Abstract:West and East are two branches of human culture, two civilizations, two ways of life. West and East were perceived as "opposite" sides of the world, and this statement applied not only to geography, but also to mentality and worldview. The article discusses the features of Eastern and Western philosophy through the prism of the great ideas of Confucius and Plato, thinkers who had a huge impact on the further development of both cultures and value systems. The comparison in the article is based on metaphysical concepts and the value orientations that follow from them, the attitude to knowledge and to a person, as well as the way of thinking. In the context of metaphysics, the category of philanthropy, which is significant for Confucianism – ren, is considered in comparison with the theory of Plato's ideas, the differences are demonstrated, which later gave different vectors for the development of European and Chinese thought. These differences gave rise to dissimilarity of value concepts, and, as a result, a different understanding of knowledge. As a separate position for comparison, the concept of "aspiration" is taken as the desire for individuality in Western philosophy as opposed to the desire for harmony in Chinese. The reasons leading to such a difference are rooted not only in the personality of the thinkers, but also in a special cultural background and geographical environment. The analytical Western mind of the individual is opposed to the Chinese public consciousness, where the priority is harmony in relations between people at different levels. The author shows some basic philosophical attitudes important for both civilizations and the difference in the further directions of development of the two cultures.

Abstract:This article compares and analyzes the development history, ideological culture, and philosophical concepts of traditional paintings, landscape paintings, and still life paintings in the East and the West. The essence of painting is a form of visual consciousness. There is a unique way of processing and expressing spatial consciousness in different images, regions, and humanistic spirits of Eastern and Western paintings. The difference in spatial awareness promotes mutual learning, guidance, and promotion between the Chinese and Western art which have different historical backgrounds, aesthetic concepts, and national customs. Therefore, different ways of paintings would also have differences in the spatial consciousness of the paintings.

Abstract:Chinese painting is full of poetic, expressive power and rhythm, which is different from Western painting and could be unique in global art history and research. The poetic, expressive power and rhythm in Chinese painting have been unique in the global art world. Therefore, it should be evaluated correctly, thoroughly and accurately but not be included only as an example in the dominant Western art world. Doing comparisons between Chinese painting and Western painting is supposed to compare them with one another equally. Learning about the Chinese language and culture is also quite significant when studying Chinese painting to get to know it deeply enough and profoundly.

Abstract:Abstract. In 17–18th century, the spread of the image of the Qing Imperial Garden witnessed the cross-cultural exchanges and promoted the development of English Landscape Garden style. The reciprocal ‘far away foreign land’ between Chinese and British cultures and the influence of historical context had caused the discrepant view of European on Chinese gardens. This project focuses on the differences of cultural heritage values found in the two kinds of gardens: from the design of space and structure, poems and paintings representing designers' concepts, humanities factors, design conception, gardening elements and etc. Which hopes to fill up the gaps of relevant studies and stress the importance of documentation for gardens between the East and West. There are three aspects to illustrate the inner differences under the surface similarities between the two kinds of gardens. Firstly, the distortion and discontinuity through out the introduction and translation.This research attempts to cross-examine such an argument through an investigation into the journey to the West by the carrier of Chinese Imperial garden ideas. Then the meaning of ‘views of nature’ in the English Landscape Garden was inconsistent with the Chinese concept of ‘natural state of the world’. Thirdly, the differences of historical background, culture and values between the Qing Imperial Garden and the English Landscape Garden. All in all, this research could well invite a more factually-based understanding of the Sino-English architectural interactions as well as the Chinese contributions to the world architecture.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the differences and commonalities between Chinese literature and Western literature. First of all, the characteristics of the two are compared from three aspects, namely, presentation methods, thematic contents and literary forms. Chinese literature focuses on mood, ambiguity, and emphasizes the natural flow of emotions; while Western literature attaches importance to structure, logic, and pursues innovation in form. In terms of thematic content, Chinese literature tends to express personal emotions and expresses the harmony between human beings and nature and society; while Western literature focuses on the conflict between individuals and society and emphasizes freedom, equality and human rights. In terms of literary forms, Chinese literature coexists in various forms such as poetry, prose and novels, while Western literature takes novels, dramas and poems as its main forms. Secondly, this study explores the reasons for the differences between the two in terms of cultural background, writers' creative concepts and readers' acceptance. Chinese literature is deeply influenced by traditional cultural ideas such as Confucianism and Taoism, emphasizing moral education and philosophy of life; while Western literature is influenced by ancient Greek and Roman myths as well as religious beliefs such as Christianity, focusing on the inner world of man and exploring human nature. In terms of writers' creative concepts, Chinese writers tend to focus on social harmony from the perspective of traditional morality and ethics, while Western writers advocate the liberation of individuality and the pursuit of the realization of personal values. In terms of readers' acceptance, Chinese literature focuses on aesthetic experience and emotional resonance, while Western literature pays more attention to logical reasoning and thinking. The comparative study of Chinese literature and Western literature can help us better understand the diversity of world literature and enrich our concepts of literary aesthetics and creation. At the same time, by learning from the excellent achievements of Western literature, we can promote the innovation and development of Chinese literature.

Abstract:Toponym is rich in cultural connotations, which can help human beings understand the economy, culture, geography, religion of a certain region and a certain stage. With the increasing intercultural communication, cultural exchange has been extended to people's work and life and the significance and influence of toponym in cross-cultural communication has been gradually highlighted. This paper compares the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western place name from three aspects. Due to the unity of human thought, there are similarities between Chinese and Western place names. But because of the great cultural differences between China and the West, there are also great differences in the place names. Chinese place name is more deliberate and rigorous while western people treat place name only as an accusative symbol and the naming of it is more casual and flexible. Therefore, the study of place name can provide insight into the characteristics of Chinese and Western cultures which is important for the promotion of cultural exchange. The article also considers the prospect of using information computer technologies for processing wide layers of toponymic material.

Abstract:Chamber music attracts the audience with its wide range, diverse sounds, and rich expressiveness. Even if it is still the same chamber music, the influence of geography, ethnicity, and culture, styles and varieties of Chinese and Western chamber music are widely different. By comparing pieces of Chinese chamber music with the Western chamber music, one can find out that Chinese chamber music focuses on the expression of the artistic concept through the melody, while the Western chamber music gives more attention to logic and festive genres. Within the Chinese musical aesthetics, influenced by Laozi’s Tao Te Ching, there’s an idea that «music has in it neither grief nor joy», saying that music itself is not emotional, and is objective, it is just an incentive and an instrument of emotions. In Western countries, the art of music gives attention to the technique, and considers music as a real and important substance, and tends to a more «autonomous» point of view. The authors of this research give special attention to the analysis of aesthetic differences between Chinese and Western music, as well as creative differences caused by the influence of aesthetic differences. In view of these facts the authors formulate the conclusion that the music of China and the West should be compared based on the ideas about aesthetics and their detailed analysis. The authors consider the typical features and characteristics of the music aesthetics of the West and China, their diversity and influence on the creative work in chamber music, hold a comparative research, and offer new models and directions of development. The main theme of traditional Chinese chamber music is poetry, and the arrangement is more free, and focuses on conveying the artistic idea. The Western chamber music has a strict creative routine, and gives more attention to the characteristics of music itself.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to study the temple architecture of China and Western Europe during the Middle Ages in order to build a table of affinities and differences. Object of research: religious buildings of China and Western Europe of the Middle Ages. Subject of research: similarities and differences of architectural structures of two religions. The article describes that one of the factors in the development of China's unique culture was the country's long-term territorial isolation from the world, which provided an opportunity for original development. Today, taking into account globalization in the socio-cultural life of society, there is a problem of self-identification of polar world cultures, in order to preserve the idea of the world structure of individual nations. It is spiritual and philosophical life that fundamentally affects the architectural structure of temple complexes, changing and developing it according to religious canons. For this purpose, an in-depth analysis of the differences in temple architecture was made on the example of a separate time period – the Middle Ages, in order to identify fundamental differences in culture, self-identification, and theoretical and practical approaches to the formation of temple complexes. All distinctions and affinities were systematized according to criteria and formed into a table. The conclusions state that the main differences between the medieval temple architecture of China and Western Europe lie in the opposite worldview through the prism of culture and attitude to the surrounding environment. It is thanks to these moments that the structural diversity of the architecture of the temples is reflected. Based on this, the conclusion table 1 was built, in which the evaluation according to various criteria is demonstrated. Due to China's isolation from world architectural trends and adherence to its own philosophical ideas, its architecture has become original and unique. And the system of tectonic structures is a unique and authentic manifestation of the spirit of Chinese natural philosophy. The conclusions of this study can be used in the study of the degree of stylistic globalization in modern Chinese architecture.

Abstract:Many cities in the world chose to develop low carbon city in response to climate change,environmental degradation and energy shortage,and these cities started with development of low city plans.Despite many similarities among the low carbon city plans,distinct features can be identified about the low carbon city plans in China as compared to those in developed countries.The differences are shown mainly in motivations,objectives,activities,and measures and policy instruments for implementation.The Western cities are motivated by their legal obligation for climate mitigation under the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol,and by their visions for future non-fossil energy basis as well as preparation for future economic competitiveness.But the Chinese cities aim at economic growth with greater energy efficiency.Thus,the former are more proactive in taking actions and more ambitious in setting target for carbon reduction,while the latter more cautious in fearing of the consequences of performance evaluation against their targets.While Western cities focus on buildings,transport,and waste management,Chinese low carbon city plan are much more comprehensive,especially focusing on industrial sectors,reflecting the differences in functions of the governments between China and the West.Market-based policy tools are used more frequently in implementation of the low carbon city plans in the West,as distinct contrast to those in China where administrative measures and government-sponsored programs and projects are more often employed.

Abstract:While China and the USA differ in many ways, suburbanization and rapid increase in car dependence in China seem to result in certain urban issues that are also found in US cities. For instance, recent urban development in China has departed significantly from the traditional high-density, pedestrian-and cyclist-oriented urban form that used to characterize Chinese cities. As the market economy unfolds in China, market forces seem to play a more significant role in suburban development in Chinese cities, leading to issues like longer commute time and distance, as well as worsening jobs-housing balance, traffic congestion, and air pollution. This article reflects on the similarities and differences in the urban issues of cities in China and the USA. It discusses urban issues like high-density suburbanization, jobs-housing balance, car dependence, and the role of gender and household structure. It suggests that the sustainability implications of the car-oriented suburbanization in urban China call for serious attention.

Abstract:The current review aims to investigate the differences between the views of face in China and Western countries in the theoretical and practical aspects and demonstrate external manifestations of cross-cultural conflict. The study started by bringing in theories about face, involved comparing views from different researchers, and listed out some specific daily activities to illustrate how the face issue works in diverse countries. Significant differences were discovered in the views of face in various cultures, and the gap was found to be more obvious in the activities in peoples daily lives than in theories, which leads people to treat things and act differently. Although more research is needed to identify the differences in nature and birth of theories, findings suggest a need to pay attention to these differences and how to use them to show respect for people from China or other Western countries in intercultural communication.
