Abstract:With the performance requirements of paper and paper based product, the needs for functional diversity of papermaking chemicals increases greatly. Grafting functional groups to starch is a way to impart extra functional properties to conventional starch and this may have a huge potential for technological development. For instance, grafting of fluorine-containing functional groups to starch can be used to improve water- and oil-proof functional property. Emulsion polymerization method was used to prepare a new sizing agent with tapioca starch. In grafting fluorinated acrylate monomer (FAM) was used as a functional monomer, and ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as an initiator. Through single factor analysis, it was found that the reaction temperature of 40□ gave the most effective results in terms of the percentage of grafting (PG), grafting efficiency (GE) and conversion of the monomer (CM), which were 31, 46 and 100%, respectively. Increase of the reaction temperature decreased PG, GE and CM. When the reaction temperature increased to 55□, gelling has been observed. The initiator dosage does not have any effect on CM. But most effective in PG and GE was obtained when the dosage of the initiator was 1.24%-1.66%. The amount of emulsifier did not cause any change in PG, GE and CM. It was found, however, the system stability is affected by the dosage of emulsifier.
