Abstract:In this paper we simplify the definition of the weighted sum Boolean function which used to be inconvenient to compute and use. We show that the new function has essentially the same properties as the previous one. In particular, the bound on the average sensitivity of the weighted sum Boolean function remains unchanged after the simplification.

Abstract:Boolean functions are important primitives in different domains of cryptology, complexity and coding theory. In this paper, we connect the tools from cryptology and complexity theory in the domain of Boolean functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity. It is well known that the polynomial degree of of a Boolean function and its resiliency are directly connected. Using this connection we analyze the polynomial degree-sensitivity values through the lens of resiliency, demonstrating existence and non-existence results of functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity on small number of variables (upto 10). In this process, borrowing an idea from complexity theory, we show that one can implement resilient Boolean functions on a large number of variables with linear size and logarithmic depth. Finally, we extend the notion of sensitivity to higher order and note that the existing construction idea of Nisan and Szegedy (1994) can provide only constant higher order sensitivity when aiming for polynomial degree of $n-\omega(1)$. In this direction, we present a construction with low ($n-\omega(1)$) polynomial degree and super-constant $\omega(1)$ order sensitivity exploiting Maiorana-McFarland constructions, that we borrow from construction of resilient functions. The questions we raise identify novel combinatorial problems in the domain of Boolean functions.

Abstract:Sensitivity is an important complexity measure of Boolean functions. In this paper we present properties of the minimal and maximal sensitivity of the simplified weighted sum function. A simple close formula of the minimal sensitivity of the simplified weighted sum function is obtained. A phenomenon is exhibited that the minimal sensitivity of the weighted sum function is indeed an indicator of large primes, that is, for large prime number p, the minimal sensitivity of the weighted sum function is always equal to one.

Abstract:We explore the $\textit{average-case deterministic query complexity}$ of boolean functions under a $\textit{uniform distribution}$, denoted by $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{ave}(f)$, the minimum average depth of zero-error decision tree computing a boolean function $f$. This measure has found several applications across diverse fields, yet its understanding is limited. We study $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{ave}(f)$ of several functions, including the penalty shoot-out function, symmetric functions, linear threshold functions and the tribes functions. We prove $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{ave}(f) \le \max \{ \log \frac{\mathrm{wt}(f)}{\log n} + O(\log \log \frac{\mathrm{wt}(f)}{\log n}), O(1) \}$ for every $n$-variable boolean function $f$, where $\mathrm{wt}(f)$ denotes the weight (the number of inputs on which $f$ outputs $1$). For any $4\log n \le m(n) \le 2^{n-1}$, we prove the upper bound is tight up to an additive logarithmic term for almost all $n$-variable boolean functions with weight $\mathrm{wt}(f) = m(n)$. Using Håstad's switching lemma or Rossman's switching lemma [Comput. Complexity Conf. 137, 2019], one can derive $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{ave}(f) \leq n(1 - \frac{1}{O(w)})$ or $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{ave}(f) \le n(1 - \frac{1}{O(\log s)})$ for CNF/DNF formulas of width $w$ or size $s$, respectively. We show that, for any $w \ge \log n + \log \log n + 3$, there exists a DNF formula of width $w$ and size $\lceil 2^w / w \rceil$ such that $\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{ave}(f) = n (1 - \frac{\log n}{\Theta(w)})$. In other words, we show the criticality upper bounds $O(w)$ and $O(\log s)$ are tight up to a multiplicative $\log n$ factor, providing evidence on the tightness of the switching lemmas.

Abstract:We study the relationship between the average sensitivity and density of k-CNF formulas via the isoperimetric function $\varphi:[0,1]\to{I\!\!R}$ , $$ \varphi(\mu) = {\rm max} \left\{ \frac{{\rm AS}(F)}{{\rm CNF-width}(F)} \colon{\rm E}[F(x)] = \mu \right\},$$ where the maximum is taken over all Boolean functions F:{0, 1}* → {0, 1} over a finite number of variables and AS(F) is the average sensitivity of F. Building on the work of Boppana [1] and Traxler [2], and answering an open problem of O’Donnell, Amano [3] recently proved that ϕ(μ) ≤ 1 for all μ ∈ [0,1]. In this paper we determine ϕ exactly, giving matching upper and lower bounds. The heart of our upper bound is the Paturi-Pudlák-Zane (PPZ) algorithm for k-SAT [4], which we use in a unified proof that sharpens the three incomparable bounds of Boppana, Traxler, and Amano. We extend our techniques to determine ϕ when the maximum is taken over monotone Boolean functions F, further demonstrating the utility of the PPZ algorithm in isoperimetric problems of this nature. As an application we show that this yields the largest known separation between the average and maximum sensitivity of monotone Boolean functions, making progress on a conjecture of Servedio. Finally, we give an elementary proof that AS(F) ≤ log(s)(1 + o(1)) for functions F computed by an s-clause CNF, which is tight up to lower order terms. This sharpens and simplifies Boppana’s bound of O(logs) obtained using Håstad’s switching lemma.

Abstract:Determining the maximal separation between sensitivity and block sensitivity of Boolean functions is of interest for computational complexity theory. We construct a sequence of Boolean functions with bs(f) = 1/2 s(f)^2 + 1/2 s(f). The best known separation previously was bs(f) = 1/2 s(f)^2 due to Rubinstein. We also report results of computer search for functions with at most 12 variables.

Abstract:In their study of water waves, Massimiliano Berti, Livia Corsi, Alberto Maspero, and Paulo Ventura, came up with two intriguing conjectured identities involving certain weighted sums over the Boolean lattice. They were able to prove the first one, while the second is still open. In this methodological note, we will describe how to generate many terms of these types of weighted sums, and if in luck, evaluate them in closed-form. We were able to use this approach to give a new proof of their first conjecture, and while we failed to prove the second conjecture, we give overwhelming evidence for its veracity. In this second version, we are happy to announce that Mark van Hoeij was able to complete the proof of the second conjecture, by explicitly solving the second-order recurrence mentioned at the end.

Abstract:We employ a regularized relative trace formula to establish a second moment estimate for twisted $L$-functions across all aspects over a number field. Our results yield hybrid subconvex bounds for both Hecke $L$-functions and twisted $L$-functions, comparable to the Weyl bound in suitable ranges. Moreover, we present an application of our results to address the simultaneous nonvanishing problem.

Abstract:Determining the affine equivalence of Boolean functions has significant applications in circuit and cryptography. Previous methods for determining this require a large amount of computation when Boolean functions are bent functions or when the truth table is sparse. This paper presents a new method to determine the affine equivalence based on matrix algebra. By transforming Boolean function to the corresponding matrix representation, we first propose and prove the congruent standard form of Boolean function. It lays the foundation for the determination of equivalence because affine Boolean functions must have the same standard form. Then we find the generators of orthogonal matrix group and symplectic matrix group, which greatly reduce the search space. The computation complexity of our method is o(2(r 2/2+n * (n-r) )), where n is the number of bit operations, and r is the rank of the matrix, which is the product of Boolean-1 matrix of the test Boolean function and its transposition. The experimental results show that our method is useful when the test Boolean function is no more than 7 bits and r is greater than 2.

Abstract:The (low soundness) linearity testing problem for the middle slice of the Boolean cube is as follows. Let $\varepsilon>0$ and $f$ be a function on the middle slice on the Boolean cube, such that when choosing a uniformly random quadruple $(x,y,z ,x\oplus y\oplus z)$ of vectors of $2n$ bits with exactly $n$ ones, the probability that $f(x\oplus y \oplus z) = f(x) \oplus f(y) \oplus f(z)$ is at least $1/2+\varepsilon$. The linearity testing problem, posed by David, Dinur, Goldenberg, Kindler and Shinkar, asks whether there must be an actual linear function that agrees with $f$ on $1/2+\varepsilon'$ fraction of the inputs, where $\varepsilon' = \varepsilon'(\varepsilon)>0$. We solve this problem, showing that $f$ must indeed be correlated with a linear function. To do so, we prove a dense model theorem for the middle slice of the Boolean hypercube for Gowers uniformity norms. Specifically, we show that for every $k\in\mathbb{N}$, the normalized indicator function of the middle slice of the Boolean hypercube $\{0,1\}^{2n}$ is close in Gowers norm to the normalized indicator function of the union of all slices with weight $t = n\pmod{2^{k-1}}$. Using our techniques we also give a more general `low degree test' and a biased rank theorem for the slice.

Abstract:This paper develops upper and lower bounds for the probability of Boolean functions by treating multiple occurrences of variables as independent and assigning them new individual probabilities. We call this approach dissociation and give an exact characterization of optimal oblivious bounds, i.e. when the new probabilities are chosen independent of the probabilities of all other variables. Our motivation comes from the weighted model counting problem (or, equivalently, the problem of computing the probability of a Boolean function), which is #P-hard in general. By performing several dissociations, one can transform a Boolean formula whose probability is difficult to compute, into one whose probability is easy to compute, and which is guaranteed to provide an upper or lower bound on the probability of the original formula by choosing appropriate probabilities for the dissociated variables. Our new bounds shed light on the connection between previous relaxation-based and model-based approximations and unify them as concrete choices in a larger design space. We also show how our theory allows a standard relational database management system (DBMS) to both upper and lower bound hard probabilistic queries in guaranteed polynomial time.

Abstract:We give a structure theorem for Boolean functions on the $p$-biased hypercube which are $\epsilon$-close to degree $d$ in $L_2$, showing that they are close to sparse juntas. Our structure theorem implies that such functions are $O(\epsilon^{C_d} + p)$-close to constant functions. We pinpoint the exact value of the constant $C_d$. We also give an analogous result for monotone Boolean functions on the biased hypercube which are $\epsilon$-close to degree $d$ in $L_2$, showing that they are close to sparse DNFs. Our structure theorems are optimal in the following sense: for every $d,\epsilon,p$, we identify a class $\mathcal{F}_{d,\epsilon,p}$ of degree $d$ sparse juntas which are $O(\epsilon)$-close to Boolean (in the monotone case, width $d$ sparse DNFs) such that a Boolean function on the $p$-biased hypercube is $O(\epsilon)$-close to degree $d$ in $L_2$ iff it is $O(\epsilon)$-close to a function in $\mathcal{F}_{d,\epsilon,p}$.

Towards Strong Reverse Minkowski-type Inequalities for Lattices

Abstract:We present a natural reverse Minkowski-type inequality for lattices, which gives upper bounds on the number of lattice points in a Euclidean ball in terms of sublattice determinants, and conjecture its optimal form. The conjecture exhibits a surprising wealth of connections to various areas in mathematics and computer science, including a conjecture motivated by integer programming by Kannan and Lovász (Annals of Math. 1988), a question from additive combinatorics asked by Green, a question on Brownian motions asked by Saloff-Coste (Colloq. Math. 2010), a theorem by Milman and Pisier from convex geometry (Ann. Probab. 1987), worst-case to average-case reductions in lattice-based cryptography, and more. We present these connections, provide evidence for the conjecture, and discuss possible approaches towards a proof. Our main technical contribution is in proving that our conjecture implies the $\ell_2$ case of the Kannan and Lovász conjecture. The proof relies on a novel convex relaxation for the covering radius, and a rounding procedure for based on "uncrossing" lattice subspaces.

Abstract:Trillas, Cubillo and Castiñeira [Artificial Intelligence 117 (2000) 255–275] defined several interesting operators in orthocomplemented lattices. These operators give a quite general algebraic model for conjectures, consequences and hypotheses. We present some properties of conjectures, consequences and hypotheses in orthocomplemented lattices, which complement or improve the results by Trillas, Cubillo and Castiñeira. Furthermore, we introduce the graded versions of these notions in the setting of residuated lattices and derive some of their properties. These graded notions provide certain mathematical tools for modelling conjectures, consequences and hypotheses in the environment where uncertain and vague information is involved.

Abstract:Let $(\mathcal{A}_i)_{i \in [s]}$ be a sequence of dense subsets of the Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ and let $p$ be a prime. We show that if $s$ is assumed to be superpolynomial in $n$ then we can find distinct $i,j$ such that the two distributions of every mod-$p$ linear form on $\mathcal{A}_i$ and $\mathcal{A}_j$ are almost positively correlated. We also prove that if $s$ is merely assumed to be sufficiently large independently of $n$ then we may require the two distributions to have overlap bounded below by a positive quantity depending on $p$ only.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an average-case efficient algorithm to resolve the problem of determining whether two Boolean functions in trace representation are identical. Firstly, we introduce a necessary and sufficient condition for null Boolean functions in trace representation, which can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known additive Hilbert-90 theorem. Based on this condition, we propose an algorithmic method with preprocessing to address the original problem. The worst-case complexity of the algorithm is still exponential; its average-case performance, however, can be improved. We prove that the expected complexity of the refined procedure is O(n), if the coefficients of input functions are chosen i.i.d. according to the uniform distribution over F-2n ; therefore, it performs well in practice.
