Abstract:We perform the analysis of evolution of cosmic string loops in the background of Gauss–Bonnet–de Sitter. The equation of motion of cosmic string loops in this spacetime is derived. Having solved the equation numerically we investigate the dependence of the loop evolution on the values of α, related to the Gauss–Bonnet coupling. In the Gauss–Bonnet–de Sitter spacetimes with different dimensionality there exists a special parameter αm. In the environment with α > αm, all the cosmic string loops will collapse to form black holes. Within the region 0 < α < αm, the stronger Gauss–Bonnet effect will lead more cosmic string loops, including smaller ones, to form black holes. The larger the value of α is, the smaller the special values that exist, and only the cosmic string loops with initial radius larger than the special values can expand and evolve instead of becoming black holes.

Abstract:In this work the equation of circular loops of cosmic string possessing time-dependent tension is studied in the de Sitter spacetime. We find that the cosmic string loops with initial radius r ( t 0 )>0.707 L , L de Sitter radius, should not collapse to form a black hole. It is also found that in the case of r ( t 0 )<0.707 L a loop of cosmic string whose tension depends on some power of cosmic time can not become a black hole if the power is lower than a critical value which is associated with the initial size of the loop. Our research gives rise to some important corrections to the conclusion in the case of loops of cosmic string with constant tension in the same background.

Abstract:In this Letter the equation of circular loops of cosmic string with periodic tension is investigated in the Minkowski spacetime and Robertson–Walker universe respectively. We find that the cosmic string loops possessing this kind of time-varying tension will evolve to oscillate instead of collapsing to form a black hole if their initial radii are not small enough.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a cosmic string loop captured by a rotating black hole, ignoring string reconnections. A loop is numerically evolved in Kerr spacetime, with the result that it turns into one or more growing or contracting double-lines rotating around the black hole in the equatorial plane. This is in good agreement with the approximate analytical treatment of the problem investigated by Xing et al., who studied the evolution of the auxiliary curve associated with the string loop. We confirm that the auxiliary curve deformation can indeed describe the string motion in realistic physical scenarios to a reasonable accuracy, and can thus be used to further study other phenomena such as superradiance and reconnections of the captured loop.

If the loops expand with Hubble flow at the time of formation of loops, and when the major semi-axis is longer than the minor semi-axis by several Schwarzschild radii, it should not collapse to form a black hole.

Abstract:An implicit, fully characteristic, numerical scheme for solving the field equations of a cosmic string coupled to gravity is described. The inclusion of null infinity as part of the numerical grid allows us to apply suitable boundary conditions on the metric and matter fields to suppress unphysical divergent solutions. The code is tested by comparing the results with exact solutions, checking that static cosmic string initial data remain constant when evolved and undertaking a time dependent convergence analysis of the code. It is shown that the code is accurate, stable and exhibits clear second order convergence. The code is used to analyse the interaction between a Weber--Wheeler pulse of gravitational radiation with the string. The interaction causes the string to oscillate at frequencies inversely proportional to the masses of the scalar and vector fields of the string. After the pulse has largely radiated away the string continues to ring but the oscillations slowly decay and eventually the variables return to their static values.

Effective Kerr geometry from loop quantum gravity

Abstract:We derive an effective Kerr metric from an effective Schwarzschild metric inspired by loop quantum gravity through the Newman-Janis algorithm. The resulting spacetime is free from the classical ring singularity and does not allow the existence of closed time-like curves, due to a lower radial bound in its domain inherited by the spherically symmetric seed metric. We give a possible interpretation to this lower bound by casting the metric in generalized Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates. We analyze the horizon structure and the ergoregion pointing out the similarities and the differences with the classical Kerr spacetime. The study of the trajectory of the zero angular momentum observer allows to show two novel effects due purely to quantum gravity related to the frame dragging and the repulsive behaviour in the deep quantum region. We derive an effective separation Carter constant and the geodesic equations. Finally, we specialize the geodesic analysis to equatorial circular trajectories obtaining a modified third Kepler law and the equation defining the photon sphere.

Abstract:This paper explores the dynamics of the Klein-Gordon oscillator in the presence of a cosmic string in Som Raychaudhuri spacetime. The exact solutions for the free case and the oscillator case are obtained and discussed. These solutions reveal the effects of the cosmic string and the spacetime geometry on the bosonic particles. To illustrate these results, some figures and tables have been included.

Abstract:In their interesting article entitled "Kerrr" black hole: The lord of the string [Phys. Lett. B bf 688, 82 (2010)], Smailagic and Spallucci report on a regular Kerr-like black hole spacetime with a string in the central region. The metric is of the Kerr-Schild form with a particular mass function, that is chosen in order to avoid the ring singularity of the Kerr metric. However, as it is known, even for a class of well-behaved mass functions, the curvature scalars present a discontinuity in the equatorial plane at the ring. The authors associate such a discontinuity with the presence of a string of matter and join the interior and exterior regions of the string by making a particular choice of the orientations of the normal vectors at each side of the ring. Differently from what was interpreted by the authors, we show here that the string is not rotating in the scenario of that work. We also show that the choice regarding the normal vector orientation leads to a geometry that is not compatible with the center of a rotating black hole in an asymptotically flat spacetime. We then consider all the four possible combinations of the normal vector orientation at each side of the ring and, by using the Darmois-Israel formalism, interpret each resulting solution. We show that, out of the four possibilities, only one of the four models for the thin shell solution at the ring yields the appropriate geometry. More importantly, this solution does not correspond to the one obtained by Smailagic and Spallucci. Finally, we also discuss a scenario where the string is indeed rotating.

Rotating elastic string loops in flat and black hole spacetimes: stability, cosmic censorship and the Penrose process

Abstract:We rederive the equations of motion for relativistic strings, that is, one-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, and use them to study circular string loops rotating in the equatorial plane of flat and black hole spacetimes. We start by obtaining the conditions for equilibrium, and find that: (i) if the string's longitudinal speed of sound does not exceed the speed of light then its radius when rotating in Minkowski's spacetime is always larger than its radius when at rest; (ii) in Minkowski's spacetime, equilibria are linearly stable for rotation speeds below a certain threshold, higher than the string's longitudinal speed of sound, and linearly unstable for some rotation speeds above it; (iii) equilibria are always linearly unstable in Schwarzschild's spacetime. Moreover, we study interactions of a rotating string loop with a Kerr black hole, namely in the context of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and the Penrose process. We find that: (i) elastic string loops that satisfy the null energy condition cannot overspin extremal black holes; (ii) elastic string loops that satisfy the dominant energy condition cannot increase the maximum efficiency of the usual particle Penrose process; (iii) if the dominant energy condition (but not the weak energy condition) is violated then the efficiency can be increased. This last result hints at the interesting possibility that the dominant energy condition may underlie the well known upper bounds for the efficiencies of energy extraction processes (including, for example, superradiance).

Abstract:Four-dimensional Kerr-Schild (KS) geometry displays remarkable relationships with quantum world and theory of superstrings. In particular, the Kerr-Newman (KN) solution has gyromagnetic ratio g = 2, as that of the Dirac electron and represents a consistent background for gravitational and electromagnetic field of the electron. As a consequence of very big spin/mass ratio, black hole horizons disappear, exposing the naked Kerr singular ring. We consider four-decade history of development of this structure which took finally the form of a point-string-membrane-bubble complex which is reminiscent of the enhancon model of string/M-theory. A complex string obtained in the complex structure of the Kerr geometry gives an extra dimension to the world-sheet of the real Kerr string, forming a membrane by analogue with the string/M-theory unification. By analysis of the orientifold parity of the complex Kerr string, we obtain that the determined by the Kerr theorem principal null congruence of the Kerr geometry is described by a quartic equation in projective twistor space CP3, and therefore, it creates the known Calabi- Yau twofold (K3 surface) in twistor space of the 4d KS geometry. We connect it with N=2 superstring which has (complex) critical dimension two and may be embedded into complex KS geometry.

Abstract:We calculate the metric and affine connection due to a piecewise linear cosmic string loop, and the effect of gravitational back reaction for the Garfinkle-Vachaspati loop with four straight segments. As expected, back reaction reduces the size of the loop, in accord with the energy going into gravitational waves. The "square" (maximally symmetric) loop evaporates without changing shape, but for all other loops in this class, the kinks become less sharp and segments between kinks become curved. If the loop is close to the square case, it will evaporate before its kinks are significantly changed, if it is far from square, the opening out of the kinks is much faster than evaporation of the loop.

Abstract:Loop quantum gravity, as one branch of quantum gravity, holds the potential to explore the fundamental nature of black holes. Recently, according to the quantum Oppenheimer-Snyder model in loop quantum cosmology, a novel loop quantum corrected black hole in de Sitter spacetime has been discovered. Here, we first investigate the corresponding quasinormal modes and late-time behavior of massless neutral scalar field perturbations based on such a quantum-modified black hole in de Sitter spacetime. The frequency and time domain analysis of the lowest-lying quasinormal modes is derived by the Prony method, the matrix method as well as Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. The influences of loop quantum correction, the black hole mass ratio, and the cosmological constant on the quasinormal frequencies are studied in detail. The late-time behaviors of quantum-modified black holes possess an exponential decay, which is mainly determined not only by the multipole number but also by the cosmological constant. The impact of loop quantum correction on the late-time tail is negligible, but it has a significant impact on damping oscillation. To explore spacetime singularities, we examine the validity of strong cosmic censorship for a near-extremal quantum-modified black hole in de Sitter spacetime. As a result, it is found that the strong cosmic censorship is destroyed as the black hole approaches the near-extremal limit, but the violation becomes weaker as the cosmological constant and the loop quantum correction increase. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.064012 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:This paper concerns the motion of relativistic strings in the Schwarzschild space-time. As a general framework, we first analyze the basic equations for the motion of a p-dimensional extended object in a general enveloping space-time (N; ~g), which is a given Lorentzian manifold, and then particularly investigate the interesting properties enjoyed by the equations for the motion of relativistic strings in the Schwarzschild space-time. Based on this, under suitable assumptions we prove the global existence of smooth solutions of the Cauchy problem for the equations for the motion of relativistic strings with small arc length in the Schwarzschild space-time.
Cosmic string loops: large and small, but not tiny

Abstract:We develop an analytical model to study the production spectrum of loops in the cosmic string network. In the scaling regime, we find two different scales corresponding to large (one order below horizon) and small (few orders below horizon) loops. The very small (tiny) loops at the gravitational back reaction scale are absent, and thus, our model has no ultra-violet divergences. We calculate the spectrum of loops and derive analytical expressions for the positions and magnitudes of the small and large scale peaks. The small loops are produced by large bursts of similar loops moving with very high velocities in the same direction. We describe the shape of large loops, which would usually consist of few kinks and few cusps per oscillation cycle. We also argue that the typical size of large loops is set by the correlation length, which does not depend on the intercommutation probability p, while the interstring distance scales as p^{1/3}.

Abstract:It is well known that some spacetime singularities of low energy effective action can be resolved by the effective loop corrections. However, the known potentials for the loop corrections fail to regulate the singularity of three dimensional black string. An alternative method is to introduce an extra flat spatial direction and boost away the singularity by using the $O\left(d,d\right)$ rotation with the special Kalb-Ramond field. In this paper, we investigate a new set of non-local dilaton potentials for the effective loop corrections. The result shows that the singularity of three dimensional black string can be consistently resolved by the loop corrections.

Abstract:The classical Einstein--Maxwell field equations admit static horizonless wormhole solutions with only a circular cosmic string singularity. We show how to extend these static solutions to exact rotating asymptotically flat solutions. For a suitable range of parameter values, these solutions describe charged or neutral rotating closed cosmic strings, with a perimeter of the order of their Schwarzschild radius.
