Abstract:This paper concerns the motion of relativistic strings in the Schwarzschild space-time. As a general framework, we first analyze the basic equations for the motion of a p-dimensional extended object in a general enveloping space-time (N; ~g), which is a given Lorentzian manifold, and then particularly investigate the interesting properties enjoyed by the equations for the motion of relativistic strings in the Schwarzschild space-time. Based on this, under suitable assumptions we prove the global existence of smooth solutions of the Cauchy problem for the equations for the motion of relativistic strings with small arc length in the Schwarzschild space-time.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the motion of relativistic strings in Schwarzschild space-time. Abstract:In this paper we investigate the dynamics of relativistic (in particular, closed) strings moving in the Minkowski space ℝ^1+n (n≥ 2) . We first derive a system with n nonlinear wave equations of Born-Infeld type which governs the motion of the string. This system can also be used to describe the extremal surfaces in ℝ^1+n . We then show that this system enjoys some interesting geometric properties. Based on this, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the global existence of extremal surfaces without space-like point in ℝ^1+n with given initial data. This result corresponds to the global propagation of nonlinear waves for the system describing the motion of the string in ℝ^1+n . We also present an explicit exact representation of the general solution for such a system. Moreover, a great deal of numerical analyses are investigated, and the numerical results show that, in phase space, various topological singularities develop in finite time in the motion of the string. Finally, some important discussions related to the theory of extremal surfaces of mixed type in ℝ^1+n are given.

Abstract:In this paper we study the motion of relativistic strings in the Minkowski space R1+n which is governed by n nonlinear partial differential equations of second order. Surprisingly, we obtain a general solution formula for this complicated system of nonlinear equations. Furthermore, based on this solution formula, we show that the motion of closed strings is always time-periodic. We further extend our solution formula to finite relativistic strings.

A nonlinear wave equation is derived and investigated for relativistic membranes moving in the Schwarzschild spacetime, and spherical symmetric solutions for the motion are obtained and studied systematically. Abstract:We obtain a non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariant string action as a special limit of the Nambu-Goto action in an FLRW background. We use this action to study non-relativistic string dynamics in an expanding universe and construct an analytic model describing the macroscopic properties of non-relativistic string networks. The non-relativistic constraint equations allow arbitrarily small string velocities and thus a `frustrated' equation of state for non-interacting strings can be obtained without the need of a velocity damping mechanism. Assuming that colliding string segments reconnect by exchange of partners, non-relativistic string networks exhibit scaling behaviour, but with enhanced energy densities due to the reduced average string velocity. Non-relativistic string networks can be relevant in several contexts in condensed matter physics and cosmology.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the global stability of the plane wave solutions to the relativistic string equation with non-small perturbations. Under certain decay assumptions on the plane wave, we conclude that the perturbed system admits a globally smooth solution if the perturbation along the transversal direction is sufficiently small, while the travelling direction is allowed to be large. By choosing a gauge adapted to the plane wave solution, we deduce an equivalent Euler-Lagrangian equation for the perturbation whose quasilinear structure is reflected precisely in the induced geometry of the relativistic string. It then helps to proceed with a geometrically adapted and weighted energy argument for which robust estimates suffice. Moreover, due to the non-trivial background solutions, the induced metric of the relativistic string involves linear perturbations with undetermined signs, and hence a key observation is needed to guarantee that the energies associated with the multipliers are positive up to lower-order terms.

Abstract:The equation of motion of an extended object in spacetime reduces to an ordinary differential equation in the presence of symmetry. By properly defining of the symmetry with notion of cohomogeneity, we discuss the method for classifying all these extended objects. We carry out the classification for the strings in the five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space by the effective use of the local isomorphism between $\SO(4,2)$ and $\SU(2,2)$. We present a general method for solving the trajectory of the Nambu-Goto string and apply to a case obtained by the classification, thereby find a new solution which has properties unique to odd-dimensional anti-de Sitter spaces. The geometry of the solution is analized and found to be a timelike helicoid-like surface.

Abstract:Using the Schwarzschild-type coordinates in stead of the global ones we reconstruct the classical rotating closed string solutions in the AdS*5 x S*5 backgrounds. They are explicitly described by the Jacobi elliptic and trigonometrical functions of worldsheet coordinates. We study the orbiting closed string configurations in the near-horizon geometries of Dp, NS1 and NS5 branes, and derive the energy and spin of them, whose relation takes a simple form for short strings. Specially in the D5 and NS5 backgrounds we have a linear relation that the energy of the point-like string is proportional to the spin, which is associated with the spectrum of strings in the pp-wave geometries obtained by taking a special Penrose limit on the D5 and NS5 backgrounds.

Abstract:We find a kind of variations of Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations suitable for Kaluza-Klein reduction and Cauchy problem. Especially the counterpart of extrinsic curvature tensor has antisymmetric part as well as symmetric one. If the dependence of metric tensor on reduced dimensions is negligible it becomes a pure antisymmetric tensor.

Abstract:In this paper we derive the equations for the motion of relativistic torus in the Minkowski space R1+n (n⩾3). This kind of equations also describes the three-dimensional timelike extremal submanifolds in the Minkowski space R1+n. We show that these equations can be reduced to a (1+2)-dimensional quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic system and the system possesses some interesting properties such as nonstrict hyperbolicity, constant multiplicity of eigenvalues, linear degeneracy of all characteristic fields, strong null condition, etc. We also find and prove an interesting fact that all plane wave solutions to these equations are lightlike extremal submanifolds and vice versa except for a type of special solution.

Abstract:We study the influence of a rotation on the string tension and the temperature of the confinement-deconfinement transition of gluodynamics by gauge/gravity duality. We explore two distinct approaches, global transformation and local transformation, to introduce rotation and compare the results. It is shown that the string tension extracted from the free energy in the presence of a heavy quarkonium decreases with the increasing angular velocity, while the transition temperature determined by the Polyakov loop increases with increasing angular velocity, which is in line with lattice simulations.

Abstract:We study the relativistic quantum motion of a spineless particle using the Feshbach-Villars (FV) formalism in the spinning cosmic string spacetime. The movement equations are derived using the first-order FV formulation of the Klein-Gordon (KG) equation. We apply the equation of motion (a) to study the motion of the particle confined to a rigid-wall potential, (b) motion in the presence of a Coulomb-type potential, and (c) particle interacting with the Feshbach-Villars oscillator (FVO). String propagation near Kaluza-Klein black holes: an analytical and numerical study

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed investigation of the motion of a string near a Kaluza-Klein black hole, using the null string expansion. The zeroth-order string equations of motion are set up separately for electrically and magnetically charged black hole backgrounds. The case of a string falling head-on into the black hole is considered in detail. The equations reduce to quadratures for a magnetically charged hole, while they are amenable to numerical solution for an electrically charged black hole. The Kaluza-Klein radius seen by the string as it approaches the black hole decreases in the magnetic case and increases in the electric case. For magnetic backgrounds, analytical solutions can be obtained in terms of elliptical integrals. These reduce to elementary functions in special cases, including that of the well-known Pollard-Gross-Perry-Sorkin monopole. Here the string exhibits decelerated descent into the black hole. The results in the authors' earlier papers are substantiated here by presenting a detailed analysis. A preliminary analysis of first-order perturbations is also presented, and it is shown that the invariant string length receives a nonzero contribution in the first order.

Abstract:We consider the Riemann problem of three-dimensional relativistic Euler equations with two discontinuous initial states separated by a planar hypersurface. Based on the detailed analysis on the Riemann solutions, special relativistic effects are revealed, which are the variations of limiting relative normal velocities and intermediate states and thus the smooth transition of wave patterns when the tangential velocities in the initial states are suitably varied. While in the corresponding non-relativistic fluid, these special relativistic effects will not occur.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the relativistic quantum motions of spin--zero scalar bosons via the Duffin--Kemmer--Petiau (DKP) equation with a position--dependent mass (PDM) system in the background of the topological defect space--time produced by a cosmic string. We determine the radial wave equation and obtain the exact analytical solutions of the wave equation for the linear and Cornell--type potential through the Bi--Confluent Heun differential equation. In fact, we have obtained the ground state energy for both potentials.

Abstract:In the context of the black hole/string transition, it is useful to produce Euclidean string backgrounds representing hot and self-gravitating strings. We utilise analytical and numerical methods to find a smooth, stationary rotating solution in the heterotic string theory at high temperatures. The solution describes a spinning winding-momentum condensate living in three non-compact dimensions, and its backreaction on the thermal cycle. At low temperatures, we expect a transition between our solution to an analytical continuation of an axionic Kerr black hole.
