Abstract:CdS nanorods of high aspect ratio were synthesized through the route of chemical bath deposition under a mild condition. Diphenylthiocarbazone (DPTA) was employed as an organic additive for the synthesis of CdS nanorods. The crystalline and microstructure of CdS nanorods were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD patterns indicate the existence of both cubic and hexagonal phases in the samples. The sample with the pH value of 10.5 showed a hexagonal (111) peak of maximum intensity, indicating the preferential orientation along the c axis of hexagonal CdS phase. Meanwhile, the cubic phase appeared at the pH value of 10.5. The TEM images reveal that the morphology of CdS could be controlled by adjusting the pH value. Highly crystalline CdS nanorods with the diameter of about 50 nm and the length of about 3 mu m were obtained at the pH value of 10.5. The effects of the pH value on the formation of CdS nanorods were studied. The electrical properties of the samples were also investigated. The results show that the sample prepared with DPTA as the organic additive exhibited a much lower resistance than those prepared with PVA as the additive and in pure ethanol. There were two big pi bonds in a DPTA molecule, which benefited the electron transfer. Finally, the growth mechanism of CdS nanorods and electron transfer in DPTA modified CdS nanorods were discussed.
