Abstract:This paper introduces a process for synthesizing one-dimensional ZnO nanoneedles; that is, at first, a pure zinc nanocrystalline layer was plated, and then the ZnO nanoneedle grew upon the layer through thermal oxidation in the air. The morphologies and microstructures of the plated Zn nanocrystallines and ZnO nanoneedles were characterized by using SEM, HRTEM and XRD. And the influences of pulse-plating parameters and thermal oxidation temperature on the growth of ZnO nanoneedles were experimental studied systematically. The results revealed that: 1) the ZnO nanoneedles can be produced under low temperature between 300 degrees C to 400 degrees C during thermal oxidizing, which exhibits a round and clean surface in diameter 60 nm at the root, 20 nm at the tip and length up to 5 mu m, and grows vertically from the base metal along the hexagonal < 0001 > direction; 2) the Zn nanocrystalline plating plays a key role in the nanoneedle growth in high density and root diameter control due to the nano surface activity; 3) comparing with the V-L-S or V-S mechanism, a novel growth mechanism "solid state bottom-up diffusion model" is proposed based upon the ZnO piezoelectric effect.
