Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Abstract:Three dimensional responsive structures have high value for the application of responsive hydrogels in various fields such as micro fluid control, tissue engineering and micro robot. Whereas various hydrogels with stimuli-responsive behaviors have been developed, designing and fabricating of the three dimensional responsive structures remain challenging. We develop a temperature responsive double network hydrogel with novel fabrication methods to assemble the complex three dimensional responsive structures. The shape changing behavior of the structures can be significantly increased by building blocks with various responsiveness. Mechanical instability is built into the structure with the proper design and enhance the performance of the structure. Finite element simulation are conducted to guide the design and investigate the responsive behavior of the hydrogel structures.

Abstract:Inspired by the assembly of Lego toys, hydrogel building blocks with heterogeneous responsiveness are assembled utilizing macroscopic supramolecular recognition as the adhesion force. The Lego hydrogel provides 3D transformation upon pH variation. After disassembly of the building blocks by changing the oxidation state, they can be re-assembled into a completely new shape.

Abstract:In this review we intend to provide a relatively comprehensive summary of the work of supramolecular hydrogelators after 2004 and to put emphasis particularly on the applications of supramolecular hydrogels/hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials. After a brief introduction of methods for generating supramolecular hydrogels, we discuss supramolecular hydrogelators on the basis of their categories, such as small organic molecules, coordination complexes, peptides, nucleobases, and saccharides. Following molecular design, we focus on various potential applications of supramolecular hydrogels as molecular biomaterials, classified by their applications in cell cultures, tissue engineering, cell behavior, imaging, and unique applications of hydrogelators. Particularly, we discuss the applications of supramolecular hydrogelators after they form supramolecular assemblies but prior to reaching the critical gelation concentration because this subject is less explored but may hold equally great promise for helping address fundamental questions about the mechanisms or the consequences of the self-assembly of molecules, including low molecular weight ones. Finally, we provide a perspective on supramolecular hydrogelators. We hope that this review will serve as an updated introduction and reference for researchers who are interested in exploring supramolecular hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials for addressing the societal needs at various frontiers.

This material has many potential application areas , such as smart gel , tissue engineering , etc. The design and preparation of low molecular weight organic gelators as well as understanding of the mechanism of the gelation process have attracted great attention recently and become the key point for supramolecular hydrogel . In this paper , basic concepts of supramolecular hydrogel are introduced firstly. The structural motifs and functions of the supramolecular hydrogels are reviewed in detail . Finally , the current research and perspective of supramolecular hydrogel are discussed.

Abstract:Supramolecular hydrogels bound by hydrogen bonding, host-guest, hydrophobic, and other non-covalent interactions are among the most attractive biomaterials available. Supramolecular hydrogels have attracted extensive attention due to their inherent dynamic reversibility, self-healing, stimuli-response, excellent biocompatibility, and near-physiological environment. However, the inherent contradiction between non-covalent interactions and mechanical strength makes the practical application of supramolecular hydrogels a great challenge. This review describes the mechanical strength of hydrogels mediated by supramolecular interactions, and focuses on the potential strategies for enhancing the mechanical strength of supramolecular hydrogels and illustrates their applications in related fields, such as flexible electronic sensors, wound dressings, and three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds. Finally, the current problems and future research prospects of supramolecular hydrogels are discussed. This review is expected to provide insights that will motivate more advanced research on supramolecular hydrogels.

Abstract:DNA-based supramolecular hydrogels are important and promising biomaterials for various applications due to their inherent biocompatibility and tunable physicochemical properties. The three-dimensional supramolecular matrix of DNA formed by non-covalently dynamic cross-linking provides exceptional adaptability, self-healing, injectable and responsive properties for hydrogels. In addition, DNA hydrogels are also ideal bio-scaffold materials owing to their tissue-like mechanics and intrinsic biological functions. Technically, DNA can assemble into supramolecular networks by pure complementary base pairing; it can also be combined with other building blocks to construct hybrid hydrogels. This review focuses on the development and construction strategies of DNA hydrogels. Assembly and synthesis methods, diverse responsiveness and biomedical applications are summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of DNA-based supramolecular hydrogels are discussed.

Abstract:Supramolecular hydrogels based on cellulose attract increasing attention because of their novel structures and broad potential applications. In this review, hydrogels composed of cellulose are summarized according to category of supramolecular interactions in the networks including hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, host-guest interactions, and others. Supramolecular cellulose-based hydrogels constructed by noncovalent bonding usually exhibit environmental friendliness, designing flexibility and diverse functions, and their properties are variable with incorporating different interactions in hydrogel networks. Moreover, with proper structures and networks, the supramolecular cellulose-based hydrogels are adaptable in diverse fields of research and practical applications, such as self-healing, shape memory, drug delivery, and some other renewable/sustainable materials. The future developments and challenges of the supramolecular hydrogels based on cellulose are discussed as well.

Abstract:This Feature Article summarizes the design and synthesis of supramolecular hydrogels based on nanofibers of self-assembled small bioactive molecules. The hydrogels show responses to molecular recognition and find applications in wound healing, toxin removal, and drug release. We also described our recent results of using an enzyme or enzymatic switch to trigger or regulate the self-assembly of small molecules for the generation of nanofibers and the subsequent hydrogelation. The results in this Feature Article clearly indicate that supramolecular hydrogels, as an expression of the self-assembly of molecules in water, promise a broad range of biomaterials and therapeutics.

Abstract:Supramolecular hydrogels (SMHs) are three-dimensional networks filled with a large amount of water. The crosslinking force in the 3D network is always constructed by relatively weak and dynamic non-covalent interactions, and thus SMHs usually possess extremely high susceptibility to external environment and can show extraordinary stimuli-responsive, self-healing or other attractive properties. However, the overall crosslinking force in hydrogel networks is difficult to flexibly modulate, and this leads to limited functions of the SMHs. In this regard, hierarchical hydrogen bonds, that is, the mixture of relatively strong and relatively weak hydrogen bonds, are used herein as crosslinking force for the hydrogel preparation. The ratio of strong and weak hydrogen bonds can be finely tuned to tailor the properties of resultant gels. Thus, by delicate manipulation of the overall crosslinking force in the system, a hydrogel with multiple (thermal, pH and NIR light) responsiveness, autonomous self-healing property and interesting temperature dependent, reversible adhesion behavior is obtained. This kind of hierarchical hydrogen bond manipulation is proved to be a general method for multiple-functionality hydrogel preparation, and the resultant material shows potential for a range of applications.

Abstract:DNA supramolecular hydrogels are hydrogels cross-linked through DNA hybridization. They have attracted wide attention due to their great molecular permeability, biocompatibility, degradability, thixotropy, and self-healing properties, which make them very useful in cell culture, tissue engineering, and 3D printing. The designability and responsiveness of DNA endows these hydrogels with specific stimuli responsiveness, thus enhancing their utility for more applications, e.g., detection devices and shape-memory materials. In this review, we outlined and discussed the development of responsive DNA supramolecular hydrogels, and their applications have also been summarized.

Abstract:Supramolecular non‐covalent interaction is the main base of living functions of creatures. It has become a unique strategy for constructing functional materials. The self‐assembled principle of supramolecular hydrogels, and related outstanding bio‐applications for drug delivery, implantable devices and substitutions, tissue engineering, micro‐fluidic devices, and biosensors are summarized by inspiration from humans, animals, and plants. Nature offers a wealth of opportunities to solve scientific and technological issues based on its unique structures and function. The dynamic non‐covalent interaction is considered to be the main base of living functions of creatures including humans, animals, and plants. Supramolecular hydrogels formed by non‐covalent bonding interactions has become a unique platform for constructing promising materials for medicine, energy, electronic, and biological substitute. In this review, the self‐assemble principle of supramolecular hydrogels is summarized. Next, the stimulation of external environment that triggers the assembly or disassembly of supramolecular hydrogels are recapitulated, including temperature, mechanics, light, pH, ions, etc. The main applications of bioinspired supramolecular hydrogels in terms of bionic objects including humans, animals, and plants are also described. Although so many efforts are done for revealing the synergized mechanism of the function and non‐covalent interactions on the supramolecular hydrogel, the complexity and variability between stimulus and non‐covalent bonding in the supramolecular system still require impeccable theories. As an outlook, the bioinspired supramolecular hydrogel is just beginning to exhibit its great potential in human life, offering significant opportunities in drug delivery and screening, implantable devices and substitutions, tissue engineering, micro‐fluidic devices, and biosensors.

Abstract:The unique network characteristics and stimuli responsiveness of supramolecular hydrogels have rendered them highly advantageous in the field of wound dressings, showcasing unprecedented potential. However, there are few reports on a comprehensive review of supramolecular hydrogel dressings for wound repair and hemostasis. This review first introduces the major cross-linking methods for supramolecular hydrogels, which includes hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, host-guest interactions, metal ligand coordination and some other interactions. Then, we review the advanced materials reported in recent years and then summarize the basic principles of each cross-linking method. Next, we classify the network structures of supramolecular hydrogels before outlining their forming process and propose their potential future directions. Furthermore, we also discuss the raw materials, structural design principles, and material characteristics used to achieve the advanced functions of supramolecular hydrogels, such as antibacterial function, tissue adhesion, substance delivery, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions, cell behavior regulation, angiogenesis promotion, hemostasis and other innovative functions in recent years. Finally, the existing problems as well as future development directions of the cross-linking strategy, network design, and functions in wound repair and hemostasis of supramolecular hydrogels are discussed. This review is proposed to stimulate further exploration of supramolecular hydrogels on wound repair and hemostasis by researchers in the future.

Abstract:<p>Supramolecular hydrogels display unique dynamic features such as self-healing and injectability which are endowed by their non-covalent crosslinking. These extraordinary dynamic properties enable them to be broadly applied in various fields, but also decrease their mechanical strength. This inherent contradiction between mechanical strength and dynamic features has posed great challenge to their practical applications. This article provides an overview of emerging techniques for mechanical strengthening of supramolecular hydrogels with preserved dynamic features. Inspired by the "strong means slow" principle of transient supramolecular networks, particular focus is placed on how the exchange kinetics of the supramolecular crosslinkers can be engineered to tune their mechanical strength. Some other effective strengthening strategies are also reviewed, which are usually combined to realize the coexistence of mechanical strength and dynamics. Meanwhile, we point out the future development of supramolecular hydrogels with unique mechanical properties and their potential challenges.</p>

Abstract:AbstractFunctional soft materials, especially hydrogels have been widely developed to achieve various soft structures and machines. However, synthetic hydrogels commonly show formula‐dependent mechanical properties to fulfill the requirements of mechanical elasticity, stiffness, toughness, and tearing‐resistance for adapting to complex application scenario. Inspired by heterostructures and materials found in nature such as leaves and insect wings, a sequential photopolymerization process combined with site‐selective patterning exposure is reported to prepare programmable hydrogels with locally heterogeneous reinforcement skeletons, i.e., interpenetrating double networks. The heterogeneous interface between soft matrices and stiff skeletons is seamlessly interlocked through strong multiple hydrogen bonds induced by phase transition. By harnessing the size, shape, and distribution of the patterned stiff skeletons, a wide range of mechanical properties of hydrogels including modulus (0.32–5.92 MPa), toughness (0.15–18 kJ m−2), dissipated energy (1–100 kJ m−3), impact resistance, and mechanical anisotropy can be readily sculpted within one material system without needing design and optimization of the complex and elusive material formulation on demand. It is believed that this simple yet powerful method relying on heterogenous patterning would guide the development of functional hydrogel materials with programmable mechanical properties toward potential engineering applications, such as damping and flexible circuits.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels are a fascinating class of soft materials. Their gelators can self-assemble into nano- or micro-scale superstructures, such as fibers, ribbons, sheets and spheres in an appropriate solvent, thereby resulting in the formation of 3D networks. The dynamic and reversible nature of the non-covalent interactions that contribute to the formation of these network structures together gives these supramolecular gels the inherent ability to respond to external stimuli. However, the dynamic nature of supramolecular gels, which endows them with unique properties, makes their characterization diversified at the same time. Therefore, we present here a review summarizing various methods for characterizing supramolecular gels, including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, computational techniques, X-ray techniques, microscopy techniques, dynamic light scattering, thermal analysis, and rheology. Based on the gelation mechanisms and influencing factors of supramolecular gels, suitable and sufficient characterization methods should be carefully employed to make full use of their respective advantages to better investigate these materials.

Abstract:With the increased research on supramolecular hydrogels, many spectroscopic, diffraction, microscopic, and rheological techniques have been employed to better understand and characterize the material properties of these hydrogels. Specifically, spectroscopic methods are used to characterize the structure of supramolecular hydrogels on the atomic and molecular scales. Diffraction techniques rely on measurements of crystallinity and help in analyzing the structure of supramolecular hydrogels, whereas microscopy allows researchers to inspect these hydrogels at high resolution and acquire a deeper understanding of the morphology and structure of the materials. Furthermore, mechanical characterization is also important for the application of supramolecular hydrogels in different fields. This can be achieved through atomic force microscopy measurements where a probe interacts with the surface of the material. Additionally, rheological characterization can investigate the stiffness as well as the shear-thinning and self-healing properties of the hydrogels. Further, mechanical and surface characterization can be performed by micro-rheology, dynamic light scattering, and tribology methods, among others. In this review, we highlight state-of-the-art techniques for these different characterization methods, focusing on examples where they have been applied to supramolecular hydrogels, and we also provide future directions for research on the various strategies used to analyze this promising type of material.
