Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.
Precise Control of Noncovalent Interactions in Semiconducting Polymers for High-Performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Abstract:Performed through side-chain engineering or by incorporating intramolecular locking units, the directionality and dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions are particularly attractive for the design of novel semiconducting materials in a wide variety of applications. This work investigates the nature and position of hydrogen bonding (intra- versus intermolecular), with the objective of developing a rational approach to the design of new semiconducting materials with improved properties in the solid state. To control the polymer chains' self-assembly, a pi-conjugated polymer incorporating a moiety capable of generating intramolecular hydrogen bonding is evaluated against a polymer that allows for intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Characterization through various techniques, optical spectroscopies, grazing incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering, and solution small-angle neutron scattering showed that intramolecular hydrogen bonds resulted in materials with improved crystallinity and higher effective conjugation in the solid state. Additionally, the effect of the noncovalent interaction configuration on the optoelectronic properties was analyzed in organic field-effect transistor fabrication. Devices prepared from the materials with intramolecular hydrogen bonds showed significantly higher performance, with three orders of magnitude higher charge mobility than their counterparts fabricated from polymers with intermolecular hydrogen bonds. These results confirm the importance of chemical design on polymer structures and offer a novel route for the design of high-efficiency semiconducting polymers for next-generation electronics.

Abstract:The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures, rheology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μ J/cm 2 , suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Conjugation breakers (CBs) with different H-bonding chemistries and linker flexibilities are designed and incorporated into a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymer backbone. The effects of H-bonding interactions on polymer semiconductor morphology, mechanical properties, and electrical performance are systematically investigated. We observe that CBs with an H-bonding self-association constant >0.7 or a denser packing tendency are able to induce higher polymer chain aggregation and crystallinity in as-casted thin films, resulting in a higher modulus and crack on-set strain. Additionally, the rDoC (relative degree of crystallinity) of the stretched thin film with the highest crack on-set strain only suffers a small decrease, suggesting the main energy dissipation mechanism is the breakage of H-bonding interactions. By contrast, other less stretchable polymer films dissipate strain energy through the breakage of crystalline domains, indicated by a drastic decrease in rDoC. Furthermore, we evaluate their electrical performances under mechanical strain in fully stretchable field-effect transistors. The polymer with the highest crack on-set strain has the least degradation in mobility as a function of strain. Overall, these observations suggest that we can aptly tune the mechanical properties of a polymer semiconductor by modulating intermolecular interactions, such as H-bonding chemistry and linker flexibility. Such understanding provides molecular design guidelines for future stretchable semiconductors.
Characterization of Hydrogen Bonding Formation and Breaking in Semiconducting Polymers under Mechanical Strain

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based donor-acceptor conjugated polymers, with increasing amount of weak H-bonding units, namely 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide (PDCA), inserted as end groups in alkyl side chains were prepared and investigated. In contrast to previously reported DPP polymers containing PDCA units as conjugation breakers along the polymer backbone, PDCA in the alkyl side chains readily produced almost quantitative formation of intermolecular H-bonding even at low PDCA unit content (<10 mol %) as shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The efficient intermolecular H-bonding was further supported by the appearance of a pronounced vibronic shoulder in the UV-vis spectra and a reduction of interlamellar spacing (from 24.02 to 22.87 angstrom) compared to the neat DPP polymer. Increasing mol % of PDCA units in side chains of DPP conjugated polymers also has a clear effect on the thermal and mechanical properties of the films as investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Polymers with a high loading of PDCA showed a linear increase in both tan delta intensity and temperature at which softening of film cross-linking occurs. In particular, at a comparable mol %, polymers with PDCA units along the conjugated backbone showed a lower transition intensity and on average a 10-20 degrees C higher temperature required for H-bonding breaking. FTIR coupled with crack onset measurements showed that H-bonding breaking during tensile deformation happens only at strains close to crack onset. All these observations suggest that molecular engineering of conjugated polymers bearing H-bonding units has a strong influence on microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties of solution processed films, and final energy dissipation mechanisms in stretchable electronics applications.

Abstract:The hydrogen bond, one of the simplest and most versatile noncovalent interactions, is essential for many dynamic functions in living systems. After long-term fundamental development, H-bond chemistry has been well established, with a large family of molecular moieties with tunable binding affinities available. In the past several years, the growing interest in dynamic polymeric materials has aroused a series of emerging applications of H-bond chemistry in dynamic material design. This Perspective aims at discussing the design principles of H-bond-based dynamic materials by summarizing the state of the art of recently emerged H-bond chemistry and materials. Opportunities and challenges are proposed to provide an overview of this research topic, possible future directions, and potential material applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded semiconductors stand among the next generation of electronic materials thanks to their promising and versatile properties. Hydrogen-bonding has been proven to effectively compete with traditional p-p stacking, yielding well-connected structures that enhance device morphology and electrical performance. Nevertheless, the precise positioning of hydrogen-bonding units within the molecular structure of p-conjugated segments, can significantly shape the supramolecular architectures that dictate the pathways for charge carriers and ultimately, device efficiency. We elucidate this scenario by exploring diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) molecules featuring amide units strategically positioned at varying distances from the DPP core. Using a comprehensive combination of spectroscopy, structural and microscopy tools, we rationalize the charge transport properties through a contactless technique. Our results reveal that the proximity of the amide units to the DPP core governs the suppression or promotion of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding, resulting in materials exhibiting distinct crystalline or amorphous structures, along with divergent values of photoconductivity and charge carrier lifetimes. More importantly, the strategic positioning of hydrogen-bonding units represents the next step towards integrating hydrogen-bonded small molecules into practical optoelectronic devices

Abstract:The materials community has witnessed a complexity expansion in semiconducting polymers by structural engineering. The most thriving area of polymeric semiconductors lies in the adoption of the highly tunable donor–acceptor motif. This motif has revolutionized the design strategy of semiconducting polymers. The appeal of replacing benzene or thiophene rings with sp<sup>2</sup>-hybridized N-heteroaromatic rings (azine or azole heterocycles) has directed design efforts toward materials amenable to n-type or ambipolar charge transport behaviors. The introduced nitrogen atoms allow for lowered frontier molecular orbital energy levels to enhance electron injection and reduce the steric effect to maximize electronic coupling. This review provides an overview of recent progress in azine- or azole-type N-heteroaromatics for use in structural engineering of high-mobility polymeric semiconductors. Various synthetic routes to these N-heteroaromatic building blocks and corresponding polymers are reviewed and may inspire new development in molecular engineering. Important structural features are discussed including their electronic structures and conformational preferences. This review also discusses how the molecular structures of these N-heteroaromatics are correlated to the device performances. Collectively, the N-heteroaromatics-containing semiconducting polymers are lead candidates for functional design for specific applications in modern organic electronics.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Polymersemiconductors composed of a carbon-based pi conjugatedbackbone have been studied for several decades as active layers ofmultifarious organic electronic devices. They combine the advantagesof the electrical conductivity of metals and semiconductors and themechanical behavior of plastics, which are going to become one ofthe futures of modulable electronic materials. The performance ofconjugated materials depends both on their chemical structures andthe multilevel microstructures in solid states. Despite the greatefforts that have been made, they are still far from producing a clearpicture among intrinsic molecular structures, microstructures, anddevice performances. This review summarizes the development of polymersemiconductors in recent decades from the aspects of material designand the related synthetic strategies, multilevel microstructures,processing technologies, and functional applications. The multilevelmicrostructures of polymer semiconductors are especially emphasized,which plays a decisive role in determining the device performance.The discussion shows the panorama of polymer semiconductors researchand sets up a bridge across chemical structures, microstructures,and finally devices performances. Abstract:Polymeric semiconductors are emerging as a kind of competitive photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution due to their well‐tunable structures, versatile functionalization, and low‐cost processibility. In this work, a series of conjugated porous polymers with substantial cyano‐substituted fully sp2‐carbon frameworks are efficiently synthesized by using electron‐deficient tricyanomesitylene as a key building block to promote an organic base‐catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation with various aldehyde‐substituted arenes. The resulting porous polymers feature donor‐acceptor structures with π‐extended conjugation, rendering them with distinct semiconducting properties. They possess hierarchically porous structures, nanoscale morphologies, and intriguing wettability. These promising physical characters, finely tailorable by varying the arene units, are essentially relevant to the abundant cynao substituents over the whole frameworks. The as‐prepared porous polymers exhibit excellent visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic activity for water‐splitting hydrogen evolution with apparent quantum yield up to 2.0% at 420 nm or 1.9% at 470 nm, among the highest values yet reported for porous polymer‐based photocatalysts, also representing the first example of such kinds of catalysts formed through a metal‐free‐catalyzed carbon–carbon coupling reaction.

Abstract:The energy dissipative features of hydrogen bonds under conditions of mechanical strain have provided an ongoing incentive to explore hydrogen bonding units for the purpose of controlling and customizing the mechanical properties of polymeric materials. However, there remains a need for hydrogen bond units that (1) possess directionality, (2) provide selectivity, (3) dissipate energy effectively, and (4) can be incorporated readily into polymeric materials to regulate their mechanical properties. Here, we report mechanically interlocked hydrogen bond units that incorporate multiple hydrogen bonds within a [2]catenane structure. The conformational flexibility and associated spatial folding characteristics of the [2]catenane units allow for molecular scale motion under external stress, while the interlocked structure serves as a pivot that maintains the directionality and selectivity of the resultant hydrogen bonding units. When incorporated into polymers, these interlocked hydrogen bond motifs serve to strengthen and toughen the resulting materials. This study not only presents a novel hydrogen bond unit for creating polymeric materials with improved mechanical properties but also underscores the unique opportunities that mechanically interlocked hydrogen bond structures may provide across a diverse range of applications.

Abstract:As a new class of porous crystalline materials, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) assembled from building blocks by hydrogen bonds have gained increasing attention. HOFs benefit from advantages including mild synthesis, easy purification, and good recyclability. However, some HOFs transform into unstable frameworks after desolvation, which hinders their further applications. Nowadays, the main challenges of developing HOFs lie in stability improvement, porosity establishment, and functionalization. Recently, more and more stable and permanently porous HOFs have been reported. Of all these design strategies, stronger charge-assisted hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds have been proven to be effective for developing stable, porous, and functional solids called hybrid HOFs, including ionic and metallized HOFs. This Review discusses the rational design synthesis principles of hybrid HOFs and their cutting-edge applications in selective inclusion, proton conduction, gas separation, catalysis and so forth.

Abstract:Recent developments in supramolecular materials have focused on hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), which have quickly developed into a family of stable and useful crystalline porous materials by combining several intermolecular complementary hydrogen connections with other synthetic techniques. Because of the collective behavior of functional units with novel features, the regulated integration of HOFs with functional materials has produced new multifunctional composites with properties superior to those of their individual components. This perspective offers an overview of the significant advancements in the development of various multifunctional HOF composites made with HOFs and active species, including metal nanoparticles, MOFs, biomolecules, polymers, medicines, etc., for diverse applications like gas separation, catalysis, sensing, biomedicines, and antibacterial applications. Finally, the unresolved challenges and future developments in the field that require significant research efforts are discussed.

Abstract:Semiconductors are widely used in electron devices. With the development of wearable soft-electron devices, conventional inorganic semiconductors are unable to meet the demand because of their high rigidity and high cost. Thus, scientists construct organic semiconductors with high charge mobility, low cost, eco-friendly, stretchable, etc. Due to the excellent performance of stretchable organic semiconductors, they can be widely used as wearable soft-electron devices, such as stretchable organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), organic solar cells (OSCs), etc. Contains flexible display devices and flexible power sources, which are of great interest for applications of future electron devices. However, there are still some challenges that need to be solved. Commonly, enhancing the stretchability may cause the degradation of charge mobility, because of the destruction of the conjugated system. Currently, scientists find that hydrogen bonding can enhance the stretchability of organic semiconductors with high charge mobility. Thus in this review, based on the structure and design strategies of hydrogen bonding, various hydrogen bonding induced stretchable organic semiconductors are introduced. In addition, the applications of the hydrogen bonding induced stretchable organic semiconductors are reviewed. Finally, the stretchable organic semiconductors design concept and potential evolution trends are discussed. The final goal is to outline a theoretical scaffold for the design of high-performance wearable soft-electron devices, which can also further advance the development of stretchable organic semiconductors for applications.

Abstract:The directional and dynamic hydrogen bonds are of vital importance for both nucleic acids and proteins, but they naturally apply strong multiple hydrogen bonds in pendant groups and weak single hydrogen bond in the backbone. The hierarchy and orthogonality of multiple and single hydrogen bonds in biological systems inspire to elegantly tailor the supramolecular polymeric materials for robust mechanical properties. Herein, this work has fabricated dynamic ultrastrong and tough supramolecular materials through bioinspired rational design of strong multiple hydrogen bonds in pendant groups and weak single hydrogen bond in the backbone. Based on quadruple hydrogen bonds of ureidopyrimidinone and single hydrogen bond of amide, the supramolecular polymer with optimized hierarchical hydrogen bonds possesses high tensile strength and strong toughness of 30.6 MPa and 74.0 MJ m−3, respectively. Meanwhile, the dynamic dissociation and reformation of the hierarchical hydrogen bonds endow the supramolecular polymer with efficient crack resistance, self‐healing, recyclability, and high energy dissipation. Flexible and self‐healing conductors can be prepared by blending the supramolecular polymer with liquid metal in a simple manner. Therefore, this work expects that the plenty of hydrogen bonding pairs in the supramolecular toolkit provide many opportunities to produce robust and tough supramolecular polymeric materials without covalent crosslinking.
