Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been utilized as a promising power source for new energy vehicles. Their performances are greatly affected by the structural design of the flow field in the bipolar plate. In this paper, we present a novel three-dimensional (3D) bionic cathode flow field, inspired by the small intestinal villi. The structural design and working principle of the 3D bionic flow field units are first described. A 3D numerical model is developed to study the mass transfer and distribution of the reactants and products, as well as the polarization performances of the PEMFC with the 3D bionic cathode flow field. The simulation results indicate that the proposed 3D bionic flow field can significantly improve the reaction gas supply from the flow field to porous electrodes, and thus would be beneficial for the removal of liquid water in the cathode. The mass transfer of gas in the PEMFC can be enhanced due to the increasing contact areas between the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the cathode flow field, and the distribution of currents in the membrane would be more uniform. The obtained results demonstrated the feasibility of using the 3D bionic flow field for the development of highly efficient PEMFCs with high power density.

Abstract:Modeling is a powerful tool for the design and development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This study presents a one-dimensional, two-phase mathematical model of PEMFC to investigate the two-phase transport process, gas species transport flow and water crossover fluxes. The model reduces the computational time for PEMFC design with guaranteed accuracy. Analysis results show that the concentration and activation overpotentials of the cell decrease with the increase of operation pressure, which result in enhanced cell performance. Proper oxygen stoichiometry ratio in the cathode decreases the cell activation overpotential and is favorable for performance improvement. The cell ohmic resistance correspondingly increases with the increase of catalyst layer thickness, which leads to a deteriorated cell performance. The improvement on cell performance could be facilitated by decreasing the membrane thickness. Predicted results show that the present model is a useful tool for the design optimization of practical PEMFCs.

Abstract:Abstract: The polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) possesses many advantages for both automotive and stationary application, including high energy efficiency, low operating temperature, zero emission, and so on. Aside from the fact that great improvement should be made on its key materials, i.e., the ORR electrocatalysts and proton exchange membrane, it is believed that the PEM fuel cell performance is greatly affected by the operating temperature, gas inlet humidity as well as the flow pattern, and so on [1,2]. Thus, in this work, a 3D steady state model is established to investigate detailedly the effects of the flow pattern (co-flow and counter-flow), the anode and cathode gas inlet relative humidity (RH) on the cell performance. The governing equations of the 3D model result from careful analysis on the electro-chemical reactions, current conservation, membrane proton migration, membrane water transport and water-vapor phase transition. The membrane water transport takes into accounts the electro-osmatic drag and water back diffusion, and the conservation of momentum, species and energy is applied to all components of the PEM fuel cell. Experimental validation is also performed and fits very well with the simulation. Figure 1 shows the current density distribution for different flow patterns: (a), co-flow and (b), counter-flow. The corresponding achievement will offer an efficient guide on the design and performance optimization of PEMFC. Abstract:Optimizing flow field structures plays a crucial role in enhancing the mass transfer of reactant gas and improving the output power density of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, a PEMFC model with a three-dimensional (3D) fine-mesh flow field is developed and investigated in detail using a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The flow velocity, oxygen partial pressure and oxygen molar fraction distribution in the 3D fine-mesh flow field are analyzed and compared with the parallel flow field. The numerical simulation results show that as the porosity of the 3D fine-mesh structure increases, the local flow velocity increases, the oxygen partial pressure drop decreases, and the oxygen molar fraction increases, which are conducive to improving the output performance of fuel cells. At an operating voltage of 0.4 V, the peak power density of the 3D fine flow field model with a porosity of 0.9 is 21.5% higher than that of the parallel flow field model.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs) need good air flow to get uniform distribution of the current density and species concentration for improved performance.Five kinds of PEMFCs air flow patterns were evaluated in simulations and experiments.The results show that the predicted performance agreed well with the experimental results.The performance of the fuel cells increased from the parallel field design to the mesh field,parallel-serpentine field,and finally the merge field design.There was a slight difference between the simulated performance of the parallel-series field design and the experimental results.

Abstract:The proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFC) use proton exchange membranes(PEM) as their electrolytes. The performance of the PEMFC is strongly dependent on the characteristics of the PEM. In this paper, the requirements of the PEM utilized in the PEMFC were analyzed. The per_fluorinated, partially fluorinated and non_fluorinated PEM were introduced respectively. The structures, preparation, properties of the various types of PEM and their applications in the PEMFC were also discussed in detail.

Abstract:The oxidant supply coupled with the cooling task in open-cathode proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) creates a simple system configuration. Based on a simulated condition which was previously established for evaluating cell performance of different membrane electrode assemblies, this work has conducted performance optimization by altering electrocatalysts, thickness of micro-porous layer (MPL) and membranes. The thickness of the catalyst layers was around similar to 35 mu m with 20 wt% Pt/C, and reduced to only 12 mu m with 60 wt% Pt/C. Although a thick catalyst layer resulted in a stable performance at various air stiochiometric ratios, especially under high temperatures where cell performance decreased due to a low Pt utilization and poor mass transport of proton and reactants in the cathode. The cathode with 2 mg cm(-2) carbon loading in the MPL gave the best performance and the cell voltage varied between 0.71 and 0.62 V at 800 mA cm(-2) in the temperature range from 50 degrees C to 60 degrees C. Finally, different membranes were investigated, and a thin composite Nafion/PTFE membrane around 17 gm showed better performance comparing to Nafion 211, which can be attributed to a good water retention capacity owing to easy crossover of hydrogen and water through the membrane. Abstract:The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) plays an important role in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance. Typically, the structure comprises of a polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched by agglomerate catalyst layers at the anode and cathode. Optimization of various parameters in the design of MEA is, thus, essential for reducing cost and material usage, while improving cell performance. In this paper, optimization of MEA is performed using a validated two-phase PEMFC numerical model. Key MEA parameters affecting the performance of a single PEMFC are determined from sensitivity analysis and are optimized using the response surface method (RSM). The optimization is carried out at two different operating voltages. The results show that membrane thickness and membrane protonic conductivity coefficient are the most significant parameters influencing cell performance. Notably, at higher voltage (0.8 V per cell), the current density can be improved by up to 40% while, at a lower voltage (0.6 V per cell), the current density may be doubled. The results presented can be of importance for fuel cell engineers to improve the stack performance and expedite the commercialization.

Abstract:In this paper, a multiphysical multidimensional proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) model is presented. The model covers fluidic domain with 2-dimensional modeling. Firstly, the meshes of fluid channels are presented by fully considering the flow field form. Then, the gas pressure drop due to sharp and curved U-bends (channel angles) are developed considering three losses factors: straight pipeline, the bend elongated section and excess losses coefficients. The proposed model simulation results are then compared with a Ballard 1.2 kW NEXA fuel cell system, and show a good agreement between the simulation and experimentation. In addition, the proposed multidimensional model also provides the reactant pressure 2D distribution in both cathode and anode sides.

Abstract:The article establishes a three-dimensional multiphase proton exchange membrane single-cell model and investigates the impact of precision flow field design on the electrochemical characteristics, heat mass transfer properties, and phase change characteristics of fuel cells. The simulation model is analyzed using COMSOL 6.0 multiphysics software and validated using experimental data under the same operating conditions. The research results indicate that precision flow field design can enhance the electrochemical characteristics of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) by reducing concentration overpotentials through improved gas mass transfer, thus increasing the performance of cell. Precision flow field design improves gas and current density distribution uniformity, promoting more uniform electrochemical reactions and enhancing cell durability. Finally, precision flow field design increases gas mass transfer rates, effectively removing liquid water from the interior and facilitating smoother gas transport to the active regions. This study provides new insights into flow field design for fuel cells.

Abstract:The high power density and rapid adjustment to power demands make proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) one of the best candidates for a clean alternative energy sources for the 21st century. Analytical and experimental works have been presented in this paper to investigate a single PEMFC. These include a study of PEMFC performance, the effects of operating temperature and pressure on performance, and flow characteristics within the cell. Experimental data show the positive effects of temperature and pressure on performance, which is also analyzed by the two-phase multicomponent flow model validated by test data. The predicted performance curves agree reasonably with the experimental data and demonstrate the increase in cell performance at elevated temperature. In addition, the simulation model proposed in this paper can also reasonably capture the flow characteristics in a PEMFC.

Abstract:Reversible proton exchange membrane fuel cell (RPEMFC) is an electrochemical cell working both as the water electrolyzer (charging) and fuel cell (discharging). Promoted by the improvement of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology, RPEMFCs are attracting much attention. Its working principle was described, and development status in electro catalysis, membrane electrode assembly (MEA) preparation, performance, and application were reviewed. One key issue is the development of the bifunctional electrodes for oxygen reduction and evolution, but its highly activity and long-term stability of electro catalysts on the dual modes are under solving. Due to its theoretical energy density (as high as 3 600 Wh/kg), reliability and long lifetime, RPEMFCs have the potential to be well in excess of the energy storage systems of secondary battery, especially in weight-sensitive application, such as solar-powered aircraft, and space shuttle.

Abstract:The design of the flow field structure in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) plays a pivotal role in determining their electrochemical performance. This study presents a lattice-based radial flow field configuration designed to improve PEMFC efficiency. The difference between the flow field and the traditional flow field is that the flow field is segmented by a small cylindrical rib instead of a longer rib. The research employs COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software to establish the model of the operating conditions of PEMFCs, focusing on analyzing how the number of rib branches and the minimum rib radius influence the oxygen distribution, water distribution, and pressure drop in the system. The results demonstrate that varying the number of rib branches and the minimum radius of the cylindrical ribs has a pronounced impact on the PEMFC's performance. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of multiple design configurations reveals the optimal operating parameters. Specifically, within a quarter of the computational domain, the configuration featuring a minimum rib radius of 0.135 cm and six rib branches delivers the best electrochemical performance.

Abstract:The structure of the flow field can directly affect the gas distribution and the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This work presents the modifications of porous flow fields in PEMFCs using the computational fluid dynamics method. Different designs of porous flow fields are employed and evaluated, so as to improve the uniformity of the cell performances over the entire cell area. The effects of manifold structure on the distribution of the key operating parameters including the reactant molar fraction, temperature, current density, etc. are discussed. It is found that the manifold designs can significantly affect the flow behaviors in the porous flow fields, especially in the corner area. The convergent inlet and divergent outlet manifold channels favor homogenizing the flow distribution and reducing the pressure drop. Moreover, a proper porosity of the flow field can benefit the uniform distribution of the reactant and improve the cell performance.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an electrochemical device with clean energy,low pollution and high efficiency. The PEMFC history and its present RD status in the world are introduced. Especially the three key parts of the PEMFC system including proton exchange membranes, electro catalysts and membrane electrodes are discussed, referring to their general requirement and manufacture techniques. The merits and demerits of the recent developed perfluorosulfonic acid proton exchange membrane are also compared. Finally, PEMFC applications in novel automobiles are listed and its problems with it for the future study are pointed out. As a matter of fact, PEMFC is a promising technique and can be expected to be commercially applied in electric automobiles firstly.
Optimization study of proton exchange membrane fuel cell parameters based on Taguchi method for central spiral flow field

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have emerged as devices to replace high-emission, highly polluting fossil fuels, owing to their clean, low-carbon, and zero-pollution characteristics. However, challenges such as high production costs and maintenance difficulties have impeded their commercialization. Addressing this issue, optimization studies on PEMFC flow fields become crucial. This study proposes a novel central spiral flow field design and establishes a three-dimensional model for central spiral flow field PEMFCs. Utilizing the Taguchi method and setting target functions, a 10-parameter, 3-level optimization study is conducted on the structural and physical parameters of this flow field. The target functions primarily focus on increasing current density while minimizing pressure drop losses. Results indicate that under consistent conditions, the central spiral flow field exhibits superior polarization performance and higher output power compared to traditional basic parallel flow fields. Additionally, the L 27 (3 10 ) orthogonal array established through the Taguchi method is analyzed using both the intuitive method and range analysis, leading to the identification of two optimal flow field design schemes. A comparison between the two reveals that the scheme obtained through the intuitive method shows more significant advantages. This scheme is then selected as the optimal central spiral flow field and compared with a parallel flow field under the same conditions. The results indicate that, compared to the parallel flow field, the optimal central spiral flow field increases the limiting current density by 73.8%, the maximum power density by 107%, and the net power at an operating voltage of 0.6 V by 89.4%.

Abstract:In this paper, the flow channel of the radial proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is optimized by the topological optimization method. Using the SNOPT algorithm, a two-dimensional stable constant temperature model is freely constructed in the cyclic sector design domain. Topology optimization aims to maximize the efficiency of PEMFC and minimize the energy dissipation of reaction gas. We analyze radial topology flow channels' mass transfer capacity and cell performance with different maximum volume constraints. The results show that under high current density, the performance of the optimized channel is significantly better than that of the traditional channel. Increasing the maximum volume constraint is beneficial for improving the mass transfer of PEMFC. At 0.6 V, the cell performance of Scheme 4 is 14.9% higher than the serpentine flow channel and 9.5% higher than the parallel flow channel. In addition, in the optimal selection, 3D simulation modeling is carried out for more accurate verification.

Abstract:AbstractProduction of electrical energy in an environmental‐friendly manner is important for meeting the increasing demand of electricity in smart vehicles and energy devices. Benefitted from its moderate working temperatures and high conversion efficiency, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has received broad attention and commercialized rapidly in the past decades. Herein, we comprehensively review the advanced types of electrolytes and their underlying working mechanisms to offer a considerate guidance to develop novel electrolytes with high proton conductivity and wide working temperature window. Moreover, to rationally design cost‐effective and robust electrodes, the well‐developed anode and cathode and their fundamental working principles are elaborately reviewed and discussed. Furthermore, from the viewpoint of overall structure, fabricating approaches of functional components of PEMFC and their corresponding influencing factors are minutely reviewed and analyzed with the aim of tuning cell performance and preparing PEMFC in a high‐throughput way. Lastly, we highlight the conclusions of this review and present the penitential developing directions.
