Martensitic transformation of Ni55.30Fe17.60Ga27.10 magnetic shape memory alloy

Abstract:Effect of heat treatment on the microstructures and martensitic phase transformation of Ni55.30Fe17.60Ga27.10 alloys was studied. Ni55.30Fe17.60Ga27.10 alloys underwent a thermoelastic martensitic transformation during heating and cooling. The boundaries of martensitic variants of arc-melted Ni55.30Fe17.60Ga27.10 alloys were blurring, and after heating 800°C for 4 h under the Ar atmosphere, the martensitic variants became distinct and straight. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results shown that the characteristic temperatures of martensitic transformation, Ms, Mf, As and Af, were 43.24°C, 36.72°C, 46.84°C and 51.83°C, respectively. Compared with arc-melted alloy, the temperatures, Ms and Mf, increased slightly, and on the contrary, As and Af decreased slightly, and the heat hysteresis became smaller. XRD verified the martensite was 14M structure.
