Planning for Sustainable and Ecological Urban Environment: Current Trends and Future Developments

Abstract:Cities are important areas for human activities, where urban ecology provides important support for economic and social development such as water resources, pollution purification and climate regulation. Cities occupy only 3% of the earth’s land area but provide housing for more than 2/3 of the population. A large amount of resources (60–80% energy consumption) are consumed in cities, while a vast number of wastes and around 75% of carbon emissions are generated and emitted into the environment, creating a huge impact on the urban environment and ecology. As cities become increasingly large, the disorderly development of complex urban elements (e.g. buildings, traffic, landscape and industry) further exacerbates the regulation imbalance of urban ecology and environment. To achieve the ultimate goal of harmonious coexistence between people and nature, the urban production space, living space and ecological space must be planned and designed scientifically and reasonably. Urban planning is such a process to design the land use and the built environment, which is essential for creating a healthy and liveable, green and sustainable urban ecology. By using systematic thinking and holistic concepts, the scientific and reasonable layout of urban elements can reduce adverse effects on the urban environment from the beginning. However, current urban planning and environmental planning are often disconnected. Traditional urban planning focuses more on spatial layout and morphology with less focus on the primary position of the ecological environment in urban planning. Moreover, the contradiction between ecological and social aspects, history protection and future development, and interdisciplinary and technology integration is not well balanced in urban planning. Thus, the multi-dimensional conflict involved in ecological urban planning is a challenge that needs to be addressed urgently. This paper discusses the current research trends and provides some development recommendations for a sustainable and ecological urban environment.
