Abstract:Temperature stress is the main problem faced by ultra-long concrete structure, how to accurately simulate the structural temperature effect and take effective measures to control the crack generation is the key to deal with this kind of problem. Based on the finite element analysis and practical engineering application of ultra-long concrete structures, the calculation method of structural temperature difference and the determination principle of key parameters were proposed, and a new method of crack-control was also introduced. The analysis shows that the finite element modeling can reveal temperature variation effect effectively and reasonably. The proposing floor elevation zone can weaken the impact of temperature stress, and avoid ultra-long concrete structure cracking.

Abstract:This paper is a meta-analysis of recent domestic and foreign research on freezing-thawing effects on concrete durability. The main theories on the mechanisms of freeze-thaw damage to concrete are introduced: the hydrostatic pressure theory, the osmotic pressure theory, the critical water saturation degree theory, the dual mechanism theory, and the micro-ice-crystal lens model theory. The influence laws of freezing-thawing on the mechanical properties of concrete are summarized, and countermeasures to improve concrete durability in freezing-thawing circumstances are presented. This work provides valuable references for future engineering constructions in cold regions.

Abstract:Once ice forms in highly saturated concrete material, internal tensile stress will be generated and causes damage to the material, which is a serious problem for concrete structures in cold and wet regions. On one hand, each component (porous body, ice and liquid) should satisfy the compatibility of stress and strain, which has been discussed by the poromechanical theories. On the other hand, if some empty voids exist, the hydraulic pressure will release when liquid water escapes from the expanded area according to Darcy's law. Recent closed freeze-thaw tests on the saturated mortar showed a consistent tendency: as the number of freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) increases, the deformation changes from the expansion to the contraction. In order to make clear the physical and mechanical changes during this process, a more comprehensive hydraulic model is developed, which combines both the mechanisms mentioned above. The estimated strain behavior by this model is in a good agreement with experimental measurements, and also, it has good potential and is more flexible to be applied to different cases such as different saturation degrees and cooling rates. The permeability change can be also considered in this model as a reflection of frost damage level.

Abstract:The effects of minimum temperature and salt solution on frost resistance property of normal performance concrete(NPC)with different water cement ratio are analyzed through the measuring of mass loss and dynamic elastic modulus loss of the specimen.Three different environments are considered in the freezing-thawing test,the standard pure water environment,the 5% sodium chloride solution environment and the -10 ℃ freez- ing environment.The results show that the temperature amplitude has a significant effect on the anti-frost property.The damage increases as the temperature goes down,and in the meantime the water cement ratio has a greater influence on the performance of specimen.During the -10 ℃ freezing environment,there is scarcely scaling phenomenon,but in the 5% sodium chloride solution environment,both the dynamic elastic modu- lus and mass of the specimen decrease rapidly.

Abstract:The present study concerns the quantification of the environmental factors influencing the durability of concrete structures under on-site frost environments, including the number of freeze-thaw cycles, average freezing rate and time proportional coefficient of water saturation in concrete. A statistical method is put forward to get the on-site freeze-thaw cycles by using the average annual number of negative-temperature days as an index. In addition, a practical formula is obtained to predict the natural freeze-thaw cycles accordingly. Then, a conceptual approach considering the time proportion of concrete in saturated condition is proposed for general atmospheric environment. According to the average freezing rate in the freezing and thawing, the proportional coefficient of concrete damage in different freeze-thaw environments is obtained. Based on the aforementioned factors, relationship between different freeze-thaw environmental conditions is established. As an example, procedure of predicting the equivalent number of laboratory freeze-thaw cycles from on-site freeze-thaw cycles is given. Thus, the relationship between on-site environment and indoor experiment is established.

Abstract:Based on the equilibrium, continuity, and energy principles of multiphase porous media, a thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling model was developed for concrete upon freezing. To solve the governing differential equations, a three-dimensional finite-element analysis is performed based on the software program Comsol Multiphysics. Finally, temperature distributions, frozen water contents, and strains as a function of freezing time are predicted. A comparison of the analytical results with available experimental data for concrete mortars illustrates the validity of the proposed model. This numerical model can be used to assess the effect of cooling rate, the role of pore-size distribution, the role of permeability, the effect of cross section size and shape, the effect of superimposed stresses attributable to applied loads, and other factors that cannot easily be evaluated by current tests.

Abstract:Based on the microstructure of concrete,the time dependent temperature behavior of normal and high-performance concrete during construction was investigated,along with the in-depth research on the continuously changing physical and mechanical properties of concrete at early age.Considering material and microstructure characteristics of concrete,the mechanism,analytical method and control of early age cracking of concrete structures were studied.A method to predict and control concrete cracking was proposed.The damage modeling of the crack propagation was established.Based on the theoretical and experiment research,the development of cement hydration,temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical and fracture properties of concrete at early age were systematically evaluated.With considering the influence of shrinkage,temperature,creep,ultimate tensile strain and elastic modulus on early age cracking of concrete,an incremental method was established to calculate the stress development in concrete structures.The analytical results agree well with both the laboratory test results and the observations from actual construction projects.The research results show that the analysis of early age cracking of concrete should be based on a dynamic and systematic investigation on the temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical properties and structure characteristics of concrete.The proposed early age cracking analysis model of concrete fits well with the experiment results.The application of theoretical model and numerical simulation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis.
Experimental studies on mechanical properties of concrete under freeze-thaw action

Abstract:The influence caused by freeze-thaw action on mechanical properties of concrete, such as on compressive stress-strain relationship and cleavage and bonding performance, is studied. Moreover, according to bearing state of column members in actual engineering, we also investigate the degradation of material and mechanical properties of concrete suffered from dual factors of compressive stress and freeze-thaw cycles. The research results disclosure that structural mechanical properties and synchronous service capacity with reinforcement bars and concrete are degraded at the same time when material performances of concrete are damaged. From the experimental results, conclusions have been drawn that if bearing state of structure is considered, the deterioration caused by freeze-thaw action is aggravated, and the descending tendency is more significant than that singly under freeze-thaw action. This paper refers some valuable information to consummate durability design theory for concrete structures which serve in freeze-thaw environment.

Abstract:At present, the built or newly built underground structures are mostly concentrated in developed areas along the coast, lakes, and rivers, while deep soft soil is widely distributed in these areas. The cold heat treatment method is one of the advanced foundation treatments and has broad application prospect. However, geothermal exchange and temperature field change are complex Stefan problems with mobile boundaries, internal heat sources, and phase changes. It is important to determine the freezing area and freezing temperature reasonably under the premise of ensuring the safety of the frozen construction. Therefore, this paper summarizes the research methods of freezing method construction of cross passage and introduces the research on the constitutive model of freezing undisturbed soil, the theory of freezing wall calculation, and the evolution mechanism of the temperature field. Then, a brief evaluation is made in view of the lack of research, and the development direction of this field is put forward with the research characteristics. It is to deepen the understanding of the deformation mechanism of cross passage embedded in soft soil caused by the freezing and melting.

Abstract:Freeze–thaw damage significantly contributes to the degradation of concrete structures. A critical precondition for concrete to experience frost damage is reaching its critical saturation level. This study conducted freeze–thaw experiments on concrete specimens under both open and sealed moisture conditions to elucidate the mechanisms of freeze–thaw damage and the pivotal role of moisture. The research assessed concrete’s water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and compressive strength under restricted water conditions to study damage accumulation patterns. The findings indicate that implementing water limitation measures during freeze–thaw cycles can regulate concrete’s water absorption rate, reduce the loss of ultrasonic pulse velocity, and minimize strength degradation, with an observed strength increase of up to 36.22%. Consequently, these measures protect concrete materials from severe frost damage. Furthermore, a predictive model for concrete freeze–thaw deterioration was established based on regression analysis and relative dynamic modulus theory, confirming the critical role of water limitation in extending the service life of concrete structures in cold regions.

Abstract:A series of experimental studies of mechanical properties of concrete after freeze-thaw action have been conducted. These researches involved the damage caused by freeze-thaw action on compressive stress-strain relationship, splitting strength and mechanical behavior under repetitive load action. Moreover, according to bearing state of members in actual engineering, we also investigated the damage of frost-resisting and mechanical properties of concrete suffering from dual actions of compressive stress and freeze-thaw cycles. Experiment indicates that due to repeat freeze-thaw cycles, degradation of mechanical properties, including compression strength, splitting strength and repeated load-resistant property so on, is more serious, then degradation patterns correlated with freeze-thaw parameters of mechanical properties are found. Meanwhile a conclusion has been drawn that when bearing state of concrete is considered, the damage caused by freeze-thaw action is aggravated, and the degradation is more significant than that under single freeze-thaw action. This study may serve as a reference to establish frost-resisting durability design theory of concrete structure.

Abstract:Temperature stress on super-long concrete structures is an issue,which should be discussed during structure design.Combined with an engineering practice,a computing method about concrete shrinkage and equivalent temperature variation was introduced.A design method about resisting temperature stress of unbonded prestress was used.Several construction measures were used to reduce the temperature variation and shrinkage effects such as reasonable set of late poured band and double beam guide seam.All these methods and measures can effectively reduce the impact of temperature stress in concrete structures.

Abstract:Large-scale freezing projects, especially horizontal freezing projects, suffer from the problem of long exposure times, and weakening of the frozen curtain often occurs in the excavation stage. An analytical solution for the temperature between the freezing pipe and excavation surface was deduced in this study to evaluate the freezing effect at this stage. The solution is verified by in-situ measurements of a large-scale freezing project. The analytical solution shows that the temperature is related to the thermal conductivity of the frozen curtain, the shotcrete, the refrigerant temperature, the excavation surface temperature, and the design scheme of the frozen curtain. Moreover, the excavation surface temperature ( T s ) is the critical factor. Then, the equations for the thickness and average temperature of the frozen curtain on the side close to the excavation area are derived. Numerical calculations of the frozen curtain base on analytical solution were carried out to analytical frozen curtain. The results show that when the heat dissipation of the exposed excavation surface is considered, the tensile stresses of the vault and bottom plate increase by up to 135%, the compressive stress of the sidewall increases by 29%, and the shear stress of the shoulder increases by 144%. While three solutions were proposed, and their application scenarios and effects are discussed. This study can provide a reference for the design of large-scale freezing projects to protect the frozen curtain after excavation.

Influence to frost-resistant performance of concrete in stress state

Abstract:The durability of concrete on the action of two damage factors of freeze-thaw cycles and preloading compressive stress was investigated. 15 concrete prisms with 3 groups were applied on four different preloading compressive stress levels by specially designed equipments. The damage of concrete on the mutual action of two damage factors is more quickly than the simply superimposition of damage on individual action of two factors. The higher of the preloading compressive stress was, the more quickly of the damage is. Weight loss rate is not apparent on the action of compressive stress.

Abstract:Lots of standard freeze-thaw experimental data cannot be directly used to predict freeze-thaw durability of concrete in field because of difference between laboratory and field environments.How to simulate the damage development process of concrete under freeze-thaw cycles in field by the standard freeze-thaw experimental data in laboratory and then to obtain a prediction of concrete freeze-thaw durability is necessary for engineering.The difference between laboratory environment and field environment is analyzed firstly,and then it is assumed that concrete pore distribution is relative constant and concrete in field is placed in saturated environments.On the base of mechanism of fatigue damage,the Miner's damage cumulative principle and equivalent principle are used to simulate freeze-thaw damage process of concrete in field by climatological data.The obtained formula can be used to calculate equivalent numbers of freeze-thaw cycles in laboratory by the numbers of freeze-thaw cycles in field,which can connect different freeze-thaw environments in laboratory and field.Using standard freeze-thaw experimental data and equivalent laboratory freeze-thaw cycle number,the freeze-thaw life of concrete in field can be predicted.The prediction results comparing with field data of concrete structures in Shisanling Reservoir and some ports in North China are satisfied.

Abstract:Abstract In cold areas, freeze–thaw damage seriously affects the long-term use and safe operation of concrete structures. The constitutive model is an important foundation for predicting deformation and strength characteristics of concrete materials and for the non-linear analysis of concrete structures. This study is based on the elaboration of methods for the constitutive model of damaged materials by using damage mechanics and others. This study focuses on the existing constitutive model results of concrete under the static axial compression load, dynamic load, and coupling environmental load, and analyzing the problems in existing studies. Research has shown that segmented models exhibit higher fitting accuracy of concrete freeze–thaw constitutive model under static axial compression loads. By defining coupled damage variables, it is possible to approach the actual freeze–thaw damage of concrete under environmental coupling, and attention should be paid to the differences or interactions between damage factors. In order to meet the actual engineering needs of high altitude and cold areas needs to expand the temperature range of freeze–thaw tests and consider the dynamic loads impact on concrete damage, the establishment of constitutive model of concrete under the actual freeze–thaw damage is the focus of frost-resistant durability research of hydraulic concrete in cold regions.

Abstract:The extreme climate in Tianshan area has a significant impact on the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete control structure for debris flow. This paper describes a fiber reinforced concrete designed for Tianshan area. The impact factors on the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete are analyzed. The optimal composition for concrete control structure is discussed. And the engineering economic of such material is compared with that of Portland cement concrete. Research results shows fiber reinforced concrete can greatly improve the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, and significantly extend its life with a great of practical value.
