Abstract:In hydrodynamics one often meets the mixed initial-boundary value problem for first-order quasilinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws. In certain situations, for example, the piston problem, the conditions of C 0 compatibility may fail at the corner where the initial axis meets the boundary (see [22], [26], [50], and [84]). Moreover, one also uses this kind of problem in numerical analysis (see [88] and [94]).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the mixed initial-boundary value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in a half-unbounded domain {(t, x)\ t greater than or equal to 0, x greater than or equal to 0}. Under the assumption that, the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness of C-1 solution with small and decaying initial data. Some applications are given for the system of the planar motion of an elastic string.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to initial boundary value problems for quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems in a domain with characteristic boundary. It extends the theory on linear symmetric hyperbolic systems established by Friedrichs to the nonlinear case. The concept on regular characteristics and dissipative boundary conditions are given for quasilinear hyperbolic systems. Under some assumptions, an existence theorem for such initial boundary value problems is obtained. The theorem can also be applied to the Euler system of compressible flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the C0 boundedness of solution implies the global existence and uniqueness of C1 solution to the mixed initial-boundary value problem for linearly degenerate, reducible quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions and we show by an example that the C0 norm of solution may blow up in a finite time. This gives the mechanism of the formation of singularities caused by the interaction of boundary conditions with nonlinear hyperbolic waves. The same result is still valid for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of rich type.

Combining the method of constructing Green functions with operators defined piecewise, the existence result of positive solutions to a singular second order three-point boundary value problem is established. The nonlinearity can be allowed to change sign.

Abstract:Initial-boundary value problems are considered for homogeneous parabolic systems with Dini-continuous coefficients and zero initial conditions in a semibounded plane domain with a nonsmooth lateral boundary admitting cusps, on which general boundary conditions with variable coefficients are given. A theorem on unique classical solvability of these problems in the space of functions that are continuous and bounded together with their first spatial derivatives in the closure of the domain is proved by applying the boundary integral equation method. A representation of the resulting solutions in the form of vector single-layer potentials is given.

Abstract:We deal with a linear hyperbolic differential operator of the second order on a bounded planar domain with a smooth boundary. We establish a well-posedness result in case where a mixed, Dirichlet-Neumann, condition is prescribed on the boundary. We focus on the case of a non-homogeneous Dirichlet data and a homogeneous Neumann one. The presented proof is based on a functional theoretical approach and on an approximation argument. Moreover, this work discuss an improvement of a result concerning the range of some operators related to the considered hyperbolic PDE yielding characterizations for the range space of these operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonlinear initial–boundary Riemann problem and the generalized nonlinear initial–boundary Riemann problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with nonlinear boundary conditions on the domain {(t,x)|t⩾0,x⩾0}. Under the assumption that each positive eigenvalue is either linearly degenerate or genuinely nonlinear, we get the existence and uniqueness of the self-similar solution to the nonlinear initial–boundary Riemann problem and of the global piecewise C1 solution containing only shocks and (or) contact discontinuities to the corresponding generalized nonlinear initial–boundary Riemann problem. It shows that the self-similar solution to the nonlinear initial–boundary Riemann problem possesses the global structural stability.

Abstract:Studied here is an initial-boundary-value problem for the “good” Boussinesq equation on the half line. It is shown that this initial-boundary-value problem, when the initial-boundary-data satisfy certain compatible conditions, is well-posed in the L2-based Sobolev space Hs(R+) for s>12. In addition, the mapping that associated to appropriate initial-boundary-data the corresponding solution is analytic as a function between appropriate Banach spaces.

Abstract:When one characteristic of the system is linearly degenerate, under suitable boundary conditions, we get the existence of traveling wave solutions located on the corresponding characteristic trajectory to the one-sided mixed initial-boundary value problem. When the system is linearly degenerate, by introducing the semi-global normalized coordinates, we derive the related formulas of wave decomposition to prove the stability of traveling wave solutions corresponding to all leftward and the rightmost characteristic trajectories. Finally, for the traveling wave solutions corresponding to other rightward characteristic trajectories, some examples show their possible instability. Copyright (c) 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the initial boundary value problem for a class of higher-order n -dimensional nonlinear pseudo-parabolic equations which do not have positive energy and come from the soil mechanics, the heat conduction, and the nonlinear optics. By the mountain pass theorem we first prove the existence of nonzero weak solution to the static problem, which is the important basis of evolution problem, then based on the method of potential well we prove the existence of global weak solution to the evolution problem.

Abstract:We consider initial–boundary value problems for homogeneous parabolic systems with coefficients satisfying the double Dini condition with zero initial conditions in a semibounded plane domain with nonsmooth lateral boundary. The method of boundary integral equations is used to prove a theorem on the unique classical solvability of such problems in the space of functions that are continuous together with their first spatial derivative in the closure of the domain. An integral representation of the obtained solutions is given. It is shown that the condition for the solvability of the posed problems considered in the paper is equivalent to the well-known complementarity condition.

Abstract:The known theory on the one-side exact boundary controllability for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems requires that the unknown variables are suitably coupled or satisfy the Group Property in boundary conditions at the non-control side(see[5],[10]). In this paper we illustrate, with an inspiring example, that the one-side exact boundary controllability can still be realized by means of a suitable coupling among the unknown variables in the quasilinear hyperbolic system itself instead of in boundary conditions.
