Abstract:The acoustics research at Tongji University began in the mid-1950s. The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) of Tongji University, which is one of the earliest institutions engaged in acoustics research in China, was formally established in 1984. The IOA has decades of experience in acoustics education, including offering a master's degree program for approximately 40 years, a Ph.D. program for 35 years, and a postgraduate program for 25 years. The IOA is one of the oldest acoustic research facilities in China with outstanding acoustics laboratories. Research at the IOA is performed in many areas of acoustics, which focus on detection acoustics and marine acoustics, laser ultrasonics and photoacoustics, medical ultrasonics and bioacoustics, architectural acoustics, environmental acoustics, noise control, functional and microstructural acoustic materials, aeroacoustics and aeronautical acoustics, and vehicle acoustics. This paper presents acoustics education at the undergraduate and graduate levels of Tongji University and its outstanding acoustics research facilities in detail.

Abstract:Acoustics research in Nanjing University was initiated by Prof. Rong-jue Wei in 1954, and developed as an Institute of Acoustics of Nanjing University in 1978, and then also a National Laboratory of Modern Acoustics in 1990. Under the leadership of Prof. Wei, the research of acoustics developed widely from audio acoustics to physical acoustics and ultrasonics, including electro-acoustics, architectural acoustics, speech signal processing, molecular acoustics, atmospheric acoustics, acousto-electronics, low temperature acoustics, nonlinear acoustics, photoacoustics, biological acoustics, environmental acoustics, and noise control. Most of the research fields and works were initial and creative in the country, and some of them have been continued and developed greatly. Up to now, the researches of the institute include five fields as follows: (1) Intensive acoustics: ultrasonic cavitation, somoluminescience, soliton and chaos; (2) Photoacoustics and laser ultrasonics: photoacoustic spectroscopy and imaging, characterization of nanoscaled materials, biological materials, and metamaterials; (3) Ultrasonics: phonon crystals, surface acoustic wave technique, and devices; (4) Biomedical ultrasonics: nonlinear ultrasonic phenomena and imaging of biological tissues; (5) Audio acoustics: electroacoustics, architectural acoustics, environmental acoustics and noise control, and acoustic signal processing.
Discussion on resonant frequency in thermoacoustic systems

Abstract:Besides two traditional methods of calculating resonant frequency, a new method referred to as Standing Wave Minimal Antinode Method is proposed, which makes it possible to consider the influence of resistance, since zero antinode is no long a necessity as in an ideal standing wave system. Numerical simulation will be made oil three types of tubes for their resonant frequencies with three methods, focusing on the influences of impedance composition on the resonant frequency. Analysis and comparison will also be made to these three methods.

Abstract:Based on the computation of thermodynamic properties of binary inert gas fluids, He-Ar mixtures were used as working fluids to improve the refrigeration performance of a thermo acoustically driven pulse tube refrigerator. The experimental results indicated that the refrigeration performance with appropriate He-Ar mixtures was better than that of pure He.

Abstract:The acoustics in the Department of Acoustic Science and Engineering, Nanjing University, has been evaluated as a state key subject for cultivating acoustic talents from undergraduate students to post-doctoral fellows. Our department prepares undergraduates for entry-level positions in the acoustic field and further education at the master's level. Our educational programs are organized around two overlapping areas: Acoustics and Acoustical signal processing. Core courses include fundamentals of acoustics, acoustic measurement, and acoustic transducer. A series of advanced undergraduate courses have also been developed to provide students with formal training in acoustics, including: electronic acoustics, ultrasonics, architectural acoustics, audio signal processing, active noise control, and etc. The goal of this program is to prepare students with both solid foundation in acoustic science and capabilities in acoustic engineering.

Abstract:This presentation gives an overview of the acoustics education by the author's 21-year career in National Chiao-Tung University and National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. Although it is generally recognized that acoustics is an “old” subject in classical physics, it finds many new applications in the modern world. The paradigm of acoustic education of the author is to gear the domain knowledge of acoustics to the needs of main-stream industries in Taiwan, including Computer, Community, Consumer electronics and Car, the so-called 4C industries, with emphasis placed upon telecom acoustics, eletroacoustics and audio signal processing (TEA) involved in the 4C products. To meet the ever changing challenges, a multidisciplinary approach including signal processing and control system is exploited, in addition to acoustics, in the pedagogic methodology. It is hoped that, with these new perspectives, classical acoustics can be rejuvenated within unified framework. In the author's career in education, more than 100 (including 30 in JASA) journal papers have been published, an institute of Sound and Music Innovative Technology (SMIT) and the Telecom acoustics, Eletroacoustics and Audio signal processing (TEA) laboratory have been launched in NCTU and NTHU, respectively, and a monograph on acoustic array systems is currently in preparation.

Abstract:Modern architectural acoustics, as a branch of acoustics, was founded by W. C. Sabine in Harvard Universtiy in early 1900s. From the correction & research for acoustical difficulty in Great Hall of Tsinghua University in 1920s to the independent architectural acoustics founded in China in late 1950s, the transplantation of architectural acoustics to China completed. From the angle of scientific sociology, this article narrates the history of how architectural acoustics transplanted to China, analyses different topics of three different phases, and reveals the key role of two generations of scientists represented by Ye Qisun and Ma Dayou. Scientific community and social context influence the logical process of architectural acoustics transplanted to China. From the research subject, researchers, academic environment and academic institutions, Tsinghua University play an original significant role in this process of transplantation.

Abstract:There is a one academic year theoretical acoustics course for postgraduate students in the Department of Acoustic Science and Engineering of Nanjing University. The course introduces the physical principles and mathematical methods for acoustics in fluids, and the main objective is to deepen understanding of acoustical principle for postgraduate students in the field of acoustics following their undergraduate fundamental acoustics course. The contents include acoustic waves in ideal fluids, acoustic radiation in infinite space, acoustic scattering and diffractions, propagation and radiation of acoustic waves in dust, acoustic fields in enclosed space, acoustic waves in dissipative fluids, acoustic waves in layered fluid, acoustic waves in moving fluids, propagation of acoustic waves with finite amplitude, and effects generated by acoustic waves with finite amplitude. More details can be found in the book title “Principle of Acoustics in Fluids” published by Science Press in China in 2012.

Abstract:Speed of sound is an important thermophysical property which can be measured very precisely.Cylindrical resonator is a promising approach to measure speed of sound accurately.Based on the fundamental theory of cylindrical resonator,a new experimental system was built including the resonator and pressure vessel,the frequency measurement system,the temperature and pressure measurement system and the data acquisition system.Great efforts have been made to obtain high signal-to-noise performance.

Abstract:<p>The aeroacoustic wind tunnel at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a new facility commissioned for studies of sound generation mechanisms, noise reduction methods, and aerodynamic designs. The wind tunnel is operated at low Mach numbers and low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. This study details the design methodology for wind-tunnel major components. The validation tests of the flow quality are performed by pitot-tube and hot-wire measurements, and those of the aeroacoustic performance are conducted by far-field microphone measurements. The aerodynamic and acoustic performance is compared with established data, and the results show that the wind tunnel has a high quality of flow field and low background noise levels. A benchmark test of airfoil tonal noise is conducted by microphone and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The observed tones exhibit consistent features with existing experimental observations and the mechanisms are explained with the help of flow field near the trailing edge.</p>

Abstract:One of the 26th IYTP topics ,Hearing light ,was singled out to be discussed in this pa‐per .It gave the relation between the power of the light and the sound intensity ,and that between the frequency of sound and the frequency of the modulation light .The experimental results showed that the optoacoustic frequency was equal to the frequency of the light .The sound intensity increased with the frequency of the light .That was ,the higher the frequency of the light chopper was ,the larger the sound intensity was .

Abstract:Prof. Rongjue Wei was very interested in ensuring that students at the Institute of Acoustics in Nanjing had an opportunity to do graduate work in the United States. He had many contacts with researchers at institutions around the world that performed acoustics research. Over a period of 25 years, Prof. Wei communicated with one of the authors (L.A.C.) about various research efforts undertaken in his laboratory and at various times, suggesting that students at Nanjing could move directly into these programs. On several occasions, these students were admitted to the author’s institution and worked under him or his colleagues. This relationship with Nanjing was very productive, producing some outstanding graduates, and still continues.

Abstract:The thesis,based on an example of the architectural acoustics design of a sports studium in Zhejiang University,explores the ultimate goal of the acoustics design of a multi-funtional sports studium and the possibility of creating an ideal acoustic effect through the use and proper layout of sound absorbing material to control the reverberation time and diminish unwanted sound.Main methods applied include:layout of the sound absorbing material,test and comparision of sound performance,attention to the sound absorbing of the walls,control of the unwatned sound,and finally the use of simulation of such a design in computer to find out how it really functions under different sound environment:during a meeting or a sports game,thus pinpointing the main principles of architeccural acoustics design of a small to medium sized muti-funtional sprots studium,with the ultimate goal of creating an ideal sound effect.

Abstract:This study aims to reveal the impact of the acoustic environment in enclosed university campuses, through a series of subjective questionnaire surveys in eight universities in China and acoustic measurements in Harbin City. The characteristics of indoor/outdoor sound sources, relationships between acoustic environment satisfaction, sound sources and mind-body growth rate, were examined. It has been found that "taking class in large classrooms", "sleeping" and "thinking" rank among the top three easily disturbed campus activities while "watching TV/computer", "sports" and "private conversations" rank among the top three activities that are less easily disturbed. Universities are seriously affected all day long by the surrounding roads off campus, with SPL higher than 60 dBA at 87% of all measurement points. The overall satisfaction with campus acoustic environment is low, with the students satisfied only representing 28%. Only 1/3 of the students on campus consider themselves having fast mind-body growth, and a certain influence from the acoustic environment has been shown.

Abstract:The sound field of an underground garage space with typical characteristic was measured, and two important acoustic indices including reverberation and sound pressure level distribution were analyzed systemetically. Two analysis methods including the comparison of differences at various frequencies and the examination of the distance and spatial variations were employed considering typical test points and typical attenuation curves. Based on the analysis of sound fields, it is expected that typical characteristics of the acoustic phenomenon in such spaces will be obtained, which sets up solid foundation for the future study.
