Abstract:The rotational dynamics of several chemically simple organic functional groups covalently attached to ordered mesoporous silica (OTVIS) are reported using solid-state H-2 NMR spectroscopy. Hexamethyldisilazane-treated OMS samples show that resulting trimethylsilyl groups rapidly rotate on the OMS surfaces, even at low temperatures. However, subtle differences are observed between TMS groups on MCM-41 versus SBA-15 Surfaces, possibly due to the presence of micropores in SBA-15. Different secondary amines display different dynamic behaviors, which appear largely dependent oil whether the amine can engage in hydrogen bonding with residual surface silanols. The N-methylamine groups exhibit dynamic behavior that is dependent upon loading. At low loadings a spectrum consistent with a methyl rotor is observed, and at higher loadings a fast rotation about the methyl group 3-fold axis and additional motion that leads to further narrowing of the line shape is observed. The N-benzylamine line shape is quite complex, qualitatively consistent with a 180 degrees pi-flip and an additional motion. In contrast, the piperazine groups are rigid oil the NMR time scale. This is attributed to the inability of the secondary amine of the piperazine group to hydrogen bond with surface silanols due to conformational constraints.

Abstract:Variations in the structure and acidity properties of HZSM‐5 zeolites with reduction in crystal sizes down to nanoscale (less than 100 nm) have been investigated by XRD, TEM and solid‐state NMR with a system capable of in situ sample pretreatment. As evidenced by a combination of 27 Al MAS NMR, 29 Si MAS, CP/MAS NMR and 1 H MAS NMR techniques, the downsize of the zeolite crystal leads to an obvious line broadening of the 27 Al, 29 Si MAS NMR spectrum, an increasing of the silanol concentration on the external surface, and a pronounced alteration of the acidity distribution between the external and internal surfaces of the zeolite. In a HZSM‐5 zeolite with an average size at about 70 nm, the nonacidic hydroxyl groups (silanols) are about 14% with respect to the total amount of Si, while only 4% of such hydroxyl groups exist in the same kind of zeolite at 1000 nm crystal size. The result of 1 H MAS NMR obtained using Fluorinert ® FC‐43 (perfluorotributyl amine) as a probe molecule demonstrates that most of the silanols are located on the external surface of the zeolite. Moreover, the concentration of Brønsted acid sites on the external surface of the nano‐structured zeolite appears to be distinctly higher than that of the microsized zeolite.

Abstract:Mesoporous molecular sieves SBA-15, and MAS-7 and MTS-9 synthesized from zeolite primary structure units, are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Direct observation of the micropores within these mesoporous materials via HRTEM is presented. And nanorange ordered microporosity is found for the first time within the pore walls of MAS-7 and MTS-9, which might be the key to the high hydrothermal stability of the mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Three different kinds of silanols, which include isolated silanol, silanol I (with the hydroxyl proton bonded to an oxygen atom in the adjacent layer) and silanol II (with the hydroxyl proton bonded to the non-bridging oxygen at the same silicon atom), are generated during the hydration process of SKS-6 (delta-Na2Si2O5). 1H-1H nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy reveals that the proton of silanol I has an effective chemical exchange or spin diffusion with the proton of hydrogen-bonded water, while the proton of silanol II is likely far away from the other proton-containing species. 29Si magic angle spinning, 1H-->29Si CP/MAS NMR and 1H-29Si phase-modulated Lee-Goldburg decoupled correlation experiments demonstrate that the local environments of the silicon sites in the final hydrated sample are mainly composed of Q2 [(SiO)2Si(OH)O(-)Na+], Q3 [(SiO)3Si(OH) and (SiO)3SiO(-)Na+] and Q4 [Si(OSi)4] groups.

Abstract:High-resolution 17O multiple-quantum MAS (MQMAS) NMR spectra have been obtained for zeolite HY in order to study its local structure and Brønsted acidity. The 17O NMR signals due to all the different oxygen environments have been observed in one single experiment, including the readily-resolved signals arising from the two types of oxygen atoms of the zeolite framework (Si–O–Al and Si–O–Si), and oxygen atoms directly bound to Brønsted acid sites (Si–O(H)–Al). The 17O NMR parameters such as the isotropic chemical shift (δCS) and quadrupolar coupling parameters (quadrupolar coupling constant, QCC and asymmetry parameter, η) for these oxygen species have been extracted and found to be consistent with the results from previous NMR measurements. The NMR parameters of the framework sites reveal a greater distribution of T–O–T′ bond angles over those typically observed in hydrated zeolites.
In Situ High-pressure NMR Observations of Formation of Methane Hydrate in the Mesochannels of SBA-15

Abstract:A home-made high pressure apparatus and a static NMR cell capable of stand-ing high pressure up to 10 MPa were employed to study the formation of methane hy-drate in SBA-15 with uniform pore size and ordered hexagonal structure.It is found that,under static condition,the introductive period for methane hydrate formation in the mesochannels of SBA-15 is shorter than that for the formation of bulk methane hy-drate,suggesting that SBA-15 can promote the formation of methane hydrate.In situ high-pressure1H and13C NMR studies show that at certain pressure,even in the pres-ence of excess methane,not all the water molecules confined in the mesochannels of SBA-15 can be completely utilized to form methane hydrate.

Abstract:Mesopore-modified ZSM-5 zeolites with hierarchical porous structures (Meso-ZSM-5) have been synthesized by using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide and starch as cotemplates. One- and two-dimensional Xe-129 NMR spectroscopy has been employed to study the porosity under the continuous flow of laser-hyperpolarized xenon gas. Besides the micropores, the mesoporous domains in Meso-ZSM-5 zeolites are directly observed by variable-temperature experiments. Combining with nitrogen adsorption, the influence of the Si/Al ratios on the mesopores in Meso-ZSM-5 is also investigated. The exchange of Xe atoms in different types of pores is very fast at ambient temperature. Two-dimensional exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) is used for the first time to monitor such an exchange process, and the results indicate that even at very low temperature Xe atoms still undergo much faster exchange between mesopores and micropores in Meso-ZSM-5 than in the mechanical mixture of conventional ZSM-5 and mesoporous silica. The results demonstrate that these hierarchical pores may have good connected networks that facilitate xenon diffusion and exchange. Also, this may give some indications for other molecules adsorption and diffusion in mesoporous zeolites especially in the process of catalysis.
Synthesis and properties of mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 from extreme dense system with auxiliary alkanes

Abstract:In the extreme dense system of H 2O/Si��8.0, the influences of auxiliary alkanes - n-hexane, n-heptane, i-octane and n-octadecane to the synthesise of mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 have been studied. The experiments demonstrated that auxiliary alkanes possessed promoting function for preparing molecular sieve MCM-41 with more than 4nm pore diameter in system with very low H 2O synthesized samples have been charaterized by XRD, SEM and N 2 isothermal adsorption. These demonstrated that the products possessed typical properties of MCM-41 molecular sieve.

Abstract:The accessibility and acidity of HZSM-35 zeolite were studied by high-resolution solid-state MAS NMR spectroscopy after adsorption of deuterated pyridine or trimethylphosphine as probe molecules. The results showed that the probe molecules could enter both the ten-membered ring (10-MR) channels and eight-membered ring (8-MR) cavities. However, the diffusion into the 8-MR cavities was very slow and it took a long time to reach the adsorption equilibrium at 300 degrees C. After adsorption of deuterated pyridine, H-1 MAS NMR spectra showed that there were two types of Bronsted acidic sites with different strength in both the 10-MR channels and 8-MR cavities. After adsorption of trimethylphosphine, the P-31 MAS NMR spectra indicated that there were Lewis acidic sites in HZSM-35 zeolite, but their strength and amount were less than the Bronsted acidic sites.

Abstract:The concentration, acid strength and thermal stability of the Bronsted- and Lewis-acid sites in the proton form of the mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 were monitored by IR spectroscopy as function of the Al content. The results were compared with those for zeolite H+-ZSM-5 with the same elemental composition. The spectra of hydroxy groups in purely siliceous [Si]-MCM-41 and H+-[Si, Al]-MCM-41 contain a single band at 3740 cm(-1), assigned to the Si-OH groups, and are independent of the Al content. Sorption of ammonia or pyridine generates bands from the ammonium and pyridinium ions. The concentrations of both Bronsted- and Lewis-acid sites in H+-[Si, Al]-MCM-41 are lower than the concentration of four-coordinate aluminium. The Bronsted sites in H+-MCM-41 are more prone to dehydroxylation than those in zeolite H+-ZSM-5, and the effect increases with the Al content. The acid strength of the Bronsted sites in H+-MCM-41 is independent of the Al content and much lower than in zeolite H+-ZSM-5.

Abstract:Silica samples condensed at acidic, neutral and alkaline media in the presence of various inorganic anions have been carefully investigated by 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results show that SO42- and CO32- could effectively improve the degree of silica condensation under neutral and alkaline media. Accordingly, for example, it is designable to synthesize hydrothermally stable and well ordered hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15 with very high degree of silica condensation in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species under neutral condition. As we expected, hexagonal mesoporous silica materials in the presence of sulfate (SBA-15-S) and carbonate species (SBA-15-U) show high degree of silica condensation, giving Q4/Q3 ratios at 6.3 and 4.3, which are much higher than that of conventional SBA-15 (Q4/(Q3+Q2) ratio at 1.8) synthesized in the absence of sulfate and carbonate species. Very interestingly, hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15-S and SBA-15-U shows very high hydrothermal stability, compared with SBA-15. For example, after being treated in 100% steaming at 780°C for 3h, SBA-15-S still remains its mesostructure. In constrast, SBA-15 loses most of the mesostructure. Furthermore, heteroatoms-substituted mesoporous materials such as aluminosilicate (Al-SBA-15-U) could also be synthesized in the presence of urea under neutral condition, and Al-SBA-15-U exhibits extraordinary hydrothermal stability. The unique and novel route for syntheses of hydrothermally stable and well ordered mesoporous silica and aluminosilicate materials in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species would be very important for potential application of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and aluminosilicate materials (Al-SBA-15) as industrially supports and acidic catalysts.

Abstract:In this presentation, a new mesoporous molecular sieve (MPL-1) was successfully synthesized from the feedstock of pseudobeohmite (72.6wt% Al2O3), orthophosphoric acid (85wt% H3PO4) and silica sol (30wt% SiO2) under the hydrothermal process with an organic compound as template reagent. The structures and properties of as-synthesized molecular sieve were investigated by XRD and liquid nitrogen physical absorption characterization methods. The experimental results show that the molecular sieve exhibits larger pore diameters, surface area and pore volume. The hetero-atoms such as Ti, Fe and Zn may be incorporated in the framework of as-synthesized molecular sieve to produce derivatives of the mesoporous materials such as Al-Si-Ti-P, Al-Si-Fe-P, and Al-Si-Zn-P molecular sieves which have higher thermal and hydrothermal stability.
Synthesis and Characterization of Al-Msu-S Mesoporous and Meso-Microporous Molecular Sieves and Their Catalytic Performance

Abstract:Al-MSU-S mesoporous molecular sieve (Al-MSU-S(me)) with high hydrothermal stability and acidity was reported recently. In this work, the Al-MSU-S(me) and the Al-NISU-S meso-microporous molecular sieve (Al-NISU-S(me-mi)) were prepared by the assembly of protozeotitic nanoclusters. When the Al content in Al-MSU-S was 2.5 % similar to 20 % and 25 % similar to 33.3 % respectively, the corresponding hexagonal mesoporous and meso-microporous structure was obtained. Three IR vibrational bands were observed in the range of 560 - 690 cm(-1), being comparable to microporous faujusite. The tetrahedral coordinated aluminum was found in all the Al-MSU-S molecular sieves, indicating that all the aluminum had entered Al-MSU-S framework. Both Al-MSU-S(me) and Al-MSU-S(me-mi) possessed medium and stronger acid sites. The acid amount of Al-MSU-S(me) increased as Al content decreased, and the acid amount of Al-MSU-S(me-mi) was much more than that of Al-MSU-S(me), and the acid strength of Al-MSU-S(me-mi) was much stronger than that of Al-MSUS(me). The catalytic activity of Al-MSU-S in H+ form was measured by diisopropylbenzene(DIPB) cracking reaction at different temperatures and pressure. Under the pressure of 0.1. MPa the Al-MSU-S ( me-mi) had higher activity than the Al-MSU-S(me), while the catalytic activity of Al-NISU-S(me) increased steadily as Al content decreased.

Abstract:The ordered mesoporous aluminosilicate molecular sieve (MASMS-1) stable in the high-temperature steam has been successfully synthesized from the assembly of diluted ZSM-5-type precursor with mesoporous MCM-41. The material was characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, FE-SEM, TEM, FT-IR spectroscopy and Al-27 NMS NMR techniques. This mesoporous material shows high stability in the high-temperature steam [H2O ((phi=20%) in N-2 at 800 degrees C for 4 h], which might be ascribed to the synergistic effect of both thick walls containing zeolite-like five-membered ring subunits and highly condensed surface silanol groups.

Abstract:Ordered hexagonal mesoporous aluminosilicates molecular sieves, designated as MSAMS-2A, MSAMS-2G and MSAMS-2, have been synthesized via re-crystallization of mesoporous SBA-15 within the diluted solution of aluminosilicate sol–gel, glycerol, and both of them, respectively. The three materials have been characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, FT-IR, FE-SEM, 27Al MAS NMR and 29Si MAS NMR, and the corresponding hydrothermal stability of these three sieves is in the order of MSAMS-2>MSAMS-2G≫MSAMS-2A. The hydrothermal stability difference between MSAMS-2 and MSAMS-2G might be attributed to the synergistic effect of the higher condensation of silanol groups and insertion of all non-framework Al atoms into the framework of MSAMS-2. The hydrothermal stability of MSAMS-2G is higher than that of MSAMS-2A, which is likely because the high viscosity of glycerol will be in favor of the silanol groups interacting with zeolite-like subunits and moreover glycerol can act as a stabilizing guest molecule.

Abstract:High-resolution O-17/H-1 double resonance NMR spectra were obtained for two zeolites, one with a low Si/Al ratio (zeolite HY) and one with a high Si/Al ratio (HZSM-5), to investigate their local structure and Bronsted acidity. Two different oxygen signals, corresponding to Bronsted acid sites in supercages and sodalite cages of zeolite HY were readily resolved in the two-dimensional (2-D) H-1-O-17 heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) NMR spectra allowing the O-17 isotropic chemical shift (delta(CS)) and quadrupolar coupling parameters (quadrupolar coupling constant, QCC, and asymmetry parameter, eta) for the two oxygen atoms to be extracted. Similar experiments for HZSM-5 showed that the sites in this system are associated with a much larger distribution in NMR parameters than found in HY. O-17-H-1 rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR was applied to probe the O-H distances in zeolites HY and HZSM-5. Weaker O-17-H-1 dephasing was observed for zeolite HZSM-5 in comparison to that of HY, consistent with longer O-H bonds and/or increased proton mobility.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous aluminosilicate molecular sieve MSAMS-4 was synthesized via multistage recrystallization. The reaction product was characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, FTIR spectroscopy and Al-27 MAS NMR. The hydrothermal stability tests exhibit that MSAMS4, retained a well-ordered hexagonal symmetry mesostructure both after being treated with 100 degrees C. water for 120, h and streamed at 800 degrees C for 6 h.
Solid-State Nmr Studies Of The Borosilicate Mesoporous Molecular Sieve Mcm-41

Abstract:A series of boron-substituted mesoporous MCM-41 sieves has been synthesized with a wide ranging content of boron (Si/B ratio from 40 to 5) and has been studied by XRD, B-11 and Si-29 solid-state NMR. Boron enters the silicate framework and there are two different 4-coordinate boron sites in the as-prepared products. The interplanar d(100) spacing varies from 36 to 40 Angstrom depending on the Si/B ratio. There is no significant contraction of the unit cell upon calcination, but some 4-coordinate boron is converted into the less stable 3-coordination. The 3-coordinate boron can be fully reconverted to 4-coordination by equilibrating the sample with the water vapour over a saturated aqueous solution of NH4Cl at room temperature. When the sample is immersed in water for 3 days at 50 degrees C, some 3-coordinate boron is removed from the framework. The 4-coordinate B is removed upon further treatment of the hydrated calcined sample with water vapour at 150 degrees C.
Detection of Brønsted acid sites in zeolite HY with high-field 17O-MAS-NMR techniques.

Abstract:The acidity and unique porous structures of zeolites play an important role in controlling the activity and selectivity of many zeolite-based catalysts. Although (27)Al, (29)Si and (1)H NMR spectroscopy represent standard analytical tools with which to study these materials, (17)O-NMR investigations are much less routine, owing to the very low natural abundance of (17)O (0.037%), its relatively low resonant frequency and its large quadrupole moment. (17)O-NMR resonances from framework oxygen sites in a variety of zeolites have been detected, but the (17)O-NMR resonance from oxygen directly bound to the Brønsted acid site (Si-O(H)-Al) has remained elusive. Here we report the direct observation of this resonance in dehydrated zeolite HY, by using high magnetic-field strengths. (17)O-(1)H double-resonance NMR experiments are used to prove unambiguously that the (17)O signal arises from O nearby H atoms. A large quadrupolar coupling constant, the measure of the local distortion of this site, of 6.6 MHz is determined, which is similar to that obtained in ab initio calculations of zeolite HY-like clusters; this value drops to 5 MHz on acetone binding. The results presented in this paper open up methods for characterizing zeolite acidity and investigating H(+)-sorbent interactions.

Abstract:The acidity of mesoporous materials FeSiMCM-41, LaSiMCM-41, SiM-CM-41, AlSiMCM-41 and HAlSiMCM-41 has been investigated by microcalorimetric measurement of NH3 adsorption and temperature-programmed NH3 desorption method. In the initial stage of adsorption, the acid strength sequence is SiMCM-41 > HAlSiMCM-41 > AlSiMCM-41 > FeSiMCM-41 > LaSiMCM-41, in agreement with that found for microporous molecular sieve materials. A small number of strong acid sites of SiMCM-41 should result from the aluminum impurity contained in the silica source material. The acid density sequence is HAlSiMCM-41 ≫ AlSiMCM-41 > FeS-iMCM-41 > LaSiMCM-41≈SiMCM-41 and can be explained by the existing state of trivalent atoms in these samples reported in previous work. This sequence is consistent with that from NH3-TPD measurement. However, the technique of microcalorimetric adsorption is preferable in studying those samples where NH3-TPD plots could not be back to baseline at elevated temperature.
