Abstract:Well-aligned organic nanotubes including acenaphthylene, carbazole, anthracene, phenanthrene and naphthalene have been fabricated within the nanochannels of the porous anodic alumina (PAA) membranes by a simple physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal that these organic nanotubes are highly ordered with a uniform diameter in range of 100–200nm and a length of up to tens of microns. The fluorescence spectra of these nanotubes exhibit obvious blue shift compared to those of the bulk crystals, which can be attributed to the surface effect of the nanostructures.

Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTAs) were respectively fabricated using traditional one-step oxidation and re-oxidation method on a titanium surface in fluorine-containing electrolytes. Microstructures, optical properties of specimen were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, digital microscope, field-emission scanning electron microscope and ultraviolet-visible spectroscope. Compared with the one-step oxidation, the resulted samples showed more uniform surface, longer tube length and statistical higher absorption in visible light region. Importantly, a new growth mechanism named template-induced growth model is proposed to explain the growth of TiO2-NTAs prepared by re-oxidation approach in present work. Besides, water contact angles of samples before and after irradiated by UV light were measured and discussed in detail. It is confirmed that samples obtained from re-oxidation method have more hydroxyl groups can be formed when irradiated by UV light, which lead to more sensitive light-induced hydrophilicity finally. The light-induced hydrophilic performance of TiO2-NTAs would be favorable to improve the likelihood of electrolyte contacting of the surface, which is useful in many realistic application instances. Abstract:An ethylene-air laminar diffusion flame successfully provided silicon substrates of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template with vertically oriented well-aligned carbon nanotubes. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that open-tipped carbon nanotubes consisting of tube elements with the same length and diameter uniformly coated the template. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses revealed these nanotubes to be multiwalled carbon nanotubes, some well graphitized. It was found that cobalt catalyst particles, but not the porous aluminum templates, helped the growth of carbon nanotubes through graphitization and bonding of carbon nanotubes to the silicon substrates.

Abstract:Templated synthesis of polythiophene micro- and nanotubules using an alumina membrane is described here. Flexible polythiophene tubules up to 60 mum in length and aligned tubule/gold bilayer films (see Figure) with an area as large as 1.8 cm(2) can be obtained. These bilayer films show broad, strong redox responses with a capacitance 30 times that of a normal polythiophene film.

Abstract:Organic heterojunction is indispensable in organic electronic devices, such as organic solar cells, organic light-emitting diodes and so on. Fabrication of core–shell nanostructure provides a feasible and novel way to prepare organic heterojunction, which is beneficial for miniaturization and integration of organic electronic devices. Fabrication of nanotubes which constitute the core–shell structure in large quantity is the key for the realization of application. In this work, a simple and convenient method to prepare nanotubes using conjugated copolymer of perylene diimide and dithienothiophene (P(PDI-DTT)) was demonstrated. The relationship between preparation conditions (solvent atmosphere, solution concentration and pore diameter of templates) and morphology of nanostructure was studied systematically. P(PDI-DTT) nanotubes could be fabricated in regular shape and large quantity by preparing the solution with appropriate concentration and placing anodic aluminium oxide template with nanopore diameter of 200 nm in the solvent atmosphere. The tubular structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. P(PDI-DTT) nanotubes exhibited electron mobility of 0.02 cm2 V–1 s–1 in field-effect transistors under ambient condition. Light-emitting nanostructures were successfully fabricated by incorporating tetraphenylethylene into polymer nanotubes.

Abstract:Al-based anodic porous alumina membranes with ordered nanopore arrays are fabricated for exploring the template synthesis of carbon nanotubes and nanowires. Via the polymerization of acrylonitrile in the ordered nanopores of the membranes and subsequent heating, the polymer structure was converted into a quasi-graphitic structure. Atomic force microscopy observations revealed that the quasi-graphitic nanostructures are located in the pores of the porous alumina membrane, displaying a hexagonal symmetry. Raman scattering investigation confirmed the formation of carbon nanotubes in the nanopores. With further mild, controlled treatment in aqueous alkali and acidic solution, individual alumina nanotubes (ANTs) coaxially wrapping the carbon nanotubes and nanowires are obtained, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy observations.

Abstract:We present a simple fabrication process for aligned ZnO nanotubes (NTs). These NTs have been synthesized by a sol–gel template process within the nanopores of a polycarbonate membrane. The obtained NTs are 20-μm long and 200-nm wide which correspond, respectively, to the thickness and channels diameter of the used polycarbonate membrane. Structural and chemical investigations show that these NTs consist in agglomerated ZnO nanoparticles with controlled size (<10 nm). The growth mechanism of these nanoobjects is clarified. These nanomaterials can have a wide range of applications in various fields such as molecular sensing, robotic, and thermoelectric and photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Alumina nanotube (ANT) and nanowire (ANW) arrays were produced from highly ordered porous anodic alumina (PAA) by etching in phosphoric acid and subsequent thermal treatment. The domain structures that have small sizes provide more boundaries and break the hexagonal symmetry of the PAA template, thereby inducing star-like splitting modes. Using very thin PAA films, ANTs and their arrays are fabricated, whereas ANWs and their arrays are produced when using thick films. This is due to the thin wall between nanopores. Our results provide some mechanistic and fundamental information pertaining to the fabrication of nanostructures via a PAA template.

Abstract:Inorganic nanotubes with unique and well-defined porous structures show promising applications in diverse functional materials. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate inorganic nanotubes with precise length controllability. Herein, we report the synthesis of block copolymers consisting of a crystalline π-conjugated oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) block, a hydrophilic poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) segment and a photo-cleavable o-nitrobenzyl (ONB) junction. By taking advantage of crystallinity of OPV segment, self-seeding approach of living crystallization-driven self-assembly was employed to generate uniform fiber-like micelles composed of an OPV core and a P2VP corona. The P2VP corona was then used to host the formation of silica, titania and Pt(0)-embedded silica shell. After the photo-cleavable OBN junctions were broken under light irradiation, the OPV core can be removed in a good solvent for OPV segments to give silica, titania and Pt(0)-embedded silica nanotubes. Significantly, the Pt(0)-embedded silica nanotubes exhibited much higher catalytic activity toward the reduction of p-nitroaniline than Pt(0)-embedded silica nanofibers with the same Pt content, probably owing to the presence of porous channel for nanotubes. This work opens a new avenue to fabricate inorganic nanotubes of controlled length.

Abstract:Here we describe a simple physical vapor deposition (PVD) method to prepare large quantity of highly monodispersed perylene nanotablets with a deposition-temperature controlled approach. The nanotablets produced are 1 microm octagon with 100-200 nm thickness. Confocal microscopic images of the nanotablets excited with a UV light show not only yellow color emission which is quite different from perylene monomers but also the obvious light-wave guiding properties. The formation of beta form nanocrystals shows that our method is highly selective for only one kind of perylene nanocrystals, which makes sure the uniform optical and electronic properties of the whole thin film. The morphology of the unique perylene nanotablets is significantly decided by the strictly required temperature of the depositing substrates. This approach is simple and template free and the as-prepared nanotablets possess smooth surface. The coating of the nanotablets can change the superhydrophilic surface to a superhydrophobic one which is an important application property for fabricating stable nanodevices.

Abstract:Fabricating well-aligned carbon nanotubes, especially, on a silicon substrate is very important for their applications. In this paper, an aligned carbon nanotube array has been prepared by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons catalyzed by nickel nanoparticles embedded in porous silicon (PS) templates. High-magnification transmission electron microscopy images confirm that the nanotubes are well graphitized. The PS substrates with pore sizes between 10 and 100 nm play a control role on the growth of carbon nanotubes and the diameters of the tubes increase with the enlargement of the pores of the substrates. However, such a control role cannot be found in the macro-PS substrates.

Abstract:Aligned carbon nanotube films coated with amorphous carbon were developed into novel templates by atomic layer deposition. Freestanding macroscopic metal-oxide nanotube films were then successfully synthesized by using these templates. The reactive amorphous carbon layer greatly improved the nuclei density, which ensured the high quality of the films and allowed for precise control of the wall thickness of the nanotubes. Using template-synthesized alumina nanotube films, we demonstrate a humidity sensor with a high response speed, a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grid, and a catalyst support. The cross-stacked assembly, ultrathin thickness, chemical inertness, and high thermal stability of the alumina nanotube films contributed to the excellent performance of these devices. In addition, it is expected that the metal-oxide nanotube films would have significant potential owing to their material richness, macroscopic appearance, flexibility, compatibility with the semiconducting technologies, and the feasibility of mass production.

Abstract:Aligned carbon nanotube sheets are developed as a new family of electrodes to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells. The energy conversion efficiency of the resulting cell is higher than the randomly dispersed carbon nanotube film and comparable with the platinum. Novel and flexible solar cells can be easily made from such carbon nanotube sheets with high potentials.

Abstract:Aligned, open-tipped carbon nanotube arrays of high density and uniformity were synthesized via a flame method on silicon substrates using a nanoporous template of anodized aluminum oxide from which the nanotubes were grown. The diameter and length of the nanotubes are controlled by the geometry of the aluminum oxide template. These results show the feasibility of integration between carbon nanotube arrays and silicon microelectronics.

Abstract:Based on an in situ template method, branched phosphazene -containing nanotubes were synthesized via a controlled two-step adding technique of acid acceptors. Structural and morphological characterizations of the as-synthesized products were performed by SEM, TEM, EDX and FTIR. The results showed that the branched nanotubes were had inner and outer diameters of 8 and 50-150 nm, respectively. In addition, a formation mechanism for the nano-structures was proposed.

Abstract:PZT nanotubes were synthesized in through-hole PAA templates by using a sol-gel method together with spin-coating technique.The effect of the sol concentration on the nanotube morphology was studied.The morphology and microstructure of PZT nanotubes were examined by SEM and TEM.Their crystal structure and chemical composition were determined by XRD and EDS.The results show that the as-prepared nanotubes are composed of tetragonal perovskite nanocrystallites and appear to have high toughness.The average diameter of the nanotubes is about 75nm,in agreement with that of nanochannels of original PAA templates.The tubule wall thickness is about 7nm.When the sol concentration was in the range of 0.1 to 0.4mol/L,PZT nanotubes could be formed within the nanochannels of PAA templates.Moreover,the sizes of nanocrystallites within the walls of PZT nanotubes were increased with the increase of the sol concentrations.

Abstract:Polypyrrole nanotubes with high electric conductivity and azo function have been fabricated in high yield via an in-situ polymerization.During the process fibrillar complex of FeCl_3 and methyl orange(MO),acting as a reactive self-degraded template,directed the growth of polypyrrole on its surface and promoted the assembly into hollow nanotubular structures.Cationic surfactant,cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB),was introduced into the system to control the size and morphology of PPy nanotubular/wire structures.The effect of the concentration of CTAB and different surfactant species on the initial template and subsequent polymerization process of pyrrole was investigated systematically.Polyaniline nanotubes were also synthesized via MO-FeCl_3 fibrillar complex,which acted as conventional"hard templates"in this case and can be removed easily by simple washing.

Abstract:An aligned and well-distributed carbon nanotubes array was produced by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons catalyzed by nickel nanoparticles embedded in porous silicon (PS) substrates. Scanning electron microscope images show that the nanotubes form an aligned array approximately perpendicular to the surface of the PS substrate and the diameters of most of the tubes within the array are 10–30 nm. High-magnification transmission electron microscopy images confirmed that the nanotubes are well graphitized and typically consist of about 15 concentric shells of carbon sheets. Furthermore, the strong field emission from the aligned carbon nanotubes emitter by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons was observed.

Abstract:A new kind of aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (AMWCNT)/hydrogel composite template was prepared through a simple polymerization process. A shell of hydrogel with a thickness of up to tens of nanometers was uniformly coated on single nanotube of AMWCNT. The hydrogel shell can swell a great deal of reagents in aqueous or alcohol solution for further chemical reactions on the surface of the AMWCNTs. The AMWCNTs coated with titania nanoparticles were prepared with this template and aligned titania nanowires with lengths up to a few millimeters were obtained after calcinations. This new composite template also provides an efficient route to modify aligned carbon nanotubes with inorganic species.
