The Construction of New Poetry’s Ethics during the May Fourth Movement and the Writing of Modern Chinese Poetry

Abstract:There are three key elements of the ethics of Chinese New Poetry during the May Fourth movement:baihua(the vernacular language),free verse and realistic representation,which together form the foundation of common themes and styles that feature in the development of modern Chinese poetry.The ethics of New Poetry is built upon the premise of using the vernacular in poetic composition with a focus on the reception of the concept of New Poetry and on the recognition of its literary style.The dispute of "Vernacular Chinese VS Classical Chinese" in poetry writing,on the one hand,reflects modern intellectuals’ refusal to adhere to traditional ethics in literary writing,and on the other,paves the path for the ethical transformation of modern Chinese literary creation.Hu Shih’s experiments of vernacular poetry in theory and practice contributed to the formation of New Poetry with the vernacular as a literary medium and as such,urged the transformation in literary style of modern Chinese literature in the May Forth era.Hu Shih’s poetry,as representative of the trend of times,is accordance with the development of modern Chinese poetry. With more followers joining in the group of New Poetry writing,the ethics of Chinese New Poetry is gradually accepted,complemented and finally established.
