Abstract:Vortex pumps have good non-clogging performance and are widely used in the fluid transportation of food, sewage treatment, and mineral and coal slurry transportation. In order to design and manufacture a vortex pump with good performance and establish a method of optimum design, we must master the internal flow rules of the pump. Based on the self-design vortex pump (32WB8-12) experiment, the discharge-pump head (qv-H), discharge-pump shaft power (qv-P), discharge-pump efficiency (qv-η), and discharge-critical net positive suction head (qv-NPSHc) curves are obtained, and the qv-NPSHc curve shows an opposite tendency compared with the centrifugal pump. With the mathematical model selected with respect to the optimal condition, the three-dimensional internal flow within the vortex pump has been numerically simulated by a renormalization group k-ε (RNG k-ε) turbulence model. The static pressure (ps) and velocity distribution of the impeller and the middle section of the volute at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° are obtained, and the performance curves have been fitted using a CFX-calculated energy parameter. It was illustrated that the velocity field is relatively disordered and the flow in the impeller region is of a forced vortex character. The flow in the volute is similar to that of the combined vortex with backflow, which is a non-axisymmetric unsteady flow with quite high turbulence intensity. These factors are the main reasons for the relatively low efficiency of the vortex pump. The measurement of flow field in volute with a five-hole probe was conducted, and it is demonstrated that the numerical results are in good agreement with the flow field measurement data. An upward pressure gradient forms in the portal area of the impeller, and it is confirmed that the lowest pressure point is located in the upper position of the impeller hub. It is revealed that for the vortex pump to have advanced suction and anti-cavitation performance, the lowest pressure in the pump should be −4 × 104 Pa and it should be located at the center of the vortex chamber cavity.

Abstract:Vortex diodes pump is a new-type maintenance-free equipment with no moving parts for pumping hazardous liquids.In order to obtain the design criteria to predict the performance of the pumping system,a theoretical mathematical model was established and was proved to be correct by experimental results.The results show that the mathematical model can be used to describe the dynamic and time averaged performances,and also to reflect the effects of operating parameters on the pumping system.

Abstract:Background: The vortex pump is a type of sewage pump renowned for its non-clogging performance. As the vortex pump has a special structure type, there are many vortex structures in the volute and impeller flow channel, which reduce the efficiency of the vortex pump. Reducing the energy loss and improving the efficiency of the vortex pump has been one of the main research objectives of designers. In this paper, the research progress of vortex pumps is summarized from the two aspects of transporting solid medium and low efficiency, which can provide a reference for future research. Methods: The latest patents and papers on vortex pumps were collected. The solid-liquid flow characteristics from the experimental and numerical perspectives, the influence of geometric parameters on external characteristics, and optimization design methods of the vortex pump were studied. Results: The particles, fibers, and cloth in the vortex pump will become trapped and blocked in the cavity. And the geometric parameters have an obvious effect on the pump. By using the intelligent optimization algorithm to optimize the impeller parameters, the pump efficiency can be increased by 10.25% under large flow conditions and the effective blade shear stress. Conclusion: The concentration and diameter of particles could change the performance of the pump. The retention and plugging of the solid medium in the vortex pump are related to flow structure and backflow. Appropriate geometric parameters should be selected when designing a vortex pump. Too large or too small a structure design will lead to poor performance of the vortex pump. This can be combined with intelligent optimization algorithms for pump design, which is a very effective method.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of low efficiency and high noise level of a vertical double-stage self-priming pump, the new volute chamber and annular sealing of impeller are presented on basis of the traditional self-priming pump under the premise of ensuring the self-priming performance. The internal flow field of the tradition self-priming pump and a novel structure were numerically simulated using the CFD tool, the internal flow structure and performance were analyzed. The matching structures between the volute and the liquid storage chamber were optimized , and the pump performance under annular sealing with different shapes and sizes was also analyzed. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, the results show that the L type annular sealing, compared to the traditional annular sealing structure, improved the volume efficiency of the self-priming pump obviously; New volute chamber and liquid storage chamber are better matched to reduce the hydraulic loss and improve efficiency and stability of the double-stage self-priming pump.

Abstract:In this study, a double volute centrifugal pump of relative low efficiency and high vibration was redesigned with the aid of unsteady CFD analyses. The local Euler head distribution (LEHD) representing the energy growth from the blade leading edge to trailing edge on s1 stream surface in a viscous flow field was introduced to evaluate the flow on s1 stream surfaces from hub to shroud. To investigate the unsteady internal flow of the centrifugal pump, the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS) were solved with realizable k-ε turbulence model using the CFD code FLUENT. The impeller was redesigned with the same outlet diameter as prototype pump. A two-step-form LEHD was recommended to suppress flow separation and secondary flow encountered in the prototype impeller to improve the efficiency. The splitter was added to improve the hydraulic performance and reduce unsteady radial forces. The original double volute was substituted by a newly designed single volute. The hydraulic efficiency of the redesigned centrifugal pump is 89.2%, 3.2% higher than the prototype pump. The pressure fluctuation in volute is significantly reduced and the mean and max values of unsteady radial force are only 30% and 26.5% of the prototype pump.

Abstract:The vortex pump,asatype of low specific pump,is more and more widely used in ship,aerospace and chemical engineering etc. However,the pressure fluctuation of fluid in the vortex pump would cause the vibration and noise of the pump and equipment,which has becomeone of the key issues needed to be solved in the design and application of high-performance vortex pump. This paper analyzed the characteristic of pressure fluctuation of a mini vortex pumpby the method of numerical simulation and experiment,and this paper alsodiscussed a random distribution method applied to reduce the pressure fluctuation. The results show that under the condition of even blade spacing,the blade passing frequency was dominative in the pressure fluctuation,and the pressure pulse amplitudes area was close to the stripper. The study also indicated that uneven circumferential spacing would yield additional frequency in the spectrum compared with even one and reduce the magnitude of the blade passing frequency and the total level of vibration markedly without decreasing the performance of the pump sharply. This paper proves a feasible scheme to reduce pressure fluctuation and vibration in a vortex pump,which is significatefor the vibration and noise reduction of the system with vortex pump.

Abstract:As one of the crucial components for power supply, the propulsion system is of great significance to the advance speed, noise performances, stabilities and other associated critical performances of underwater vehicles. Developing towards much higher advance speed, the underwater vehicles make more critical demands on the performances of the propulsion system. Basically, the increased advance speed requires the significantly raised rotation speed of the propulsion system, which would result in the deteriorated cavitation performances and consequently limit the thrust and efficiency of the whole system. Compared with the traditional propeller, the water jet pump offers more favourite cavitation, propulsion efficiency and other associated performances. The present research focuses on the cavitation performances of the waterjet pump blade profile in expectation of enlarging its advantages in high-speed vehicle propulsion. Based on the specifications of a certain underwater vehicle, the design method of the waterjet blade with high cavitation performances was investigated in terms of numerical simulation.

Abstract:The propulsor converts the power from engine into thrust to push autonomous underwater vehicle forward.With the increase of advance speed,the propulsor is possible to suffer with cavitation,deterioration of acoustics performances and propulsion efficiency.In this paper,the contra-rotating waterjet pump with two rotors rotating oppositely is introduced as a kind of propulsion device with high density of energy.Under same design specification,the rotation speed,blade loading as well as cavitation performances are supposed to be superior to the traditional single rotor type.Based on the parameters of certain vehicle,the experimental model and system are designed in this paper.And the loading status and Euler energy distribution of impeller blade in contra-rotating type are distinctively more reasonable than the single rotor type,and the cavitation performances are obviously improved.

Abstract:In order to analyse the hydrodynamic performance and cavitation characteristic of a high-speed mixed-flow pump during transient operations, experimental studies were carried out. The transient hydrodynamic performance and cavitation characteristics of the mixed-flow pump with guide vane during start-up operation processes were tested on the pump performance test-bed. Performance tests of the pump were carried out under various inlet pressures and speed-changing operations. The real-time instantaneous external characteristics such as rotational speed, hydraulic head, flow rate, suction pressure and discharge pressure of the pump were measured. Based on the experimental results, the effect of fluid acceleration on the hydrodynamic performances and cavitation characteristics of the mixed-flow pump were analysed and evaluated.

Abstract:The influence of vortex on steady flow and pressure fluctuation of circulating axial pump under pump condition is illustrated by numerical method validated by experiment measurement, a method for analyzing vibration by using Euler head density function (EHDF) is established. Based on the matching equation of the flowing angle of impeller and guide vane, two groups of guide vanes are designed to relate the same impeller as comparison. When the stagnation point at the guide vane inlet is offset, the low-speed vortex (LSV) is generated in the area from the mid flow surface to the hub surface, where the local Euler head (LEH) curves’ distribution is disarranged and the EHDF of this part is larger and closes to the EHDF value of the whole spanwise region, furthermore, the pressure fluctuation levels of low frequency band here deteriorate seriously. The larger EHDF value means the flow state and pressure fluctuation are worse, and the mainly developing of LSV is in this problematical area where the EHDF value has deteriorated the most. With quantizing image analysis of vorticity and LEH of the circulating pump by the EHDF, the structure position of LSV can be analyzed and the vibration level can be predicted.
Cavitation Performance Improvement of High Specific Speed Mixed-Flow Pump

Abstract:Cavitation performance improvement of large hydraulic machinery such as pump and turbine has been a hot topic for decades. During the design process of the pumps, in order to minimize size, weight and cost centrifugal and mixed-flow pump impellers are required to operate at the highest possible rotational speed. The rotational speed is limited by the phenomenon of cavitation. The hydraulic model of high-speed mixed-flow pump with large flow rate and high pumping head, which was designed based on the traditional method, always involves poor cavitation performance. In this paper, on the basis of the same hydraulic design parameters, two hydraulic models of high-speed mixed-flow pump were designed by using different methods, in order to investigate the cavitation and hydraulic performance of the two models, the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was adopted for internal flow simulation of the high specific speed mixed-flow pump. Based on the results of numerical simulation, the influences of impeller parameters and three-dimensional configuration on pressure distribution of the blades' suction surfaces were analyzed. The numerical simulation results shows a better pressure distribution and lower pressure drop around the leading edge of the improved model. The research results could provide references to the design and optimization of the anti-cavitation blade.

Abstract:Abstract Because of the advantages of small installation space, good cavitation performance, low cost and easy maintenance, the open channel pump station is widely used in agricultural production, flood control and ecological construction. In the process of operation, large-scale vortices such as wall vortex, bottom vortex and surface vortex easily appear. Under special working conditions, the head and efficiency of the pump station will be reduced, cavitation will occur at the blades, shafting will move, and the unit will vibrate, which will reduce the service life and safety of the pump station. In this paper, the head, efficiency, flow characteristic and free surface vortex of a mixed flow pump device model in pumping station under different water level and flowrates are studied numerically and experimentally, providing experience and theoretical reference for the design of the pumping station.

STUDY ON THE REDUCTION OF PRESSURE FLUCTUATION FOR A DOUBLE-SUCTION CENTRIFUGAL PUMP WITH STAGGERED BLADES

Abstract:Due to the distinctive characteristic of massive flow rates, double-suction centrifugal pump has been extensively applied in lots of perspectives, such as drainage, irrigation, transportation projects and other hydraulic engineering realms. Nevertheless, the significance of the pressure fluctuation inside the double-suction centrifugal pump, which is getting more and more prominent under the soaring demands for low noise and comfortable living environment, could not be underestimated. Consequently, how to reduce the pressure fluctuation as far as possible and enhance the running stability of the pump is always the research hotspot. In this study, the double-suction centrifugal impeller with abominable vibration performance is redesigned to improve the internal flow and reduce the flow-induced noise. What’s addition, the two redesigned impellers wearing splitter blades were compared in staggered arrangement with different angles for the purpose of ulteriorly decreasing the pressure fluctuation. On the basis of Realizable k-ε model and SIMPLEC algorithm, the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS) were resolved by means of CFD simulation and the flow performance and the vibration performance were validated with the experiments. The results illustrate that the redesigned impeller with multi-blade could raise the hydraulic performance and reduce the pressure fluctuation inside the pump. When the impeller of each side was laid with the staggered angle of 12 degrees, the pressure distribution tended to be more uniform and the pressure fluctuation was well ameliorated. Through the pressure fluctuation analysis in time domain and frequency domain, the pressure change inside the pumps could be evaluated quantitatively and accurately, hence different pumps could be contrasted in detail. The consequences of this paper could provide reference for pressure fluctuation reduction and vibration performance reinforcement of double-suction centrifugal pumps as well as other vane pumps.

Abstract:This paper describes the related research work in the field of fluid-induced vibration of centrifugal pumps conducted by many researchers. In recent years, all walks of life have put forward higher demands for the vibration performance of pumps which drives the investigation on the root cause of pump vibration and the development of guidelines for the design of low-vibration pumps. Fluid-induced excitation is the most important and significant source of pump vibration. Understanding its generation mechanism and dominant characteristics is important for developing low-vibration pump design methodology. This paper starts with the analysis of unsteady flow in the centrifugal pump and summarizes unsteady flow characteristics such as jet-wake structure, secondary flow, and rotational stall in the operating pump. Based on the understanding of the unsteady flow structure in the pump, the fluid-induced excitation mechanism and its characteristics based on the investigation of unsteady pressure pulsation and excitation forces in the pump are summarized. For the pump operating at nominal flow rate, the excitation at blade passing frequency (BPF) dominates and related suppression methods are classified and summarized to provide reference for the design of a low-vibration pump.

Abstract:In this study, a double volute centrifugal pump with relative low efficiency and high vibration is redesigned to improve the efficiency and reduce the unsteady radial forces with the aid of unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The concept of entropy generation rate is applied to evaluate the magnitude and distribution of the loss generation in pumps and it is proved to be a useful technique for loss identification and subsequent redesign process. The local Euler head distribution (LEHD) can represent the energy growth from the blade leading edge (LE) to its trailing edge (TE) on constant span stream surface in a viscous flow field, and the LEHD is proposed to evaluate the flow field on constant span stream surfaces from hub to shroud. To investigate the unsteady internal flow of the centrifugal pump, the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS) are solved with realizable k-epsilon turbulence model using the CFD code FLUENT. The impeller is redesigned with the same outlet diameter as the baseline pump. A two-step-form LEHD is recommended to suppress flow separation and secondary flow encountered in the baseline impeller in order to improve the efficiency. The splitter blades are added to improve the hydraulic performance and to reduce unsteady radial forces. The original double volute is substituted by a newly designed single volute one. The hydraulic efficiency of the centrifugal pump based on redesigned impeller with splitter blades and newly designed single volute is about 89.2%, a 3.2% higher than the baseline pump. The pressure fluctuation in the volute is significantly reduced, and the mean and maximum values of unsteady radial force are only 30% and 26.5% of the values for the baseline pump.

Experimental Research on Performance of Water Hydraulic Internal Gear Pump

Abstract:Internal gear pumps have significant advantages over other types of pump, such like high operating pressure, efficient transmission of energy, long service life, little pressure ripples and low noise emissions. Due to the nature of water, such as, low viscosity, poor lubricity and high vapour pressure, the performance of water hydraulic internal gear pumps is totally different from the oil ones. Using tap water as working medium, the experiments of internal gear pump are implemented and the performances are obtained. The results indicate the floating plates are the key components of water hydraulic internal gear pumps which decide the efficiency and service life of the pumps. Then, the pressing forces acting on the floating plates and the contact stresses are calculated. Finally, the causes of wear failure of floating plates are investigated and some design principles in water hydraulic internal gear pumps are also proposed.

Abstract:The vortex in a pump sump is a negative problem for the pump unit, which can lead to the decline of pump performance. Focusing on the internal pressure characteristics of the floor-attached vortex (FAV) and its influence on the pump unit, the FAV was analyzed adopting the previously verified numerical simulation method and experiment. The results show that the pressure in the vortex core gradually decreases with time, drops to a negative pressure at the development stage, and then reaches the lowest pressure during the continuance stage. When the negative pressure of the vortex tube is around the vaporization pressure of the continuance stage, it can cause a local cavitation at the impeller inlet. The evolution of the FAV is accompanied by a change of pressure gradient in the vortex core which is discussed in detail. This research provides theoretical guidance for a better understanding of the vortex characteristics and the optimal design for the pump.
