On the "State-Church Relationship" in Modern China Transitional Era:a Reflection on Kang Youwei`s "Confucianism" Movement

Abstract:In recent years,the topic of "state-church relationship" has become a focus in the academic world.In the transitional era of modern China,both supporters and opponents of "Confucianism" Movement were confronted with the same question,that is,how to deal with the "state-church relationship" issue and reconstruct the new "state-church order".According to the western interpretation,"state-church relationship" refers to the one between politics and religion,thus having different representation form in terms of "integration" and "separation";while in traditional Chinese culture,Confucianism means a moralized system of the Confucianists,but not in a strict sense of religion.Therefore,Caesaropapism,which means the integration of state and church,does not fit in a Chinese context.The proposal of Zhang Hao that what Zhu Xi sought for was an ideal for the social integration of state and church in the three ancient Chinese dynasties due to his change from dual to unitary concerning the state-church relationship.However,there seems to be some textual misinterpretation of his viewpoint.In fact,it is Zhang Xuecheng who made a clear claim of integration of state and church without any response ever since the Han Dynasty.When it came to the Qing Dynasty,the topic on state and church won a wide popularity nationwide.Kang Youwei,who advocated Confucianism during the Reform Movements in the year of Wuxu (1898),held the view of "separation and coexistence of state and church",which shows his disagreement with European Caesaropapism in Middle Ages.In addition,his proposal of turning Confucianism into a state religion,manifested by the "Confucianism" Movement characterized by establishing Confucianism a state position,resulted in a negative effect in cultural autocracy.It is unnecessary and impossible to bring Confucianism into a state religion under the context of the collapse of monarchy.
