Abstract:Internal gear pumps have significant advantages over other types of pump, such like high operating pressure, efficient transmission of energy, long service life, little pressure ripples and low noise emissions. Due to the nature of water, such as, low viscosity, poor lubricity and high vapour pressure, the performance of water hydraulic internal gear pumps is totally different from the oil ones. Using tap water as working medium, the experiments of internal gear pump are implemented and the performances are obtained. The results indicate the floating plates are the key components of water hydraulic internal gear pumps which decide the efficiency and service life of the pumps. Then, the pressing forces acting on the floating plates and the contact stresses are calculated. Finally, the causes of wear failure of floating plates are investigated and some design principles in water hydraulic internal gear pumps are also proposed.

Abstract:High pressure pump is one of the key components in Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination project. This paper introduced the development of an axial piston pump prototype which used as a high-pressure pump in SWRO desalination system. After the structure and technique data of the pump were illustrated, the main manufacturing processes of the prototype were introduced. The performance test of the prototype was carried out on an integrated water hydraulics test rig. After this, the prototype was used as a high-pressure pump on a SWRO experimental system. The test and application results prove that the pump is more efficient and quiet than other types, and is suitable for being used as high pressure pump in small and medium scale SWRO desalination project.

Abstract:As one of the crucial components for power supply, the propulsion system is of great significance to the advance speed, noise performances, stabilities and other associated critical performances of underwater vehicles. Developing towards much higher advance speed, the underwater vehicles make more critical demands on the performances of the propulsion system. Basically, the increased advance speed requires the significantly raised rotation speed of the propulsion system, which would result in the deteriorated cavitation performances and consequently limit the thrust and efficiency of the whole system. Compared with the traditional propeller, the water jet pump offers more favourite cavitation, propulsion efficiency and other associated performances. The present research focuses on the cavitation performances of the waterjet pump blade profile in expectation of enlarging its advantages in high-speed vehicle propulsion. Based on the specifications of a certain underwater vehicle, the design method of the waterjet blade with high cavitation performances was investigated in terms of numerical simulation.

Abstract:The rapid development of industrial and information technology is driving the demand to improve the applicability and hydraulic performance of centrifugal pumps in various applications. Enhancing the rotational speed of pumps can simultaneously increase the head and reduce the impeller diameter, thereby reducing the pump size and weight and also improving pump efficiency. This paper reviews the current application status of high-speed pumps using low-temperature thermosensitive fluids, which have been applied in fields such as novel energy-saving cooling technologies, aerospace, chemical industries, and cryogenic engineering. Due to operational constraints and thermal effects, there are inherent challenges that still need to be addressed for high-speed pumps. Based on numerical simulation and experimental research for different working fluids, the results regarding cavitation within the inducer have been categorized and summarized. Improvements to cavitation models, the mechanism of unsteady cavity shedding, vortex generation and cavitation suppression, and the impact of cavitation on pump performance were examined. Subsequently, the thermal properties and cavitation thermal effects of low-temperature thermosensitive fluids were analyzed. In response to the application requirements of pump-driven two-phase cooling systems in data centers, a high-speed refrigerant pump employing hydrodynamic bearings has been proposed. Experimental results indicate that the prototype achieves a head of 56.5 m and an efficiency of 36.1% at design conditions (n = 7000 rpm, Q = 1.5 m3/h). The prototype features a variable frequency motor, allowing for a wider operational range, and has successfully passed both on/off and continuous operation tests. These findings provide valuable insights for improving the performance of high-speed refrigerant pumps in relevant applications.

Abstract:Cavitation performance improvement of large hydraulic machinery such as pump and turbine has been a hot topic for decades. During the design process of the pumps, in order to minimize size, weight and cost centrifugal and mixed-flow pump impellers are required to operate at the highest possible rotational speed. The rotational speed is limited by the phenomenon of cavitation. The hydraulic model of high-speed mixed-flow pump with large flow rate and high pumping head, which was designed based on the traditional method, always involves poor cavitation performance. In this paper, on the basis of the same hydraulic design parameters, two hydraulic models of high-speed mixed-flow pump were designed by using different methods, in order to investigate the cavitation and hydraulic performance of the two models, the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was adopted for internal flow simulation of the high specific speed mixed-flow pump. Based on the results of numerical simulation, the influences of impeller parameters and three-dimensional configuration on pressure distribution of the blades' suction surfaces were analyzed. The numerical simulation results shows a better pressure distribution and lower pressure drop around the leading edge of the improved model. The research results could provide references to the design and optimization of the anti-cavitation blade.

Abstract:Purpose For moderate pressure and high pressure gear pumps, the temperature failure problem of bearings is now of considerable concern because of their heavy loads. However, the compact structure and the efficiency consideration make it extremely difficult to improve the bearing cooling. A self-circulating oil bearing system is developed for gear pumps with self-lubricating bearings to solve this problem. The oil is aspirated in from the low pressure chamber of the gear pump and discharged to the same chamber by using the pressure difference in the journal bearing, thus achieving the self-circulation. Design/methodology/approach An experiment test rig has been built for the feasibility study. The oil flow rate under different speeds has been recorded. Furthermore, the temperatures of the bearings with or without the oil circulation have been compared. Additionally, the oil flow in the test rig has been simulated using computational fluid dynamics codes. Findings The experimental and numerical results agree well. The experimental results indicate that the oil flow rate increases approximately linearly with the speed and the bearing temperature can be lowered successfully. The calculation results indicate that the bearing load capacity is nearly the same. Both the experimental and numerical studies establish that the self-circulating oil bearing system works successfully. Originality value As far as the authors know, it is the first time to find that the self-circulation can be built using the pressure difference in the bearing oil film, and this principle can be applied in the cooling and lubrication of the gear pumps to solve the temperature failure problem.
Optimal design of centrifugal pump with large power and high pressure

Abstract:Aimed at the requirements of centrifugal pumps with large power and high pressure, such as high head, large flow, high rotation speed, high operation reliability, and so on, some key technologies were studied through hydraulic model design, rotor dynamics design and safety design of high pressure devices. The hydraulic model of pumps was designed by applying CFD technology to optimize flow parts, meanwhile the influence of the tip clearance flow on the dynamics of the rotor systems was considered. In the design of rotor dynamics, the twist vibration characteristics of units shafting and critical speed were analyzed in order to ensure rotor rigidity design and unit operation reliability, especially, the "wet" critical speed analysis was introduced when pump practical operation conditions were considered. In the optimization design of high-pressure shell based on stress classification, the theory of pressure vessel design was introduced and 3D numerical simulation was carried out. These key technologies have been successfully applied in high-pressure pump with 3800 kW power, which provides a reference for development of centrifugal pump with large power and high pressure in domestic.

Abstract:In order to analyse the hydrodynamic performance and cavitation characteristic of a high-speed mixed-flow pump during transient operations, experimental studies were carried out. The transient hydrodynamic performance and cavitation characteristics of the mixed-flow pump with guide vane during start-up operation processes were tested on the pump performance test-bed. Performance tests of the pump were carried out under various inlet pressures and speed-changing operations. The real-time instantaneous external characteristics such as rotational speed, hydraulic head, flow rate, suction pressure and discharge pressure of the pump were measured. Based on the experimental results, the effect of fluid acceleration on the hydrodynamic performances and cavitation characteristics of the mixed-flow pump were analysed and evaluated.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of low efficiency and high noise level of a vertical double-stage self-priming pump, the new volute chamber and annular sealing of impeller are presented on basis of the traditional self-priming pump under the premise of ensuring the self-priming performance. The internal flow field of the tradition self-priming pump and a novel structure were numerically simulated using the CFD tool, the internal flow structure and performance were analyzed. The matching structures between the volute and the liquid storage chamber were optimized , and the pump performance under annular sealing with different shapes and sizes was also analyzed. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, the results show that the L type annular sealing, compared to the traditional annular sealing structure, improved the volume efficiency of the self-priming pump obviously; New volute chamber and liquid storage chamber are better matched to reduce the hydraulic loss and improve efficiency and stability of the double-stage self-priming pump.

Abstract:A low specific speed pipeline pump is researched to improve work performance through several certain modifications. The target is to raise the pump's head up to 80m and increase its total efficiency to 26.5% when the volume flow rate is 6.3m3/h with a rotatory speed of 2960rpm. CFD Numerical simulation is employed to predict the hydraulic performance of the pump. The volute is redesigned and splitters are imported to change the structure of the impeller. A lot of factors are taken into account, for instance number of vanes, forms of vanes, width of the volute, shape of volute's cross section, etc. These transformations ameliorate the distribution of pressure and velocity in the impeller and volute that finally increase the pump's hydraulic efficiency. The impeller trim has also been made according to the affinity law to fatherly decrease the disc friction which causes pump's mechanical loss and then achieves the optimization goal finally. It is a practical case in low specific speed pump's optimization and conclusions given at the end may be experience in the design of this sort of device.

Abstract:In order to solve the blocking and backflow problems of high pressure coal conveying pump during its practical operation and improve its conveying efficiency,the dynamic numerical simulation of three-dimensional unsteady viscous incompressible flow in the experimental facility was conducted with the dynamic mesh model and UDF(User Define Functions) offered by FLUENT.This method breaks the limitations of static analysis and can simulate the dynamic process of the internal flow field in the pump more actually.During the periodic motion of the pump,the corresponding flow field variation can be obtained,and the simulation results agree well with practical operation results.With adjusting the pump structural size and its motional parameters,optimization of simulation was conducted,and the operation effect of the pump was improved,which solve the blocking problem and alleviate the backflow basically.This work may provide the technical foundation for domestic production of high pressure coal conveying pump.

Abstract:The methods of Structure design and hydraulic design of high-speed centrifugal pumps for handling small-flow high-head liquids are described taking GSB-6/480×2 pump whose process parameters are capacity Q = 3.7 m 3/h and head H = 480 m as an example. Variable-pitch inducer and complex impeller are used in structure, and the flowing-increasing design and optimum hydraulic design are carried out in theory. The hydraulic tests and application in Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co. LTD show that the structure and hydraulic design proposed are reasonable and practical.

Abstract:The influence of angle matching in rotor-stator interference (RSI) zone on natural circulation resistance (NCR) of circulating pump in natural circulation condition is illustrated by numerical method, and the analysis and optimization method of natural circulation based on loss coefficient curve are established through experiments. The mechanism and analysis formula of runaway speed are extracted, and the distribution diagram of Euler head density function (EHDF) is obtained to carry out image processing and analysis of secondary flow. Then, the optimal design interval of setting angle of impeller outlet under low flow resistance is acquired. As for the natural circulation loss of static parts, the optimal design interval of guide vane inlet angle and outlet angle with low flow resistance is obtained by analyzing the EHDF distribution diagram of the whole flow parts, which accounts for the position and reason of resistance. In this paper, the mechanism between runaway speed and loss coefficient curve is revealed and the resistance is optimized through the design and analysis of the RSI region, which provides theoretical methods for the analysis of the impeller performance of axial-flow circulating pump. Furthermore, it is a reference for the optimization design of natural circulation system.

Abstract:Vortex pumps have good non-clogging performance and are widely used in the fluid transportation of food, sewage treatment, and mineral and coal slurry transportation. In order to design and manufacture a vortex pump with good performance and establish a method of optimum design, we must master the internal flow rules of the pump. Based on the self-design vortex pump (32WB8-12) experiment, the discharge-pump head (qv-H), discharge-pump shaft power (qv-P), discharge-pump efficiency (qv-η), and discharge-critical net positive suction head (qv-NPSHc) curves are obtained, and the qv-NPSHc curve shows an opposite tendency compared with the centrifugal pump. With the mathematical model selected with respect to the optimal condition, the three-dimensional internal flow within the vortex pump has been numerically simulated by a renormalization group k-ε (RNG k-ε) turbulence model. The static pressure (ps) and velocity distribution of the impeller and the middle section of the volute at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° are obtained, and the performance curves have been fitted using a CFX-calculated energy parameter. It was illustrated that the velocity field is relatively disordered and the flow in the impeller region is of a forced vortex character. The flow in the volute is similar to that of the combined vortex with backflow, which is a non-axisymmetric unsteady flow with quite high turbulence intensity. These factors are the main reasons for the relatively low efficiency of the vortex pump. The measurement of flow field in volute with a five-hole probe was conducted, and it is demonstrated that the numerical results are in good agreement with the flow field measurement data. An upward pressure gradient forms in the portal area of the impeller, and it is confirmed that the lowest pressure point is located in the upper position of the impeller hub. It is revealed that for the vortex pump to have advanced suction and anti-cavitation performance, the lowest pressure in the pump should be −4 × 104 Pa and it should be located at the center of the vortex chamber cavity.

Abstract:The pumped storage power plants play an irreplaceable role in optimizing the energy structure of various countries, promoting the development and utilization of new energy sources, and protecting the ecological environment. The water heads of the pumped storage power plants are very high and generate high pressure pulsations on the pump-turbine units. The pressure pulsation of rotor-stator interaction is one of the major pressure excitations, which can induce high stress on the rotating structures and stationary structures of the pump-turbine units. This paper investigates the dynamic characteristic of unsteady flow of the high-head reversible pump-turbine unit under a high pressure pulsation operating condition by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and analyses the characteristics of pressure pulsation caused by rotor-stator interaction (RSI) in the time domain and the frequency domain. The results reveal that high pressure pulsations in the pump-turbine flow channels are related to the rotational frequency, the number of runner blades, and the number of guide vanes. The design improvement suggestions are proposed to reduce the pressure pulsation of the turbine unit and provide references for other pump-turbines. The calculated pressure files can be used to perform flow-induced dynamic stresses in both rotating and stationary structures of the pump-turbine unit.

Abstract:Hydropower has been the leading renewable source and cheapest ways to generate electrical energy in the world. In recent years, there has been a major upsurge in the hydropower development because of the use of pump as turbine (PAT). However, the operational reliability of a PAT is greatly affected by the unsteady flow fields; therefore, it is important to examine the unsteady flow behavior which can be used as a reference to reduce the noise, vibration, and cavitation performance for centrifugal pumps working as turbines. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the unsteady flow fields by analyzing the distribution of the pressure pulsations using both numerical and experimental measurements in a PAT operating in pump mode. Firstly, the three‐dimensional (3D) unsteady flow equations were solved using SST <i>k‐</i>ω turbulence model during the numerical calculations. Secondly, the numerical results of the hydraulic pump performance were validated by the experimental measurements for numerical accuracy. Lastly, pressure transducers are positioned at certain monitoring points to measure the pressure in the PAT investigated. The numerical and experimental results show that the main frequency of the pressure pulsation is equal to the blade frequency, and as it deviates from the design operating condition, the magnitude of pressure pulsation intensifies. Furthermore, the impeller eye marked the lowest pressure coefficients especially at the design condition and makes it highly susceptible to cavitation. High pressure coefficients were obviously seen at the pressure side on the blade surface closer to the trailing edge at all studied operating conditions. Meanwhile, the rotor‐stator interaction generated the highest pressure pulsation distribution at the volute tongue. Thus, modification of the volute tongue is an optimal approach of reducing the pressure pulsation intensity in the volute and pump as a whole.
