Abstract: Let R be Alexandroff's long ray. We prove that the homotopy classes of continuous maps R^n \to R are in bijection with the antichains of P({1,...,n}). The proof uses partition properties of continuous maps R^n \to R. We also provide a description of $[X,R]$ for some other non-metrizable manifolds X.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to calculate the homotopy classes between certain non - metric manifolds. Specifically, the author mainly focuses on the homotopy classes of continuous mappings from \( \mathbb{R}^n \) to Alexandroff's long ray \( R \), and proves that there is a bijective relationship between these homotopy classes and the antichains of the set \( P(\{1, \ldots, n\}) \). In addition, the paper also explores the homotopy classes of some other non - metric manifolds.
### Main Problems
1. **Calculating Homotopy Classes**:
- Calculate the homotopy classes of continuous mappings from \( \mathbb{R}^n \) to Alexandroff's long ray \( R \).
- Prove that there is a bijective relationship between these homotopy classes and the antichains of the set \( P(\{1, \ldots, n\}) \).
2. **Generalizing Existing Results**:
- Generalize the results of D. Gauld, who solved the case of \( n = 1 \).
3. **Studying Other Non - metric Manifolds**:
- Explore the homotopy classes of some other non - metric manifolds, such as the long line \( L \) and certain specific pipes \( P_S \).
### Motivations
1. **Topology Category**:
- Any manifold is compactly generated, so according to G.W. Whitehead's theory, they are suitable for the natural category of homotopy theory.
2. **Non - contractibility**:
- The manifolds studied provide a class of spaces \( X \) such that \( \Pi_i(X)=0 \) for each \( i\in\omega \), but \( [X, X] \) is finite and has at least two elements, so \( X \) is not contractible.
3. **Simplicity of Proof Methods**:
- The proof methods are completely based on basic facts, such as the properties of countable ordinals, although the title may suggest more complex homotopy problems.
### Main Results
1. **Theorem 1**:
- Two continuous mappings \( f, g:\mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow R \) are homotopic if and only if their cofinal classes \( C(f) = C(g) \) are equal.
2. **Theorem 2**:
- There is a bijective relationship between the homotopy classes \( [\mathbb{R}^n, R] \) of continuous mappings \( \mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow R \) and the antichains of the set \( P(\{1, \ldots, n\}) \).
### Other Results
- **Theorem 3**:
- There is a bijective relationship between the homotopy classes of the long line \( L^n \) to \( R \) and the antichains of the set \( P_a(\{1, \ldots, n\}) \).
- \( [\mathbb{R}^n, L] \) is the union of \( [\mathbb{R}^n, L_+] \) and \( [\mathbb{R}^n, L_-] \), where the bounded mappings in \( L_+ \) and \( L_- \) are identified as the same.
- **Theorem 4**:
- For certain specific pipes \( P_S \), there is a bijective relationship between their homotopy classes to \( R \) and the antichains of the partially ordered set \( \langle \{1, \ldots, k\}, \prec \rangle \).
### Conclusion
Through detailed proofs and technical means, the paper successfully solves the problem of calculating the homotopy classes between non - metric manifolds and provides specific classification methods. These results not only generalize the existing research but also lay the foundation for further exploring the homotopy classes of other non - metric manifolds.
