Abstract:Hydrogen bonded azomethines were studied as building blocks for semiconducting polymers. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that hydrogen bonds were formed between the carbamate hydrogens of side chains and azomethine nitrogen in building block CTB and CTP. The CTP also had additional weak hydrogen bonds between azomethine hydrogen and imine nitrogen of pyrazine. These hydrogen bonds improved the coplanarity of the building blocks and promoted pi-electron delocalization and intermolecular stacking. Two conjugated polymers PBBDT and PPBDT based on the new building blocks were synthesized via a Stille cross-coupling reaction. These conjugated polymers showed broad and strong optical absorption in the visible region. The bulk heterojunction organic solar cells with PBBDT and PPBDT as electron donors and small molecular non-fullerene acceptors were studied. The solar cells based on PBBDT as the electron donor and Y6 as an electron acceptor showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.2%. Hydrogen-bonded polyazomethines were synthesized for organic solar cell devices.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers that can efficiently transport both ionic and electronic charges have broad applications in next-generation optoelectronic, bioelectronic, and energy storage devices. To date, almost all the conjugated polymers have hydrophobic backbones, which impedes efficient ion diffusion/transport in aqueous media. Here, we design and synthesize a novel hydrophilic polymer building block, 4a-azonia-naphthalene (AN), drawing inspiration from biological systems. Because of the strong electron-withdrawing ability of AN, the AN-based polymers show typical n-type charge transport behaviors. We find that cationic aromatics exhibit strong cation-π interactions, leading to smaller π-π stacking distance, interesting ion diffusion behavior, and good morphology stability. Additionally, AN enhances the hydrophilicity and ionic-electronic coupling of the polymer, which can help to improve ion diffusion/injection speed, and operational stability of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The integration of cationic building blocks will undoubtedly enrich the material library for high-performance n-type conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Quinoidal structures incorporating expanded para-quinodimethane (p-QM) units have garnered great interest as functional organic electronic, optical, and magnetic materials. The direct use of the compact p-QM unit as an electronic building block, however, has been inhibited by the high reactivity conveyed by its biradical character. Herein, we introduce a stable p-QM variant, namely p-azaquinodimethane (p-AQM), that incorporates nitrogen atoms in the central ring and alkoxy substituents on the periphery to increase the stability of the quinoidal structure. The succinct synthesis from readily available precursors leads to regio- and stereospecific p-AQMs that can be readily integrated into the backbone of conjugated polymers. The quinoidal character of the p-AQM unit endows the resulting polymers with narrow band gaps and high carrier transport mobilities. The study of a series of copolymers employing different numbers of thiophene units revealed an unconventional trend in band gaps, which is distinct from the widely adopted donor-acceptor approach to tuning the band gaps of conjugated polymers. Theoretical calculations have shed light on the nature of this trend, which may provide a unique class of conjugated polymers with promising optical and electronic properties.

Abstract:In this study, versatile alkoxycarbonyl substituents were incorporated onto the azaisoindigo (AIID)-based polymeric π-skeleton, affording two novel polymers PAZPT and PAZPTEt. The PAZPT has the alkoxycarbonyl groups substituted on its thiophene unit, whereas the PAZPTEt has both the thiophene and thieno[3,2-b]thiophen units substituted with alkoxycarbonyl groups. As results, PAZPT has more planar conjugated backbone conformation than that of PAZPTEt. Experimental characterization results indicated that alkoxycarbonyl substituents can effectively pull down the frontier molecular orbital energy levels and optimize the solubility and molecular packing mode of conjugated polymers. All the field-effect transistors based on the two polymers showed ambipolar carrier transport characteristics. Such results show that introducing alkoxycarbonyl substituents on polymeric π-skeleton might be a potential approach in fine-tuning the semiconducting properties of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:The materials community has witnessed a complexity expansion in semiconducting polymers by structural engineering. The most thriving area of polymeric semiconductors lies in the adoption of the highly tunable donor–acceptor motif. This motif has revolutionized the design strategy of semiconducting polymers. The appeal of replacing benzene or thiophene rings with sp2-hybridized N-heteroaromatic rings (azine or azole heterocycles) has directed design efforts toward materials amenable to n-type or ambipolar charge transport behaviors. The introduced nitrogen atoms allow for lowered frontier molecular orbital energy levels to enhance electron injection and reduce the steric effect to maximize electronic coupling. This review provides an overview of recent progress in azine- or azole-type N-heteroaromatics for use in structural engineering of high-mobility polymeric semiconductors. Various synthetic routes to these N-heteroaromatic building blocks and corresponding polymers are reviewed and may inspire new development in molecular engineering. Important structural features are discussed including their electronic structures and conformational preferences. This review also discusses how the molecular structures of these N-heteroaromatics are correlated to the device performances. Collectively, the N-heteroaromatics-containing semiconducting polymers are lead candidates for functional design for specific applications in modern organic electronics.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:AbstractThe development of conjugated polymers especially n‐type polymer semiconductors is powered by the design and synthesis of electron‐deficient building blocks. Herein, a strong acceptor building block with di‐metallaaromatic structure was designed and synthesized by connecting two electron‐deficient metallaaromatic units through a π‐conjugated bridge. Then, a double‐monomer polymerization methodology was developed for inserting it into conjugated polymer scaffolds to yield metallopolymers. The isolated well‐defined model oligomers indicated polymer structures. Kinetic studies based on nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopies shed light on the polymerization process. Interestingly, the resulted metallopolymers with dπ–pπ conjugations are very promising electron transport layer materials which can boost photovoltaic performance of an organic solar cell, with power conversion efficiency up to 18.28 % based on the PM6 : EH‐HD‐4F non‐fullerene system. This work not only provides a facile route to construct metallaaromatic conjugated polymers with various functional groups, but also discovers their potential applications for the first time.

Abstract:Thiophene-pyrazine-thiophene building blocks with carboxamide or carbamate substituents were synthesized and their crystal structures were compared. The carboxamide substituted building block formed intermolecular hydrogen bonds. It showed twisted conformations and a herringbone packing in single crystal. The carbamate substituted building block formed intramolecular resonance-assisted hydrogen bonds (RAHBs) and the hydrogen bonds enabled a co-planar structure, an extended -conjugation, and a tight lamella arrangement in single crystal. The conjugated polymers based on two building blocks were also synthesized. The hydrogen bonding caused significant differences in the optical, redox, and photovoltaic properties of polymers. The solar cells based on the polymers as electron donors and Y6 as acceptor were studied. The devices based on the PC-BDT2 which had the intramolecular hydrogen bonds showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.9%, while the devices based on the PI-BDT which possessed the intermolecular hydrogen bonds gave a PCE of 0.1%.

Abstract:Functional poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) bearing different azobenzene pendants were synthesized in desirable yields and molecular weight by using organorhodium complexes [Rh(diene)Cl]2 as catalysts. The structure of the derived azobenzene-functionalized PPAs was characterized by NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopic techniques. Their photoinduced isomerization behavior was monitored with UV–visible spectroscopy. The thermal stability was evaluated by TGA technique. Polarized optical microscope (POM) observations indicated that the PPAs constructed by linking azobenzene moieties via a longer flexible alkyl spacer to PPA backbone showed typical liquid-crystalline property and the mesophase was assigned to SmA phase. Their phase transition behaviors were further investigated by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurements. The molecular packing modes were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and theoretical simulation. These results revealed some details about the interactions between the polymer backbone, flexible alkyl spacer, and azobenzene functional moiety, which are constructive to design and synthesize novel functional conjugated polymers.
Incorporation of Electron-Rich Indacenodithiophene Units into the Backbone of 2,6-Azulene-Based Conjugated Polymers for Proton-Responsive Materials and p-Type Polymeric Semiconductors

Abstract:The 2,6-azulene unit is one of the most promising moieties for constructing organic conjugated materials. Herein, we reported the design and synthesis of 2,6-azulene-based conjugated copolymers P(AzIDT-C6), P(AzIDT-PhC6), and P(AzIDTT-PhC6) containing electron-rich indacenodithiophene (IDT) units. Because of the electron-rich features of IDT moieties, all polymers can be easily protonated in both solution and solid state. The protonation states can reach saturation with as little as 0.5% volume ratio of trifluoroacetic acid in solution accompanied by a substantial red-shift (>250 nm) in the UV–vis–NIR absorption spectra, which is the most sensitive proton responsiveness among reported azulene-based polymers. The proton responsiveness of these polymers in thin films is shown to be dynamically reversible with the color changing between deep blue (neutral state) and colorless (protonated state) due to shifting of the absorption bands between the visible and near-infrared regions. Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments reveal that the protonated polymers can be further oxidized to form radical cations with strong EPR signals. A membrane containing 3 wt % P(AzIDTT-PhC6) in Nafion shows a 72.2% higher conductivity than Nafion at 125 °C and 0% relative humidity, implying the potential application of these polymers in polymer electrolyte membranes. Preliminary organic field-effect transistor studies suggest that all conjugated polymers investigated display typical p-channel transport behavior with hole mobilities up to 0.46 cm2 V–1 s–1, demonstrating that the 2,6-azulene-based conjugated copolymers can behave as p-type semiconducting materials. Our work indicates that the incorporation of electron-rich large π-conjugated units into 2,6-azulene-based conjugated polymers is an effective strategy to develop highly sensitive proton-responsive materials and high-performance hole-transporting semiconductors.

Abstract:This paper reviews the research progress of conjugated polymers containing nitrogen-nitrogen double-bond bridges,for example,azobenzene and azopyrrole compounds and their derivatives.The trans form of the azobenzene molecule has a planar structure,whereas in the cis form of azobenzene,phenyl rings are twisted around the C—N bonds.The π-conjugated structure of the azobenzene is affected by the substitution of the phenyl ring,which gives rise to the variation of the bond lengths and bond angles.The measured conductivity showed a distinct difference in the trans form and the cis forms of azobenzene.These apparent changes in conductivity were attributed to the switching of height of the molecules rather than to an internal structural modification leading to a modification of resistance.The insertion of an azo group between heterocyclic rings pronounces the complex exhibiting a broader absorption band and a lower optical band gap compared to azobenzene.Consequently,the heterocyclic azo conjugated dye is an excellent candidate to be used as the photoactive material for the bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices.The conductivity and synthetic methods of conjugated azo polymers are described.The present research situation of electrical and photonic conductivity of azobenzene and our perspectives of the future development of conjugated azo containing polymer are also presented.
Unveiling the Effects of Interchain Hydrogen Bonds on Solution Gelation and Mechanical Properties of Diarylfluorene-Based Semiconductor Polymers

Abstract:The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures, rheology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μ J/cm 2 , suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.

First Hydrogen-Bonding-Induced Self-Assembled Aggregates Of A Polyfluorene Derivative

Abstract:A convenient approach to a novel polyfluorene derivative (P1) with hydrogen-bonding interactions and another derivative P2 without hydrogen-bonding interactions has been developed. The structure of polymers P1 and P2 is verified by FT-IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, and elemental analysis. The investigation demonstrates that the intramolecular and intermolecular H-bonding interactions play an important role in the optical properties of PI in the dilute solution and in films. P1 emits different light in dilute solutions (blue color) and in solid states (yellowish-orange) under the irradiation of UV light. The time-resolved PL decay dynamics also demonstrate the existence of such interactions in P1. However, this phenomenon is not observed in another polymer (P2) without hydrogen-bonding interactions. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) results of P1 at solid states reveal the formation of entangled nanostructures induced though the hydrogen-bonding interactions. Therefore, the investigation shows that the interaction between the nitrogen and the hydroxy group at the 9-position effectively affects the optical properties of P1, which might provide a new approach to control over molecular ordering through interchain interactions, especially the hydrogen bonding.
