Abstract:The elliptic loop equation of cosmic string is studied in the Minkowski space and during the radiation-dominated era in the Robertson-Walker universe. A remarkable fact about this equation is that a loop may never contract to one with a Schwarzschild radius, if it is sufficiently non-circular.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a cosmic string loop captured by a rotating black hole, ignoring string reconnections. A loop is numerically evolved in Kerr spacetime, with the result that it turns into one or more growing or contracting double-lines rotating around the black hole in the equatorial plane. This is in good agreement with the approximate analytical treatment of the problem investigated by Xing et al., who studied the evolution of the auxiliary curve associated with the string loop. We confirm that the auxiliary curve deformation can indeed describe the string motion in realistic physical scenarios to a reasonable accuracy, and can thus be used to further study other phenomena such as superradiance and reconnections of the captured loop.

Abstract:We construct excited states of fundamental strings that admit a semiclassical description as rotating circular loops of string. We identify them with the supergravity solutions for rotating dipole rings. The identification involves a precise match of the mass, radius and angular momentum of the two systems. Moreover, the degeneracy of the string state reproduces the parametric dependence of the entropy in the supergravity description. When the solutions possess two macroscopic angular momenta, they are better described as toroidal configurations (tubular loops) instead of loops of string. We argue that the decay of the string state can be interpreted as superradiant emission of quanta from the ergoregion of the rotating ring.

Rotating elastic string loops in flat and black hole spacetimes: stability, cosmic censorship and the Penrose process

Abstract:We rederive the equations of motion for relativistic strings, that is, one-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, and use them to study circular string loops rotating in the equatorial plane of flat and black hole spacetimes. We start by obtaining the conditions for equilibrium, and find that: (i) if the string's longitudinal speed of sound does not exceed the speed of light then its radius when rotating in Minkowski's spacetime is always larger than its radius when at rest; (ii) in Minkowski's spacetime, equilibria are linearly stable for rotation speeds below a certain threshold, higher than the string's longitudinal speed of sound, and linearly unstable for some rotation speeds above it; (iii) equilibria are always linearly unstable in Schwarzschild's spacetime. Moreover, we study interactions of a rotating string loop with a Kerr black hole, namely in the context of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and the Penrose process. We find that: (i) elastic string loops that satisfy the null energy condition cannot overspin extremal black holes; (ii) elastic string loops that satisfy the dominant energy condition cannot increase the maximum efficiency of the usual particle Penrose process; (iii) if the dominant energy condition (but not the weak energy condition) is violated then the efficiency can be increased. This last result hints at the interesting possibility that the dominant energy condition may underlie the well known upper bounds for the efficiencies of energy extraction processes (including, for example, superradiance).

Abstract:The Pulsar timing data from NANOGrav Collaboration has regenerated interest in the possibility of observing stochastic gravitational wave background arising from cosmic strings. In the standard theory, the cosmic string network forms during spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phase transition in the whole universe via the so called Kibble mechanism. This scenario would not be possible, e.g., in models of low energy inflation, where the reheat temperature is much lower than the energy scale of cosmic strings. We point out a very different possibility, where a network of even high energy scale cosmic strings can form when the temperature of the Universe is much lower. We consider local heating of plasma in the early universe by evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs). It is known that for suitable masses of PBHs, their Hawking radiation may re-heat the surrounding plasma to high temperatures, restoring certain symmetries {\it locally} which are broken at the ambient temperature at that stage. Expansion of the hot plasma cools it so that the {\it locally restored symmetry} is spontaneously broken again. If this SSB supports formation of cosmic strings, then string loops will form in this region around the PBH. Further, resulting temperature gradients lead to pressure gradients such that plasma develops radial flow with the string loops getting stretched as they get dragged by the flow. For a finite density of PBHs of suitable masses, one will get local hot spots, each one contributing to expanding cosmic string loops. For suitable PBH density, the loops from different regions may intersect. Intercommutation of strings can then lead to percolation, leading to the possibility of formation of infinite string network, even when the entire universe never goes through the respective SSB phase transition.

Abstract:String loop vibrations in a central plane of a Schwarzschild black hole are investigated for various string equations of state. We discuss string loop stability and derive frequencies of vibrational modes. Using the vibrating string loop model we fit the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) observed in X-ray signal coming from some compact sources. We demonstrate how the string-loop parameters are related to the radial and vertical fundamental vibration modes, and how the vibrational instability can be related to the Q-factor characterizing the observed QPOs.

Abstract:Using the $\delta N$ formalism we calculate the one-loop correction to the large-scale power spectrum of the curvature perturbation in the standard scenario where primordial black holes are formed in the early universe thanks to a phase of ultra-slow-roll in single-field inflation. We explicitly show that one-loop corrections are negligible when the transition from the ultra-slow-roll to the slow-roll phase is smooth. We conclude that the PBH formation scenario through a ultra-slow-roll phase is viable.

Abstract:Loop quantum gravity, as one branch of quantum gravity, holds the potential to explore the fundamental nature of black holes. Recently, according to the quantum Oppenheimer-Snyder model in loop quantum cosmology, a novel loop quantum corrected black hole in de Sitter spacetime has been discovered. Here, we first investigate the corresponding quasinormal modes and late-time behavior of massless neutral scalar field perturbations based on such a quantum-modified black hole in de Sitter spacetime. The frequency and time domain analysis of the lowest-lying quasinormal modes is derived by the Prony method, the matrix method as well as Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. The influences of loop quantum correction, the black hole mass ratio, and the cosmological constant on the quasinormal frequencies are studied in detail. The late-time behaviors of quantum-modified black holes possess an exponential decay, which is mainly determined not only by the multipole number but also by the cosmological constant. The impact of loop quantum correction on the late-time tail is negligible, but it has a significant impact on damping oscillation. To explore spacetime singularities, we examine the validity of strong cosmic censorship for a near-extremal quantum-modified black hole in de Sitter spacetime. As a result, it is found that the strong cosmic censorship is destroyed as the black hole approaches the near-extremal limit, but the violation becomes weaker as the cosmological constant and the loop quantum correction increase. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.064012 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Let a physical event constitute a simple loop in spacetime. This in turn calls for a generalized loop line element ( =distance2 between two neighboring loops) capable of restoring, at the shrinking loop limit, the special relativistic line element ( =distance2 between the two neighboring centers-of-mass, respectively). Sticking at first stage to a flat Euclidean/Minkowski background, one is led to such a preliminary loop line element, where the role of coordinates is played by the oriented cross sections projected by the loop event. Such cross sections are generically center-of-mass independent, unless (owing to a topological term) the loop events are intrinsically wrapped around a Kaluza-Klein–like compact fifth dimension. Serendipitously, it is the Kaluza-Klein ingredient which, on top of its traditional assignments, is shown to govern the extension of the Pythagoras theorem to loop space. Associated with M4⊗S1 is then a ten-dimensional loop spacetime metric, whose four-dimensional center-of-mass core term is supplemented by a six-dimensional Maxwell-style fine structure. The imperative inclusion of a positive (say Nambu-Goto) string tension within the framework of loop special relativity is fingerprinted by a low periodicity breathing mode. Loop quantization of the Schwarzschild interior revisited

Abstract:The loop quantization of the Schwarzschild interior region, as described by a homogeneous anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs model, is re-examined. As several studies of different -inequivalent- loop quantizations have shown, to date there exists no fully satisfactory quantum theory for this model. This fact poses challenges to the validity of some scenarios to address the black hole information problem. Here we put forward a novel viewpoint to construct the quantum theory that builds from some of the models available in the literature. The final picture is a quantum theory that is both independent of any auxiliary structure and possesses a correct low curvature limit. It represents a subtle but non-trivial modification of the original prescription given by Ashtekar and Bojowald. It is shown that the quantum gravitational constraint is well defined past the singularity and that its effective dynamics possesses a bounce into an expanding regime. The classical singularity is avoided, and a semiclassical spacetime satisfying vacuum Einstein's equations is recovered on the "other side" of the bounce. We argue that such metric represents the interior region of a white-hole spacetime, but for which the corresponding "white-hole mass" differs from the original black hole mass. Furthermore, we find that the value of the white-hole mass is proportional to the third power of the starting black hole mass.

A new quantization scheme of black holes in effective loop quantum gravity

Abstract:Loop quantum cosmology has achieved great successes, in which the polymerization plays a crucial role. In particular, the phase-space-variable dependent polymerization turns out to be the unique one that leads to consistent quantization of the homogeneous and isotropic universe. However, when applying the same scheme to the quantization of black holes, it meets resistances, when the Kantowski-Sachs (KS) gauge is adopted. In this paper, we continue to study the quantum effects of the polymerization near the location that a classical black hole horizon used to be, from the point of view of effective loop quantum gravity in the KS gauge. In particular, we find a phase-space-variable dependent polymerization scheme that leads to negligible quantum effects near the location of the classical black hole horizon, but significantly alters the spacetime structure near the origin, so that the classical singularity is finally replaced by a finite and regular transition surface. The final geodesically-complete spacetime consists of the regular transition surface that connects a black hole in one side and an anti-trapped region in the other side. In the anti-trapped region, no white hole horizons are found and the spacetime is extended to infinity, at which the geometric radius of the two-spheres becomes infinitely large.

Accretion onto Oscillating Cosmic String Loops

Abstract:Cosmic string loops are non-linear density fluctuations which form in the early universe and could play an important role in explaining many phenomena which are in tension with the standard $\Lambda$CDM model. Hence, the details of the accretion process onto cosmic string loops should be studied in detail. Most previous works view loops as point masses and ignore the impact of a finite loop size. In this work, we utilize the Zel'dovich approximation to calculate the non-linear mass sourced by a static extended loop with a time-averaged density profile derived from the trajectory of the loop oscillation, and compare the result with what is obtained for a point-mass source. We find that the finite size of a loop mainly affects the evolution of turnaround shells during the early stages of accretion, converging to the point mass result after a critical redshift, $z^{(II)/(III)}_{c}$. For $z>z^{(II)/(III)}_{c}$, the total accreted mass surrounding a loop is suppressed relative to the point mass case and has a growth rate proportional to $(1+z)^{-3/2}$. As an immediate extension, we also qualitatively analyse the accretion onto moving point masses and onto moving extended loops. In addition to the reduction in the nonlinear mass, the loop finite size also changes the shape of the turnaround surface at early stages of accretion.

The correspondence between rotating black holes and fundamental strings

Abstract:The correspondence principle between strings and black holes is a general framework for matching black holes and massive states of fundamental strings at a point where their physical properties (such as mass, entropy and temperature) smoothly agree with each other. This correspondence becomes puzzling when attempting to include rotation: At large enough spins, there exist degenerate string states that seemingly cannot be matched to any black hole. Conversely, there exist black holes with arbitrarily large spins that cannot correspond to any single-string state. We discuss in detail the properties of both types of objects and find that a correspondence that resolves the puzzles is possible by adding dynamical features and non-stationary configurations to the picture. Our scheme incorporates all black hole and string phases as part of the correspondence, save for one outlier which remains enigmatic: the near-extremal Kerr black hole. Along the way, we elaborate on general aspects of the correspondence that have not been emphasized before.

Abstract:We construct a cohomogeneity-1 helical black string in six-dimensional Einstein gravity. The helical solution branches from the onset of the gravitational superradiant instability of the equal-spinning Myers-Perry black string. The isometry group of the helical black string is $\mathbb{R}_T \times U(1)_Z \times SU(2)$, where the first two are helical isometries generated by linear combinations of time translation, shifts along the string, and rotation, each of which is individually broken by the superradiant instability. The helical black string is stationary, non-axisymmetric, and has nonzero horizon velocity despite the absence of momentum in the string direction. The entropy of the helical black string is higher than that of the Myers-Perry black string, but lower than cohomogeneity-2 ``black resonator strings'' (recently found) when the solutions overlap in the microcanonical ensemble. The entropy of the helical black string approaches zero when the horizon velocity along the string reaches its maximum given by the speed of light. Nevertheless, we find no evidence for the existence of regular horizonless solutions in this limit.

Abstract:It is known that the single-field inflation with a transient ultra-slow-roll phase can produce a large curvature perturbation at small scales for the formation of primordial black holes. In our previous work, we have considered quantum loop corrections to the curvature perturbation and found that the growth of these small-scale modes would affect the curvature perturbation at large scales probed by cosmic microwave background observation. In this work, we will further derive the constraints on the growing modes in the transition between the slow-roll and the ultra-slow-roll phases under the effect of the loop corrections. Our results would help clarify the recent controversy on whether or not the primordial-black-hole formation from the single-field inflation is ruled out at one-loop level.

Revisiting quantum black holes from effective loop quantum gravity

Abstract:We systematically study a family of loop quantizations for the classical Kruskal spacetimes using the effective description motivated from loop quantum gravity for four generic parameters, $c_o, m, \delta_b$, and $\delta_c$, where the latter two denote the polymerization parameters that capture the underlying quantum geometry. We focus on the family where polymerization parameters are constant on dynamical trajectories and of which the Ashtekar-Olmedo-Singh (AOS) and Corichi-Singh (CS) models appear as special cases. We study general features of singularity resolution in all these models due to quantum gravity effects and analytically extend the solutions across the white hole (WH) and black hole (BH) horizons to the exterior. We find that the leading term in the asymptotic expansion of the Kretschmann scalar is $r^{-4}$. However, for AOS and CS models, black holes with masses greater than solar mass, the dominant term behaves as $r^{-6}$ for the size of the observable Universe and our analysis can be used to phenomenologically constrain the choice of parameters for other models. In addition, one can uniquely fix the parameter $c_o$ by requiring that the Hawking temperature at the BH horizon to the leading order be consistent with its classical value for a macroscopic BH. Assuming that the BH and WH masses are of the same order, we are able to identify a family of choices of $\delta_b$ and $\delta_c$ which share all the desired properties of the AOS model.
