Abstract:This paper introduces a design of the VAV air conditioning system of an office building. This system adopted the total volume control method which is different from the pressure control method. Practice proved that it is simply designed, convenient in debugging and operation management and runs steadily besides low fabricating cost.

Abstract:Concerning the nonlinearity,time-variant and imprecise model in the Variable Air Volume(VAV) air-conditioning systems,an adaptive variable discourse fuzzy control was proposed to improve the dynamic performance and accuracy of the control system.Based on derivation of VAV air-conditioning terminal model,simulation was conducted.The simulation results show that compared with the traditional PID control and conventional fuzzy control,variable discourse fuzzy control improves the system dynamic and static characteristics and steady state accuracy.Therefore,the fuzzy controller's performance has been greatly improved with good control effect.

Abstract:A new ventilation system is proposed. According to the layout of modern garden offices, which are separated into several zones, a jet distribution is introduced to the separated working zone in order to realize the individual ventilation and the improvement of indoor air quality and comfortableness. Abstract:This paper presents a design scheme of the stratified air conditioning system, in accordance with the temple hall’s large space and function characteristics. The indoor stratified air conditioning environment is formed by the low velocity air supply of fan coil units embedded below the Buddha statue. The interface of stratified air is only 1.7m high, because the large amount of air unavoidably penetrates the room due to the prohibition of closing the door. From the tested results, the design not only meet the temple hall’s operational requirements for decoration and the open front door, but also greatly reduces the energy consumption of the air conditioning at the cost of the comfortable feeling of air conditioning. In this work, some suggestions are also given in order to further improve the comfort and lower the energy use.

Abstract:Variable air volume (VAV) and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems are widely used in office buildings. This study investigated VAV and VRF systems in five typical office buildings in China, and compared their cooling energy use. Site survey and field measurements were conducted to collect the data of building characteristics and operation. Measured cooling electricity use was collected from sub-metering in the five buildings. The sub-metering data normalized by climate and operating hours indicated that the cooling energy consumed by VRF systems was up to 70% lower than that consumed by VAV systems. This was mainly because of the different operation modes of both system types that led to significantly fewer operating hours for the VRF systems. Building simulations were used to quantify the impact of operation modes of VRF and VAV systems on cooling loads. A prototype office building in China was used as the model. The simulation results showed that the VRF operation mode required much lower cooling load when compared to the VAV operation mode. For example, the cooling loads decreased by 42% in Hong Kong and 53% in Qingdao. The key findings include the following: the VRF systems operated in the part-time-part-space mode enabling occupants to turn on the air-conditioning only when needed and when the spaces were occupied. However, the VAV systems operated in the full-time-full-space mode limiting occupants' control of operation. These findings provide insights into VRF systems operation and controls as well as their energy performance, which could help guide HVAC designers on system selection and building operators or facility managers on system operations to achieve low- or zero-net energy buildings. Abstract:To make the VAV system controlling highly efficient, energy-saving and comfortable, the authors study the ratio-control of fresh-air and indoor-air, the temperature-control and humidity-control, the frequency-control of fans in the four-pipe-system. From the point of view of intelligent building controlling we analyse the conversion condition of all kinds of work-point by using enthalpy-humidity chart, adjusting the wind-system or the water-system to meet the demand of air-condition design. Some suggestions for the control of transition seasons are presented in the end.

Abstract:The terminal device (VAVBOX) is the key part in variable air volume (VAV) air conditioning system, by which we can adjust air output, compensate indoor load change, keep room temperature to be constant. The control effect of VAV system depends largely on the performance of terminal device and the coordination between terminal device and the whole system. In this paper, BAS - 3520 DDC produced by Advantech corporation is used to design VAV air conditioning pressure independent terminal controller. Experiments show that the terminal controller based on DDC can well satisfy the system control requirement, the transition time and overshoot of the indoor temperature achieve good improvement. At the same time, with Webaccess introduced, VAV BOX operation condition can be monitored by host computer, what makes the daily management of the VAV BOX more intelligent.

Abstract:As for the separated air conditioner in the public is not facilitate for unified management and often causes a waste of energy, so we put forward a kind of centralized control system, which is suitable for small and medium-sized public places, to manage many separated air conditioner together. Through the development of the software VC++ and the communication with the internal 51-series microcomputer CPU of the air conditioner in many different rooms by using the bus RS485, we could realize the controlling of the turning on or off of the conditioner as well as the temperature and strength of the wind of the air conditioner centrally. The system is characterized for its highly safety performance and its ease to use.

Abstract:Presents the operating and testing results of the system applied in this building,which show that the liquid desiccant fresh air handling unit can totally eliminate the space moisture load and the sensible load from the occupants and that the indoor temperature is about 25-26 ℃,the relative humidity is around 50%-60%,and the dry fan-coil unit can keep dry condition in the whole cooling period.In the project,the fresh air handling unit should be operated 1.5-2 hours in advance to eliminate the latent heat load and the high temperature water chiller should be operated 1-1.5 hours in advance to carry away the indoor sensible heat load.

Abstract:In large public facilities, such as airport terminals or open-plan office spaces, the HVAC system typically consumes substantial amounts of energy. However, individuals often gather at specific areas while other zones are occupied by transient or occasional users. To minimize operational energy usage, this paper aims to reduce thermal comfort demands in non-targeted areas. This paper introduces a method for regulating the thermal environment around occupants exclusively in the variable-air-volume (VAV) air conditioning running mode. The investigation utilizes Airpak modeling and experimental verification techniques. Additionally, an analysis of temperature field and velocity field distributions within the room under the "personal space" operation mode is presented. The results suggest that adjusting the numbers of air vents, openings, airflow velocities, and air supply orientations can establish a comfortable thermal environment for inhabitants and reduce the overall ADPI value. The combined air supply mode leads to a 16.7% reduction in power usage compared to traditional full-space operation.

Abstract:Appropriate thermal modeling is the first step in controlling thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption. In this article, the thermal modeling of an office room with a variable air volume (VAV) system is considered. Various thermal modeling methods are reviewed, and finally, the zonal method is selected. The main advantage of the selected method is its simple formulation but still accurate results. Furthermore, the output equations are in the state-space forms which are suitable for control applications. The thermal model is obtained by considering the airflow patterns in the office room. One of the key features of the obtained model is its applicability to winter as well as summer conditions. DesignBuilder software is also used to validate the thermal model. Results indicate the accuracy of the obtained thermal model in all weather conditions.

A New Approach to Commissioning of the VAV Control System

Abstract:Commissioning of the HVAC system has been practiced in buildings for the purpose of energy conservation and performance optimization. Commissioning of the HVAC automation system should be paid more attention. In this paper, Objective Control Method (OCM) is proposed to analyze the operational performance of VAV control system. The approach starts with the evaluation of satisfaction of indoor thermal comfort, and then is followed by the performance analysis of different control loops with a graphic chart of relations between different parameters. Finally the operation fault is detected. This approach has been applied and validated in a real VAV control system of a commercial office building in Beijing with one year’s on-site measured data. By means of OCM, phenomena of ‘hunting’ in VAV control system are deeply studied. As a new commissioning approach of VAV control system, OCM is of great feasibility and convenience.

Abstract:The primary mission of this design is the air conditioning design of a hotel in Guangzhou city. The calculation of cooling load & heat load, division of the air conditioning system and the determination of the scheme, the design of the duct and water system, and the design of the smoke prevention and extraction system are all included. According to the related standard and considering the energy saving and comfort requirements, the air conditioning system are determined through the economic and technological comparison. Primary return air system is used for open office area and dining hall; fan-coil units with fresh air system is adopted for the guest rooms of the hotel; and the VRV system is adopted for the large conference room. The new air in restaurant rooms and the large conference room is handled by full-heat type fresh air exchanger; new air in guest room is handled by air conditioning units.

Abstract:The outdoor low temperature fresh air can be used as a free cold source to eliminate waste heat for the building interior zones during the transition season and winter. This paper takes a project in Hunan as an example, and the project building interior zones is 25m×7m×3.9m(L×W×H). Using Fluent software to simulate the temperature field and velocity field both the interior and exterior zones of the engineering offices. The simulation results show that using the displacement ventilation system to take the outdoor air into inner rooms not only cooling but also improving the air quality and adding comfort. According to the simulation results and outdoor air dry bulb temperature and enthalpy values, the h - d diagram is divided into three air conditioning conditions (summer, winter, transition season), and three different operation adjustment methods have been proposed corresponding to each air conditioning condition, which will reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning system.

Abstract:The energy efficiency of an air-conditioning system is reduced when operating under low cooling load, e.g., when few occupants remain in the building, leading to extra energy consumption. This paper proposes an operating strategy for air-conditioning systems based on the indoor occupancy rate (R), where the start-stop is adjusted according to R while still satisfying indoor environment quality (IEQ) requirements. The dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) is simultaneously used to feed in fresh air and combined with indoor fan coil units to independently control humidity and temperature. An office building air-conditioning system was tested with the improved operating strategy applied. The test results show that the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the cooling plant reached 4.2, a 7.2% improvement over the same system operating under previous conditions. The IEQ in the test building was also significantly improved. Because the air-conditioning system did not operate at low energy efficiency, 15% of the total energy consumption of the system was saved.

Abstract:In this paper the non-isothermal ventilation of VAV system is studied by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. A new zero equation model (Chen et al) of turbulent flow is introduced to simulate the nonisothermal airflow accompanied with a validated sample. With the validated CFD model, the indoor airflow and temperature distribution in a full-scale room in high rise building are numerically solved. They are also compared with the conventional jet theory method. Thus advantages and disadvantages between the two methods are given.

Abstract:Air-conditioner is developed from the viewpoint of decreasing the energy con- sumption and increasing the human comfort. In modern buildings, some rooms need to be cooled, but some rooms need to be heated, even some rooms need not to be cooled or be heated, so the indoor units may be act as evaporators or condensers or be closed at the same time. Tra- ditional air-conditioning system can only satisfy all the room to be cooled or be heated at the same time. A new multi VRV(variable refrigerant volume) air-conditioning with heat recov- ery has been developed in this paper. This system consists of several indoor units and one out- door unit. Its capacity responds to the load of each room by using and inverter-aided compres- sor and electronic expansion valves that can automatically control the refrgerant flow for each indoor unit. The indoor unit in the heating room acts as condenser and the indoor unit in the cooling room acts as evaporator while the outdoor unit may act as evaporator or condenser. Be- cause both the condensing heat and evaporating heat are valuable in use, while the traditional systems only the condensing heat or evaporating heat can be used, the energy efficiency ratio of this system is increased greatly and the capacity and energy consumption of outdoor unit is de- creased remarkably. A typical system with two indoor units is analyzed based on the thermody- namics theory and computer simulation. Compared with the traditional air--conditioning sys- tem, this system which provides higher human comfort with lower energy consumption can be used in the residential buildings or commercial buildings and can run in the heat pump model, refrigeration model or heat recovery model throughout the year.

Abstract:In hot and humid tropical countries, the air-conditioning system has a high energy usage in commercial buildings. This study introduces a static balance duct design method for a temperature dependent variable air volume system. Ducts are looped together, which cause the air to self-balance and minimize the pressure loss across the duct network. The static balance duct network can easily identify the critical zone of highest pressure loss. This zone appears at the longest duct length from the air source and is always consistent for different load conditions. The air supplied to this critical zone is controlled by the zone temperature sensor, which directs feedback to the variable frequency drive fan of the air-handling unit. The rest of the variable air volume terminal units are zone temperature controlled. The duct looping design mitigates the problems in pressure variations and complements the temperature dependent control strategy. An open office case study is carried out to demonstrate the merit of the static balance duct design method. An actual installation was completed in a shopping mall. The recorded temperature readings verified that the static balance duct network and temperature dependent variable air volume air-conditioning system is operational and functional. Approximately 27% energy savings is achieved compared to the constant air volume system. Practical application: The static balance duct design method is a combination of equal friction duct design method and a loop duct network. This static balance duct network can identify the critical zone of highest pressure loss and this zone is always consistent. In this temperature-dependent variable air volume (TDVAV), the variable air volume (VAV) terminal unit at the critical zone is eliminated. The zone temperature sensor at the critical zone provides direct feedback to the variable frequency drive fan. All other terminal units are temperature dependent. The static balance TDVAV system enhances energy savings, improves the performance of VAV system and reduces the faults for VAV systems.
