Determination of 18 Phthalates in Tipping Paper, Inner Liner, Packet and Carton Blanks for Cigarette with Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy

Abstract:A method was developed for the analysis of 18 phthalates(PAEs) in tipping paper,inner liner,packet and carton blanks for cigarette with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy(GC/MS).Tipping paper,inner liner,packet and carton blanks were cut into pieces,the tested sample was impregnated with water prior to ethanol and internal standard adding,then went through ultrasonic extraction,the extraction solution was liquid/liquid extracted by n-hexane,the supernatant was analyzed with GC/MS.The results showed that: 1) the recoveries of PAEs ranged from 86.3% to 109.8% with the relative standard deviations below 10.0% and the limit of quantification from 1.1 to 57.6 mg/kg.2) 2000 samples were tested,phthalate was not found in 95.7% of these samples,and the phthalates detectable in the remainder were mainly DIBP,DBP and DEHP.98.9% of their tested values were below 100 mg/kg,a few samples contained more,but still lower than 300 mg/kg.This method is suitable for the analysis of the said phthalates in tipping paper,inner liner,packet and carton blanks.
