Abstract:The tangential fretting wear behavior of titanium alloy ball and bone cement was experimentally investigated using a ball-on-flat specimen arrangement in dry and 25% fetal calf serum medium to test their fretting characteristics. The S-3000N scanning electron microscope was used to observe the wear track morphology and analyze wear mechanism. The results show that the fretting regime is transformed from the partial slip regime into the mixed fretting regime with the increasing of fretting amplitudes under the same contact load. With the increasing of contact load and fixed fretting amplitude, adhesions are more likely to occur between the contact surfaces of the specimen.Compared to dry friction, boundary of the partial slip regime shifts in the direction of larger displacement, and the mixed regime shrinks in calf serum medium. There are two stages for friction coefficient curve in the mixed fretting regime,i.e.increase and stable stage in which friction coefficient is higher than that in the partial slip regime. The stable friction coefficient tends to decrease with the increase of contact load, while it increases with fretting amplitudes increase. The wear volume of bone cement samples in the calf serum medium is larger than that in the air and increases with the contact load increase. In calf serum medium, the wear mechanism of fretting is mainly adhesive wear, fatigue wear and the weakening effect of solution molecules on the bone cement matrix under stress.
