Abstract:Recent advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy have enabled atomic-scale focused, coherent, and monochromatic electron probes, achieving nanoscale spatial resolution, meV energy resolution, sufficient momentum resolution, and a wide energy detection range in electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). A four-dimensional EELS (4D-EELS) dataset can be recorded with a slot aperture selecting the specific momentum direction in the diffraction plane and the beam scanning in two spatial dimensions. In this paper, the basic principle of the 4D-EELS technique and a few examples of its application are presented. In addition to parallelly acquired dispersion with energy down to a lattice vibration scale, it can map the real space variation of any EELS spectrum features with a specific momentum transfer and energy loss to study various locally inhomogeneous scattering processes. Furthermore, simple mathematical combinations associating the spectra at different momenta are feasible from the 4D dataset, e.g., the efficient acquisition of a reliable electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) signal is demonstrated. This 4D-EELS technique provides new opportunities to probe the local dispersion and related physical properties at the nanoscale.

Abstract:One of the most challenging issues when characterizing magnetic materials in the transmission electron microscope is to obtain quantitative magnetic parameters at the nanometer scale. However, the dynamical diffraction effects of electrons in the periodic crystal structures make the quantitative energy loss magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) technique complicated through deviations closely related to diffraction geometry. Here, we quantitatively demonstrate the up–down asymmetry existing in three-beam geometry of EMCD experiments and discuss its impact on experimental measurements via the calculations of dynamical diffraction theory. Lastly, we make a comparison of the quantitative magnetic parameters with and without considering this effect based on the experimental data of spinel structure NiFe2O4.

Abstract:Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) has evolved into an indispensable tool for structural and magnetic characterization of surfaces at the nanometer scale. In strong contrast to synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray PEEM as a leading method for element-specific magnetic properties via magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), laboratory ultraviolet (UV) PEEM has seen limited application with much smaller dichroism effects for in-plane magnetization. Here we introduce darkfield PEEM as a novel approach to enhance MCD contrast in threshold photoemission, enabling efficient MCD imaging with significantly enhanced contrast by an order-of-magnitude for Fe(001). This advancement paves the way for MCD imaging on femtosecond timescales using modern lasers. The experimental results will be quantitatively benchmarked against advanced relativistic photoemission calculations.

Abstract:Electron magnetic circular dichroism opens a new door to explore magnetic properties by transmitted electrons in the transmission electron microscope. However, obtaining quantitative magnetic parameters, such as spin and orbital magnetic moment with element-specificity, goes a long way along with the development and improvement of this technique both in theoretical and experimental aspects. In this review, we will give a detailed description of the quantitative electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) technique to measure magnetic parameters with spin-specificity, element-specificity, site-specificity, and orbital-spin-specificity. The discussion completely contains the procedures from raw experimental data acquisition to final magnetic parameters, together with the related custom code we have developed.

Abstract:We present a derivation of the orbital and spin sum rules for magnetic circular dichroic spectra measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope. These sum rules are obtained from the differential cross section calculated for symmetric positions in the diffraction pattern. Orbital and spin magnetic moments are expressed explicitly in terms of experimental spectra and dynamical diffraction coefficients. We estimate the ratio of spin to orbital magnetic moments and discuss first experimental results for the Fe L_{2,3} edge.

Abstract:Shadow X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) is a recent technique, in which the photon intensity in the shadow of an object lying on a surface, may be used to gather information about the three-dimensional magnetization texture inside the object. Our purpose here is to lay the basis of a quantitative analysis of this technique. We first discuss the principle and implementation of a method to simulate the contrast expected from an arbitrary micromagnetic state. Text book examples and successful comparison with experiments are then given. Instrumental settings are finally discussed, having an impact on the contrast and spatial resolution : photon energy, microscope extraction voltage and plane of focus, microscope background level, electric-field related distortion of three-dimensional objects, Fresnel diffraction or photon scattering.

Abstract:EMCD (electron magnetic circular dichroism) technique provides us a new opportunity to explore magnetic properties in the transmission electron microscope. However, specific diffraction geometry is the major limitation. Only the two-beam and three-beam case are demonstrated in the experiments until now. Here, we present the more general case of zone axial (ZA) diffraction geometry through which the EMCD signals can be detected even with the very strong sensitivity to dynamical diffraction conditions. Our detailed calculations and well-controlled diffraction conditions lead to experiments in agreement with theory. The effect of dynamical diffraction conditions on EMCD signals are discussed both in theory and experiments. Moreover, with the detailed analysis of dynamical diffraction effects, we experimentally obtain the separate EMCD signals for each crystallographic site in Y3Fe5O12, which is also applicable for other materials and cannot be achieved by site-specific EMCD and XMCD technique directly. Our work extends application of more general diffraction geometries and will further promote the development of EMCD technique.

Abstract:Electron energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) is a novel technique that allows magnetic information determination down to the nanoscale. However, constrained by the predefined diffraction geometry in regular EMCD experiments, it has not yet been feasible to obtain EMCD signals from amorphous materials, due to the lack of long-range ordering. Here we propose a protocol for EMCD detection in amorphous materials utilizing a single-crystalline overlayer acting as a two-beam splitter. Phase locking of the EMCD signals is observed and explained by two conceivable scenarios. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate significant EMCD signals of amorphous materials.

Abstract:Electron magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) is a promising technique to investigate local magnetic structures in the electron microscope. However, recognition of the EMCD signal, or also finding optimal parameter settings for given materials and sample orientations typically requires extensive simulations to aid the experiment. Here, we discuss how modern data processing techniques, in particular independent component analysis, can be used to identify magnetic signals in an unsupervised manner from energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) images. On the background of the recent advent of 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, we discuss how this data processing may enable simultaneous tracking of all three spatial components of the magnetic momenta for arbitrary materials and several sample orientations without the previous need of complementary simulations.

Abstract:The dynamic charge susceptibility, $\chi(q,\omega)$, is a fundamental observable of all materials, in one, two, and three dimensions, quantifying the collective charge modes, the ability of a material to screen charge, as well as its electronic compressibility. Here, we review the current state of efforts to measure this quantity using inelastic electron scattering, which historically has been called electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). We focus on comparison between transmission (T-EELS) and reflection (R-EELS) geometries as applied to a selection of 3D conductors. While a great deal is understood about simple metals, measurements of more strongly interacting and strange metals are currently contradictory, with different groups obtaining fundamentally conflicting results, emphasizing the importance of improved EELS measurements. Further, current opportunities for improvement in EELS techniques are vast, with the most promising future developments being in hemispherical and time-of-flight analyzers, as well as STEM instruments configured for high momentum resolution. We conclude that, despite more than half a century of work, EELS techniques are currently still in their infancy

Abstract:Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) has been well established in providing the composition and chemical bonding information of materials, particularly for light elements. Its potential for structural determination has long been known but has yet to be fully explored. With the convergence of rapid development in computing power and improvement in the efficiency of the material specific electronic structure simulation, plus the recent breakthrough in the development of C(s)-corrected electron microscopy, the reconstruction of the local three dimensional structure of nanomaterial using EELS in conjunction with advanced structural imaging and diffraction techniques is becoming increasingly feasible. In this paper, we will review from our own examples the progress in EELS instrumentation, methods and simulation to illustrate the progress that has been made. They include the density-function-theory-based ab initio spectroscopic simulation for standard-less fingerprint applications for metastable polymorph identification, magic angle electron energy-loss spectroscopy as well as recent results from the dual-detectors EELS system which allows the energy instability of the spectrometer to be analyzed in real-time and eventually compensated on-line.
Using Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy to Measure Nanoscale Electronic and Vibrational Dynamics in a TEM

Abstract:Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) can measure similar information to X-ray, UV-Vis, and IR spectroscopies but with atomic resolution and increased scattering cross sections. Recent advances in electron monochromators have expanded EELS capabilities from chemical identification to the realms of synchrotron-level core-loss measurements and to low-loss, 10-100 meV excitations such as phonons, excitons, and valence structure. EELS measurements are easily correlated with electron diffraction and atomic-scale real-space imaging in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to provide detailed local pictures of quasiparticle and bonding states. This perspective provides an overview of existing high-resolution EELS (HR-EELS) capabilities while also motivating the powerful next step in the field - ultrafast EELS in a TEM. Ultrafast EELS aims to combine atomic level, element specific, and correlated temporal measurements to better understand spatially specific excited state phenomena. Ultrafast EELS measurements also add to the abilities of steady-state HR-EELS by being able to image the electromagnetic field and use electrons to excite photon-forbidden and momentum-specific transitions. We discuss the technical challenges ultrafast HR-EELS currently faces, as well as how integration with in situ and cryo measurements could expand the technique to new systems of interest, especially molecular and biological samples.

Abstract:Continuous-wave electrically detected magnetic resonance (cw-EDMR or just EDMR) and its variants are powerful tools to investigate spin-dependent processes in materials and devices. The use of quadrature detection improves the quality and selectivity of EDMR analysis by allowing, for example, the separation of individual resonant spin lines. Here we propose an equivalent circuit model in order to better understand the EDMR quadrature signal in a variety of different situations. The model considers not just the electrical response of the sample but of cables and measuring circuit and its influence on the resulting spectral lines. Recent EDMR spectra from Alq3 based OLEDs, as well as from a-Si:H reported in the literature, were successfully described by the model. Moreover, the model allows the implementation of a fitting routine that can be easily used to determine accurate values of crucial parameters such as g-factor and linewidth of the resonant lines.

Abstract:The advent of electron monochromators has opened new perspectives on electron energy-loss spectroscopy at low energy losses, including phenomena such as surface plasmon resonances or electron transitions from the valence to the conduction band. In this paper, we report first results making use of the combination of an energy filter and a post-filter annular dark-field detector. This instrumental design allows us to obtain energy-filtered (i.e. inelastic) annular dark-field images in scanning transmission electron microscopy of the 2-dimensional semiconductor band-gap distribution of a GaN/Al45Ga55N structure and of surface plasmon resonances of silver nanoprisms. In comparison to other approaches, the technique is less prone to inelastic delocalization and relativistic artefacts. The mixed contribution of elastic and inelastic contrast is discussed.

Abstract:The application of PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) and Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM) techniques to the study of the electronic and chemical structures of ferroelectric materials is reviewed. Electron optics in both techniques gives spatial resolution of a few tens of nanometres. PEEM images photoelectrons, whereas LEEM images reflected and elastically backscattered electrons. Both PEEM and LEEM can be used in direct and reciprocal space imaging. Together, they provide access to surface charge, work function, topography, chemical mapping, surface crystallinity, and band structure. Examples of applications for the study of ferroelectric thin films and single crystals are presented. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC

Abstract:The momentum transfer in electron-energy-loss spectra (EELS) recorded in an electron microscope can be controlled in a manner akin to polarization-dependent soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy, however with much greater spatial resolution. Here we report orientation-dependent EELS from fine-grained MgB2 for both B K and Mg L-2,L-3 edges. Calculations based on an excited final state are used to suggest an anisotropic exciton for the peak at 55 eV at the Mg L-23 edge.

Abstract:Electron magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) is a high-resolution technique currently in development for quantitative magnetic measurements using transmitted electrons. However, the inevitable electron damage to materials can be a significant yet easily overlooked factor affecting the quantification accuracy. This work experimentally investigated the electron knock-on damage effects on EMCD of magnetic metals using metallic cobalt as a model. Three issues are involved in the metal-surface damage process. It was revealed that under sustained electron irradiation during spectra acquisition, gradual removal of the thin surface oxidation layer, rather than a simple continuous thickness reduction that changes the diffraction and plural scattering conditions, can lead to notable residual nonmagnetic components in EMCD spectra and may make the quantified result of the orbital-to-spin moment ratio remarkably higher than the actual value. It was, thus, proposed to pay great attention to the surface oxidation and to minimize the effect of the oxidation layer by performing electron irradiation on the target area prior to EMCD experiments. A further experiment was additionally proposed to quantify the impact of thickness reduction on the magnetic components of momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectra and the EMCD quantification. This study advances the application of EMCD in magnetic metals.
