Abstract:Accelerator mass spectrometry(AMS) is the most sensitive analytical technique for measuring long-lived radionuclides, which is widely used in the fields of environment, geology, archaeology and physics. In recent years, the miniaturization of AMS device has been greatly developed in the world. In order to develop miniaturized AMS devices and their analysis technology, China institute of atomic energy has independently developed a single-stage AMS device with an acceleration voltage of 0.2 MV and a tandem AMS device with an terminal voltage of 0.3 MV, respectively. Based on the single-stage AMS device, the high efficiency transport technique and background eliminating method have been developed for 14C measurement, and realized the high sensitivity measurement of 14C. The measurement sensitivity reaches 14C/12C (atomic number ratio)=2×10–15. Using the 0.3 MV tandem AMS device, the gas stripping conditions, background eliminating and detection methods of 129I at low ion energy were systematically studied, and the high efficient transmission and high sensitive measurement methods of 129I were established, the sensitivity is 129I/127I=1×10–14. This is the first time to develop miniaturized AMS devices in China, which lays the foundation for the localization of AMS.
Development of A Multi-Spectra Based Portable Water Quality Analyzer

Abstract:A novel portable multi-parameter water quality analyzer was developed based on the multi-spectra information fusion theory. The analysis method, hardware structures, working principles and software functions are described in the present paper. As a small size, rapid testing and outdoor green instrument, this analyzer can be used to measure six water organic pollution indicators, including TOC, COD, etc., through analyzing the spectra of a small amount of water sample without any chemical reagent. The practical water analysis experiments showed that the multi-spectra fusion method used by this analyzer possesses a higher measurement precision than that of the UV spectral analysis method, which is popularly used by the water quality analyzers in the market.

Abstract:Spectrum based water quality analyzer for comprehensive organic pollution index evaluating is a kind of green measurements with prosperous futures. Due to the low estimation precision of single-spectrum based analyzer and the complementary advantages of multi-spectrums, a modeling method based on information fusion of the ultra-violet absorption spectrum and the fluorescence emission spectrum is adopted for rapid measure of organic pollution indices such as COD, TOC, etc. A module structure is designed for portable realization to perform the field mobile tasks and rapid scene measurements. The experimental results show that this instrument possesses a better prediction capability than single UV based instruments popular in the market.
Ratiometric SERS Quantification of SO2 Vapor Based on Au@Ag-Au with Raman Reporter As Internal Standard.

Abstract:Practical gas sensing application requires sensors to quantify target analytes with high sensitivity and reproducibility. However, conventional surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor lacks reproducibility and quantification arising from variations of "hot spot" distribution and measurement conditions. Here, a ratiodependent SERS sensor was developed for quantitative label-free gas sensing. Au@Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were filtered onto anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) forming Au@Ag-Au@AAO SERS substrate. 4-MBA was encapsulated in the gap of Au@Ag-Au and served as the internal standard (IS) to calibrate SERS signal fluctuation for improved quantification ability. Combined with headspace sampling method, SO2 residue in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can be extracted and captured on the immediate vicinity of Au@Ag-Au surface. The intensity ratio I-613 (-1)(cm) /I-1078 (-1)(cm) showed excellent linearity within the range of 0.5 mg/kg-500 mg/kg, demonstrating superior quantification performance for SO2 detection. Signals for concentration as low as 0.05 mg/kg of SO2 could be effectively collected, much lower than the strictest limit 10 mg/kg in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Combined with a handheld Raman spectrometer, handy and quantitative TCM quality evaluation in aspect of SO2 residue was realized. This ratiometric SERS sensor functioned well in rapid on-site SO2 quantification, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and simple operability.

Abstract:Atomic emission spectrometry is widely applicable to clinical,petrochemical,food,environment and many other fields.In order to satisfy the new technology needs of element component analysis,we developed a novel microwave plasma torch atomic emission spectrometer.The configuration and working principle of the spectrometer,the control system based on Modbus protocol and solid-state microwave source are introduced in this paper.Finally,element detection limits and multi-element detection capability are tested.The results showed that the instrument is stable and reliable,the detection limits for most elements reach the level of 10-8~10-10 g/mL,can simultaneously achieve multi-element detection.

Abstract:To solve the problem of the energy reduced in ultraviolet section because of rays lengthened in atomic absorption spectrophotometer with a tandem atomizer,the way which we optimized optical path and circuit design in 4600 atomic absorption spectrophotometer with a tandem atomizer to improve the energy in ultraviolet section was focused on discussing.After tested arsenic element(193.7nm)emphatically,result verified:the performance of edge energy, linear,characteristic quantity,precision all fited in with national standard.

Abstract:The article briefly described the development history of chemical vapor generation-nondispersive atomic fluorescence spectrometry.Advances were reviewed for recent 10 years involving novel atomizers (DBD atomizer,FLGS miniature hydride atomizer,electrothermal-flame tandem atomizer,multilayer porous array flame converging atomizer),novel reaction systems (electrochemical vapor generation,photochemical vapor generation,plasma-induced vapor generation,etc.),and novel sampling methods (multisyringe flow injection analysis,solid sampling).The future development direction of chemical vapor generation-nondispersive atomic fluorescence spectrometric technology was also prospected.

Abstract:Because of its small volume, simple structure, low energy consumption, low working temperature, strong ability of sample dissociation/excitation and other significant characteristics, the dielectric barrier discharge is especially suitable for the miniaturization and portable analytical instruments. By now, atomizer or excitation source based on dielectric barrier discharge has applied in atomic absorption spectrometer, atomic fluorescence spectrometer and atomic emission spectrometer successfully, which promoted the development of miniaturization atomic spectrum instrument. This paper reviews DBD's recent progress in atomic spectrum field, emphatically introduces the applications of the DBD-AFS system in different sampling modes and analyses, along with their respective merits and demerits. This paper also introduces the new applications of DBD in vapor generation and direct solid sampling. Due to the DBD's reaction mechanism is still unclear; the study of its subsequent development may be restricted.

Abstract:We reviewed the current key techniques of portable mass spectrometer and discussed its application in environmental monitoring. At present, mass spectrometer has two development directions. One direction is high-throughputs, high-sensitivity and high-resolution laboratory mass spectrometer. The other is small, in-situ monitoring portable mass spectrometer. With the rapid development of electronic technology and new materials, portable mass spectrometers are widely used in environmental pollution monitoring because they have the advantages of small size, light weight and low power consumption.

Abstract:The only one set of Sputter Initiated Resonance Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (SIRI-TOFMS) in China was designed and developed. A liquid gallium ion source with micron level diameter of beam, frame-style piezoeletric ceramic sub-micron sample manipulator, a secondary electron imaging system and a computer controlled precise targeting system as well as a real colour big screen image displaying system were added so as to improve its microanalysis capability. By means of this apparatus, trace analysis of Au in minerals and Cu in standard steel samples were carried out. The detection limit of them is 40ng/ and microg/g level, respectively. Aside from the above detections, other preliminary researches ere also performed.

Abstract:A small and portable incoherent broadband cavityenhanced absorption spectrometer (IBBCEAS) for NO3 and N2O5 measurement has been developed. The instrument features a mechanically aligned non-adjustable optical mounting system, and the novel design of the optical mounting system enables a fast setup and stable operation in field applications. To remove the influence of the strong nonlinear absorption by water vapour, a dynamic reference spectrum through NO titration is used for the spectrum analysis. The wall loss effects of the sample system were extensively studied, and the total transmission efficiencies were determined to be 85 and 55% for N2O5 and NO3, respectively, for our experimental setup. The limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 2.4 pptv (1 sigma) and 2.7 pptv (1 sigma) at 1 s intervals for NO3 and N2O5, respectively. The associated uncertainty of the field measurement was estimated to be 19% for NO3 and 22-36% for N2O5 measurements from the uncertainties of transmission efficiency, absorption cross section, effective cavity length, and mirror reflectivity. The instrument was successfully deployed in two comprehensive field campaigns conducted in the winter and summer of 2016 in Beijing. Up to 1.0 ppb NO3 C N2O5 was observed with the presence of high aerosol loadings, which indicates an active night-time chemistry in Beijing.

Abstract:Cryogenic X-ray spectrometers are advantageous in the spectrum research for weak and diffusive X-ray source due to their high energy resolution, high detection efficiency, low noise level and non-dead-layer properties. Their energy resolution independent of the incident X-ray direction also makes them competitive in diffusion source detection. The requirements for X-ray spectrometers have heightened in recent years with the rapid development of large scientific facilities where X-ray detection is demanded, including beamline endstations in synchrotron and X-ray free electron laser facilities, accelerators, highly charged ion traps, X-ray space satellites, etc. Because of their excellent performances, cryogenic X-ray detectors are introduced into these facilities, typical examples of which are APS, NSLS, LCLS-II, Spring-8, SSNL, ATHENA, HUBS. In this paper, we review the cryogenic X-ray spectrometers, from the working principle and classification, system structure, major performance characteristics to the research status and trend in large scientific facilities in the world.

Abstract:A miniaturized atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) was proposed with a planar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) microplasma as an atomizer, a charge coupled device (CCD) spectrometer as a spectral detector, and a hydride generation (HG) unit as a sampler, and the potential analytical capability was evaluated through the determination of cadmium. Auxiliary hydrogen was added to enhance the atomic absorption signals and the potential mechanism of enhancement effect was studied by use of various techniques. The HG-DBD-AAS was further applied to the determination of Cd, yielding a 1.7-fold enhancement in AAS response with added hydrogen and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3 μg L−1 under optimized conditions. Good agreement with the certified values, and desirable spike recoveries ranging between 98% and 108%, were obtained for two certified reference materials and several real water samples, respectively. It can be useful in field analysis of many trace elements with high detectability.

Abstract:Spectral analysis is an important tool that is widely used in scientific research and industry. Although the performance of benchtop spectrometers is very high, miniaturization and portability are more important indicators in some applications, such as on-site detection and real-time monitoring. Since the 1990s, micro spectrometers have emerged and developed. Meanwhile, with the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have been applied in the design of various micro spectrometers in recent years, further reducing the size of the spectrometers. In this paper, we review the research progress of micro spectrometers based on nanomaterials. We also discuss the main limitations and perspectives on micro spectrometers.

Abstract:High sensitivity and low spectral background of the Raman instruments are essential for the analysis of weak Raman-active samples. The design of the present portable fiber Raman probes leads to an interferential background that limits the application of the portable Raman technique in many situations. In this work, the spectral backgrounds of commercial probes with different optical configurations were analyzed, and the results indicated the backgrounds arose from the objective lenses and the dichroic filters. A universal solution was proposed, and a flat and clean background was achieved by utilizing the longpass optical configuration and an off-axis parabolic mirror. Combined with a high-throughput spectrometer with a research-grade CCD, this portable Raman equipment was successfully applied to identify the corrosion products on the surface of uranium (with extremely weak Raman signals). The developed portable Raman instrument with high sensitivity and low background is anticipated to be very useful for the on-site Raman detection of weak signals.

Abstract:In this paper, a portable gamma-ray spectrometer for real-time and in-situ gamma-ray detection applications is presented. By combining a quasi-hemispherical CdZnTe (CZT) semiconductor detector and a Geiger-Muller (GM) counter together, a wide dose rate range is achieved, ranging from 0.1 μSv/h to 100 mSv/h with a relative error of less than 10%. The GM counter is used to measure dose rate from 1 mSv/h to 100 mSv/h. With CZT, the spectrometer can provide a high energy resolution spectrum for nuclide identification and a high precision dose rate at low dose rates. The full width half maximum (FWHM) resolution is 2.2% at 662 keV below 70 μSv/h and is better than 3.3% at 3.8 mSv/h. The weight of the spectrometer is 3.2 kg for handheld and the runtime is up to 12 h without charging. For preliminary applications, the spectrometer was used to measure the gamma radiation around the Back-n white neutron beam line at China Spallation Neutron Source and around the steam generator in the nuclear power plant at Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station.

Research status of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer

Abstract:Background: Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer has been improved rapidly in these years. Purpose: Research status of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometers is reviewed, covering the main components in the spectrometer and spectra processing algorithms. Methods: On the component aspect, the working principles and performances of high-voltage generator, X-ray excitation sources, especially X-ray tubes and detector are compared. On the spectra processing aspect, results of different algorithms in spectrum de-noising,background subtraction, decomposition of the peaks and calculating the intensity of the fluorescence are analyzed separately. Results: On the component aspect, the effects to sensitivity and resolution of the spectrometer being caused by the high-voltage of the voltage generator, intensity of X-ray and resolution of the detector are concluded.On the spectra processing aspect, feasibilities of various algorithms are suggested. The advantages of wavelet transform, artificial neural network and partial least-squares method are discussed. Conclusion: Present difficulties in further improving of the spectrometer performance are analyzed. The prospect and the necessity of further research of EDXRF have been suggested.
