve Bayes’ theorem, and three indicators are adopted to assess the rationality of land-use functions in the detected clusters—namely, cross-regional travel index, commuting direction index, and fulfilled demand index. Thirdly, DEUC evaluates the progress of urban cluster construction by calculating a proposed conformance indicator. In the case study, we applied our method to detect and analyze urban clusters in Wuhan, China in the years 2009, 2014, and 2015. The results suggest the effectiveness of the proposed method, which can provide a scientific basis for urban construction.

Abstract:Accessibility-oriented public transportation planning can improve the operational efficiency of public transportation, guide orderly urban development, and alleviate issues such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and resource consumption in large cities. To promote the practical application and widespread adoption of public transportation accessibility estimating systems, this study proposes an improved public transport accessibility levels (PTAL) method. It innovatively incorporates residents' preference indices for different modes of transportation and addresses the challenge of missing timetable data in the calculation process. Using actual data from Shenzhen, a case study is conducted to analyze the public transportation accessibility index and compare the results obtained through k-means clustering, the equal spacing method, the quantile method, and the application of the London PTAL method. The research findings indicate that the optimal number of clusters for public transportation accessibility index analysis in large cities is six when using clustering algorithms. Among the statistical analysis methods, the quantile method shows favorable performance. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison of different classification methods confirms that the improved PTAL method offers better discrimination in estimating public transportation accessibility levels compared to the London PTAL method. The study concludes by providing guidance on how cities with different characteristics can reference the improved PTAL method.

Comprehensive Evaluation Method of Regular Transit System in Small and Medium-sized Cities

Abstract:In this paper ,an analytic hierarchy process and a fuzzy evaluation method are combined and used to eval-uate urban transit systems of small and medium-sized cities .Firstly a hierarchy-based comprehensive evaluation system is developed ,and then an AHP method is used to determine the relative weight of each indicator .In this process ,SPSS software is used to carry out a cluster analysis of experts'weights ,where those weights which are far away from the resul-ting clusters are removed ,which appears to make the evaluation weights from the experts more reasonable .Furthermore , using a sample of 12 small or medium-sized cities ,the sampling distribution of the indicators of the transit systems of the small or medium-sized cities is developed and the membership function of each indicator is established through the Matlab Fuzzy Toolbox .Finally ,a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model of transit systems of small and medium-sized cities is proposed ,which is also verified through the transit system of Fuxin City .The model can provide not only a ranking score ,but also the degree of the proximity of the transit system being evaluated to various levels .

Abstract:To solve the problems such as subjectivity existed in urban road network comprehensive evaluation,this paper brings forward the principle of gray cluster analysis with a computational method for the work sequences. The weight of indexes can be generated automatically during the evaluation progress without artificially assignment,which could avoid subjective factor.Comprehensive appraisement of Xiaoshan road network in Hangzhou city is presented using this method. According to process and results of the implementation,some useful suggestions are made to improve the capabilities of Xiaoshan road network.

Abstract:Passenger flow data are necessary for making and coordinating operational plans for urban rail transit (URT) systems; the availability and the service state of those systems directly influence the activity of a city and its people. Although many transit assignment models have been developed, the results of passenger flows estimated by these models as well as assumptions made in the estimation process, especially for large-scale, complex, and dynamically changing URT networks, had not been validated. This paper proposes a methodology that can validate existing URT assignment models by using automatic fare collection data and a cluster analysis technique. Initial applications to the URT system of Shanghai, China, which is one of the largest in the world, show that the proposed approach works well and can efficiently find the origin–destination pairs in which passengers' route choices are misestimated by those assignment models. The analysis suggests that several factors result in errors (for the URT assignment model used in Shanghai). These factors include the threshold for the difference in travel costs, a misrepresentation of the transferring cost, and inadequate values for the standard deviation. This information is useful for detecting errors in existing URT assignment models, leading to improvements.

Abstract:Special external environments will lead to significant changes in the use behavior and dependence degree of different PT travellers, but it is difficult to analyze the mechanism of the hierarchy shift of travelers' public transportation (PT) dependence. Exploring travelers' dependence on PT is conducive to understanding individuals' travel choice behavior and optimizing PT operation organizations. Developing methods for analyzing the internal causal relationship between travelers' dependence on PT and the key influencing factors under the special condition is an issue. Therefore, the individual travel chains are constructed by associating and matching the multisource PT big data and travel survey data. Thereafter, the K -means algorithm and an improved Apriori algorithm are developed to mine the frequent association rules of groups, and a framework of cross-hierarchy policy implications is derived based on the differences in association rules. Finally, the stated preference survey method is used to measure the effectiveness of the policies.
