Abstract:To provide a Kolmogorov-type condition for characterizing a best approximation in a continuous complex-valued function space, it is usually assumed that the family of closed convex sets in the complex plane used to restrict the range satisfies a strong interior-point condition, and this excludes the interesting case when some t is a line-segment or a singleton. The main aim of the present paper is to remove this restriction by virtue of a study of the notion of the strong CHIP for an infinite system of closed convex sets in a continuous complex-valued function space.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over a number field $k$ and $P$ in $X(k)$. In 2007, the second author conjectured that, in a precise sense, if rational points on $X$ are dense enough, then the best rational approximations to $P$ must lie on a curve. We present a strategy for deducing a slightly weaker conjecture from Vojta's conjecture, and execute this strategy for the full conjecture for split surfaces.

Abstract:Restricted range approximation in uniform norm from an extended Haar space of a certain order is an important and widely applicable problem in restricted approximations. In the past 20 years or more, many authors have investigated the characterization of best approximations in various special cases of restricted range approximation, which include approximation with interpolatory constraints, one-sided approximation, and copositive approximation. But the characterization in the general case is still an open question. The paper gives a general characterization theorem in the form of convex hull and alternation. Many known important results are exactly its special cases.

Abstract:We study approximations of rational functions on the complex plane, focusing on bounded point derivations. We show that if there is a bounded point derivation at x and is a sequence of points that converges non-tangentially to x , then the sequence of derivatives is uniformly bounded for a large class of functions, specifically those functions which can be approximated by rational functions with poles off X in the norm. A counterexample is constructed that shows that the hypothesis of non-tangential convergence cannot be removed.

Approximation Theory and Its Applications

Abstract:Let R be a normed linear space, K be an arbitrary convex subset of an n-dimensional subspace Φ n ⊂R. This paper first gives a general charactaerization for a best approximation from K in form of “zero in the convex hull”. Applying it to the uniform approximation by generalized polynomials with restricted ranges, we get further an alternation characterization. Our results ocntains the special cases of interpolatory approximation, positive approximation, copositive approximation, and the classical characterizations in forms of convex hull and alternation in approximation without restriction.

This theorem is widely applicable. Abstract:Abstract We strengthen the classical approximation theorems of Weierstrass, Runge, and Mergelyan by showing the polynomial and rational approximants can be taken to have a simple geometric structure. In particular, when approximating a function $f$ on a compact set $K$, the critical points of our approximants may be taken to lie in any given domain containing $K$, and all the critical values in any given neighborhood of the polynomially convex hull of $f(K)$.

Abstract:Let $L$ be the distinguished Laplacian on the Iwasawa $AN$ group associated with a semisimple Lie group $G$. Assume $F$ is a Borel function on $\mathbb{R}^+$. We give a condition on $F$ such that the kernels of the functions $F(L)$ are uniformly bounded. This condition involves the decay of $F$ only and not its derivatives. By a known correspondence, this implies pointwise estimates for a wide range of functions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on symmetric spaces. In particular, when $G$ is of real rank one and $F(x)={\rm e}^{it\sqrt x}\psi(\sqrt x)$, our bounds are sharp.

Abstract:This paper addresses weak approximation for rationally connected varieties defined over the function field of a curve, especially at places of bad reduction. Our approach entails analyzing the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of singular reductions of the variety. As an application, we prove weak approximation for cubic surfaces with square-free discriminant.

Abstract:A nonsingular real algebraic variety Y is said to have the approximation property if for every real algebraic variety X the following holds: if f:X-->Y is a C^inf map that is homotopic to a regular map, then f can be approximated in the C^inf topology by regular maps. In this paper, we characterize the varieties Y with the approximation property. We also characterize the varieties Y with the approximation property combined with a suitable interpolation condition. Some of our results have variants concerning the regular approximation of continuous maps defined on (possibly singular) real algebraic varieties.

Abstract:We prove a version of the classical Runge and Mergelyan uniform approximation theorems for non-orientable minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space R3. Then, we obtain some geometric applications. Among them, we emphasize the following ones: 1. A Gunning-Narasimhan type theorem for non-orientable conformal surfaces. 2. An existence theorem for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3, with arbitrary conformal structure, properly projecting into a plane. 3. An existence result for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3 with arbitrary conformal structure and Gauss map omitting one projective direction.

Abstract:We provide a novel approach to approximate bounded Lipschitz domains via a sequence of smooth, bounded domains. The flexibility of our method allows either inner or outer approximations of Lipschitz domains which also possess weakly defined curvatures, namely, domains whose boundary can be locally described as the graph of a function belonging to the Sobolev space for some . The sequences of approximating sets is also characterized by uniform isocapacitary estimates with respect to the initial domain .
