Abstract:The saying"taking poems as ci-poems"was a criticism made by scholars of the Song Dynasty to the ci-poems written by Su Shi.The clarification of this saying requires the retrieval of the context of the scholars from the Song Dynasty.It was first of all an issue of stylistics.Quite a lot of scholars held that ci-poems were different from poems in that they could serve as words to sing for Yan Music of the Sui and Tang Dynasties.But this criterion of division was not scientific.It was wrong because it confused metric pattern with music which was an entirely different concept.The difference between poems and ci-poems was in essence one between education and entertainment.As poems expressed wills,the function and purpose of poetry consisted in political education.As ci-poems expressed emotions,the function and purpose of ci-poetry consisted in entertainment.In the Tang Dynasty,the form of ci-poetry was not yet established and it was inevitable that the form of ci-poetry tended to get confused with that of poetry.Dealing with the creation of ci-poems in that period,the concept of"taking poems as ci-poems"could not be used.In the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties,the form of ci-poetry was established.In the later periods,poets made their creations in the way of taking poems as ci-poems.From the ci-poems written by Feng Yanji,Li Yu,Yan Shu and Ouyang Xiu,we can find the trace of taking poems as ci-poems.When Su Shi created his ci-poems,he followed the example of Liu Yong and incorporated the form of poetry into that of ci-poetry,trying to seek a new aesthetic style.The way of taking poems as ci-poems weakened the independence of this kind of style.At the same time,the significance of the existence of this kind of style was weakened.Its merits and demerits co-existed.
