Abstract:Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidation of terminal olefins to methyl ketones has emerged as an attractive strategy for organic synthesis. Here we report the Pd(II)-catalyzed selective oxidation of olefins using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant and 2-(1H-indazol-1-yl)quinoline as the ligand. A wide range of olefins were well tolerated in this reaction system to provide methyl ketones, whereas the presence of Ac2O initiated the oxo-acyloxylation to afford the α-acetoxyacetone products. Isotope labeling studies and active-intermediate-capture experiments were performed to elucidate the underlying selective reaction mechanism. Notably, the generation of α-acetoxyacetone products involves the palladium enolate intermediate while the methyl ketone products were generated through the most commonly proposed alkylperoxide intermediates, followed by 1,2-hydride migration.

Abstract:A facile and highly chemoselective protocol for the synthesis of benzil derivatives has been developed by oxidation of stilbenes in an I-2-H2O system under air. Notably, the method was applicable to 26 examples and provided up to 98% yield, avoiding the use of acid, metal catalysts and so on.

Abstract:An expeditious method to access 2-aminobenzoxazoles and 2-aminobenzothiazoles from various substituted 2-aminophenols and 2-aminothiophenols, respectively, with isoselenocyanates in a one pot procedure is reported. Elemental Se precipitates nearly quantitatively in the reaction without any deselenizing agent and it can be reused. A possible mechanism for the formation of the target products is proposed.

Abstract:The reaction of methylenecyclopropanes with diphenyl diselenide promoted by visible light was investigated and a series of 2,4-diphenylselenyl-1-butenes was prepared under mild conditions. Interestingly, with the addition of oxidant such as dibenzoyl peroxide, 1-(phenylselenyl)cyclobutanols were obtained.

Abstract:A straightforward and efficient electrochemical method for the anodic oxidative selenenylation of 2-(2-arylallyl)phenols and a 2-(3-arylbut-3-en-1-yl)phenol with diselenides under ambient air conditions has been outlined. This method allows for the synthesis of selenyl-dihydrobenzofurans and a chromane featuring a sterically hindered tetrasubstituted carbon center, demonstrated through 25 examples with yields reaching up to 98%. Initial mechanistic investigations suggest the likely participation of pivotal seleniranium cation species in regulating the reactivity. Abstract:A simple, one-pot, phosgene-free approach to a series of unsymmetrical 2-pyridyl ureas starting from 2-aminopyridine and various aromatic amines is reported for the first time. The procedure employs inexpensive selenium as the catalyst, and carbon monoxide (instead of phosgene) as the carbonyl reagent. The products are obtained in moderate to good yields via selenium-catalyzed oxidative cross-carbonylation of the substrate amines in the presence of oxygen. The selenium functions as a phase-transfer catalyst and can be recovered easily and reused without any significant degradation of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The combination of zirconocene-mediated coupling of silylated alkynes with a protonation-desilylation or bromination-desilylation process afforded otherwise unavailable butadiene derivatives. When (E,E)-2,3-dialkyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-butadienes were treated with 3 equiv of Br-2 in CH2Cl2, (E)-2,3-dialkyl-1,1,4,4-tetrabromo-2-butenes were obtained in excellent yields with perfect stereoselectivity.

Abstract:We report a light-promoted hydroselenation of alkenes with high anti-Markovnikov selectivity. Spectroscopic, kinetic, and computational mechanistic studies indicate that blue light activates an aryl diselenide to generate a seleno radical; this radical adds into an alkene to form a β-seleno carbon radical. Subsequent hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) generates the linear selenide with high selectivity in preference to the branched isomer. These studies reveal a unique β-selenium effect, where a selenide β to a carbon radical imparts high anti-selectivity for radical addition through delocalization of the HAT transition state.

Abstract:We have previously reported an efficient synthesis of beta-phenylselenium-substituted butenolides via electrophilic cyclization of 2,3-allenoates with PhSeCl in aqueous MeCN. However, when 2,3-allenoates were treated with PhSeCl in MeCN, 3-phenylseleno-4-oxo-2(E)-alkenoates were formed unexpectedly. The addition of Li2CO3 improved the yield and the selectivity of the reaction. A possible mechanism involving a decomposition of selenate esters was proposed.

Abstract:beta-Phenylseleno-alpha-tolylsulfonyl-substituted alkenes were synthesized via the three-component conjugate -nucleophilic addition of acetylenic sulfones, phenylselenomagnesium bromide, and carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes, aliphatic ketones, or alpha,beta-unsaturated enals or enones. The reaction is highly regio- and stereoselective with moderate to good yields. Functionalized allylic alcohols were obtained in the case of aldehydes and aliphatic ketones. In the case of alpha,beta-unsaturated enones, functionalized allylic alcohols or functionalized gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones were obtained, depending on the structures of the ketones.

Abstract:The diphenyldiselenide catalyzed oxidation of cyclohexene by hydrogen peroxide led to cyclohexane-1,2-diol with high conversion and selectivity. Compared with traditional metal catalyst, selenium catalysts are cheaper and less harmful to environment. This synthetic method is also clean and highly atom-economic. Therefore, this reaction is highly applicable.

Abstract:The DBU-promoted three-component cascade annulation of 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanenitriles, (E)-chalcones and elemental selenium have been proposed for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted selenophenes. Preliminary mechanism explorations and photochemical performance studies of selenophenes have also been conducted. This protocol possesses some advantages over traditional methods for synthesizing selenophenes in terms of readily available and inexpensive substrates, metal catalyst-free, simple and easy to operate reaction conditions, and step and atom economy.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of (E)-ethyl 2-oxo-4-arylbut-3-enoate with [NH2Me2](+)[{RuCl [(S)-SunPhos]}2(mu-Cl-3] gave ethyl 2-hydroxy-4-arylbutyrate with 94-96% ee. Further investigation has proved that the hydrogenation proceeded via a sequential hydrogenation of C = O and C = C bonds, which is sensitive to the reaction temperature. Hydrolysis of ethyl 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyrate (ee 93%) provided the 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid with 81 % yield at 99% ee after a single recrystallization from 1, 2-dichloroethylene.

Abstract:A Hoveyda-Grubbs (HG)-type olefin metathesis complex with a selenoether moiety at the terminal of phenoxy moiety was synthesized. The complex showed a Se-coordination to the ruthenium center, resulting in its higher thermostability than the parent HG catalyst. The Se-coordinative property enhanced product yields in the ring-closing metathesis of N-tosyldiallylamine in the presence of methanol. The large activation enthalpy observed in the reaction with butyl vinyl ether indicated an increased contribution of “dissociative mechanism” during the initiation of the catalytic cycle. Introducing coordinative atoms or functional groups at the terminal of the phenoxy moiety is a useful strategy to regulate the thermostability of HG-type olefin metathesis catalysts.
