Abstract:Supramolecular complexes system is a novel and charming domain because of its rapid development and widespread applications in different areas. Self-assembly, as a main method of forming supramolecular complexes, is significant to polymeric materials and life sciences. Hydrogen-bonded complexes are classified according to their multiplicity and associating ways in this article. The self-assembly properties and research of hydrogen-bonded complexes are comprehensively reviewed. Meanwhile, theoretical studies on hydrogen-bonded complexes of our research group are introduced.

Abstract:The application of hydrogen bonding recognition in designing and controlling over supramolecular polymers has attracted great attention recently due to the influence of hydrogen bonds on the thermodynamic properties, microscopic self-assembling, crystallizing and liquid crystallizing behaviors of such polymers. In this paper, the types and characters of hydrogen bonding systems, and the influences of molecular structures and intermolecular hydrogen bonds on the stability of hydrogen bonding systems are described systematically. The, recent applications of hydrogen bonding recognition systems, including carboxylic acids and pyridine based system, nucleobase derived system and quadrupolar hydrogen bonding system, in supramolecular polymers are introduced. The synthetic methods, structures, properties and functions of hydrogen bonded supramolecular polymers are mainly addressed.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers formed through noncovalent interactions have attracted great attention recently due to their special structures and properties. The supramolecular chemistry, hydrogen bond and supramolecular polymers are introduced. Supramolecular polymers formed by different hydrogen-bonded systems, including multiple-hydrogen-bonded interactions, hydrogen bond formed from carboxylic acids and pyridines, and multiple interactions including hydrogen bond and other noncovalent bond, are reviewed in detail. The research status quo and the perspective of supramolecular polymers are discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen bonding principles are at the core of supramolecular design. This overview features a discussion relating molecular structure to hydrogen bond strengths, highlighting the following electronic effects on hydrogen bonding: electronegativity, steric effects, electrostatic effects, π‐conjugation, and network cooperativity. Historical developments, along with experimental and computational efforts, leading up to the birth of the hydrogen bond concept, the discovery of nonclassical hydrogen bonds (CH…O, OH…π, dihydrogen bonding), and the proposal of hydrogen bond design principles (e.g., secondary electrostatic interactions, resonance‐assisted hydrogen bonding, and aromaticity effects) are outlined. Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry combines the strength of molecular assembly via various molecular interactions. Hydrogen bonding facilitated self-assembly with the advantages of directionality, specificity, reversibility, and strength is a promising approach for constructing advanced supramolecules. There are still some challenges in hydrogen bonding based supramolecular polymers, such as complexity originating from tautomerism of the molecular building modules, the assembly process, and structure versatility of building blocks. In this review, examples are selected to give insights into multiple hydrogen bonding driven emerging supramolecular architectures. We focus on chiral supramolecular assemblies, multiple hydrogen bonding modules as stimuli responsive sources, interpenetrating polymer networks, multiple hydrogen bonding assisted organic frameworks, supramolecular adhesives, energy dissipators, and quantitative analysis of nano-adhesion. The applications in biomedical materials are focused with detailed examples including drug design evolution for myotonic dystrophy, molecular assembly for advanced drug delivery, an indicator displacement strategy for DNA detection, tissue engineering, and self-assembly complexes as gene delivery vectors for gene transfection. In addition, insights into the current challenges and future perspectives of this field to propel the development of multiple hydrogen bonding facilitated supramolecular materials are proposed.

Abstract:Halogen–water–hydrogen bridges (XWH bridges), in which one hydrogen bond (H-bond) in a traditional water-mediated H-bond bridge is replaced by a halogen bond (X-bond), is a novel mode of interaction for water in biological molecules. In this study, we investigate several protein–halogenated ligand complexes using a two-layer quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) ONIOM method. Analysis of the geometric characteristics and energy behaviors of the complexes, together with the AIM results, indicate that XWH bridges are present in these systems. Furthermore, our investigations show that XWH bridges can have an important role in ligand recognition and binding.

Abstract:The hydrogen bond represents a fundamental interaction widely existing in nature, which plays a key role in chemical, physical and biochemical processes. However, hydrogen bond dynamics at the molecular level are extremely difficult to directly investigate. Here, in this work we address direct electrical measurements of hydrogen bond dynamics at the single-molecule and single-event level on the basis of the platform of molecular nanocircuits, where a quadrupolar hydrogen bonding system is covalently incorporated into graphene point contacts to build stable supramolecule-assembled single-molecule junctions. The dynamics of individual hydrogen bonds in different solvents at different temperatures are studied in combination with density functional theory. Both experimental and theoretical results consistently show a multimodal distribution, stemming from the stochastic rearrangement of the hydrogen bond structure mainly through intermolecular proton transfer and lactam-lactim tautomerism. This work demonstrates an approach of probing hydrogen bond dynamics with single-bond resolution, making an important contribution to broad fields beyond supramolecular chemistry.

In particular, the developments of various folded, helical and extended secondary structures from aromatic backbones driven by different noncovalent forces (including hydrogen bonding, donor–acceptor, solvophobicity, and dimerization of conjugated radical cations) and solution-phase supramolecular organic frameworks driven by hydrophobically initiated aromatic stacking in the cavity of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) are highlighted.

Abstract:Constructing well-organized organic frameworks with tailor-made functionalities potentially boost multi-domain applications. Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) is a category of general and weak intermolecular interactions when compared with covalent bonding or metal-ligand coordination. Porous frameworks mainly assembled by H-bonding (named hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, HOFs) are intrinsically capable of decomposing and regenerating, a distinctive advantage to improve their processability while expanding the applicability. This paper summarizes the basic building concepts of HOFs, including feasible hydrogen bonded motifs, effective molecular structures, and their emerging applications.

Abstract:Non-covalent interactions have gained increasing attention for use as a driving force to fabricate various supramolecular architectures, exhibiting great potential in crystal and materials engineering and supramolecular chemistry. As one of the most powerful non-covalent bonds, the halogen bond has recently received increasing attention in functional nanomaterial design. The present review describes the latest studies based on halogen bonding induced self-assembly and its applications. Due to the high directionality and controllable interaction strength, halogen bonding can provide a facile platform for the design and synthesis of a myriad of nanomaterials. In addition, both the fundamental aspects and the real engineering applications are discussed, which encompass molecular recognition and sensing, organocatalysis, and controllable multifunctional materials and surfaces.

Abstract:A self-complementary hydrogen-bonding recognition unit—2,5-bis(alkylamino)-1,4-benzoquinone has been synthesized and studied. The formation of hydrogen bond in both solid and solution state has been further investigated by means of FTIR, 1H NMR and UV-visible spectra, as well as X-ray diffraction. It can be concluded from the obtained results that the molecular complexes of this kind of compounds have a ribbon-like backbone which plays an important role in keeping the layer supramolecular structure.

Abstract:Abstract Halogen bonding is emerging as a significant driving force for supramolecular self-assembly and has aroused great interest during the last two decades. Among the various halogen-bonding donors, we take notice of the ability of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-DITFB) to co-crystallize with diverse halogen-bonding acceptors in the range from neutral Lewis bases (nitrogen-containing compounds, N-oxides, chalcogenides, aromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic complexes) to anions (halide ions, thio/selenocyanate ions and tetrahedral oxyanions), leading to a great variety of supramolecular architectures such as discrete assemblies, 1D infinite chains and 2D/3D networks. Some of them act as promising functional materials (e.g. fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical waveguide, laser, non-linear optics, dielectric and magnetism) and soft materials (e.g. liquid crystal and supramolecular gel). Here we focus on the supramolecular structures of multicomponent complexes and their related physicochemical properties, highlight representative examples and show clearly the main directions that remain to be developed and improved in this area. From the point of view of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, the complexes summarized here should give helpful information for further design and investigation of the elusive category of halogen-bonding supramolecular functional materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are, in broad brushstrokes, self-assembled structures built up from small building blocks via the use of noncovalent interactions. In favorable cases, supramolecular polymers embody the best features of covalent polymers while displaying unique reversibility, responsiveness, adaptiveness, and stability. This has made them of interest across a wide variety of fields, from molecular devices to sensors, drug delivery, cell recognition, and environmentally friendly materials systems. This review is concerned with the determinants that underlie supramolecular polymer construction, specifically the driving forces that have been exploited to create them. To date, nearly the full range of known noncovalent interactions ( e.g. , hydrogen-bonding, electrostatic interactions, charge transfer effects, and metal coordination, among others) has been exploited to create supramolecular polymers. Typically, one or more types of interactions is used to link appropriately designed monomers. The choice of noncovalent interaction can have a significant influence on the structure and function of the resulting supramolecular polymers. Understanding the connections between the forces responsible for the assembly of supramolecular polymers and their properties provides the foundation for further advances in this fast-moving field. Given the above, this review will the discuss recent progress in the rapidly advancing field of supramolecular polymers organized by the types of underlying interactions. An overview of future challenges and opportunities for supramolecular polymers, including their formation, characterization, and applications, is also provided.

Abstract:The nearly linear relationship between hydrogen-bond strength at the CCSD(T)/Aug-cc-pVTZ level and the electron density at the bond critical point in the atoms-in-molecules theory provides a practical means of calculating the hydrogen-bond strength in liquid water. A statistical analysis of the hydrogen-bonds obtained from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations shows that the strengths of hydrogen bonds in liquid water conform to a Gaussian distribution. Considering supercooled (250K) water to have a fully coordinated (icelike) local tetrahedral configuration, we show that the local structure of liquid water is partly distorted tetrahedral in normal liquid water and even in superheated water.

Abstract:The prototypical Hydrogen bond in water dimer and Hydrogen bonds in the protonated water dimer, in other small molecules, in water cyclic clusters, and in ice, covering a wide range of bond strengths, are theoretically investigated by first-principles calculations based on the Density Functional Theory, considering a standard Generalized Gradient Approximation functional but also, for the water dimer, hybrid and van-der-Waals corrected functionals. We compute structural, energetic, and electrostatic (induced molecular dipole moments) properties. In particular, Hydrogen bonds are characterized in terms of differential electron densities distributions and profiles, and of the shifts of the centres of Maximally localized Wannier Functions. The information from the latter quantities can be conveyed into a single geometric bonding parameter that appears to be correlated to the Mayer bond order parameter and can be taken as an estimate of the covalent contribution to the Hydrogen bond. By considering the cyclic water hexamer and the hexagonal phase of ice we also elucidate the importance of cooperative/anticooperative effects in Hydrogen-bonding formation.

Abstract:Hydrogen‐bonded frameworks have garnered significant attention due to their flexible structures with tailored porosity, making them a promising class of porous framework materials. However, the direct synthesis of hydrogen‐bonded frameworks with specific functions is highly challenging due to the unpredictable formation of hydrogen‐bonded frameworks. In response, postsynthetic modification has emerged as a potent strategy to imbue desired functions into hydrogen‐bonded frameworks. Recent advances have demonstrated the effectiveness of postsynthetic modification in hydrogen‐bonded frameworks for studying their mechanical, luminescent, electrochemical, and chiral properties. In this concept, we comprehensively summarize the methodologies and outcomes of postsynthetic modification to hydrogen‐bonded frameworks, providing a highlight of this exciting research area.
