Abstract:Although there is no direct inheritance between the idea of Holderlin and that of Whitman, they do have some common points in interpretation of the poet and philosopher, definition of the value of poetry and philosophy, and persistent exploration of life and rationality. Tracing of their ideological roots, it can be seen that Greek philosophy or Greek cultural tradition has influenced Holderlin and Whitman’s poetry and poetics in varying degrees. In fact, the fundamental spirit of the Western poetic thoughts just lies in the Greek tradition.

The pure child's perspective reveals the contradiction of puerility and massiness;the old man's perspective reveals the contradiction of indifference and sympathy;the women's perspective reveals the contradiction of struggle and compromise. In this novel,through multiple perspectives and dual contradiction in each perspective,the particular significance and eternal poignancy of women's tragedies becomes more obvious.

Abstract:In the period of May Fourth Movement there were many translations and introductions of Wilde, which reached a high tide but instantly calmed down in the 1930s. From heaven to hell, the shift showed the importance of ideology in choosing foreign writers and literary works. In this course Chinese translators' attitudes towards Wilde were different. The translations and introductions of Wilde, as well as the reasons for this shift will be discoursed in this article. Meanwhile the discussion about two different attitudes and practices towards Wilde is another focus of this article.

Subjectivity and innovation in contemporary Chinese poetry (part 2)

Abstract:In the early 1980s Chinese poetry saw a transition from the menglong to the post-menglong period, with both conceptual and aesthetic changes in the presentation of selfhood. In the mid-1980s there was a 'second tide' of experimental poetry and poetic diversity flourished. This resulted in a grand collection of heterogeneous poems and declarations of poetic invention from 'over sixty experimental poetry schools' as was seen in Poetry Gazette and Shenzhen Youth Daily in 1986. However, only a few of the various advocacies became distinct trends, enduring through the last two decades of the twentieth century. 'Elitist poetry' and 'neo-realist poetry' were discussed in part 1 of this paper; another two, women's poetry and cosmopolitan poetry, will be focused on here because these trends not only represent significant poetic inventions but also relate closely to the concept of selfhood, which actually underpins aesthetic and thematic changes in contemporary Chinese poetry, and are thus helpful in examining the relationship between this concept and poetic development in China. My examination seeks to clarify the transformation of the 'selfexpression' initiated by the menglong poets as well as, to a certain degree, the interaction between ideology and literary discourse.

A Comparative Study Of Two Images In Ovid'S Amatory Poems And Chaucer'S Troilus And Criseyde

Abstract:Chaucer not only owes a great debt to, but also departs radically from Ovid. While Ovidianizing Troilus and Criseyde, Chaucer "de-Ovidianizes" Ovid as well; more than an Ovidian artist, Chaucer is saliently un-Ovidian too. The same images figure and function in very different manners in the two poets. Starting from an analysis of two images common in Ovid's amatory poems and Chaucer's Troilus, that is, those of sailing and the door/gate, this essay explores how Chaucer rewrites Ovid by considering larger thematic concerns and designs. In particular, the two poets' disparate attitudes toward and treatments of history determine, to some extent, the tones of their works. The weight of history in Chaucer distinguishes him from the characteristic Ovidian lightness. Chaucer's artistry empowers him to be the parodic Ovid more than the "medieval Ovid."

Abstract:As a contribution to comparative East-West poetics, this essay descries a common resource of Western and classical Chinese literatures in certain “apophatic” modes of thought and discourse that are oriented to what cannot be said, to what is manifest only in and through a certain evasion and defiance of all efforts to verbalize and conceptualize it. This argument is developed in critical counterpoint with the work of interpreting Chinese classical poetry and thought by the French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien. Jullien acutely apprehends and elegantly expounds the deeply apophatic bent of Chinese poetics. However, he sets Chinese thought and poetry categorically apart from Western approaches, whereas my analysis brings them together under the aegis of their common inspiration from the experience of the limits of language vis-à-vis an unspeakable origin of thinking and its source in reality.

Abstract:The present paper discusses Li Hongwei’s novel The King and Lyric Poetry (2017). The novel tells the story of the suicide of the last Nobel Prize laureate in the future history of literature, Chinese poet Yuwen Wanghu. Following the detective thread of the book, the essay reconstructs utopian and dystopian semi-virtual landscapes of the mid-21st century China which feed into two different models of lyricism: the poet as a knight errant who seeks inspiration far from modern civilization and the poet as a lonely warrior against (technological) tyranny. In the final scene, the two landscapes blur and the antithetical forces that infuse them: lyricism (Yuwen) and power/knowledge (the King) merge into what may be seen as their dialectical synthesis to be fulfilled by the novel’s third protagonist – Yuwen’s young friend, Li Pulei. Mobilizing various contexts, including the suicides of famous mainland-Chinese poets, important poetry polemics, and intertexts ranging from classical Chinese literary theory through to Truman Show and Matrix , I argue that the novel mirrors the development of poetry discourse in the PRC with its various myths, conflicts, complexes, and ambitions. I also show how this discourse, shaped for a long time largely by the so-called Third Generation poets born in the 1950s and 1960s, translates into the situation of the poets who belong to a younger generation (“post-70”) represented by Li Hongwei among others, and what (self-)expectations, challenges, and limitations they face in their writing.

Abstract:Similar to other sonnets, Edmund Spenser’s Amoretti followed Petrarchan courtship but also demonstrated the unique Spenserian form. Spenser’s superb creative skills profoundly influenced his contemporaries and the English poets of later generations. Nevertheless, the translation of Spenser’s sonnets began exceedingly late in China with few results. Guided by the horizon of expectation in reception aesthetics, this study compared Cao Minglun and Hu Jialuan’s versions of Amoretti Sonnet 67 (Amoretti 67) based on their content, rhyme, and language style. The main question is to understand what horizons of expectations Hu and Cao’s translations reflect based on reception aesthetics, and how do Hu and Cao’s horizons fuse with the original author’s horizon of expectation? Guided by translators’ vision of expectation, Hu emphasized that both the content and style of the translation should be faithful to the original text. Thus, Hu’s translation is the closest to the original poem. Contrarily, Cao’s translation sought a balance between the original text and the translation. Cao aimed to maintain the content and format of the original poetry while capitalizing on the strengths of the Chinese language. Both Chinese versions embody their translator’s values. The significance of this study extends to its implications for Chinese readers delving into Spenser’s poetic world. Analyzing Cao and Hu’s diverse strategies empowers readers to navigate Amoretti 67’s depth, fostering understanding of Spenser’s artistry and the intricacies of translation.

Abstract:In Duoduo’s poetry since the mid-1980s there is a fundamental paradox which lies in the relation between the aim of his poetry, to which he refers as “Dao”, and his linguistic manipulation. For Duoduo, today’s culture is loaded with overdeveloped theories, and the creativity of poets is seriously undermined by “the invasion of knowledge”. So Duoduo employs meta-poems to express this understanding of language, knowledge, and poetry. His meta-poem often comprises not only an aesthetically constituted poem but also reflections on poetry, especially on its genesis and development in history and personal writing, as well as on how to read and interpret it. Duoduo also employs self-contradictory language to destroy the referentiality and logic of ordinary language. The language of Duoduo’s poems often incorporates great tension and drastic contradictions, which are reinforced by prosodic movements, hence it incorporates the quality of “gesture”. Duoduo’s challenge to normal modes of expressing meaning and representing experience, his pursuit of a new poetic world and linguistic paradigm are now more and more welcome by Chinese readers and younger poets.

Abstract:Epitaph and poetry are two different literary genres in ancient China. However, when they collectively address the theme of “mourning the deceased”, they demonstrate an evident phenomenon of permeation and interaction. Pan Yue, as the pioneer of mourning poetry, his personal expressions as well as the scenes and objects in his mourning poems have become fixed imageries of mourning, which have been applied to the epitaphs written by later literati for their deceased wives, enhancing the mourning attributes of these inscriptions. Some renowned poets such as Wei Yingwu 韦应物 (737–791) from the Tang 唐 Dynasty (618–907), and Li Mengyang 李梦阳 (1473–1530), from the Ming 明 Dynasty (1368–1644) would personally write tomb inscriptions while creating mourning poems for their deceased wives. Reading these two kinds of texts from the same author side by side not only deepens our understanding of both types of text, but also helps to examine the intertextual interactions between these two literary forms.

Abstract:This thesis is based on Zhu Chunshen's translation of De Profundis. The original text is the prison memoir of Oscar Wilde, reflecting on his relationship with his lover-- Bosie, but also involving topics such as art, life and religion, and it discusses the emotions and arts based on the inextricable relationship in the context of suffering. Due to its profound content and meaningful prose, as well as the language and cultural differences between China and the UK, it is difficult to fully convey the original meaning in translation. Regardless of it, Mr. Zhu Chunshen's translation is widely circulated in the industry and highly praised. This work uses Newmark's translation theory to analyse this translation from three aspects, namely the application of four-character phrases, the adjustments of sentence structures and the reformation of the original forms, so as to understand the deep meaning and translation art conveyed by the translator.

The Comparison and Exploration of the Subject Difference between Lamentations and Lament of Capital Ying

Abstract:Lamentations and lament of capital Ying are models of city lament in ancient Hebrew-and Chinese classical literary traditions respectively. A comparative study shows that there are significant subject difference between lamentations and lament of capital Ying . Lamentations is the collective works, and its compilation and inheritance function as emotional expression of sufferings of the past, present and future of the Jewish people, reflecting their infinite belief of transcendent God . In contrast, lament of capital Ying is the creation of Qu Yuan, and under the influence of the sage's commitment to the mandate of heaven by his individual virtue. The poetry expresses Qu Yuan’s personal grief through a special literary technique and its succession and experience in later generations are mainly individual. The subject difference of two poetry is a reflection of different development trajectories of the humans-transcendent relationship in Hebrew- and the Chinese civilizations of the Axial Age.
