Abstract:A Collection of Epitaphs from the Tang West Market Museum was of significant value in literary studies.The deeds of the Tang literary writers which were recorded in their epitaphs provide a more comprehensive understanding of such famous poets as He Zhizhang,Li Bai,Du Fu and Wei Yingwu.The Tang Dynasty was called "an era of poetry",but many poets,together with their poems,remained unknown because they could be made well known only by spreading their manuscripts.These unknown poets found from their newly unearthed epitaphs provide important resources for academic research.Epitaph is a special type of biography,which has continuously evolved in the process of its normalization and development.The contingency and originality of the newly unearthed epitaphs are mostly helpful to the study of the occurrence and evolution of literary styles.On the basis of the newly unearthed epitaphs,the transcription of the works of the Tang literary writers can also exhibit the literary and academic prosperity in the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:From its inception in the seventeenth century, the Royal Society was no friend to poetry. The advancement of the new science, in the view of its champions, required the subordination of language to empirical observation, the unequivocal homage of inconstant words to the unchanging nature of things in themselves. Poets, needless to say, took a dim view of this development, as they staked their livelihood on the very malleability of language that the empiricists condemned. Satire provided sweet revenge: a team of scholars encountered by Swift’s Gulliver during his visit to the Academy of Lagado make themselves ridiculous by taking Thomas Sprat’s denunciations of figurai language at face value. Rather than risk the ambiguity and semantic slippage attendant on verbal expression, they have dispensed with words altogether and taken to communicating entirely with things, a collection of which they carry about with them in a handy satchel for deployment at academic meetings and cocktail parties.1

Abstract:Processes of adapting complex information for broad audiences became a pressing concern by the turn of the twentieth century. Channels of communication ranged from public lectures to printed books designed to serve a social class eager for self-improvement. Through analyzing a course of public lectures given by George Howard Darwin (1845-1912) for the Lowell Institute in Boston and the monograph he based on these, The Tides and Kindred Phenomena of the Solar System (1898), this article connects the important practices of public lecturing and book production-two aspects of knowledge dissemination that tend to be studied as separate entities. Darwin, Plumian Professor of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge and son of the famous naturalist, relied on a diverse material culture when lecturing and producing a book. Giving a new account of Darwin's scientific work through exploring his adaption of it for broader audiences, this article connects the diverse material culture Darwin employed in talks to the practice of producing a published book. The content of objects demonstrated and the lantern slides projected during Darwin's lectures evolved to form a book designed to engage broad sectors of society in Europe and the United States. Darwin's lectures were attended at full capacity, while The Tides was soon printed in numerous English editions and translated into German, Italian, Hungarian, and Spanish.

Abstract:This essay traces the divergent readings of William Paley's 1802 Natural Theology from its initial publication to the recent controversies over intelligent design. It argues that the misinterpretation of the Natural Theology as a scientific argument about the origins of complex life-which Darwin's Origin of Species refutes-did not develop all at once. Rather this reading evolved gradually, drawing from a variety of uses and appropriations during the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This study demonstrates the fluidity of "science" and "religion" during these centuries, and highlights the role that genres of science popularization play in altering the meaning of those categories.

Abstract:In the period of May Fourth Movement there were many translations and introductions of Wilde, which reached a high tide but instantly calmed down in the 1930s. From heaven to hell, the shift showed the importance of ideology in choosing foreign writers and literary works. In this course Chinese translators' attitudes towards Wilde were different. The translations and introductions of Wilde, as well as the reasons for this shift will be discoursed in this article. Meanwhile the discussion about two different attitudes and practices towards Wilde is another focus of this article.

Darwin and the White Shipwrecked Sailor: Beyond Blending Inheritance and the Jenkin Myth

Abstract:This paper revisits Fleeming Jenkin's anonymous review of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, published in the North British Review in June 1867. This review is usually revered for its impact on Darwin's theory of descent with modification. Its classical interpretation states that Jenkin, a Professor of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, made a compelling case against natural selection based on the fact of "blending inheritance" and the "swamping" of advantageous variations. Those themes, however, are strikingly absent from Jenkin's text. They were later read into Jenkin's text by scholars trying to explain how Darwinian selection was reconciled with Mendelian genes and the birth of the Modern Synthesis. While many scholars have tried to measure Jenkin's effect on Darwin, the value of the 1867 review remains unclear. This paper re-examines its content and concludes that Jenkin's "able review" was in fact written by an engineer whose competencies in biology were very low. Focusing on the figure of the shipwrecked white sailor isolated on an island inhabited by Black people, this paper also underlines the racial assumptions behind Jenkin's review. "Blending inheritance" is thus a theme linked to theoretical reworkings on the question of race and skin colors, taking its root in Galton's typology of heredity. Darwin was probably mostly unimpressed by Jenkin's review. The problems raised by the review were not so much "blending inheritance" and "swamping" but a conundrum of problems related to the effects of intercrossing on variation and reversion.

Abstract:This body of work is motivated by an apparent contradiction between, on the one hand, Darwin's testimony in his autobiographical text about a supposed perceptual colour blindness before the aesthetic magnificence of natural landscapes, and, on the other hand, the last paragraph of On the Origin of Species, where he claims to perceive the forms of nature as beautiful and wonderful. My aim is to delve into the essence of the Darwinian perception of beauty in the context of the Weberian concept of "disenchantment of the world", assumed as a possible conceptual axis that enables the unravelling of the core of this contrast of perceptions. In acknowledging the theory of evolution as one of the most prominent scientific theories likely to have contributed to disenchantment, a number of questions arise: Is disenchantment compatible with aesthetic experience and sensibility before natural beauty? Was it Darwin's disenchanted conception of the world that led him to believe he was colour blind? To answer these questions, a computer-assisted semantic analysis of lexical frequency and variability, most especially focused on aesthetic-emotional and religious or spiritual adverbs and adjectives, has been undertaken across the six editions of The Origin. The semantic analysis demonstrates that, although disenchanted, Darwin's descriptions of, mainly, the adaptational excellence of living beings, reflect an aesthetically enriched perception of nature. It is concluded that Darwin's perceptual colour blindness, then, might be based on a confusion rooted in the equation of equality between aesthetic sensibility in nature and the perception of its beauty as part of the vestigia Dei.

Abstract:Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.

Abstract:As a Victorian novelist and 20th century poet, Thomas Hardy' s thoughts display uniqueness and immortality. In his voluminous literary production permeates strong nostalgic sentiments. It is by no means accidental. With skillful and delicate creative finesse, on his literary characters he casts his personal nostalgic sentiments. The hero Angel Clare in Tess of the D' Urbervilles is a typical example. Through an analysis of Clare' s thoughts, we can safely proclaim that Hardy' s nostalgic sentiments are closely related with a sense of time. Based on an analysis of Clare, this article is devoted to the exploration of the nostalgic sentiments in Hardy's literary creation.

Abstract:Centering on a rereading of Robert Frost's nature poems,this paper carries out a comparative study of Frost's poems,his Romantic lyrics and pastorals,highlighting Frost's aesthetic critique and construction. Through analyzing his"anti-romantic nature writing",his"anti-pastoral aesthetic critique"and his"dialogic na-ture",the paper intends to build up Frost's aesthetic system.With romantic irony,parody of pastorals and shaping of inter-subjective beauty of nature,Frost's nature poems not only transcend the limits of literary tra-dition,giving a prominent aesthetic critique to industrialization and"human-centered"notions,but also initiate an existential beauty that witnesses harmony between man and nature,thus becoming one of the canons in A-merican nature writing traditions.

Abstract:Ecocriticism provides a natural meeting-point of the humanities and the life sciences. Shakespeare's last great play, The Tempest, is rich in its anticipation of Darwinian evolutionary ideas, thus providing the stage for a rare two-cultures dialogue between, arguably, the world's greatest literary artist and its greatest scientist on the most abiding and profound of subjects: nature, and especially human nature. If Caliban is the most noticeable of The Tempest's subjects of evolutionary and cultural significance, he is accompanied by other matters of interest in today's expanding field of biocultural and cognitive research and thought.

Abstract:Abstract Mendel and Darwin were contemporaries, with much overlap in their scientifically productive years. Available evidence shows that Mendel knew much about Darwin, whereas Darwin knew nothing of Mendel. Because of the fragmentary nature of this evidence, published inferences regarding Mendel’s views on Darwinian evolution are contradictory and enigmatic, with claims ranging from enthusiastic acceptance to outright rejection. The objective of this review is to examine evidence from Mendel’s published and private writings on evolution and Darwin, and the influence of the scientific environment in which he was immersed. Much of this evidence lies in Mendel’s handwritten annotations in his copies of Darwin’s books, which this review scrutinises in detail. Darwin’s writings directly influenced Mendel’s classic 1866 paper, and his letters to Nägeli. He commended and criticised Darwin on specific issues pertinent to his research, including the provisional hypothesis of pangenesis, the role of pollen in fertilisation, and the influence of “conditions of life” on heritable variation. In his final letter to Nägeli, Mendel proposed a Darwinian scenario for natural selection using the same German term for “struggle for existence” as in his copies of Darwin’s books. His published and private scientific writings are entirely objective, devoid of polemics or religious allusions, and address evolutionary questions in a manner consistent with that of his scientific contemporaries. The image that emerges of Mendel is of a meticulous scientist who accepted the tenets of Darwinian evolution, while privately pinpointing aspects of Darwin’s views of inheritance that were not supported by Mendel’s own experiments.
