Abstract:It is possible to write in a variety of styles, some of which rely on a manipulation of grammar for their effect. Take three examples. First, if a writer leaves out the active subject of a sentence, that sentence is said to be written in the ‘passive voice’ (or, as it is increasingly known, the ‘bureaucratic voice’). Things happen, but it is not clear how. The focus is on completed action and ultimate effect rather than on any actor. This style has the effect of creating an atmosphere devoid of responsibility; when a child explains ‘the window got broken’, it begs the question ‘who broke it?’ Ernest Hemingway provides a second example of a literary style; he was famous for his simplified writing, noted for its lack of adjectives and adverbs. The result is terse and abrupt prose, one where the characters’ context (the extent of their relationship, for example) is often implicit or assumed. The focus is on the character (Nick Adams, say) rather than his history. This gives the reader the strange feeling of eavesdropping on a conversation and not being quite ‘up to speed’ with what is being said. The novel Le Train de Nulle Part provides the third example: It is written entirely without verbs—description par excellence. The common critical complaint is predictable: not enough action.

Abstract:This essay, a companion piece to “Discipline and Punish: despatches from the citation manual wars and other (literally) unspeakable stories” [Law's cultural mediations, special edition. 2001. Griffith Law Review 10(2)], undertakes a situated and critical cultural analysis of US law, with particular attention to the law school's insistent “training for hierarchy” and the interrelationship of that training with the bodies and texts that are constitutive of judge-made law in the United States. And who promptly told the student. And who promptly told the student. This essay revisits the early orientation of cultural studies work towards interrogating subject-formation and critically positioning and problematizing the scholarly subject and the various institutions, discourses and practices that produce both her subject position and her critical practice. At the same time it also stages an anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-classist engagement with the congeries of mechanisms by which hegemony is inscribed, reproduced, and accorded value by a range of practices to do with disciplinary texts and their production within US legal institutions. Both “semiotic”/“textualist” and “culturalist”, then, in orientation, this essay finds little space for celebration or play, although it alludes in its title, inter alia, to Inventing the Abbots, an artifact of popular US cinema that was at once both a reinscription of the family romance and an exploration of the mutually reinforcing and corrosive effects of class, sexism and secrets/silence. Finally, the essay seeks to explore questions raised by Meaghan Morris and Gayatri Spivak about the possibility or radical transformation through such critical cultural practice and the risks of iteration that is complicity, of submission to and collaboration with disciplinary violence, and of the complex politics of negotiation.

Abstract:The article examines one of the key stories of Bruno Schultz’s collection «Cinnamon Shops» in the context of the aesthetic originality of the prose of the Polish modernist novelist, his ontology and poetics. Focusing on the whimsical nature of imagery, the word’s ability to creative demiurge, the synthesis of the spiritual and the material quite logically leads to the idea of Schulz’s ontological borderline. It is from this point of view that the artistic time-space of «Crocodile Street» is interpreted as the compositional and content center of the collection. Emphasis is placed on the multidimensional function of Schultz’s word, which is closely related to autobiography, intergenerational memory, the collective unconscious, and the theory of archetypes. The connection of the word with the poetics of form creation is traced, and the naming is considered from the point of view of the sacralization of the depicted objects, their correlation with the biblical acts of world creation. The phenomenon of «annexation of the subconscious», its influence on words, ideas as constructs of the author’s representation of the world is singled out. The images of a store, warehouses, and a labyrinth are correlated with the subconscious, the most secret recesses of the human soul. No less important is the connection with the cultural space, cartographic images of the Baroque, graphic art and critical self-reflections of the writer. The palimpsest of the urban space, the presence of different cultural traditions and everyday anthropological practices in it are studied. The connection between the images of the story and the typical Schultz concepts of puppetry, marionette behavior, the psychology of mimicry, adaptation to the situation is traced. The ambivalence of the author’s world, built on the game of verbal plans, balancing between the real and the unreal, the sphere of denotations and techniques of representation, is proven.

D.) and Cixous (H. C.) write (self-)portraits of themselves as other in their fictional encounters, one of whose central restagings is the inaugural, asymmetrical first-time meeting "face to back" (H. C. seeing J. D. with his back turned, not seeing her). Working through convoluted threads of linguistic play in French involving seeing (or blindness) [voir], knowing [savoir], (not) having [avoir] and being, the Jew as foreign or other being [autre, être] "to the letter" [lettre], etc., this study analyzes how these textual portraits can be framed within, or read against, a broad philosophical tradition (Descartes, Hegel) linking them to withdrawal [retrait] of being and of themselves as impossible gifts for the other in substitution.

Abstract:Abstract: Save for his letters and the review/essay “Hawthorne and His Mosses,” Herman Melville left behind no manifesto. He all but entrusted the principles of his ars poetica to characters and narrators. His body of work is rife with speakers questioning the possibilities of craft. It is as if Melville would split himself into a host of voices and personae, entrusting projections of himself with the task of judging others. This article deals with two of such occurrences: 1) Pierre ’s chapters on Pierre-as-writer, in which we see an artist-figure (the narrator) chronicling the failure of another (Pierre); 2) Mardi ’s Chapter 180, in which a philosopher (Babbalanja) narrates the deeds of a poet (Lombardo). In both instances, Melville presents the reader with a book-within-the-book whose plot details are kept deliberately vague. Both Pierre’s manuscript and Lombardo’s national epic, the Koztanza , are described only in the most general of ways. They are not two texts-within-the-text as much as two stage props charged with ritual significance but left without any real content. This article argues that Melville intentionally withholds information from the reader regarding these fictive oeuvres . Pierre ’s and Mardi ’s plot-absences thus become textual mirrors reflecting changing attitudes towards the creative process during two distinct stages of Melville’s career.

Abstract:I want to conclude with a more general observation. Much of the energy in Elsaghe’s work is derived from a particular perception of Mann’s work, or rather of the role of Thomas Mann in Germany today—his “Rolle [. . .] in der deutschen Selbstvergewisserung” (9). Elsaghe appears to believe that German Mann scholarship tends to shield its protagonist from criticism, from an honest interrogation of his historical legacy, because as a “Weltbürger,” even as a kind of secular saint, Mann is needed for the cultural and moral validation of the Berlin Republic. This seems to me to be a peculiarly non-German view of the matter. In Germany itself since 1945, and even before, the predominant view of Mann was and is that of a bitter and unjustly severe critic of Germany whose own contribution to German culture, especially to political culture, has been negligible, if not downright harmful, and in any case is still unwelcome. This observation, which can easily be verifi ed from the German literature on Mann, should give pause to Elsaghe and perhaps take some of the wind out of his sails.

Abstract:A literary history of London's tramways spans the period between late-Victorian and High Modernism, encompassing naturalist fiction, reportage, creative non-fiction, modernist poetry, and the psychological novel. The same timespan saw the horse tram give way to the electric tram, which itself faced replacement by motor buses and trolleybuses during the 1930s. This essay intersects these two narratives, of literary history and of transport history, as a contribution to mobility humanities focused on the city. Trams and tramways had a peculiarly in-between identity as vehicles and environments emerging from powered modernity but associated with the proletariat, as well as the urban districts where they lived. Reading literary texts by Arthur Morrison, Ford Madox Ford, and Virginia Woolf, spotlighted here as part of a broader corpus extending from the 1880s to the 1980s, brings the tramways' interstitiality to life. Trams, the literary readings demonstrate, were a contact zone that threatened to overturn separations of class and gender, as well as presaging an expanded future in which the city would be built around the industrial working class. The curtailment of tram operations in 1930s London meant that such a future never came to pass, but literary texts are windows onto its possibility.

Abstract:Metaphors are used in various ways; at the surface for framing a message (systems of language) and below the surface metaphors are related to the ways we think and act. In this paper we will explore, below the surface, the relationship between metaphors and urban studies. From an analysis of metaphors used in urban studies, it will be concluded that, so to speak, every new phenomenon gets a new metaphor around which theoretical notions are developed. Indeed, ‘a 1000 flowers bloom’. This paper will study what urban studies can learn from organization theory. In particular, the question whether the set of metaphors from one of the classics in organizational theory—namely Gareth Morgan’s Images of Organization—can inform urban studies, can be used to grasp, to ‘read’ cities. After exploring theoretical notions, the case study is the SS Rotterdam, a former luxury cruise ship that that came back to Rotterdam to serve as a catalyst for urban development. Different metaphors of Morgan’s set are applied in this case study to get a better understanding of the management, decision making, culture and political system. It will be concluded that Morgan’s set of metaphors looks promising for urban studies and recommendations are made about research lines along which further theoretical and empirical work may be carried out.

Abstract:Schutz’s references to literature and arts in his theoretical works are manifold. But literature and the arts are both a certain kind of a finite province of meaning, that means they are not easily accessible from the paramount reality of everyday life. Now there is another kind of referring to literature: metaphorizing it. Metaphorizing in this view is then a specific kind of border-crossing between different provinces of meaning. That poses a question: What means finiteness of those provinces of meaning, what kind of border crossings are possible? What is the ground for metaphorizing meaning? These question will be answered with one example in view: Schutz’ report to Kaufmann of his first visit of Husserl describing his experience as feeling like Wilhelm Meister at the Society of the Tower. In a first step this metaphor is presented together with some crumbs of metaphor theory. In a second step these crumbs will be connected to Husserl’s concept of experience. After developing a short overview over Schutz’ “finite provinces of meaning,” the relation of experience, metaphors to the intersubjectivity of these provinces in their dependence from writing and printing is discussed.

Abstract:The essay argues that Perdido Street Station, in response to shifts in the capitalist world system, attempts to develop a narrative form that responds to the radical shifts in space and subjectivity embedded in that transformation. By doing so, it points to the historical limitations of the concept of heterotopia developed by Foucault and, in turn, to a transgressive understanding of hybridity dependent on that concept. Instead, the novel is defined by a series of mutually implicated but oppositional terms that define the antagonistic terrain of the city. The novel cannot imagine a line of flight from the complex structures of domination and consent contained in the structures of postmodern capitalism; it richly captures a set of possibilities contained in that stalled dialectic.

The essay places the story in the context of his work as a whole across many different genres, and considers the implications of both the story fragment and the related materials elsewhere as pointers to Beckett's condition of spirit at different times in his life.

Abstract:This essay challenges the (Weberian) thesis that the modern world is a ‘disenchanted’ one. I contend that enchantment has outlasted the Enlightenment; that it endures despite the demise of the ontology that allowed it paradigmatic expression in the sixteenth century writings of Paracelsus. I present two post‐medieval pictures of an enchanted world: the first appears, of all places, in Kant's Critique of Judgment, where a peculiar magic is required of nature if humans are to gain access to the ‘supersensible’ realm of freedom and rational ideas; the second focuses upon the strange beauty of late modernity's admixtures of animal and human, organism and machine, the given and made. Here I use a little Kafka and lot of Deleuze to explore these hybrids as ‘technoenchantments’ operative in a world that fascinates without being expressive of a design or a will. I spotlight contemporary sites of enchantment in order to intensify the experience of them, and thus perhaps to erode the conviction that an undesigned universe calls above all for a cold‐eyed instrumentalism.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the pragmatic analysis of the dialogical texts in the novel “Catch-22” by J. Heller forming the intersection of the absurdist literature representatives’ theoretical views on the surface structure and semantic content of characters’ interpersonal relationships. The research is aimed at identifying the specificity of meaning generation as a mechanism of the author’s poetics of the absurd. In particular, this poetics is systematically reflected in the mechanical verbatim reproduction of a verbal stimulus by a reacting character. Applying a comparison analysis with the relevant contexts from S. Beckett’s absurdist play “Endgame”, in which the opposite trend is observed, it is established that there is a complete reduction of meaning in an effort to focus readers’ attention on the problematic nature of genuine effective communication in the modern world. It is revealed that in the context of J. Heller’s novel and S. Beckett’s play the pragmatic diversity of repetition as a means of constructing characters’ dialogical communication is associated with the contrasting interpretation of philosophical ideas of existentialism. For J. Heller repetition is an epistemological category reflecting the character’s dominant cognitions in the process of orientation in the hostile universe. The author’s implications such as the character’s subconscious fear, his permanent existential anxiety about the need to survive in an extreme situation, increased suspicion or dispassionate indifference towards the interlocutor, the protagonist’s ironic reaction to incompetence, irrationality of the actions of representatives of the authorities and auxiliary units of the flight garrison are revealed. Repetition in the characters’ speech is also associated with the desire to maintain the phatic contact with the interlocutor, whose state of affairs borders on mortal danger. The main character’ dialogical activity as an antihero is considered. It is concluded that in the novel “Catch-22” J. Heller subverts the absurdist literature basic principles, implemented through the reproduction of the characters’ dialogical speech. The author of the novel focuses readers’ attention on the relevance of preserving the traditional postulates of dialogical communication, and on the creative power of language structures and models in interpersonal interaction.
Countertexting One Another: Conceptual Poetics, Flarf, And Derridean Countersignature

Abstract:Using the precedent of Charles Bernstein's spoof on Charles Olson's 'Projective Verse' poetics manifesto as part of a long contextual introduction on issues of literary filiation, influence, and intertextuality, this essay analyses the recent exchanges between conceptualist poetry (Vanessa Place, Kenneth Goldsmith's 'uncreative writing') and 'flarf' (Drew Gardner) in the light of Derrida's twin notions of signature and countersignature. In the process it ties together reading and writing(-as-rereading) in response and co-responsibility in order to theorise the critical notion of 'countertextuality' as a more contemporary inflection of the mechanics of literary interaction known as intertextuality, better suited to characterise the textual interaction between current poetic movements. The critical apparatus and developments in the footnotes are also conceived as a creative enactment of the countertext, whose final instance (the epilogue, or 'Necrologue') is a parodic rewriting performatively exposing the creative impasse and derivativeness of several recent textual productions mimicking Sol LeWitt's 'Sentences on Conceptual Art'. As it moves towards its final critical part, the essay also puts forward, while enacting them, more general views about the relative sterility of some aspects of contemporary poetic debates while gesturing for a possible way out, via Felix Bernstein's 'Notes on Postconceptual Poetry', in order to reclaim 'the genuinely imaginary-affective-intellectual fabric and texture of the poetical'.
