Abstract:The paper presents the sorts, features and applications of semiconductor all-optical switches. According to their structures, the switches can be divided into planar-type and waveguide-type. According to their operation principles, they can be divided into phase-shift-type and frequency-shift-type. Abstract:As the technology of intelligent substation is developed gradually, the significance of he Ethernet switch in the substation is obvious increasingly.Firstly, the learning and transmitting principle of Ethernet frame are introduced, then the network program of secondary system using the switch in the hierarchial structure is described. And then a detailed analysis of the VLAN, QoS, mirror and ring network is given, also the various technical application scheme are provided according to a variety of IED features and data flow characteristics. On the basis of the different business needs and different message types, the reasonable design of network topology and the flexible use of these switching technology , can support security, stability, reliable transmission of communication message in intelligent substation , therefore the whole substation becomes more strong.

Abstract:With fast development of the optical fiber technology, core routers face many great challenges, especially in the technology of switch fabrics. This paper mainly discusses the design of switch fabric in a gigabit core router named Tsinghua Core Router (TCR), which is our recent research project. This core router has 320 GB/s switch capacity, supporting 16 ports, each opening at 10 Gb/s (OC192c line rate). To achieve a high-speed and large-capacity switch fabric, this paper focuses on key technologies of supporting variable-length packets with a cell-based switch fabric, segmentation and reassembly, and multi-priority guarantee for various kinds of traffic with different QoS requirements. Through implementation and performance simulation, we demonstrate that the switch fabric can meet challenges of gigabit core routers, and provide better QoS control for Internet.

Abstract:We report a low-cost non-silicon-based fiber optic switch featuring a novel design of reflection cell, which is capable of ±5V pulse operation and self-latching. The switch prototypes were measured to have a switch time of 2.6ms, return loss of −54dB and a low insertion loss. Enabling technology is precision electrical discharge machining. The dynamic process of switching was analyzed using an FEA software ANSYS for design optimization. A reasonable agreement was obtained between the measurement and calculated results. The switch is scalable to 8×8 or above and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.
320-Gb/s Switch System to Guarantee QoS of Real-Time Traffic

Abstract:To provide QoS control for real time traffic in core routers, this paper designs and evaluates a 320 Gb/s switch system, which supports 16 line cards, each operating at OC192c line rate (10 Gb/s). This switch system contains a high performance switch fabric and supports variable-length IP packet interface. These two characters provide advantages over traditional switch fabrics with a cell interface. This switch system supports eight priorities to both unicast and multicast traffic. The highest priority with strict QoS guarantee is for real time traffic, and other seven lower priorities with weighted round-robin (WRR) service discipline are for other common data traffic. Through simulation under multi-priority burst traffic model, we demonstrate this switch system not only can provide excellent performance for real time traffic, but also can efficiently allocate bandwidth among all kinds of traffic. As a result, this switch system can serve as a key node in high-speed networks, and it can also meet the challenge of multimedia traffic to the next generation Internet.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the emergence of high-speed applications, demand for more bandwidth has increased exponentially in last a few years. To serve each user for his demand very fast processing and propagation of data is desired. These two requirements of high-speed communication can be fulfilled using optical fiber technology. In the same view in past many optical switch designs have emerged with their respective advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based switch incorporating arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) as wavelength router and fiber delay lines (FDL) to create optical buffer. Proposed switch design is compared with recent switch design and it is found that both in terms of BER and packet loss probability the performance of proposed design is much better in comparison to earlier designs.

Abstract:Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) represents the development trend of optical networks. Multi-granularity optical switching is the importantly physically supporting techniques for ASON to realize traffic engineering and quality of service(QoS). The type of node structure realizing multi-granularity optical swithing in ASON is put forward and a multi-granularity optical switch using this structure is developed. The software for controlling the node in ASON is compiled. The experimental research is carried out with campus network as signalling network and the data network is of mesh architecture, which is a typical architecture in ASON. The main functions of ASON are verified.

Abstract:Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is a promising technology for constructing high-speed large-capacity WDM switches, because it can switch fast, is scalable to large size and consumes little power. To take the full advantages of high-speed AWG, the routing control of a massive AWG-based switch should be as simple as possible. In this paper, we focus on the self-routing design of AWG-based switches with O(1) constant routing complexity and propose a novel construction of self-routing AWG switches that can guarantee the attractive nonblocking property for both the wavelength-to-wavelength and wavelength-to-fiber request models. It is expected that the proposed construction will be useful for the design and all-optical implementation of future ultra high-speed optical packet/burst switches.

Abstract:We report a fiber optic switch based on a novel MEMS technology allowing fast switch (<2 ms), excellent isolation (>50dB) and wide bandwidth. Each switch module consists of an electromagnetically actuated gold-coated silicon mirror rotating around a 100 mum diameter shaft and a miniature 5V driven coil. Enabling technology is precision EDM machining and laser cutting. The switch is scalable to 8 X 8 and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper proposes a three‐stage broadband packet switch architecture with more than 16,000 ports for a future central office. The switch is constructed by interconnecting many independent switch modules of small size which can be implemented using modifications of various well‐studied switch fabric designs. Channel grouping is used to provide multiple paths for each input‐output pair in order to decrease delay and increase throughput. We show that, for a given size, switch modules with channel grouping are simpler to realize than those without channel grouping. A datagram packet routeing approach is adopted in order to avoid table look‐up that would be required by virtual‐circuit routeing. Ways of preserving the sequence integrity of packets under this situation are presented. Performance analyses show that a 32,768 x 32,768 switch with acceptable performance can be constructed based on switch fabrics of no more than 128 ports.

Abstract:Abstract The access network is developing towards large capacity, wide-coverage, and low delay, which puts forward higher requirements for network structure and data exchange performance of optical access network equipment. In this paper, we have designed a high-speed optical network device with 40/10G TDM-PON. To effectively solve the problem of network switching capability in high-speed data transmission, we propose a low delay large capacity switching algorithm, which minimizes the network switching delay. We model the network by integer linear programming and simulate the network based on OMNeT++. The simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively solve the problem of network switching delay in the high-speed network environment.

Abstract:We propose a multifunctional optical switching unit based on the bidirectional liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) architecture. Add/drop, wavelength conversion, format conversion, and WDM multicast are experimentally demonstrated. Due to the bidirectional characteristic, the LCoS device cannot only multiplex the input signals, but also de-multiplex the converted signals. Dual-channel wavelength conversion and format conversion from 2 x 25Gbps differential quadrature phase-shift-keying (DQPSK) to 2 x 12.5Gbps differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in SOA is obtained with only one pump. One-to-six WDM multicast of 25Gbps DQPSK signals with two pumps is also achieved. All of the multicast channels are with a power penalty less than 1.1 dB at FEC threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). Abstract:This paper introduces the design of a PoS data switch chip in the MSTP on SDH to supply the flexible data services in the transport and access equipment. The structure of the chip is based on a shared-memory switch structure, and an advanced pipeline technology is used to improve the switch capacity of the chip. This chip provides QoS guarantee and implements multicast capacity, and it can be used in the SDH transport and access equipment. It provides a simple and high-level efficient solution for the transportation of data services on SDH.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe Apollo, to the best of our knowledge, the world's first large-scale production deployment of optical circuit switches (OCSes) for datacenter networking. We will first describe the infrastructure challenges and use cases that motivated optical switching inside datacenters. We then delve into the requirements of OCSes for datacenter applications: balancing cost, port count, switching time, and optical performance, which drive design choices and implementation details of our internally developed 3D MEMS-based OCS. To enable the Apollo optical switching layer, we employ circulators to realize bidirectional links through the OCS, effectively doubling the OCS radix. The OCS and circulator design choices were critical for meeting network bandwidth, scale, and cost targets. We review the critical co-design of WDM transceiver technology for these OCS plus circulator-based bidirectional links and their corresponding physical impairments, delivered over four generations/speeds of optical interconnect. Finally, we conclude with thoughts on future directions in hardware development and associated applications.

Abstract:Space division multiplexing using multicore fibers is becoming a more and more promising technology. In space-division multiplexing fiber network, the reconfigurable switch is one of the most critical components in network nodes. In this paper we for the first time demonstrate reconfigurable space-division multiplexing switching using silicon photonic integrated circuit, which is fabricated on a novel silicon-on-insulator platform with buried Al mirror. The silicon photonic integrated circuit is composed of a 7 × 7 switch and low loss grating coupler array based multicore fiber couplers. Thanks to the Al mirror, grating couplers with ultra-low coupling loss with optical multicore fibers is achieved. The lowest total insertion loss of the silicon integrated circuit is as low as 4.5 dB, with low crosstalk lower than −30 dB. Excellent performances in terms of low insertion loss and low crosstalk are obtained for the whole C-band. 1 Tb/s/core transmission over a 2-km 7-core fiber and space-division multiplexing switching is demonstrated successfully. Bit error rate performance below 10−9 is obtained for all spatial channels with low power penalty. The proposed design can be easily upgraded to reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer capable of switching several multicore fibers.
