Abstract:A comprehensive methodology of ordering solution-processed semiconducting polymers is presented, correlating solvent, solute, and substrate interactions in an intermolecular framework. Utilizing temperature-dependent UV–VIS absorption, we reveal a reversible phase transition between unguidable 2D aggregates and guidable quasi-3D bundles, enabling directional molecular assembly along nano-templated self-assembled monolayers (nSAMs). Within an optimized dynamic length scale 2.5 Å between weakly bonded polymer bundles and nSAMs, random polymer fibers can be transformed into unidirectional fibers with increased molecular anisotropy from 1.0 to 9.2, verified by atomic force microscopy and polarized Raman scattering. Intermolecular dynamics are quantitatively manipulated with angstrom-level precision to achieve macroscopic order.

Abstract:AbstractConjugated microporous polymers are a unique class of polymers that combine extended π‐conjugation with inherent porosity. However, these polymers are synthesized through solution‐phase reactions to yield insoluble and unprocessable solids, which preclude not only the evaluation of their conducting properties but also the fabrication of thin films for device implementation. Here, we report a strategy for the synthesis of thin films of π‐conjugated microporous polymers by designing thiophene‐based electropolymerization at the solution–electrode interface. High‐quality films are prepared on a large area of various electrodes, the film thickness is controllable, and the films are used for device fabrication. These films are outstanding hole conductors and, upon incorporation of fullerenes into the pores, function as highly efficient photoactive layers for energy conversions. Our film strategy may boost the applications in photocatalysis, energy storage, and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Small molecular (SM) semiconductors with sufficient solubility and high performance are highly desired in solution-processed organic electronics. In order to address the poor solubility that a reported high performance molecular semiconductor (BDT(ThBTTh)2) with a benzodithiophene (BDT) core and two thiophene-benzothiadiazole-thiophene arms (ThBTTh) suffers from, two additional hexyl side chains have been designed into its scaffold and different attaching fashions yield two new SM semiconductors, SM1 and SM2. The integration positions in SM1 are terminal thiophene units, while that of SM2 are located on the inner thiophene units neighbor to the central BDT unit. With expectation, the so-prepared SM1 and SM2 possess much better solubility than BDT(ThBTTh)2. However, the integration of additional alkyl side chains sacrifices its optoelectronic performance and the sacrifice extent is highly dependent on their attaching fashions. The molecule SM2 having new additional side chains in two inner thiophene units displayed much better performance (hole mobility: 1.80 × 10−2 cm2 V-1 s-1, solar cell efficiency: (2.57 ± 0.17)%) than SM1 that integrates them at the two terminal thiophene units (hole mobility: 2.18 × 10−4 cm2 V-1 s-1, solar cell efficiency: (0.87 ± 0.11)%). For understanding the origination of such performance differences, detail characterizations including differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, density function theoretical calculation, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy have been carried out. Finally, benefiting from their enhanced good solubility in non-chlorinated solvents, toluene has been proved capable as a green processing solvent for organic solar cell fabrication. The so-obtained SM2 devices displayed an optimized efficiency of (2.35 ± 0.19)%.

Abstract:Semiconducting polymers are at the forefront of next-generation organic electronics due to their robust mechanical and optoelectronic properties. However, their extended π-conjugation often leads to materials with low solubilities in common organic solvents, thus requiring processing in high-boiling-point and toxic halogenated solvents to generate thin-film devices. To address this environmental concern, a natural product-inspired side-chain engineering approach was used to incorporate galactose-containing moieties into semiconducting polymers toward improved processability in greener solvents. Novel isoindigo-based polymers with different ratios of galactose-containing side chains were synthesized to improve the solubilities of the organic semiconductors in alcohol-based solvents. The addition of carbohydrate-containing side chains to π-conjugated polymers was found to considerably impact the intermolecular aggregation of the materials and their microstructures in the solid state as confirmed by atomic force microscopy and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The charge transport characteristics of the new semiconductors were evaluated by the fabrication of organic field-effect transistors prepared from both toxic halogenated and greener alcohol-based solvents. Importantly, the incorporation of carbohydrate-containing side chains was shown to have very little detrimental impact on the electronic properties of the polymer when processed from green solvents.

Abstract:Organic semiconducting polymers are a powerful platform for the design of next-generation technologies due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability, allowing access to low-cost and scalable manufacturing techniques such as spin-coating, slot-die coating and roll-to-roll printing. However, their extended π-conjugation results in low solubility in common organic solvents, requiring the use of toxic halogenated solvents to generate thin films and devices. Furthermore, accessible post-functionalization of semiconductors toward the development of multifunctional devices and sensors remains a challenge due to limited solid-state chemistry for alkyl side chains. In this work, an asymmetric side-chain engineering approach was used to introduce terminal hydroxyl moieties alongside traditional solubilizing branched alkyl chains into an isoindigo-based polymer. The hydroxyl moieties led to significantly improved processability in alcohol-based solvents without sacrificing electronic performance in thin film organic field-effect transistors. Solid state morphologies of the thin films processed from both alcohol-based and traditional halogenated solvents were further characterized using atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence wide angle x-ray scattering. Additionally, Cryo-EM was utilized in order to characterize the role of asymmetric side-chain functionality in solution state aggregation. The versatility of this design was further probed using fluorescein isothiocyanate to directly functionalize the asymmetric polymer in thin film. This facile solid-state post-functionalization further demonstrates asymmetric side-chain engineering to be a viable approach toward the development of sustainably manufactured multifunctional electronics.

Abstract:Intermolecular interactions are crucial in determining the morphology of solution-processed semiconducting polymer thin films. However, these random interactions often lead to disordered or short-range ordered structures. Achieving long-range order in these films has been a challenge due to limited control over microscopic interactions in current techniques. Here, we present a molecular-level methodology that leverages spatial matching of intermolecular dynamics among solutes, solvents, and substrates to induce directional molecular assembly in weakly bonded polymers. Within the optimized dynamic scale of 2.5 Å between polymer side chains and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on nanogrooved substrates, our approach transforms random aggregates into unidirectional fibers with a remarkable increase in the anisotropic stacking ratio from 1 to 11. The Flory-Huggins-based molecular stacking model accurately predicts the transitioning order on various SAMs, validated by morphologic and spectroscopic observations. The enhanced structural ordering spans over 3 orders of magnitude in length, raising from the smallest 7.3 nm random crystallites to >14 um unidirectional fibers on sub-millimeter areas. Overall, this study provides insights into the control of complex intermolecular interactions and offers enhanced molecular-level controllability in solution-based processes.

Abstract:Performed through side-chain engineering or by incorporating intramolecular locking units, the directionality and dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions are particularly attractive for the design of novel semiconducting materials in a wide variety of applications. This work investigates the nature and position of hydrogen bonding (intra- versus intermolecular), with the objective of developing a rational approach to the design of new semiconducting materials with improved properties in the solid state. To control the polymer chains' self-assembly, a pi-conjugated polymer incorporating a moiety capable of generating intramolecular hydrogen bonding is evaluated against a polymer that allows for intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Characterization through various techniques, optical spectroscopies, grazing incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering, and solution small-angle neutron scattering showed that intramolecular hydrogen bonds resulted in materials with improved crystallinity and higher effective conjugation in the solid state. Additionally, the effect of the noncovalent interaction configuration on the optoelectronic properties was analyzed in organic field-effect transistor fabrication. Devices prepared from the materials with intramolecular hydrogen bonds showed significantly higher performance, with three orders of magnitude higher charge mobility than their counterparts fabricated from polymers with intermolecular hydrogen bonds. These results confirm the importance of chemical design on polymer structures and offer a novel route for the design of high-efficiency semiconducting polymers for next-generation electronics.
Optimizing the Crystallization Behavior and Film Morphology of Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Semiconducting Polymers by Side-Chain–Solvent Interaction in Nonpolar Solvents

Abstract:The solution state of a conjugated polymer plays a critical role in the film morphology and charge carrier mobility of the solution process organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, it remains challenging to establish the relationship between solution-state and solid-state morphologies. Herein, we report an effective strategy to control the film formation process and film morphology by regulating the solution state, specifically, through the interaction between the branched side chain of poly[4-(4,4-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-4H-cydopenta[ 1,2-b :5,4-b']dithiophen-2-yl)-alt- [1,2,5]-thiadiazolo [3,4-c] pyridine] (PCDTPT-ODD) and the nonpolar solvent. A precise adjustment of the solution state using the Hansen solubility parameter distance (R-a) has been achieved. Compared to the polar solvent, ordered aggregates were formed in the solution formed by nonpolar solvents. Interestingly, a highly ordered chain arrangement was observed in solutions with suitable R-a's (8.2 and 9.4 MPa1/2 for hexane and isooctane, respectively). Importantly, solution-state aggregation was maintained in the drop-casting film due to the memory effect; the as-prepared films were composed of different fiber sizes and crystal regions. The fiber consisted of a face-on region, with the polymer chains in the fiber aligned perpendicular to the long axis of the fibers. The crystallization process of the edge-on region was independent of the face-on region. The face-on and edge-on regions were produced through the aggregated and disordered parts, respectively. As the R-a increased, the fiber size and the face-on region content increased. Finally, the OFET device mobility was optimized with a significant increase in mu (from 9.7 x 10(-5) to 1.3 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)). These results showed that the precise regulations of the solution state by the side-chain-solvent interaction play an important role in the film formation process, film morphology, crystallization behavior, and device properties.

Abstract:Solvents have an essential association with polymer solution behavior. However, few researches have been deeply done on this respect. In recent years, our research group focus on the study on effect of solvent properties on solution behavior and film condensed state structure for semi-rigid conjugated polymer up till to apply for optoelectronic device. Herein, influence of solvent properties including solubility of solvent, aromaticity, polarity and hydrogen bonds on semi-rigid polymer chain solution behavior, i.e., single chain conformation, chain shape, size and chains aggregated density were studied by means of static/dynamic laser light scattering (DLS/SLS) and exponential law etc. Effect of solvent properties on condensed state structure of the semi-rigid conjugated polymer film was studied by UV absorption spectroscopy, PL spectroscopy and electron microscopy etc. The essential reasons for the influence were discovered and the mechanism was revealed. It was found that solution behavior with different solvent properties had an essential physical relationship with chains condensed state structure of the semi-rigid conjugated polymers. More importantly, there was a quantitative structure-activity relationship between solution and film. The key to this relationship depended on the interaction between solvent molecules and the semi-rigid conjugated polymer chains. This interaction could also affect optoelectronic devices performance. This study is of great significance to effectively control the condensed state structure of the semirigid conjugated polymers in the process of dynamic evolution from solutions to films. It not only enriches the knowledge and understanding of both semi-rigid conjugated polymer solution behaviors and film condensed state physics based on polymer physics, but also is meaningful to practical application for conjugated polymer and other traditional polymer systems.

Abstract:The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures, rheology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μ J/cm 2 , suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:One major advantage of organic electronics is their superior processability relative to traditional silicon-based materials. However, most high-performing polymer semiconductors exhibit poor solubility and require toxic chlorinated solvents coupled with inefficient coating methods such as spin-coating for device fabrication. Therefore, developing polymer semiconductors that are processable in environmentally benign solvents and compatible with effective printing techniques while maintaining good charge transport properties is crucial for the industrialization of low-cost and lightweight plastic electronics. In this study, alkyl flexible linkers with branched tertiary carbon atoms are inserted to a high-mobility diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymer backbone to suppress polymer aggregation in solution, decrease crystallinity, and increase free volume. The polymer readily dissolves in industrial solvents and shows a 70-fold increase in solubility compared to its fully conjugated counterpart. Furthermore, due to its high solubility, the polymer can be inkjet-printed and solution-sheared at high concentrations using eco-friendly solvents such as p-xylene and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran with a maximum hole mobility of 2.76 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and on-off ratio above 10(5) in organic field-effect transistors.
Azaisoindigo-Based Polymers with a Linear Hybrid Siloxane-Based Side Chain for High-Performance Semiconductors Processable with Nonchlorinated Solvents

Abstract:Developing nonchlorinated solvent-processed polymeric semiconductors to avoid environmental concerns and health hazards caused by chlorinated solvents is especially urgent. Here, a molecular design strategy, composed of backbone fluorination and side chain optimization, is used for preparing high-solubility and high-performance azaisoindigo-based polymers. The effects of different backbones and side chains on the solubility, film crystallinity, molecular stacking, and charge transport properties are mainly investigated. A long linear hybrid siloxane-based chain (C6-Si7) is chosen to improve the solubility, while the incorporation of fluorine (F) is used to enhance the film crystallinity and charge mobility. By optimizing the backbone and side chain, both solubility and charge mobility of the azaisoindigo-based polymer are significantly improved. As a result, PAIIDBFT-Si films processed with toluene, tetrahydrofuran, ether, and alkanes, achieved charge mobilities of 4.14, 3.78, 2.14, and 2.34 cm2 V–1 s–1, respectively. Abstract:Understanding molecular design rules for stretchable polymer semiconductors is important for enabling next generation stretchable electronic circuits. To simultaneously improve both electrical properties and mechanical stretchability, a design strategy is reported in introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with bulky side groups in semiconducting polymers. In this work, the understanding of this design concept is improved by systematically investigating the effect of different types of bulky side groups asymmetrically substituted on conjugated polymer semiconductor backbones. Specifically, four types of side groups are investigated, including naphthalene (NaPh), biphenyl (PhPh), thienylphenyl (ThPh), and alkylphenyl (C4Ph), asymmetrically substituted on benzodithiophene units, namely asy-BDT. With the four types of side groups installed on BDT-containing conjugated polymers in an asymmetrical fashion, it is observed that they reduced the polymer chain aggregation and film crystallinity, hence improving the film stretchability. Furthermore, the fully conjugated polymer backbone allows maintenance of good charge carrier mobilities. Specifically, polymer PDPP-C4Ph (with C4Ph side groups) shows the highest mobility in the fully stretchable transistor and maintained its mobility even after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Overall, the results provide anunderstanding of the use of asymmetrically substituted fused-ring conjugated polymer structures to tune mechanical and charge transport properties.

Abstract:Conjugation breakers (CBs) with different H-bonding chemistries and linker flexibilities are designed and incorporated into a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymer backbone. The effects of H-bonding interactions on polymer semiconductor morphology, mechanical properties, and electrical performance are systematically investigated. We observe that CBs with an H-bonding self-association constant >0.7 or a denser packing tendency are able to induce higher polymer chain aggregation and crystallinity in as-casted thin films, resulting in a higher modulus and crack on-set strain. Additionally, the rDoC (relative degree of crystallinity) of the stretched thin film with the highest crack on-set strain only suffers a small decrease, suggesting the main energy dissipation mechanism is the breakage of H-bonding interactions. By contrast, other less stretchable polymer films dissipate strain energy through the breakage of crystalline domains, indicated by a drastic decrease in rDoC. Furthermore, we evaluate their electrical performances under mechanical strain in fully stretchable field-effect transistors. The polymer with the highest crack on-set strain has the least degradation in mobility as a function of strain. Overall, these observations suggest that we can aptly tune the mechanical properties of a polymer semiconductor by modulating intermolecular interactions, such as H-bonding chemistry and linker flexibility. Such understanding provides molecular design guidelines for future stretchable semiconductors.

Abstract:Strategies to improve stretchability of polymer semiconductors, such as introducing flexible conjugation-breakers or adding flexible blocks, usually result in degraded electrical properties. In this work, we propose a concept to address this limitation, by introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with optimized bulky side groups and maintaining a conjugated polymer backbone. Specifically, we investigated two classes of rigid fused-ring systems, namely, benzene-substituted dibenzothiopheno[6,5-b:6',5'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (Ph-DBTTT) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) systems, and identified molecules displaying optimized electrical and mechanical properties. In the IDT system, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed promising electrical and mechanical properties. In fully stretchable transistors, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed a mobility of 0.27 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at 75% strain and maintained its mobility after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Our results underscore the intimate correlation between chemical structures, mechanical properties, and charge carrier mobility for polymer semiconductors. Our described molecular design approach will help to expedite the next generation of intrinsically stretchable high-performance polymer semiconductors.
Side Chain Engineering on Medium Bandgap Copolymers to Suppress Triplet Formation for High-Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells.

Abstract:Suppression of carrier recombination is critically important in realizing high-efficiency polymer solar cells. Herein, it is demonstrated difluoro-substitution of thiophene conjugated side chain on donor polymer can suppress triplet formation for reducing carrier recombination. A new medium bandgap 2D-conjugated D-A copolymer J91 is designed and synthesized with bi(alkyl-difluorothienyl)-benzodithiophene as donor unit and fluorobenzotriazole as acceptor unit, for taking the advantages of the synergistic fluorination on the backbone and thiophene side chain. J91 demonstrates enhanced absorption, low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital energy level, and higher hole mobility, in comparison with its control polymer J52 without fluorination on the thiophene side chains. The transient absorption spectra indicate that J91 can suppress the triplet formation in its blend film with n-type organic semiconductor acceptor m-ITIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(3-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2,3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene). With these favorable properties, a higher power conversion efficiency of 11.63% with high VOC of 0.984 V and high JSC of 18.03 mA cm-2 is obtained for the polymer solar cells based on J91/m-ITIC with thermal annealing. The improved photovoltaic performance by thermal annealing is explained from the morphology change upon thermal annealing as revealed by photoinduced force microscopy. The results indicate that side chain engineering can provide a new solution to suppress carrier recombination toward high efficiency, thus deserves further attention.

Abstract:A systematical investigation on solvent-vapor annealing in polymer thin film transistors is performed using a thiazolothiazole-bithiazole conjugated polymer as the active layer. Film morphology, packing order and device performance are closely related to polarity and solubility parameter of the annealing solvent and annealing time. The formation of highly ordered and closely connected fibrillar domains is realized by using a solvent with similar solubility parameter and polarity to the conjugated polymer. Field-effect transistors based on pristine polymer films exhibit a highest charge carrier mobility of 0.0067cm2V−1s−1. After solvent vapor annealing with THF for 48h, the mobility boosts up to 0.075cm2V−1s−1. This correlation between solvent polarity, solubility parameter and film morphology, packing order and mobility provides a useful guideline towards high performance polymer thin film transistors with solvent-vapor annealing method.
Unraveling the Main Chain and Side Chain Effects on Thin Film Morphology and Charge Transport in Quinoidal Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Three series of low-bandgap polymers based on a novel quinoidal para-azaquinodimethane (p-AQM) unit are devised and synthesized, enabling an in-depth study of the impact of structural factors such as polymer main chain, branching point of the side chain, and the length of the branch chains on the thin film morphologies and charge transport properties. Morphological studies reveal that the polymers composed of larger repeating units exhibit a stronger tendency to form edge-on lamella. On the other hand, altering the side chain structures of polymers with the same main chain configuration indicates that the branching point position has a more deterministic impact than the branch chain length on the interchain interactions and the crystallite orientation. These results demonstrate a compound odd-even effect of the branching point on the chain packing and morphology, which correlates well with the corresponding field effect transistor performances. The polymer with the branching point at the fourth carbon displays the highest charge carrier mobility over 1.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), concurrent with a bimodal texture. This study provides a comprehensive description of the correlations between polymer structures, thin film morphology, and device performances, providing a clear path to desirable bimodal thin film texture for charge transport.
Solvent-Free Transfer of Freestanding Large-Area Conjugated Polymer Films for Optoelectronic Applications

Abstract:Conventional processes for depositing thin films of conjugated polymers are restricted to those based on vapor, liquid, and solution-phase precursors. Each of these methods bear some limitations. For example, low-bandgap polymers with alternating donor-acceptor structures cannot be deposited from the vapor phase, and solution-phase deposition is always subject to issues related to the incompatibility of the substrate with the solvent. Here, a technique to enable deposition of large-area, ultra-thin films (≈20 nm or more), which are transferred from the surface of water, is demonstrated. From the water, these pre-solidified films can then be transferred to a desired substrate, circumventing limitations such as solvent orthogonality. The quality of these films is characterized by a variety of imaging and electrochemical measurements. Mechanical toughness is identified as a limiting property of polymer compatibility, along with some strategies to address this limitation. As a demonstration, the films are used as the hole-transport layer in perovskite solar cells, in which their performance is shown to be comparable to controls formed by spin-coating.
