On Ancient Prose Movement against Parallel Prose in Tang and Song Dynasties

Abstract:Ancient Chinese prose in Tang and Song Dynasties is regarded as the antithesis of"parallel prose"by most critics in modern and contemporary times.In fact,ancient prose movement in Tang and Song Dynasties does oppose the extravagant style rather than the parallelism in form.Han Yu,Liu Zongyuan,Ou Yangxiu,Su Dongpo-four famous writers in Tang and Song Dynasties-were quite friendly to parallelism in theory.Meanwhile,Liu Zongyuan,Ou Yangxiu,Su Shi,Wang Anshi were even the key figures in Chinese parallelism literary history."Ancient Chinese prose",from the conceptual point of view,was opposite to"modern style".However,it did not exclude parallel prose.From the perspectives of impact and effect,both ancient Chinese prose and parallel prose did not stop developing until the beginning of the twentieth century when ancient Chinese prose and parallel prose retreated from the history under great impacts of modern vernacular Chinese literature.
