Abstract:Supramolecular complexes system is a novel and charming domain because of its rapid development and widespread applications in different areas. Self-assembly, as a main method of forming supramolecular complexes, is significant to polymeric materials and life sciences. Hydrogen-bonded complexes are classified according to their multiplicity and associating ways in this article. The self-assembly properties and research of hydrogen-bonded complexes are comprehensively reviewed. Meanwhile, theoretical studies on hydrogen-bonded complexes of our research group are introduced.

Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Abstract:The application of hydrogen bonding recognition in designing and controlling over supramolecular polymers has attracted great attention recently due to the influence of hydrogen bonds on the thermodynamic properties, microscopic self-assembling, crystallizing and liquid crystallizing behaviors of such polymers. In this paper, the types and characters of hydrogen bonding systems, and the influences of molecular structures and intermolecular hydrogen bonds on the stability of hydrogen bonding systems are described systematically. The, recent applications of hydrogen bonding recognition systems, including carboxylic acids and pyridine based system, nucleobase derived system and quadrupolar hydrogen bonding system, in supramolecular polymers are introduced. The synthetic methods, structures, properties and functions of hydrogen bonded supramolecular polymers are mainly addressed.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers formed through noncovalent interactions have attracted great attention recently due to their special structures and properties. The supramolecular chemistry, hydrogen bond and supramolecular polymers are introduced. Supramolecular polymers formed by different hydrogen-bonded systems, including multiple-hydrogen-bonded interactions, hydrogen bond formed from carboxylic acids and pyridines, and multiple interactions including hydrogen bond and other noncovalent bond, are reviewed in detail. The research status quo and the perspective of supramolecular polymers are discussed.

Abstract:The main development in macromolecular complexation in aqueous media due to hydrogen bending over the last decade has been a better understanding of the process of complex formation. Meanwhile an ever growing interest has occurred in introducing hydrogen bonding into the polymers which originally lack donor or acceptor groups. For such polymer solutions it has been demonstrated that the transition from separated coils to complex aggregates takes place when the content of introduced interaction sites reaches a certain level. For the blends with controllable hydrogen bonding in the solid state, the relevant experiments have shown that immiscibility-miscibility-complexation transitions occur upon progressive increase in the density of hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:The hydrogen bond, one of the simplest and most versatile noncovalent interactions, is essential for many dynamic functions in living systems. After long-term fundamental development, H-bond chemistry has been well established, with a large family of molecular moieties with tunable binding affinities available. In the past several years, the growing interest in dynamic polymeric materials has aroused a series of emerging applications of H-bond chemistry in dynamic material design. This Perspective aims at discussing the design principles of H-bond-based dynamic materials by summarizing the state of the art of recently emerged H-bond chemistry and materials. Opportunities and challenges are proposed to provide an overview of this research topic, possible future directions, and potential material applications.

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry combines the strength of molecular assembly via various molecular interactions. Hydrogen bonding facilitated self-assembly with the advantages of directionality, specificity, reversibility, and strength is a promising approach for constructing advanced supramolecules. There are still some challenges in hydrogen bonding based supramolecular polymers, such as complexity originating from tautomerism of the molecular building modules, the assembly process, and structure versatility of building blocks. In this review, examples are selected to give insights into multiple hydrogen bonding driven emerging supramolecular architectures. We focus on chiral supramolecular assemblies, multiple hydrogen bonding modules as stimuli responsive sources, interpenetrating polymer networks, multiple hydrogen bonding assisted organic frameworks, supramolecular adhesives, energy dissipators, and quantitative analysis of nano-adhesion. The applications in biomedical materials are focused with detailed examples including drug design evolution for myotonic dystrophy, molecular assembly for advanced drug delivery, an indicator displacement strategy for DNA detection, tissue engineering, and self-assembly complexes as gene delivery vectors for gene transfection. In addition, insights into the current challenges and future perspectives of this field to propel the development of multiple hydrogen bonding facilitated supramolecular materials are proposed.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are, in broad brushstrokes, self-assembled structures built up from small building blocks via the use of noncovalent interactions. In favorable cases, supramolecular polymers embody the best features of covalent polymers while displaying unique reversibility, responsiveness, adaptiveness, and stability. This has made them of interest across a wide variety of fields, from molecular devices to sensors, drug delivery, cell recognition, and environmentally friendly materials systems. This review is concerned with the determinants that underlie supramolecular polymer construction, specifically the driving forces that have been exploited to create them. To date, nearly the full range of known noncovalent interactions ( e.g. , hydrogen-bonding, electrostatic interactions, charge transfer effects, and metal coordination, among others) has been exploited to create supramolecular polymers. Typically, one or more types of interactions is used to link appropriately designed monomers. The choice of noncovalent interaction can have a significant influence on the structure and function of the resulting supramolecular polymers. Understanding the connections between the forces responsible for the assembly of supramolecular polymers and their properties provides the foundation for further advances in this fast-moving field. Given the above, this review will the discuss recent progress in the rapidly advancing field of supramolecular polymers organized by the types of underlying interactions. An overview of future challenges and opportunities for supramolecular polymers, including their formation, characterization, and applications, is also provided.

Abstract:The directional and dynamic hydrogen bonds are of vital importance for both nucleic acids and proteins, but they naturally apply strong multiple hydrogen bonds in pendant groups and weak single hydrogen bond in the backbone. The hierarchy and orthogonality of multiple and single hydrogen bonds in biological systems inspire to elegantly tailor the supramolecular polymeric materials for robust mechanical properties. Herein, this work has fabricated dynamic ultrastrong and tough supramolecular materials through bioinspired rational design of strong multiple hydrogen bonds in pendant groups and weak single hydrogen bond in the backbone. Based on quadruple hydrogen bonds of ureidopyrimidinone and single hydrogen bond of amide, the supramolecular polymer with optimized hierarchical hydrogen bonds possesses high tensile strength and strong toughness of 30.6 MPa and 74.0 MJ m−3, respectively. Meanwhile, the dynamic dissociation and reformation of the hierarchical hydrogen bonds endow the supramolecular polymer with efficient crack resistance, self‐healing, recyclability, and high energy dissipation. Flexible and self‐healing conductors can be prepared by blending the supramolecular polymer with liquid metal in a simple manner. Therefore, this work expects that the plenty of hydrogen bonding pairs in the supramolecular toolkit provide many opportunities to produce robust and tough supramolecular polymeric materials without covalent crosslinking.

Abstract:The interplay between polymer science and supramolecular chemistry leads to formation of various polymeric supramolecular systems. Polymeric supramolecular systems may be of abundant supramolecular structures, thus endowed with many fascinating properties and functions such as reversibility, adaptiveness, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness owing to the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions. This review is aimed to summarize some research progresses on polymeric supramolecular systems in China, including mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymers, non-covalent connected micelles, supramolecular self-assemblies from amphiphilic hyperbranched polymers, layer-by-layer assemblies, supramolecular polymers from controllable fabrication, and artificial molecular chaperones from controllable assembly.

Abstract:In recent years, polymers capable of repeatedly self-healing physical damage and restoring mechanical properties have attracted extensive attention. Among the various supramolecular chemistry, hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) featuring with reversibility, directionality and high per-volume concentration has become one of the most attractive directions for the developing of self-healing polymers (SHPs). Herein, recent advances in the design of high-performance SHPs based on different H-bonding types, for example, H-bonding motifs and excessive H-bonding, are reviewed. In particular, the effects of structural designs of SHPs on their mechanical performance and healing efficiency are discussed in detail. Moreover, we have also summarized how to make use of these H-bonding-based SHPs for the preparation of self-healable electronic devices-with the focus on promising topics, including energy harvesting devices, energy storage devices, as well as flexible sensing devices. Finally, the current challenges and possible strategies of developing H-bonding-based SHPs and their smart electronic applications are pointed out.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline polymers have emerged as promising "smart" supramolecular functional materials with stimuli-responsive, self-healing, and recyclable properties. The hydrogen bonds can either be used as chemically responsive (i.e., pH-responsive) or as dynamic structural (i.e., temperature-responsive) moieties. Responsiveness can be manifested as changes in shape, color, or porosity and as selective binding. The liquid crystalline self-organization gives the materials their unique responsive nanostructures. Typically, the materials used for actuators or optical materials are constructed using linear calamitic (rod-shaped) hydrogen-bonded complexes, while nanoporous materials are constructed from either calamitic or discotic (disk-shaped) complexes. The dynamic structural character of the hydrogen bond moieties can be used to construct self-healing and recyclable supramolecular materials. In this review, recent findings are summarized, and potential future applications are discussed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Supramolecular Polymers Explained While polymers are constructed from chemically bonded units, supramolecular polymers arise through reversible linkages, such as hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Recent advances in the field of supramolecular polymer science have moved from a fundamental understanding of assembly properties to the introduction of functionality, in order to exploit the particular features of this class of materials. Aida et al. (p. 813 ) review the specific features of supramolecular polymers that can lead to applications in a variety of fields, including: materials—in which processability and self-healing properties are of interest; biomedicine—in which the concerns are dynamic functionality and biodegradability; and hierarchical assembly and electronic systems—with an interest in unidirectionality of charge flow.

Abstract:The energy dissipative features of hydrogen bonds under conditions of mechanical strain have provided an ongoing incentive to explore hydrogen bonding units for the purpose of controlling and customizing the mechanical properties of polymeric materials. However, there remains a need for hydrogen bond units that (1) possess directionality, (2) provide selectivity, (3) dissipate energy effectively, and (4) can be incorporated readily into polymeric materials to regulate their mechanical properties. Here, we report mechanically interlocked hydrogen bond units that incorporate multiple hydrogen bonds within a [2]catenane structure. The conformational flexibility and associated spatial folding characteristics of the [2]catenane units allow for molecular scale motion under external stress, while the interlocked structure serves as a pivot that maintains the directionality and selectivity of the resultant hydrogen bonding units. When incorporated into polymers, these interlocked hydrogen bond motifs serve to strengthen and toughen the resulting materials. This study not only presents a novel hydrogen bond unit for creating polymeric materials with improved mechanical properties but also underscores the unique opportunities that mechanically interlocked hydrogen bond structures may provide across a diverse range of applications.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are polymeric arrays of monomeric units that are held together by highly directional and reversible noncovalent interactions, resulting in polymeric properties in solution and bulk. It is an interdisciplinary direction of polymer science and supramolecular science. In contrast with conventional polymers on the basis of covalent bond, supramolecular polymers have drawn increasing attention because of many fascinating properties such as reversibility, adaptiveness, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness owing to the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions. These attributes have endowed supramolecular polymers with great potential applications in the field of functional materials, and also have motivated chemists to construct a variety of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials. The fabrication of supramolecular polymers and the investigation of functional supramolecular polymers have been a topic of great interest for the scientific communities in China in recent years. This review article is aimed to summarize some research progresses on supramolecular polymers in China, including the design of building blocks and driving forces for the fabrication of supramolecular polymers with high molecular weight, construction of supramolecular polymers with various topologies, new methods for controllable supramolecular polymerization, and functional supramolecular polymers. The characteristics, advantages, and potential applications of supramolecular polymers, as well as the comparisons of the structure and properties between the covalent polymers and the supramolecular polymers are also discussed. Although polymer science on the basis of covalent bond has been and will still be the core science in the polymer community, supramolecular polymers based on noncovalent interactions are complementary to traditional polymer science and represent new growth point by marrying supramolecular science with polymer science. Last but not least, with the aim to push forward the studies on supramolecular polymers, more attention should be paid to developing and enriching supramolecular polymer chemistry and physics, the methods for their characterization and special supramolecular polymers with tailor-made molecular architectures and functions.
