Abstract:Surface roughness is an important parameter to reflect the micro-geometry in machine process, and also an important part of modern precise measurement technique. Contact measurement and noncontact measurement was summarized in this paper, and the advantages and disadvantages are disucssed. Some ideas about it's trend are given in the end.

Abstract:To simulate the roughness surface is the pre-condition that builds the roughness model and simulates the interaction of two contacted surface. A method based on the time-series model, the low-pass digital filter method and Johnson Transform System was presented. To utilized this method, the Gaussian distribution surfaces and the Non-Gaussian distribution surface which have different ACF were generated, then the method of simulating synthetic surfaces that have the closed-form of the real surfaces were discussed and tried. The error in the processes was analyzed. The results show the method can generate the isotropy and anisotropy surfaces based on different ACF quickly and efficiently; under the certain condition, the error between the statistic parameters of the simulating surface and the expectation is tiny, but the length of correlation becomes larger, the error can not be ignored.

Abstract:An algorithm of surface analysis was improved based on uniform triangulation of NURBS surface. The uniform triangulation algorithm of trimmed surface was realized using grid growing method. The field value computation of reflection line and highlight line and the construction of isoline were improved, which made the geometric meaning of field value more intuitionistic and the computation of field value for multiple parallel line light source more convenient. The application in reverse engineering software shows that the algorithm is rapid and stable, and the isoline can reflect the quality of surface.

Abstract:A novel modeling method based on grey system theory is put forward in this paper. The primary sampling data of measured surface need not obey the typical distributions as usual, and therefore the surface comprehensive topography with less data can also be separated without losing primary information. The practical measurement for a 3-D component and 2-D roughness template show the method effective for separating the surface comprehensive topography errors, and the errors separated are well consistent with the standard Gaussian method which is widely used currently.

Abstract:Limited by the factors such as dynamic vibrations, cutting heat, and the use of coolant, it is difficult to measure or evaluate the surface quality in real time. Geometry simulation of the surface topography became the main method used in engineering to estimate and control the quality of the surface machining. This paper proposed a new method for geometry simulation and evaluation of a milled surface. Allowing for the coherency in geometric variations management process, the proposed method is developed based on the skin model of a workpiece. To make the simulated surface topography more realistic, the effects of locating errors, spindle errors, geometrical errors of the machine tool, and cutting tool deflections are included. And a new method is adopted to evaluate the milled surface, in which the roughness of the surface is characterized by the modal coefficients, instead of the R-a, R-z, and R-q values. At the end of this paper, measurements and cutting tests are carried out to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:Mathematical modelling of surface roughness is of significant interest for a variety of modern applications, including, but not limited to, tribology and optics. The most popular approaches to modelling rough surfaces are reviewed and critically examined. By providing counterexamples, it is shown that approaches based solely on the use of the fractal geometry or power spectral density have many drawbacks. It is recommended to avoid these approaches. It is argued that the surfaces that cannot be distinguished from the original rough surfaces can be synthesised by employing the concept of the representative elementary pattern of roughness (REPR), i.e., the smallest interval (or area) of a rough surface that statistically represents the whole surface. The REPR may be extracted from surface measurement data by the use of the "moving window" technique in combination with the Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic.

Abstract:A stochastic method is introduced for geometric modeling aerosol surface roughness with random field and discrete differential geometry theory. Optical scattering properties are computed for randomly oriented spheroidal particles with uniformly random surface roughness. Invariant imbedding T-Matrix and geometric optics method are applied to compute light scattering properties of aerosol particles covered from Rayleigh to geometric optics region. We simulatied scattering phase matrix of model particles, better performace is obtained than smooth particles. We aslo introduce introduce entropy and relative entropy as measures to distinguish the optical scattering similarities between different particles.

Abstract:Two-dimensional second-order structure functions (2DSSFs) have been widely used to investigate the roughness characteristics of gravel surfaces. Because of the complex patterns of the 2DSSFs, the interpretation of the 2DSSFs results remains challenging, and the explanations are mostly qualitative. Recently, a novel quantitative method for the description of the roughness of gravel-beds was proposed by Qin et al. (J Hydraul Res 57:90-106, 2019), which determines the statistical significance of structure functions based on Monte Carlo simulations. This new method is evaluated by four artificially prepared gravel surfaces to test the capability of the method in quantitatively differentiating predefined gravel structures. The four surfaces were prepared according to dissimilar arrangements of gravels and tried to represent gravel structures of different scales. The results successfully differentiated the roughness characteristics of the four surfaces and demonstrated the promising capability of the new method.

Abstract:Purpose Micro-texture is processed on the surface to reduce the friction of the contact surface, and its application is more and more extensive. The purpose of this paper is to create a texture function model to study the influence of surface parameters on the accuracy of the simulated surface so that it can more accurately reflect the characteristics of the real micro-textured surface. Design/methodology/approach The microstructure function model of rough surfaces is established based on fractal geometry and polar coordinate theory. The offset angle θ is introduced into the fractal geometry function to make the surface asperity normal perpendicular to the tangent of the surface. The 2D and 3D contour surfaces of the surface groove texture are analyzed by MATLAB simulation. The effects of fractal parameters (D and G) and texture parameter h on the curvature of the surface micro-texture model were studied. Findings This paper more accurately characterizes the textured 3D curved surface, especially the surface curvature. The scale coefficient G significantly affects curvature, and the influence of fractal dimension D and texture parameters on curvature can be ignored. Originality/value The micro-texture model of the rough surface was successfully established, and the range of fractal parameters was determined. Multi-Scale Based Unified Modeling And Simulation Of Part Surface Topography

Abstract:This paper concentrates on the multi-scale based unified modeling method of part surface topography. First of all, a three-dimensional multi-fractal characteristic function is proposed, which can be used to describe the micro-topography of a three-dimensional multi-fractal rough surface. The altitude variation of surface topography can be regarded as a series of stochastic signals, so the multi-scale information can be extracted by wavelet analysis and decomposed into four scales. The extracted multi-scale redundant information is optimized into multi-resolution information. Then, a method is proposed to evaluate the consistency of the multi-scale information, and the information transmission model of multi-scale part surface is also built. Finally, the method of multi-scale modeling is verified to be feasible by multi-performance simulation of the gem processing machine tool.

Abstract:In order to investigate the fractal characterization, namely the statistically self-affine of the engineering surfaces in different scale, two methods, the random-mid-displacements method and Weierstrass-Mandelbrot function method, are employed to simulate the profiles and 3D topography of rough surfaces. The power spectra of the surface profile is analyzed and the relationship of fractal dimension and its power spectra is built. From the graph of the power spectrum, the power spectrum of single fractal surface only has one segment, but the power spectrum of bifractal surface has two distinct segments, the different fractal dimensions are shown on the spectra graph. It is verified by calculation that fractal dimensions of the generated surfaces are in good agreement with the specified values. To compare with the traditional statistic parameters, the fractal dimensions and characteristic scale are scale independence to some extent. According to statistics, the two generated surfaces both have the character of the Gauss distribution. The scale independence of fractal characterization and statistical properties of the generated surfaces are discussed, through which it is concluded that a sophisticated description of rough surfaces should include both fractal and statistic features.
A Novel Method of Designing Random Rough Surface Considering Its Contact Force–Deformation Characteristic Requirement

Abstract:The height probability distribution (HPD) of random rough surface topography has significant effect on its contact behaviors. In this paper, an optimization model to calculate the optimal HPD of random rough surface topography to make its contact force-deformation characteristic satisfy the given target force-deformation characteristic was established. In the solution to calculate the optimal HPD, using Bezier interpolation curve to represent the curve of HPD function and using the positions of the control points of the Bezier interpolation curve as optimization variables were proposed. The solution was validated by numerical simulations implemented using matlab. The effect of the number of control points on the minimum objective function value was investigated. Through analyzing the obtained result, we found the most appropriate number of the control points is 35. Comparison with the method using height parameters as optimization variables in literature was implemented. It was found that the proposed method is applicable to broader types of contact force-deformation characteristic requirements than the method using height parameters as optimization variables.

Abstract:A system of atomic force microscope applied to nanometer scale surface roughness measuring is introduced, and the emphasis is laid on software implementation method. The experiment results show that the system can be well used to measure 1-D surface roughness of a line in random horizontal or vertical direction and the surface roughness of random area. The three dimensional spatial measuring resolution of surface roughness has reached nanometer scale, which will satisfy the need of nanometer scale surface topography research very well.

Abstract:The simulated rough surface with desired parameters is widely used as an input for the numerical simulation of tribological behavior such as the asperity contact, lubrication, and wear. In this study, a simulation method for generating non-Gaussian rough surfaces with desired autocorrelation function (ACF) and spatial statistical parameters, including skewness (Ssk) and kurtosis (Sku), was developed by combining the fast Fourier transform (FFT), translation process theory, and Johnson translator system. The proposed method was verified by several numerical examples and proved to be faster and more accurate than the previous methods used for the simulation of non-Gaussian rough surfaces. It is convenient to simulate the non-Gaussian rough surfaces with various types of ACFs and large autocorrelation lengths. The significance of this study is to provide an efficient and accurate method of non-Gaussian rough surfaces generation to numerically simulate the tribological behavior with desired rough surface parameters.

Abstract:Glossiness is an optical index representing the capacity of a surface to reflect light, which is vital criteria for components in need of esthetic appearance. To achieve the stringent glossiness requirement, sanding and polishing for smooth surface generation become the necessary material removal method. However, the intrinsic correlation of surface roughness and glossiness is still not clear. Small roughness value does not always guarantee perfect glossiness, and high surface glossiness does not always require extreme surface roughness perfection. In this paper, the surface topography features and glossiness conditions are analyzed for sanded and polished surfaces. And the surface glossiness is modeled and simulated for surfaces generated with non-Gaussian topography features manufactured by sanding and polishing. Finally, the critical surface topography parameters are identified to establish the correlation with the surface glossiness.

Abstract:According to random process theory, the existing autocorrelation function (ACF) expression that characterizes the spatial features of the shot peening (SP) surface topography makes it difficult to constrain the 3D roughness spatial parameters defined in ISO 25178, which restricts the correlation studies between surface topography and service performance. This paper introduces a new ACF expression for reconstructing the SP surface topography with specified spatial parameters. Based on the new expression, a numerical simulation method for stratified surface topography applicable to SP after finishing is introduced. The main idea is to perform feature extraction and feature modeling on the measured surface with the help of machine learning. The new method is applied to the numerical simulation of the SP and grinding-shot peening (Gr-SP) surface topography with a coverage of 200%. The relative error in height distribution and spatial parameters between the measured and simulated surface topography are less than 5%. The new method of height distribution and spatial parameters active design is provided to study the correlation between surface topography and service performance of shot peening parts.

Assessment on Surface Roughness Models Based on Semantics and Profile Characteristics Matching

Abstract:As an important terrain factor,surface roughness calculated by digital elevation models(DEM) is directly used in geoscience models such as soil erosion models,surface photo-thermal simulation and so on.But there has been no generally accepted definition of surface roughness until now.Various types and similar concepts of surface roughness may cause difficulty for selecting a suitable surface roughness model.In this paper,we present a new algorithm for assessing surface roughness models based on semantics and profile characteristics.Some contrast experiments are presented by choosing hybrid landform types as sample areas,using DEM produced by traditional topographic map digitizing and LiDAR technology.Main conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) The method we presented in this paper can accurately express the local variation of terrain profiles suitable for assessing surface roughness models.(2) Both triangular boundary effect of TIN model generated by traditional contour based DEM production and surface random noise in DEM generated by LiDAR technology based DEM production influence the calculation of surface roughness.DEM data should firstly be filtered and noise reduced beforehand.(3) An SAR model is insensitive to the flat relief.It is not suitable for areas of plain and valley plain dominated areas.Roughness models based on vector calculus are accurate in expressing ridge and valley lines and straight slope areas which is not effectively described by SAR models.SDev model is more suitable for application in fine scale DEM.Slope based standard deviation model can be applied to most types of terrain,which is sensitive to four semantic rules.But SDsp model is more sensitive to break of slope.Curvature based standard deviation models are not advantageous in surface roughness description except for their high sensitivity in surface roughness of flat relief areas.

Abstract:Scattering from a rough surface has been widely used. In recent years, fractal geometry has been successfully applied to investigate the interaction between a fractal rough surface and a wave. In this paper, we discuss the reconstruction of a fractal rough surface with periodic boundary conditions. To reconstruct the fractal rough surface accurately, the fractal dimension is inverted directly. At the same time, an efficient direct searching method is given to avoid the difficulty of calculating the derivative of the minimal target function. The numerical simulations show that this method has high convergence speed and high precision.
