Breeding and Evaluation of New Watermelon Variety Nongkeda 6 with High Yield and Disease Resistance

Abstract:In order to breeding a new watermelon variety with high yield and high disease resistance,Nongkeda 9 was developed by inbred lines Z10-1 and J2-2.It is a mid-later maturing variety.Its growing period is about 100 days in open fields or 120 days in protected fields,and the fruit growing period is about 34 days.The plant grows vigorously and bears uniform fruits easily.Its fruit is oval shape,and the shape index is 1.4.The tough rind is green with dark stripes.The red flesh is crisp with 95 mg/g soluble solid,85.3 mg/g total sugar,11.1 mg/g protein,0.71 mg/g coarse fiber and 0.059 1 mg/g Vc,respectively.The average fruit weights 7.47 kg,while the yield was 66 073.5 kg/hm2 in regional trials,and 75 180 kg/hm2 in demonstration fields,increased by 9.8% and 16.2% compared to the control Xinong 8.It has stronger resistance to Fusarium wilt than Xinong 8.
