Abstract:It is proved in this paper that for u≡v≡0(mod6), v>100 and u⩾4v, any nearly Kirkman triple system of order v can always be embedded in a nearly Kirkman triple system of order u. Embeddings of nearly Kirkman triple systems of order v<100 are also discussed.

Abstract:Let RB(3, ; v) denote a resolvable -fold triple system of order v. It is proved in this paper that the necessary and sufficient conditions for the embedding of an RB(3, ; v) in an RB(3, ; u) are u 3v and (i) u v 3 (mod6) if 1 (mod2), (ii) u v 3 (mod3) if 0 (mod4), or (iii) u v 0 (mod3) and v 6 if 2 (mod4). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the embeddings of resolvable directed triple systems are also determined for all .

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, existence and construction of nearly Kirkman systems are discussed. In the case k = 4, it is proved that there exists a nearly Kirkman system N K S (2, 4; v ) if and only if v ≡ 0(mod 12) and v ≥ 24, with at most 16 possible exceptions.

Abstract:A Steiner quadruple system of order with resolvable derived designs (every derived Steiner triple system of order v at a point is resolvable), abbreviated as RDSQS , has been used to construct a large set of Kirkman triple systems of order 3 v . In this paper, an RDSQS is reduced to an overlarge set of Kirkman triple systems of order v with an additional property (OLKTS ), which plays the same role in constructing an LKTS(3 v ) as an RDSQS . Some recursive constructions of OLKTS s are also established. As a result, some infinite classes of OLKTS s and LKTSs are obtained.

Abstract:The existence of large sets of Kirkman triple systems (LKTSs) is one of the best-known open problems in combinatorial design theory. Steiner quadruple systems with resolvable derived designs (RDSQSs) play an important role in the recursive constructions of LKTSs. In this paper, we introduce a special combinatorial structure RDSQS*(v) and use it to present a construction for RDSQS(4v). As a consequence, some new infinite families of LKTSs are given.

Abstract:We propose a method for generating large sets of a given Steiner triple system of order V,or of a given Kirkman triple system of order V,and obtain a sufficient condition for the existence of large sets in terms of cyclic numbers.This paper gives two theorems: Theorem1: A sufficient condition for the existence of large sets of Steiner triple systems S(V) and Kirkman triple systems K(V) is the existence of a cyclic number with totally different distances.Theorem2: There exist large sets for non-decomposable Kirkman triple systems and there exists no large set for a decomposable one.

Abstract:Let SSR(v, 3) denote the set of all integer b* such that there exists a RTS(v, 3) with b* distinct triples. In this paper, we determine the set SSR(v, 3) for v ≡ 3 (mod 6) and v ≥ 3 with only five undecided cases. We establish that SSR(v, 3) = P(v, 3) for v ≡ 3 (mod 6), v ≥ 21 and v ≠ 33, 39 where P(v, 3) = {mv, mv + 4, mv + 6, mv + 7, …, 3mv} and mv, = v(v − 1)/6. Weak colourings of Kirkman triple systems

Abstract:A $\delta$-colouring of the point set of a block design is said to be {\em weak} if no block is monochromatic. The {\em weak chromatic number} $\chi(S)$ of a block design $S$ is the smallest integer $\delta$ such that $S$ has a weak $\delta$-colouring. It has previously been shown that any Steiner triple system has weak chromatic number at least $3$ and that for each $v\equiv 1$ or $3\pmod{6}$ there exists a Steiner triple system on $v$ points that has weak chromatic number $3$. Moreover, for each integer $\delta \geq 3$ there exist infinitely many Steiner triple systems with weak chromatic number $\delta$. We consider colourings of the subclass of Steiner triple systems which are resolvable. We show that for each $v\equiv 3\pmod{6}$ there exists a Kirkman triple system on $v$ points with weak chromatic number $3$. We also show that for each integer $\delta \geq 3$, there exist infinitely many Kirkman triple systems with weak chromatic number $\delta$. We close with several open problems.

Abstract:In a recent work, Jungnickel, Magliveras, Tonchev, and Wassermann derived an overexponential lower bound on the number of nonisomorphic resolvable Steiner triple systems (STS) of order $v$, where $v=3^k$, and $3$-rank $v-k$. We develop an approach to generalize this bound and estimate the number of isomorphism classes of STS$(v)$ of rank $v-k-1$ for an arbitrary $v$ of form $3^kT$.

Abstract:A famous theorem of Kirkman says that there exists a Steiner triple system of order n if and only if n ≡ 1,3 mod 6. In 1973, Erdős conjectured that one can find so-called 'sparse' Steiner triple systems. Roughly speaking, the aim is to have at most j−3 triples on every set of j points, which would be best possible. (Triple systems with this sparseness property are also referred to as having high girth.) We prove this conjecture asymptotically by analysing a natural generalization of the triangle removal process. Our result also solves a problem posed by Lefmann, Phelps and Rödl as well as Ellis and Linial in a strong form, and answers a question of Krivelevich, Kwan, Loh and Sudakov. Moreover, we pose a conjecture which would generalize the Erdős conjecture to Steiner systems with arbitrary parameters and provide some evidence for this.

Abstract:We study a class of combinatorial designs called Kirkman systems, and we show that infinitely many Kirkman systems are well-distributed in a precise sense. Steiner triple systems of order $n$ can achieve a minimum block sum of $n$. Kirkman triple systems form parallel classes from the blocks of Steiner triple systems. We prove that there are an infinite number of Kirkman triple systems that have a minimum block sum of $n$. We expand this to quadruple systems. These concepts can then be applied to distributed storage to spread data across the servers, and servers across locations, using Kirkman triple systems, while having data well distributed by popularity, measured by the minimum block sum.

Abstract:We work over the complex number field C. In this paper, we study multi-canonical systems |mKV | on complex projective 3-folds V of general type. On a smooth complex complete curve C of genus g(C) ≥ 2, it is well known that the 3-canonical map φ3 := Φ|3KC | is always an embedding. On a smooth minimal projective surface S of general type, Bombieri [2] proved that the m-canonical map is a birational morphism for all m ≥ 5. The work of Tsuji [31], Hacon–McKernan [13] and Takayama [28] says that there exists a universal constant r3 such that the r3-canonical map Φr3 is birational for all smooth projective 3-folds of general type. We note that Tsuji [31] announced a very large r3. Recently Chen and the first author [5] have given an explicit r3 (≤77). Under extra assumptions there have been already the following optimal results about r3 for minimal projective 3-folds X of general type with Q-factorial terminal singularities:
