Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR , H-1 NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.

Abstract:The synthetic routes and materials properties of polyethylene/clay nanocomposites are reviewed. Intercalated or exfoliated nanocomposites can be prepared by melt-intercalation and in-situ coordination polymerization. The well dispersion of nanoscale inorganic fillers in polyethylene matrix promotes several properties of the material including improved stiffness,increased flame retardancy and better gas barrier property.
The preparation of an elastomer/silicate layer nanocompound with an exfoliated structure and a strong ionic interfacial interaction by utilizing an elastomer latex containing pyridine groups.

Abstract:A great variety of polymer/layered silicate (PLS) nanocomposites have been reported, however, there are few exfoliated PLS nanocomposites and their inorganic-organic interfaces are still a great problem, especially for the elastomers. In this research, a kind of exfoliated elastomer/silicate layer nanocompound was prepared and proved by XRD and TEM, in which 10 phr Na(+) - montmorillonite was dispersed in butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridine rubber by latex compounding method with acidic flocculants. Moreover, a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) suggested a strong interfacial interaction (interaction parameter B(H) = 4.91) between the silicate layers and macromolecules in addition to the weak inorganic-organic interfacial interaction, and solid state (15)N NMR indicated the formation of a strong ionic interface through the acidifying pyridine. Subsequently, a remarkable improvement of the dispersing morphology, mechanical performance and gas barrier property appeared, compared to that using calcium ion flocculants. This supports the formation of an exfoliated structure and an improved interfacial interaction.
The Role of Exfoliated Kaolinite on Crystallinity, Ion Conductivity, Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Poly(ethylene Oxide)/kaolinite Composites

Abstract:Kaolinite particles were exfoliated by the intercalation and subsequent deintercalation of urea in the interlayer of kaolinite. The exfoliated kaolinite particles were used to prepare a novel poly(ethylene oxide)/kaolinite (PEO/kaolinite) composite. The resulting exfoliated kaolinite and PEO/kaolinite composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ion conductivity test, thermogravimetry (TG) analysis and mechanical test. XRD results showed that the 001 diffraction of kaolinite in the XRD pattern almost disappeared after exfoliation treatment. FTIR spectra showed that the inner surface hydroxyls of kaolinite decreased after exfoliating kaolinite layers. SEM micrographs confirmed the exfoliation of kaolinite particles and showed a good dispersion of exfoliated kaolinite in PEO matrix. A gradual decrease in PEO crystallinity in PEO/kaolinite composites was observed with the increment of the exfoliated kaolinite concentration by DSC test. The ion conductivity of the composites gradually increased with exfoliated kaolinite content and reached 6.1 × 10−5 (S/cm) at a filler concentration of 20 wt%. The formation of amorphous region around the exfoliated kaolinite was beneficial for the Li+ ion conduction. Thermogravimetry analysis showed that the decomposition temperature of PEO matrix at weight loss of 10 and 50 wt% was increased when exfoliated kaolinite was introduced into PEO matrix. In addition, the mechanical properties of PEO matrix were also enhanced when exfoliated kaolinite content in PEO matrix was no more than 15 wt%.
The Role of Halloy Site on Crystallinity, Ion Conductivity, Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Poly(ethylene-Oxide)/halloysite Nanocomposites

Abstract:Halloysite nanotubes were applied as an inorganic filler to prepare poly(ethylene-oxide)/halloysite (PEO/halloysite) nanocomposites for the purpose of increasing the ion conductivity of PEO matrix. The resulting PEO/halloysite nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ion conductivity test, thermogravimetry analysis (TG) and mechanical properties test. SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed the good dispersion of halloysite nanotubes in PEO matrix. FTIR spectroscopy showed that the interaction between PEO and halloysite changed the ether oxygen vibrational modes of PEO. XRD and DSC results indicated that the PEO crystallinity gradually decreased with the increment of halloysite concentration. Meanwhile, the reduced PEO crystallinity promoted the improvement of ion conductivity and the maximum value (3.8 × 10−5 S/cm) appeared at a halloysite concentration of 20 wt%. The formation of amorphous region around halloysite is beneficial for the Li+ ion conduction. Furthermore, the tensile strength of PEO/halloysite nanocomposites was enhanced when halloysite was introduced into the polymer matrix with filler loading no more than 10 wt%.
Preparation of Poly(Phenylene Oxide)/Polyamide-6 Nanocomposites with High Tensile Strength and Excellent Impact Performance

Abstract:Organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) was introduced into SEBS-g-MA toughened poly(phenylene oxide)/polyamide-6 (PPO/PA6) blends simply by melt extrusion. The effects of OMMT on morphology, rheology, and mechanical behaviors of toughened PPO/PA6 nanocomposites were studied by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, capillary rheometer and mechanical tests. The addition of OMMT could decrease the size of dispersed PPO domains in PA6 matrix and melt viscosity of the toughened PPO/PA6 nanocomposites. Besides, exfoliated OMMT also brought significant improvement of tensile properties and heat deflection temperature (HDT), simultaneously. For nanocomposites with exfoliated OMMT, OMMT induced more coreshell toughening particles with the optimized size, and thus, elastomer-OMMT synergistic toughening was achieved in the PPO/PA6 nanocomposites. Consequently, PPO/PA6 nanocomposites with high tensile strength, excellent impact performance, improved HDT, and good processability were obtained.
Preparation and characterization of poly(propylene carbonate)/montmorillonite nanocomposites by solution intercalation

Abstract:Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) is a new biodegradable aliphatic polycarbonate. However, the poor thermal stability and low glass transition temperatures (Tg) have limited its applications. To improve the thermal properties of PPC, organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) was mixed with PPC by a solution intercalation method to produce nanocomposites. An intercalated-and-flocculated structure of PPC/OMMT nanocomposites was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermal and mechanical properties of PPC/OMMT nanocomposites were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), and electronic tensile tester. Due to the nanometer-sized dispersion of layered silicate in polymer matrix, PPC/OMMT nanocomposites exhibit improved thermal and mechanical properties than pure PPC. When the OMMT content is 4wt%, the PPC/OMMT nanocomposite shows the best thermal and mechanical properties. These results indicate that nanocomposition is an efficient and convenient method to improve the properties of PPC.

Abstract:Ethylene-octene copolymer (POE)-based nanocomposites were prepared from POE or maleic anhydride grafted POE with organo-modified montmorillonite (OMT) using melt blending technique. Their morphology, flammability, and crystallization behavior were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cone calorimeter, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). XRD and TEM studies confirmed the intercalation of clay layers within the POE matrix whereas the exfoliation throughout the maleated POE matrix. Cone calorimetry results exhibited that the reduction in heat release rate of exfoliated maleated-POE/OMT nanocomposite was greater than that of intercalated POE/OMT nanocomposite. The DSC results suggested that the nonisothermal kinetics crystallization of the exfoliated nanocomposite corresponded to tridimensional growth with heterogeneous nucleation. POLYM. Abstract:Polylactide (PLA)/poly(ethylene-co-octene)(POE) blends with various contents of nano-SiO2 were prepared via melt mixing. The structure and properties of the PLA/POE/nano-SiO2 ternary composites were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometry, and tensile testing. The particle size of the dispersed POE phase first decreased with increasing nano-SiO2 content and then remained constant. Nano-SiO2 played an important role in the heterogeneous nucleation of PLA, which resulted in an increase of the crystallinity of PLA. The synergistic effect of both POE and nano-SiO2 can significantly improve the toughness, strength, and modulus of PLA. When the ratio of PLA/POE/nano-SiO2 was 90/10/0.5, PLA/POE/nano-SiO2 composite had the best comprehensive properties.
Morphology, rheology, and mechanical properties of polylactide/ poly(ethylene-co-octene) blends

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA)/poly(ethylene-co-octene) (POE) blends containing ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (EGMA) as a compatibilizer were prepared by melt blending. An immiscible, two-phase structure with POE dispersed in the PLA matrix was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the POE particle size was significantly decreased by the addition of EGMA, and the POE particle size and distribution decreased with the increase of the compatibilizer content up to 2% EGMA, beyond which the POE particle size and distribution remained unchanged. The reactions between the epoxy groups of EGMA and carboxylic or hydroxyl groups of PLA were elucidated by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Rheological results showed that the G'(omega), G "(omega), and complex viscosity of PLA/POE blends significantly increased at low frequencies with the addition of EGMA. The failure mode changed from brittle fracture of the neat PLA to ductile fracture of the PLA/POE blends.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIllite particles were exfoliated by the intercalation and subsequent deintercalation of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the interlayer of illite, and the exfoliated illite particles were used to prepare a novel poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–illite nanocomposite. The resulting exfoliated illite and PEO–illite nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry, ion conductivity testing, thermogravimetry analysis, and mechanical testing. The XRD results showed that the acid treatment of illite to exchange K+ in the interlayer of illite with H+ was a necessary condition for the DMSO intercalation. SEM micrographs confirmed the exfoliation of the illite particles in the process of DMSO deintercalation from the interlayer of the illite–DMSO intercalation complex. A good dispersion of exfoliated illite in the PEO matrix was also confirmed. A gradual decrease in the PEO crystallinity in the PEO–illite nanocomposites was observed with increasing exfoliated illite concentration. The ion conductivity of the nanocomposites gradually increased with the filler content and reached 3.21 × 10−5 S/cm at an illite concentration of 20 wt %. The formation of an amorphous region around the exfoliated illite was beneficial for Li+‐ion conduction. The ion conductivity significantly increased when the amorphous regions were connected to each other to form a conducting path for Li+ ions with a high filler concentration of greater than 10 wt %. Meanwhile, the thermooxidative stability and mechanical properties of the PEO–illite nanocomposites were also enhanced when exfoliated illite was introduced into the polymer matrix. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Poly(ethylene oxide) PEO/Na+-montmorillonite and polyethylene–poly(ethylene glycol) (PE–PEG) diblock copolymer/Na+-montmorillonite nanocomposites have been prepared by melt intercalation method. The effect of thermal treatment on the amount of PEO and PE–PEG diblock copolymer intercalated into layers of Na+-montmorillonite and on ionic conductivity of PEO/Na+-MMT nanocomposites have been evaluated. It was found that PEO can be intercalated into the layers of Na+-MMT by simple mechanical blending and part of PE in PE–PEG diblock copolymers was also intercalated into the layers of Na+-MMT. The intercalated amount increases with thermal treatment time, which improves the ionic conductivity of the PEO/Na+-MMT nanocomposites. PE–PEG diblock copolymer/Na+-MMT hybrids can be considered as a new kind of fillers for the reinforcement of polyethylene. By only adding a small amount (1–15% by weight) of these fillers, tensile strength of polyethylene was improved significantly. This research provides valuable information for the development of new kinds of fillers for polymer reinforcement, and polyelectrolytes.

Abstract:Kaolinite-urea intercalation complex was prepared using kaolinite as intercalation host and urea as intercalating agent. The kaolinite-urea intercalation complex was used as precursor to prepare exfoliated kaolinite by deintercalating urea molecules from the interlayers of kaolinite through ultrasonic treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the as-prepared exfoliated kaolinite. A broad 001 diffraction of kaolinite with weak intensity showed the random orientation of kaolinite platelets. SEM micrograph confirmed the exfoliation of kaolinite particles with layer thickness of no more than 50 nm. The exfoliated kaolinite particles were used as filler to poly(ethylene-oxide)/LiClO4 (PEO/LiClO4) system to prepare PEO/kaolinite composites, with the aim to improve the ion conductivity and mechanical property of the PEO matrix. SEM, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), XRD and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the PEO/kaolinite composites. SEM and TEM micrographs exhibited a good dispersion of exfoliated kaolinite in PEO matrix. XRD results showed that the crystallinity of PEO was gradually decreasing with increased exfoliated kaolinite content. FTIR analysis indicated that the hydrogen bonding was formed between the oxygen atoms of PEO segments and the hydroxyl groups on kaolinite surface, and this interaction between PEO and kaolinite was beneficial to the decrease in crystallinity of PEO. In order to evaluate the effect of the exfoliated kaolinite on ion conductivity and mechanical property of PEO matrix, AC impedance measurement and mechanical test were carried out. The results indicated that the ion conductivity of the composites gradually increased with increased exfoliated kaolinite content and reached 6.0 x 10(-5) S/cm at filler concentration of 20 wt%. The formation of amorphous region around the exfoliated kaolinite was beneficial for the Li+ ion conduction in PEO matrix. When the exfoliated kaolinite content reached 10 wt%, the formed amorphous regions were connected to each other to form a network for the transport of Li+ in the interconnected amorphous regions, leading to a sharp increase in ion conductivity. Moreover, the prepared composites under different drying temperature exhibited different ion conductivity. The reason was attributed to the change of PEO crystallinity with drying temperature, and the change trend of the ion conductivity was consistent with that of PEO crystallinity. Under the drying temperature of 95 degrees C, the as-prepared composite possessed high ion conductivity (6.8 x 10(-5) S/cm). In addition, the Young's modulus and tensile strength of the composites were improved because of the introduction of the exfoliated kaolinite into EPO matrix. The composites showed the maximal increase of 256% and 121% in Young's modulus and tensile strength, i.e., to 165.1 MPa and 6.743 MPa respectively, compared to PEO/LiClO4 (46.3 and 3.047 MPa). Therefore, the exfoliated kaolinite was a promising filler to prepare PEO based polymer electrolyte.

Abstract:Melt extrusion was used to prepare binary nanocomposites of ethylene copolymers and organoclay and trinary nanocomposites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), ethylene copolymer and organoclay. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the structure of the clay phase and the morphology of the nanocomposites. Influences of the comonomer in the copolymer and the content of the copolymer on the morphology of the resulting nanocomposites were discussed. The binary and the trinary composites may form intercalated or exfoliated structures depending on the interaction between the copolymer and the clay layers and the content of the copolymer.
Structure Characteristics and Thermal Properties of Silane-Grafted-Polyethylene/Clay Nanocomposite Prepared by Reactive Extrusion

Abstract:Silane-grafted-polyethylene/OMT nanocomposite (VTMS-g-PE/OMT) was prepared by reactive extrusion from linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), organically modified montmorillonite (OMT) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP). A series of tests such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) have been performed to characterize the morphology and thermal properties of the graft polymer and its nanocomposite. Results show that the graft polymer (VTMS-g-PE) chains have been successfully intercalated into OMT layers proved by XRD data (a d-spacing of 3.4nm) and TEM images; the PE chains have been chemically bounded to the OMT layers proved by FTIR spectra; the nanocomposite exhibits a higher thermal-oxidative stability than that of either the VTMS-grafted-LLDPE or the LLDPE proved by TGA curves. The increase in thermal properties lies in two facts: one is the formation of chemical bonds between PE macromolecules and OMT layers during silane graft reaction; the other is the in situ graft of PE macromolecules onto the OMT surfaces during thermal-oxidative degradation.

Abstract:In this study, three cationic surfactants (hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, hexadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, and octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride) were used to modify montmorillonite and polyethylene (PE)/maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PE-g-MAH)/organic-montmorillonite (Org-MMT) nano-composites, prepared by two blending processes (direct-melt blending and solution blending). X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the intercalation behavior and microstructure of composites. Mechanical properties were also tested. It was found that the intercalation effect of PE/PE-g-MAH/Org-MMT could be enhanced by increasing the content of PE-g-MMT, using the silicate modified by a cationic surfactant with a benzyl group or long alkyl chain, adopting the solution-blending method or using high-density polyethylene as matrix. The degree of crystallinity of composites and the crystalline thickness perpendicular to the crystalline plane [like (110) and (200)] decreased with increasing amounts of PE-g-MAH and, under certain prescription, the crystalline thickness of the composite made by the solution method was much smaller than that made by direct-melt blending. This clearly showed that Org-MMT and PE-g-MAH had a heterogeneous nucleation effect on crystallization of PE from the melt, resulting in a decrease of crystalline thickness, and the heterogeneous nucleation effect was more evident in the nanocomposite made by the solution-blending method than in that made by the direct-melt intercalation process. The tensile strength initially increased and then decreased with increasing contents of PE-g-MAH. The maximum value in tensile strength (23.3 MPa) was achieved when the concentration of PE-g-MAH was 6 wt %. The impact strength increased concomitantly with the content of PE-g-MAH; it was 122.2 J/m when the concentration of PE-g-MAH was 9 wt %. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Novel Preparation of Poly(propylene)–layered Silicate Nanocomposites

Abstract:We used a novel approach to prepare poly(propylene)-clay nanocomposite starting from pristine montmorillonite and reactive compatibilizer hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. The nanocomposite structure was revealed by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution electronic microscopy. The thermal properties of the nanocomposite were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Abstract:To develop eco-polymeric materials is of significant importance to protect the global environment and promote the sustainable development of human society. Poly (propylene carbonate) (PPC) as a new biodegradable polymer has attracted much interest, but some properties of PPC have to be improved before the practical utilization.In this work, the re-dispersible unmodified laponite and montmorillonite (MMT) were used as the nanometer reinforcing phase to enhance the mechanical property, thermal stability and oxygen barrier property of PPC. Via a simple solution mixing method, the PPC/laponite and PPC/MMT nanocomposites were fabricated. The unmodified laponite and MMT were well dispersed in the PPC matrix, which was confirmed by TEM results. As a result, the obtained PPC/clay nanocomposites exhibited high transparency (>80%) and enhanced storage modulus (100–150% higher than PPC), when the clay content was in a range of 1–10 wt%. In addition, the incorporation of lower than 3 wt% of laponite and MMT increased the elongation at break and thermal stability of PPC. The initial decomposition temperature (Td10%) of PPC/clay nanocomposites with 1 wt% clay was approximately 250 °C, which was substantially higher than that of pure PPC (215 °C). The PPC/clay nanocomposites with 7 wt% clay displayed the lowest O2 permeability, which was two orders of magnitude lower than that of pure PPC. Therefore, the resultant PPC/clay nanocomposites with enhanced properties have a potential to boost the practical utilization of PPC.

Abstract:Polyethylene materials are of great interest to be used in many applications due to their many advantageous characteristics. It is light, highly chemical resistant, easy to process, low in cost and has good mechanical properties. Polyethylene is widely used as a cable-insulating material. However, research is still needed to further improve its insulation quality and properties. In this study, an experimental and alternative approach through a dynamic modeling method was conducted. The main objective was to investigate the effect of modified organoclay concentration on the properties of polyethylene/organoclay nanocomposites by observing their characterization and optical and mechanical properties. The thermogram curve reveals that 2 wt% organoclay used has the highest crystallinity (46.7%) while the highest amount of organoclay used produced the lowest crystallinity (31.2%). The presence of cracks was also observed mostly in the nanocomposite with higher content of organoclay, usually where 2.0 wt% and above of organoclay was used. Morphological observation from simulation results supports the experimental work. Only small pores were observed to form in lower concentrations, and as the concentration was increased to 2.0 wt% and above, the pores present became larger in size. Increasing the concentration of organoclay up to 2.0 wt% reduced the interfacial tension while increasing the concentration above 2.0 wt% did not bring any changes to the interfacial tension value. Different formulations produced different behavior of nanocomposite. Hence the control of the formulation was important to control the final result of the products for appropriate application in different sectors of industry.
Study on Preparation and Properties of Silane-crosslinked Polyethylene/ Magnesium Hydroxide/ Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

Abstract:Silane-crosslinked polyethylene/magnesium hydroxide/organomontmorillonite nanocomposite is prepared from linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), vinyltrimethoxysilane, magnesium hydroxide (MH), and organo-montmorillonite (OMT). The morphology is characterized by the X-ray diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. It is indicated that the intercalated morphology is formed in the polymer matrix. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, flammability, and crystallization are investigated by tensile, limiting oxygen index, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Results indicate that the crosslinked nanocomposite shows lower thermal-oxidative stability and fire safety than the crosslinked LLDPE/MH composite at the same additive level, the reason is postulated to be that the presence of MH and OMT decreases the crosslinking degree and the crosslinking network structure prevents the migration of OMT layers to the surface.
