Abstract:The production of Jinhua urban municipal solid wastes(MSW) is about 450 ton per day.The production increase with 15% ratio every year.Up to date,landfill method is used to treat the MSW,but the landfill site will be saturated after 2~3 years.The new landfill location is very difficult to choice.MSW incineration is a feasibility way of waste resourcable and volume reduction.To treat the Jinhua MSW,which has the feature of high water content,low heat value,auxiliary coal is added into circulating fluidized bed waste incineration boiler to improve heat value of mixed fuel and clean combustion.Combine with Zhejiang Bada Thermo Electricity Ltd.Company's equipment and experience mechanic,construction of MSW incineration plant is a feasible way of waste to energy.

Abstract:To save water resources and realize the sustainable utilization of water resources,a wastewater reclamation and reuse system was build in a residential district of Ji'nan.The treatment scale of the project is 5000 m3/d.The raw water is domestic sewage,and effluent is reused in washing toilet,greening,watering road and water-scenery.The CASS system was adopted by comparing several projects from the view of economics and techniques.Meanwhile,the design parameters of main constructions and equipments were introduced,and finally,the investment of project was analyzed.

Abstract:The authors analyzed the influence of waste management philosophy under sustainable development principle and development of key regulations and technical guidelines such as landfill directive and packaging directive of European Commission to the waste treatment method in developed countries,and discussed the development of some of kernel waste treatment technologies including waste incineration,mechanical-biological treatment,gasification and landfill.The authors suggested that China should actively develop eco-technologies in waste treatment and the central government should supply economic support and policy guidance to these technologies and formulate sustainable waste management strategy so as to change the present passive situation of end-of-pipe treatment.

Abstract:The actualities of disposal or treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Zhejiang Province were reviewed, and the imperfection and limitation of MSW disposal by a single way, such as landfill, incineration and composting, were summarized and discussed in the paper. As an advanced way, the integrative treatment is apt to actualize the principles of reutilization, minimization and innocuity of MSW. The system of integrative treatment based on recycling, composting, incineration and landfill of MSW was put forward. Finally, the key techniques of the realization of the integrative treatment were discussed.

Abstract:According to the current situations of Shenzhen city, an engineering project using biological treatment method was put forward to treat supernatant from night soil sludge and leachate from Yu Long Keng MSW landfill. Comparatively, UASB technology and active sludge technology was recommended to treat the combined wastewater of the supernatant and leachate, and high temperature composting technology was recommended to treat the residue from night soil sludge and sludge from biological treatment process.

Abstract:With rapid economic growth and massive urbanization, the types and quantities of municipal solid waste continue to increase, and many cities have already faced the situation of “garbage siege”. Municipal solid waste not only seriously pollutes soil, water and atmosphere, but also endangers human health, influences urban landscape and damages the image of the city. This paper reviews the current status and classification of municipal solid waste in China, and discusses the solid waste treatment technologies of landfilling, incineration, composting and pyrolysis. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of these treatment technologies applied to some developed countries are evaluated to inspire the innovation of new methods and ideas for solid waste treatment.

Abstract:Aimed at the fact that the rural domestic sewage is mainly composed of grey water in northern China,a mini-integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland(IVCW) was used to treat simulated rural grey water.The results indicate that the removal rates of COD and TN are 70% and 99% respectively.The degradation characteristics of various types of nitrogen were investigated by analyzing the samples from different depths.Also,because of limitations in carbon source shortage in the grey water and in oxygen supply,the effect of the nitrification and denitrification is insufficient.The effect of the two processes can be significantly improved through installation of aeration equipment and supply of a natural carbon source.
Analysis on the Effectiveness of the Input in Household Waste Classification of Residents—Taking S City in China As an Example

Abstract:S city in China has implemented a waste classification system and constructed a waste classification model with government-led market and public participation. In order to explore the effectiveness of waste classification input in S city, this paper conducts analyses from the points of view of the classification facility’s construction, environmental effectiveness, social acceptability and operation sustainability, based on interviews with and questionnaire surveys completed by related parties. The results show that the current waste classification facility system in S city is basically completed; high rates of both properties and residents comply with the waste classification system. S city has established a government-led waste classification pattern that depends on social participation. This pattern has been recognized and accepted by residents and is economically sustainable. At the same time, it is pointed out that the current marginal effectiveness of the waste classification input is showing a declining trend. Future investment should shift from investment in facilities and equipment to incentives for autonomous management by residents, and the corresponding evaluation of investment and effectiveness should also change accordingly. This requires the government to guide the refined management system.

Abstract:Influent and effluent quality of municipal wastewater treatment plants plays significant roles in selecting the appropriate treatment technologies and influencing the ecology of receiving water bodies. The quality of reclaimed water sources for water reuse can also be determined based on the influent wastewater and treated effluent information. Comprehensive analyses based on statistical data collected from 3340 Chinese municipal wastewater treatment plants were performed so as to better understand the effects of influent and effluent wastewater quality on the treatment performance, environmental concerns and resources utilization. Provincial characteristics of wastewater quality both in quantity and quality were identified, providing valuable information for the proposal of targeted management strategies in pollution control, water reuse and resources recovery. The influents of municipal wastewater treatment plants in north China had high wastewater pollutant loadings, but the effluent was of high quality due to the wide implementation of water reuse strategies in northern water scarcity regions. The potentials for organic and nutrient recovery from the influents were brought forward based on the mass balance. The importance of wastewater as a resource, and the adoption of advanced treatment and resources utilization in the long-term should be highlighted for sustainable water management.

Abstract:This paper discusses the RADARSAT-1 Antarctic Mapping Project (RAMP). RAMP is a collaboration between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to map Antarctica using the RADARSAT -1 synthetic aperture radar. The project was conducted in two parts. The first part, which had the data acquisition phase in 1997, resulted in the first high-resolution radar map of Antarctica. The second part, which occurred in 2000, remapped the continent below 80°S Latitude and is now using interferometric repeat-pass observations to compute glacier surface velocities. Project goals and objectives are reviewed here along with several science highlights. These highlights include observations of ice sheet margin change using both RAMP and historical data sets and the derivation of surface velocities on an East Antarctic outlet glacier using interferometric data collected in 2000.

Analysis of comprehensive environmental benefits in different municipal solid waste treatment scenarios based on dry-wet fraction separation through high-pressure extrusion pretreatment

Abstract:Nowadays, garbage classification has become a ‘new fashion’ in China. However, at the present stage, the limited separation of wet waste ( represented by kitchen waste) and dry waste (represented by combustible waste) resulted in low performance of subsequent biological treatment, as well as low energy recovery rate of waste incineration plant. These problems have become the bottleneck limiting the continuous promotion of garbage classification in China. Based on the previous study of high⁃pressure extrusion pre⁃treatment, the present study further comparatively analysed three different scenarios of ‘wet waste anaerobic digestion ⁃dry waste incineration⁃digestate landfilling’, ‘wet waste anaerobic digestion⁃dry waste incineration⁃ digestate land⁃utilization’ and ‘ mixed waste incineration’ . Specifically, their respective comprehensive environmental benefits were evaluated from aspects of greenhouse gas emission, net energy generation, pollutants releasing, resource recovery and waste reduction using the method of life cycle 环境科学学报环境科学学报 40卷 inventory analysis. This study further clarified the significance and effects of pre⁃treatment on municipal solid waste treatment in our country. The results showed that two scenarios using high⁃pressure extrusion could respectively reduce greenhouse gas emission by 218.84 and 264.08 kgCO2 ⁃Eq when dealing with one ton raw waste, which was far higher than that of scenario of raw waste incineration (169.68 kgCO2 ⁃Eq) . For the aspect of net energy generation amount, it was about 10% less in two dry⁃wet separation scenarios compared with the raw waste incineration scenario, however, fewer toxic pollutants were released in the former two scenarios as well. Furthermore, when one ton raw waste was disposed in scenario of ‘wet waste anaerobic digestion ⁃dry waste incineration⁃digestate land utilization’, it could not only recover about 160.7 kg fertilizer, but also achieve the entire reduction rate of 93.4%, which is a favourable scenario for waste situation in China.

Abstract:Cities worldwide are actively implementing waste classification policies to develop efficient waste management systems that address the growing challenges of waste disposal and promote sustainable development. However, selecting tailored waste classification solutions is challenging due to the intricate interrelationships within the system and the complex trade-offs between different management objectives. This study presents a comprehensive methodology that simulates the entire waste classification management system by integrating the stages of waste generation, source classification, and final disposal, all linked by waste quantities and properties. A multi-objective optimization model is employed to identify optimal technical pathways that balance economic, environmental, and energy objectives. This methodology was applied in Zhangjiagang, a medium-sized city in China, revealing that economically optimal solutions focusing on landfill and composting as disposal pathways could exacerbate environmental impacts, with indicators deteriorating by 23.1 %-419.1 % except for freshwater eutrophication potential. In contrast, a multi-objective optimization solution prioritizing incineration and anaerobic digestion achieves environmental and energy benefits valued at 18.7 USD/t, with a modest increase in economic costs of 5.7 USD/t compared to the base year. The unconstrained optimal scenarios achieve net negative environmental costs and recover 2.0 x 10(6) MJ of energy. The study recommends moderate and dynamically adjusted kitchen waste separation rates depending on the stage of implementation. Additionally, the findings reveal that the "lock-in" effects of mismatched disposal facilities can significantly escalate costs. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of systematic design and multi-objective optimization, offering a comprehensive methodology for cities aiming to enhance their waste classification strategies.

Abstract:China is facing serious water pollution problems. Only 15 % of the municipal wastewater is appropriately treated each year. A lack of funds is one major obstacle facing the construction of wastewater treatment plants. Conventional treatment technology such as activated sludge process has both relatively high capital and operational costs. An alternative to this dilemma is to develop and apply the technologies with lower costs or better performance. This paper reviewed the appropriate technologies for municipal wastewater treatment in China. Based on both research and engineering practice, four technologies, including natural purification systems, highly efficient anaerobic processes, advanced bio-film reactors and membrane bioreactors were discussed in detail.

Abstract:China has been experiencing fast economic development in recent decades at the cost of serious environmental deterioration. Wastewater discharge, especially municipal wastewater discharge, and non-point pollution sources are becoming the major water pollution source and research focus. Great efforts have been made on water pollution control and a number of renovated technologies and processes for municipal wastewater treatment and reclamation as well as non-point pollution control have been developed and applied in China. This paper discusses the development and application of the appropriate technologies, including natural treatment systems, anaerobic biological treatment, biofilm reactors and wastewater reclamation technologies, for water pollution control in the country.

Abstract:China has endured the increasing generation of municipal solid waste; hence, environmental analysis of current waste management systems is of crucial importance. This article presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment of three waste treatment technologies practiced in Hangzhou, China: landfill with and without energy recovery, and incineration with waste-to-energy. Adopting region-specific data, the study covers various environmental impacts, such as global warming, acidification, nutrient enrichment, photochemical ozone formation, human toxicity and ecotoxicity. The results show that energy recovery poses a positive effect in environmental savings. Environmental impacts decrease significantly in landfill with the utilization of biogas owing to combined effects by emission reduction and electricity generation. Incineration is preferable to landfill, but toxicity-related impacts also need to be improved. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis shows that the benefit of carbon sequestration will noticeably decrease global warming potential of both landfill scenarios. Gas collection efficiency is also a key parameter influencing the performance of landfill. Based on the results, improvement methods are proposed. Energy recovery is recommended both in landfill and incineration. For landfill, gas collection systems should be upgraded effectively; for incineration, great efforts should be made to reduce heavy metals and dioxin emissions.

Abstract:In this paper,in-depth analysis into the vital demand of China and the international research advances in the field of municipal wastewater reclamation and reuse is provided;the fundamental features of related researches(i.e.,mechanism elucidation at microscopic level,process security,technological integration,extension to ecological system) are revealed;the critical scientific problems to be addressed(i.e.contaminant elimination/transformation,chemical-to-energy conversion,water reuse-associated ecological risks control)are summarized;Lastly,four future directions to promote the sustainable development of urban water system in China are proposed,namely:(1) mechanisms of mass and energy conversion during wastewater reclamation and reuse;(2) principles for ecological storage and multi-scale recycling of reclaimed water;(3)methodologies for water security assessment and ecological risks control in urban water system;(4) theories for developing reclaimed water +-based sustainable urban water system.
